I'm to scared to upgrade because everything (games) works perfect with Win 7 64 Pro. I guess I'll just wait.

Out the gate it's hard to say, but once things settle down windows 10 should blow 7 away for gaming. Microsoft admitted a couple months ago that DX11 is a major bottleneck for gaming.

Here's an article that discusses it:

Thanks.

Yes.. it just allows some preliminary W10 files to download to your pc and then you can install it when you want to. It even tells you what might not work. Said my NVIDIA GeFore 650ti might not work, but they already have a W10 beta driver out.

Congratulations on reserving Windows 10
Your free upgrade will be available from July 29th, and now that you’ve reserved it, you won’t miss a minute of Windows 10 helping you do great things.

Icon popped up on my desktop. Desktop is where I do all my PC gaming so I'm gonna keep my powder dry on that. Laptop seemed like a fine option for experimentation, but it didn't get the icon. Contacted Microsoft support and they did a few things to get the icon to pop up on my laptop, so the laptop now has W10 reserved.

What the tech ALSO did was go 'oh look Java wants to update let's go ahead and update that.'

The MS tech updated Java. I don't even know what to make of that.

My icon didn't show up automatically... I had to search google for some fixes and I finally got it to show up.

For those of you who don't have the Win 10 icon and want it so you can reserve your copy of Win 10.. the link below downloads a bat file to your pc (you will have to unzip it). Right click on it and run as an administrator and a window will open up with options (fixes). Start with #1 and work your way down until the icon shows up. For my pc and my mom's laptop, #3 did the trick, but I would start with the top one first.

I believe you can just uninstall the KB3035583 Windows Update through Programs and Features if you don't want to use a batch file. You also have to hide the update to prevent it from coming back.

Never realized that was a free upgrade (never clicked on it and assumed they were trying to get someone to pay for the upgrade). May sign up for it.

My post was about adding it. Many people are not getting the icon, so that batch file helps to get it to show up.

Do you have to sign up for the upgrade right now or will you have time to do it after it's released? I don't like this "automatically downloads when released" bit.

Also where is it on Windows 8? Found it on 7.

You get up to 1 year after release to claim a copy.

I've heard great things too. I'll download it right away. Then again I have a new laptop and if it goes bonkers I'll just re-install Windows 8.1 (which blows).

Will Microsoft ship you a DVD if you upgrade? I'm just wondering installs on a new hard drive.

It doesn't look like they will ship a DVD, but it does appear they will provide an ISO for download, or a way to create install media after the upgrade.

I'm going to mess with it tonight hopefully. Only thing it reported was NVIDIA drivers - but I'm pretty sure I saw W10 drivers for my video card out there.

Upgrade done. You are correct about the nVidia driver, MizzouRah. I had to install the new driver after the Windows upgrade was done, and there is a new Windows 10 specific one that nVidia released. Other than the Start Menu and Taskbar looking a bit different, nothing major jumps out at first glance.

quad dola,

It looks like the install cleans up a bunch of crap. I have an extra 40gb free on my C drive after the upgrade.

Did you have to go to NVIDIA to d/l it or did it figure that out on its own?

I have the GeForce Experience app, and it prompted me to install when it booted back into the desktop after the upgrade. But I've also seen where the driver is showing up for people in Windows Update as part of the upgrade.

How does this work if your recovery partition is Windows 8? For instance lets say 2 years from now my hard drive dies I need to re-install Windows through the recovery tools (which are on a separate drive or thumb drive). Will it just re-install Windows 8 and upgrade through updates?

I'd just create the Win 10 media as part of the upgrade and not even bother with the Windows 8 recovery partition.

Haven't received notification yet. Even when I took the link to check status of upgrade it said I would be notified when it is released.

Is there something else that I have to do?

I didn't receive an actual notification either. However on my computer I right clicked on the windows icon on the task bar and had three options

check status
go to windows update
learn about win 10

If I click on "go to windows update" I get the option to start the upgrade in the regular windows update panel. Just getting ready to start it now so can't tell you more than that.

Took about 45-50 minutes to update on my rig. dell xps i7. Appears to have auto updated my nvidia driver as I never got any messages during or after installation.

Smooth transition. Things seem nice and fast with no issues running anything yet.
