SWEET! Thanks for the heads-up. We watched the original ones on NBC and were waiting for the new episodes to appear.

I almost forgot ...

Southland Returns Modestly to 2.5 million and a 1.0 rating with Adults 18-49 - TV Ratings, Nielsen Ratings, Television Show Ratings | TVbytheNumbers.com

Quote:
So much for any “you’ll be sorry, NBC!” angle. The first new episode of Southland on TNT — the season two premiere, returned to 2.5 (2.494) million viewers, and 1.3 million adults 18-49, a 1.0 rating in that demographic.

It’s hardly a surprise, but I wouldn’t hold your breath for a season 3 renewal announcement.

Thanks for that Jon. Did TNT already have the Season 2 episodes from NBC, or did they make their own? If they already had them, they made a mistake in just not showing the episodes right then when the buzz around the show was at its peak. People kinda forgot about it they went back to showing old episodes. I've got it taped, so haven't watched it myself yet.

What kind of numbers did the last repeat episode get on TNT before the new episode I wonder?

The season 2 episodes were in the bag already. TNT just purchased the right to air those episodes.

I don't recall that specific one but the repeats settled into an average roughly half the size of the new episode this week (I remember doing that calculation earlier today)

I haven't seen any of the first season, but caught the first episode of season two. Enjoyed it but wouldn't put it up there with Homicide: Life on the streets, which is kind of what they seem to pattern it after. I will keep watching though, certainly a lot worse on TV.

Ouch, this just keeps getting worse
Southland ; And More Cable Finals - TV Ratings, Nielsen Ratings, Television Show Ratings | TVbytheNumbers.com

Last night TNT aired the third new episode from season two of Southland averaged a .7 with adults 18-49, and 1.86 million viewers.

That’s down from last week’s 2.055 million viewers overall, but flat with adults 18-49.

To put that in a little perspective, that's worse 18-49 than TNA Impact did up against Raw on Monday night.

Yeah, these new shows have been a bit of a disappointment. It’s still better than most other show on TV, but at what I’m sure are high production costs I can see why it didn’t make it.

They should have just called it “Boomtown II – Let’s try this again”.

I watch it, the actors are good but the show itself doesn't offer anything new.

Me too. I like the characters and the storylines on the show. I'm disappointed that the show is getting poor ratings but am happy that at least we got to see the second season. All my favorite shows get canceled, for example, my three most recent canceled favorites were Southland, Life and Pushing Daisies.

Still watching as well, I think the characters are well done, but it seems like the show struggles to find the one storyline that can take center stage.

Southland closed the season flat vs the previous week, with 2.070 million total viewers and a 0.7 adults 18-49 rating.

The finale was up 15,000 total viewers vs the 2nd season premiere but down 30% (from a 1.0) with A18-49.

It's getting a third season.

Quote:
Southland has been renewed by TNT for a third season.

While I don’t even attempt to predict the renewal or cancellation of cable shows, this does come as somewhat of a surprise to me. Robert’s recent post titled “Can Time Warner Pride and Ego Save “Southland” or Will Capitalism Prevail?” gives you some idea what his guess would have been.

You can make up your own mind, the ratings reports for Southland on TNT are on our site, just use the site search for “Southland”.

Here is the TNT press release:

TNT Renews Acclaimed Series SOUTHLAND for Third Season

TNT has booked a third season of its critically acclaimed drama SOUTHLAND, from Warner Bros. Television and Emmy®-winning producer John Wells (ER, The West Wing). The network has ordered 10 episodes for the third season, which is slated to begin airing in January 2011.

“SOUTHLAND is a challenging, visceral show that engages viewers with its immersive style, provocative storylines and complex characters,” said Michael Wright, executive vice president, head of programming, for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies (TCM). “These qualities have made SOUTHLAND a favorite among critics and appointment viewing for an extremely loyal audience.”

Created by Emmy® winner Ann Biderman (NYPD Blue, Public Enemies), SOUTHLAND takes a raw, authentic look at police work in Los Angeles. The series focuses on officers, detectives and members of a gang unit as they endure the triumphs and tragedies that populate their lives both on and off the job. The series is shot on location in the streets and neighborhoods of Los Angeles.

SOUTHLAND’s ensemble cast includes Kevin Alejandro (Drive, Ugly Betty); Arija Bareikis (Crossing Jordan); Clifton Collins Jr. (Capote, Star Trek); Michael Cudlitz (Band of Brothers, A River Runs Through It); Shawn Hatosy (Alpha Dog); Regina King (Ray, Jerry Maguire); Michael McGrady (The Thin Red Line, Day Break); Ben McKenzie (The O.C.); and Tom Everett Scott (Boiler Room, That Thing You Do). SOUTHLAND is executive-produced by Wells, Biderman and Emmy® winner Christopher Chulack (ER, Third Watch), who also serves as a primary director of the series.

TNT picked up SOUTHLAND after the series was dropped by NBC prior to the launch of its second season. TNT presented an encore of the seven-episode first season beginning in January 2010, followed by a premiere run of the six-episode second season beginning in March 2010.

For its second season on TNT, SOUTHLAND has averaged 2.7 million viewers, with 1.4 million adults 18-49 and adults 25-54. The show enjoys great loyalty among viewers, as shown by the use of time-shifted viewing. According to the most recent Live + 7 deliveries, the second season of SOUTHLAND has grown its total audience by 50% compared to Live viewing (26% compared to Live + Same Day). Among adults 18-49, the boost is 68% vs. Live (32% vs. Live + Same Day). Among adults 25-54, the bump is 62% vs. Live (33% vs. Live + Same Day). The show’s median age (47) is the lowest of any TNT original series.

Warner Bros. Television (WBTV) is one of the entertainment industry’s most respected providers of original content, producing award-winning drama and comedy series for both broadcast network television and cable. Continuing programs include TV’s #1 comedy among Adults 18-49 in The Big Bang Theory, TV’s #1 comedy among Households and Total Viewers in Two and a Half Men, the #1 new program of 2008-2009 among Households and Total Viewers in The Mentalist, the Julia Louis-Dreyfus–starring comedy The New Adventures of Old Christine and veteran drama Cold Case for CBS; the #1 new program of 2008-2009 among Adults 18-49 in Fringe for Fox; Chuck for NBC; and Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill, Smallville and Supernatural for The CW. WBTV also produces The Closer for TNT.

While I'm excited the show is being renewed I must say I'm surprised. I thought for sure it was done after this season.

Huh, I thought they had already announced that it was done. Guess not.

I hope with this much of a layoff they will be able to keep the cast together, at least the main roles.

Good episode last night I thought-really like the lead cop with the painkiller addiction storyline-he's close to a complete breakdown I think. Great job by that actor.

But I was more interested in the very first promo for the Steven Spielberg produced Falling Skies. Looks like yet another alien invasion/human resistance type show, and I have my doubts about Noah Wyle (Carter from ER) as the lead, but certainly curious and interested with Spielberg's involvement.

Sadly we have to wait till June for the first episode.

TNT - Falling Skies: Home

Edit: For my fellow fans of the dearly missed Journeyman, you'll be happy to see Moon Bloodgood as the female lead-she was the fellow time traveler to Kevin McKidd's character there.

I thought last night's episode was solid as well. I'm liking the fact that Detective Adams doesn't see eye to eye with her partner's techniques and vice versa. They both seem very strong-willed and could be very fun to watch together.

TNT is on the verge of renewing Southland according to Variety.

The cable drama is set to end its third season Tuesday — the first 13 episodes were split into two seasons — and with stellar critical support and ratings that are nowhere near cable’s best, but solid and consistent enough for the Turner net to tolerate, all indications are the skein will be making a return engagement. TNT is likely to make an announcement in the near future.

The story notes that procedural shows are big profit generators for TNT. Southland is produced by Warner Bros, which shares a corporate parent with TNT.

NBC renewed Southland after a brief first season and then famously canceled the show before airing an episode of the second season.

When one pocket is paying the other pocket, a lot of the traditional rules go out the window.

No doubt. I have yet to fully get into the show because I was always worried I'd get invested and it'd get canceled so it seems I can finally get back into this and not be disappointed if it does get canceled after next year since it'd have a decent enough run.

Although I liked Southland in the past lately I've been watching Lights Out rather than Southland at 10 PM on Tuesdays (and I don't own a DVR so that's out). Southland is still pretty good but I think Lights Out is better.
