This is true. I have the 8 gig and though I can run iOS4, I cannot multitask.

I will have to try the music that MV mentioned though. Since I didn't hear music on start-up screen, never tried again.

To do so just ensure that sound is disabled in FMHi preferences firstly and start the iTunes music player off before the game starts. The music will continue once you start the game.

To control music in the app double click on the home button and you should find the music control pops up over the app allowing you to browse through music etc.

Hope this helps,

Marc

That did indeed work. Never tried to listen to music after hearing it stop at the title screen. Even on my 8 gig one.

A friend of mine had an interesting iTouch question, thought I'd throw it out here to see if the FOFC has better answers than I've found.

He's a very strict parent (exponentially beyond my own standards) and has grave concerns about his 13 y/o daughter having unrestricted texting access via her iTouch.

He doesn't want to completely restrict her ability to text her friends that he knows/approves, he's looking for the ability to monitor & moderate who she texts with.

So far, I haven't found anything that lets him do that effectively with texting the iTouch, although the ability does exist with many phones, iPhones, etc. as well as several browser options that allow parental control of internet access.

Anybody got a possible solution (beyond "just don't let her have one")?

The Touch needs a WiFi connection to connect to the internet. The only ways I can think of to text are:
email
Twitter
Facebook
chat clients

But, if there's no wifi, then there's no connection. You can still use it like an iPod and play most apps (very few require an active connection). On the device itself, under general settings, you can set up restrictions for disabling certain services (like internet, you tube, iTunes--i.e. going to the store to buy stuff--installing apps, facetime, etc. You can also only allow certain content based on rating (not allowing any apps, only allowing those rated 4+, 9+, 12+, 17+, or allow all apps).

But I guess I'm not sure exactly how he envisions her texting...

There's quite a few apps that you can text via the internet connection (can't think of any of their names off hand), but it basically sends an e-mail to the cell phone. Though, I don't think any of them do Jon's looking for AFAIK.

Well, if that's the case, then if the apps are rated in a way conducive to adding the restrictions, that's what I'd do. Or limit connection to the wifi...

I'm a classic guy, although my ipod is a 5th gen model that predates the "classic."

This is the 1st ap that has made me think "I WANT IT!" Apple - iTunes - Remote

I've been sorta lobbying to the wife to get a 4th gen 32GB touch for my birthday but it's kind of a hard sell with us upgrading the TV and all. I'd really like to have one but she's saying it's only another toy for the little kid in me. Yeah, I'm a kid, I know that, but I'd still want one...

To be honest if she's 13 then she can probably run rings around any protection he throws up on the device to try and track her texting - there are LOTS of ways for a teenager to talk to unsavoury characters online, Facebook, MSN, Texting, ChatRoulette .... you name it they'll find it (especially with an iTouch where a LOT of apps can be downloaded for free).

I'd personally recommend talking to her and educating her as to the risks and dangers and then TRUSTING her, don't get excited if she makes mistakes and encourage open talking about things.

My daughter is now 16 and I'm finding her teen years terrifying not because she isn't sensible or level headed (she is, heck compared to me at that age she's a blooming angel ) ... but because she's becoming a young lady and independant, its important they find their feet and independance at some point and it has to start somewhere ....

If on the other hand he doesn't want to just trust her* then I'd recommend he NOT get her an iTouch and instead get her a very limited function Phone, that would reduce her means of communicating to just texting and he could track who she communicates with via. the numbers on the bill and her phones contact list.

*And each parent knows their kids best, it could be this is the very best approach to take with her - not trying to judge at all ...

I think my lobbying might be paying off. We exchanged a couple emails today where she was talking about a coworker who had won a luggage in a provincial lottery and my wife wanted to offer her to buy it. She was giving me the value they were listing them at and I countered that these values are always inflated. For example, they had a 32 Gb Touch listed as one of the prizes and they had it listed as valued at 337$. A 4th gen is selling for 319$ in the canadian Apple store and I even argued that since it was a sort of "Summer lotto" type thing, it was probably even a 3rd gen that they were giving away but that I could not tell only based off the picture.

At that point, I was not really lobbying for one, simply showing an example of something I had been shopping for lately. She replied back saying she didn't really mind the price of the iPod Touch but that it was the monthly fee that would come later that would be rough. Then it clicked in my mind, she was confusing the Touch with an iPhone!

I replied explaining how different they were and how each could access the net and she seems more open to me getting one.

May not seem a big deal to most of you, but as I said, we just changed the TV to a 46" ACL, with a new wall unit to go with it and a home theater seating style of couch. We've done quite a bit of spending lately. On the other hand, I will turn 40 in about a month. I even showed her how she could order straight from the apple store and have something engraved on it, teasing her how she could get creative and have fun. She's 42 now and it's been a long joke that she's way older than me...

If anybody is thinking about getting an iPod Touch, until 12/4 Target is giving away a $30 gift card with the purchase of a 32gb. If you find the holiday mailing that went out with coupons last week, there was a 10% off coupon and another for a $15 gift card with purchase of over $150. Throw in the 5% discount by having the Target Red Card and the price is about what you pay for the 8gb.
