Did you know that in the MLB, over 140 seasons there have been 46 250-game winners and only 24 300-game winners? In the 159 seasons of FOOL baseball, there have been 16 300-game winners and 49 250-game winners? |

August's Top Starter Named in RL
Friday, September 1st, 2119: In August Ann Arbor starter, Alexis Thibeault really put the strong arm on the other Republic League teams and hauled in the Pitcher of the Month trophy. He did it with an impressive 4 wins and 1 loss. In 6 starts and 43.1 innings of work, Thibeault limited opposing batters to 29 base hits and a .187 batting average. He fanned 40, issued 10 walks and had a 2.70 ERA. Thus far this season, Thibeault has worked 161.1 innings with 146 strikeouts en route to a 11-12 record and a 4.63 ERA. Hooper Picks up CL Monthly Pitching Honor Friday, September 1st, 2119: It doesn't happen often, but it did in August: A reliever, Alfred Hooper, has been named the top pitcher in the Continental League. The Apex bullpen ace starred with no saves in no relief appearances, logging 45.1 innings, 28 strikeouts, 4 walks and a 1.99 ERA. Hooper finished the month with 5 wins and no losses -- and was the league's number one hurler. So far this year Hooper has delivered no saves. In no relief appearances he has 119 strikeouts in 190.1 innings with a 2.22 ERA and a 16-6 won-lost mark. |

I think the thing to keep in mind is in MLB, you had pitchers like Don Sutton or Gaylord Perry or Tom Seaver pitch well past their prime in order to achieve that 300 win milestone. (I would include Phil Niekro also who pitched until age 48, but well he actually pitched quite well in his 40s). There is only 1 pitcher with career wins of 290 - 300. Almost every pitcher that got close hung on a little longer to get that milestone. In FOOl, you have three pitchers with wins in 290-300, and many others (such as Kieran Browne, Javier Zuniga, Bartolo Rodriguez ) that were within striking distance of 300 that retired instead. Sure Browne, Rodriguez and Zuniga were past their prime, but they could have held on another 2-3 seasons of 7 win seasons to get 300 if they had wanted. So that is kind of one of the reasons the numbers are likely a little off there. |

Ishii Grades Out as August's Top Rookie
Friday, September 1st, 2119: Manabu Ishii put up eye-catching numbers in August to earn himself the Republic League Rookie of the Month Award. The first baseman for the Hartford Harpooners batted .298 with 7 home runs, 26 RBIs and 18 runs scored as he proved he does deserve to play in the Republic League. Ishii on the season is batting .307 with 32 home runs. His totals include 107 RBIs and 72 runs scored. He has played in 124 games. CL Names Stein Best Rookie Friday, September 1st, 2119: In August, budding star John Stein had quite a month as he smashed up the Continental League and stashed away the Rookie of the Month award in his trophy case. During the month he hit .238 with 5 doubles, 1 triple and 3 home runs. Stein also scored 11 times and drove in 10 runs. To date this season Stein is hitting .246 with 8 home runs. |

Yea they were close enough to get there. I think OOTP9 and 10 didn't do players justice in the sense that they would retire if they didn't get the money they wanted. 11 does the hang on contracts a lot better.

García Smashes 300th Homer
Thursday, September 21st, 2119: Rebels third baseman António García reached a career milestone yesterday, blasting home run number 300. He took the achievement in stride. In his 1583-game career García is hitting .245 with 1497 hits, 321 doubles, 15 triples and 300 home runs. He has scored 802 runs and driven in 996. |

Relief Star Wins RL Top Pitcher Honors
Sunday, October 1st, 2119: Bill Starr had an excellent September and has been rewarded with the Republic League Pitcher of the Month Award. The Los Angeles relief ace was one tough customer on the mound, constantly coming in and getting his club out of trouble or protecting a one-run or two-run lead. During the month, the Bruins star had 2 saves in 3 save opportunities, a 1.90 ERA and 2 wins and no losses. In 23.2 innings Starr struck out 18 and gave up 17 hits and 3 walks. This year his season stats show Starr has 4 saves in 75 relief appearances with a 6-3 record and 4.66 ERA. Guiney Wins Best CL Pitcher Sunday, October 1st, 2119: In September Halifax starter Roland Guiney mystified Continental League hitters and carried off the Pitcher of the Month honors by chalking up a 5-0 record in 6 starts. The 32-year-old Guiney added 16 strikeouts in 41 innings and 11 walks to his season record and compiled a 1.76 ERA. Opposing batters hit .224 against him. This year Guiney has 14 wins and 10 losses and a 3.06 ERA. |

Ishii Brings Home RL Batter of Month Honor
Sunday, October 1st, 2119: Today Hartford's Manabu Ishii was named Republic League Batter of the Month for September. He slammed opposing pitching hard all month long, bashing out 39 hits in 106 at-bats. With a .368 batting average, 7 home runs, 24 RBIs and 16 runs scored, he was a solid choice. Ishii is batting .317 with 39 home runs and 131 RBIs this season. CL Announces Outstanding Batter Award Sunday, October 1st, 2119: For the month of September, Mark Callaghan of the Baltimore Gothams has really worn out the sweet spot on his bat. He has assaulted, used and abused Continental League pitchers to the tune of a .351 batting average and was honored as the hottest hitter of the month today. Callaghan went 34 for 97 last month with 8 walks. The first baseman tallied 6 home runs, 20 RBIs, 13 runs scored and compiled a .400 on-base percentage. So far this year, Callaghan is batting .365 with 30 home runs and 113 RBIs. |

Ishii Honored by Republic League
Sunday, October 1st, 2119: None of the pitchers could figure him out last month. Manabu Ishii was pure poison to them, lashing out hits with in such abundance he was voted the latest Republic League Rookie of the Month. In September he hit the ball at a .368 clip, popping off 39 hits and 7 home runs with 24 RBIs and scoring 16 runs. Hartford opponents have to be thinking about pitching around this guy until he cools off a bit. In 150 games this season Ishii has batted at a .317 pace with 193 hits and 39 home runs. Rookie Reels In Continental League Award Sunday, October 1st, 2119: The batter wants to "hit 'em where they ain't." And that is just what António Pinto did all month long to net the Continental League Rookie of the Month Award. In September he slapped 29 hits in 84 at-bats for a .345 batting average. Pinto also racked up 2 home runs, 7 RBIs, and 17 runs scored. Currently Pinto is batting .288 with 14 home runs and 61 RBIs. |

So one of the big questions after the playoffs will be if Ishii will win both the Tanaka award and Benny Myers award in the same season. The last player to do so in the Republic League was Hartford's own Luis Flores 15 seasons ago.

Heh. I don't know what it is about Sept-Oct that causes me to slide and tank so much. I need to figure out how to correct that...whatever "that" is.
Great job to Apex and Tokyo who almost beat me. Good luck to the other playoffs teams! Wow Chico/Hartford is definitely a new combination. Not seen that before. Last edited by CrimsonFox : 05-24-2011 at 08:19 PM. |

I would like to add that I am EXTREMELY proud of my bullpen! The last game that I won, my starter went five innings giving up 4 runs and 5 hits. Then I went through SIX relievers in the next four innings and not a one of them gave up a hit or a run!

Heh. I like Baltimore's chances to kill me in the first round. Just like my last playoff appearance, my best two pitchers pitched the last two games and left me them with 7% and 0% respectively for the playoffs. And that with a 5 man rotation + spot at 20.
This seems like an odd question but is there any chance that, since you run the last 10 games a game at a time anyway, that we have the option of resting our best pitchers the last two games if we are a contender? Granted I"m hoping swapping to version 12 will really help this issue. |

I don't always run the last 10 days a game at a time. I only do that if there is a possible chance of a tie at the end of the season (because I then have to manually edit the schedule to break the tie before the playoffs occur). Normally I just sim the final week all the way through at once if there is no chance of ties. |

One little "trick" I always used when I used to run a team before being a commissioner like 100 seasons ago was a little pitching staff manipulation. I -always- used strict rotation and -never- used spot starters. The main reason was so I could accurately predict when and how often a pitcher would pitch. I know with a 4 man rotation on a 162 game schedule, you'll finish your rotation at game 160 and then have your #1 and #2 pitchers pitch the last two games. With a 5 man rotation on a 162 game schedule, you'll also finish your rotation at game 160 and have your #1 and your #2 pitchers pitch the last two games. So knowing that, you can then choose to go with a 3 man rotation or a 6 man rotation for the season and it will end exactly at 162 games, then allowing your #1 starter to be ready for playoffs. However I think there are significant drawbacks to using 3 or 6 man rotations in the regular season, so I never did so. Instead, what I always did was simply put my #1 starter 3rd in the rotation, my #2 starter 4th in the rotation and #3 starter as 1st in the rotation and #4 starter as 2nd in the rotation. The risk you have here is that it ends up giving 1 extra game for your #3 or 4 starters, but I always felt if you didn't have a strong or at least competent #3 starter, you were in trouble for the playoffs anyways. Plus I found that it ended up giving me some really nice pitching matchups during the regular season at times. (Such as my #4 starter that went 20-1 one season Player Report for #11 Joel Garner ) Anyways, that is how I tackled this problem when I managed. I think I only one time lost the regular season by less than 2 games where this could have had any impact. Just a thought or suggestion at other ways to try to resolve this for you. |

I used to do something like this as well, way back in the day, but unlike Alan, I kept finding that I would miss the playoffs by game or two and would bemoan that I had gone with that rotation order. IIRC, my main experiments (and failures) with that was during my first years running the Firecrackers, back in the late 1970s and 80s. Very frustrating. All that said, like Alan is saying, it probably works well, and I just had a bad experience in a small sample size.
