Brutal. Time to write Chapman a huge check this offseason.

Fitting that a bullpen meltdown ends the season.
What a fun series that was, even if the Giants lost. Great baseball pretty much the whole way through. I'll have to go back and check, but I think other than the game two win for the Cubs, every single game between these two teams this year was decided by one run. |

Not sure I've ever seen a half inning that bad, all things considered.

Ump has to call a balk there.

I have no idea what a balk actually is. Anyone want to point me to the rule? Reynolds says it's a balk but I can't see it

5 of the 7 regular season games were decided by one run, and 3 of the 4 post-season games were one-time affairs. 8 of 11 - pretty great baseball between these two teams all year long. |

Short answer: the way a balk is defined, any really good pickoff move probably qualifies as a balk on some rule or another, since they're all designed to deceive the runner (which deception is part of the definition of a balk). |

That said, Harold is right - if the foot crosses the rubber, you HAVE to go to home plate.

Nope. Quote:
That's from the comment to Rule 6.02(a)(1). You'll find the same thing in the glossary entry I cited above. There is nowhere in the rule a requirement that the foot not cross the knee. It IS explicitly ruled that the foot may not cross the rubber. |

Great game and series. My biggest question was why was Sherzer taken out after 99 pitches? He gives up a lot of home runs but knows how to win and has been one of the best pitchers in baseball for awhile. I would have stuck with him much further I guess. At least until more signs of trouble than a solo home run in which Pederson just had a great swing against a tough pitch.

Not feeling great with Maeda going up in Game 1 against the Cubs. An odd stat is that Maeda, Kershaw, and Hill didnt face the Cubs this year

Easy, Dusty Baker is historically bad at managing a pitching staff. He managed this like a game on September 20 with a 40 man roster and playoff position already locked up. |

What? A Dusty Baker team lost in the first round after having a series lead? No way!

And why was the 3B coach essentially in left field instead of 2/3rds down the base line to give a late stop?

We'll see how the Jays do. I hope they learned from last year and at least they're getting runners on base, but I hope they can convert before it's too late. I think the psych advantage of a 1-0 lead would be huge for them. Hoping the moment is too big for this Cleveland team.

He was at teh base when he was waving him around; not sure why he went into left after Werth passed the base. I have no clue why he was waving him home, you could already see there was no chance by the time he reaching third. |

Not quite as bad as Jason Werth getting thrown out but Gonzalez was sent on a play he shouldn't have. But with Maeda pitching, they need to take as many chances as possible

That was clearly a mistake there but man, Javy may be my favorite player in all of baseball.

Man, what a game to lose. Roberts intentionally walked a .188 hitter to load the bases just to get rid of Chapman? He has pressed many of the right buttons this season, but this was a terrible decision. No way around how bad the decision was. Coghlan is a bad hitter. Period. With all the momentum in the Dodgers favor, I felt they would win this game once it was tied at 3. This loss is going to sting.

And if you were going to intentionally walk him why not bring in a lefty to face Montero or Kenley Jansen? "But it was a tie game on the road." That's Buck Showalter level thinking.
Then there was the pitch selection to Montero. Blanton hangs a slider on the 0-1 count and Montero somehow misses it. So what do they call on 0-2? The exact same pitch. Idiots. |

Uh, Joe? Baez didn't "let" it fall, it just fell in front. He thought he had AGon doubled up at second
I guess it wasnt high enough for the infield fly rule? Last edited by MrBug708 : 10-16-2016 at 09:48 PM. |
