Bo Burnham's new standup "what." is on Netflix. Pretty good. He's 22, so he still does things that are funny to perhaps only a teenager. But in the mix there is a lot of talent spread around here. Using different instruments too, he's not just standing there with a mic. I think he's got a bright future as a comedian/entertainer.

Stumbled across a British comedy called The Inbetweeners. Pretty juvenile humour. Not sure what it says about me that I laughed my ass off through a lot of it.

What's Eating Gilbert Grape was already on WI, so they must have taken it off and be bringing it back.

Is anyone else having problems streaming Netflix on ps3? I have a 50 meg connection use to be able to stream in 1080p super hd and 3d no problem. The last month or so sometimes I struggle to get even 480p. hulu Plus and Amazon prime both still stream HD fine and my connection speed seems consistent when I test. Just wondering if anyone else has had any problems or knows any ideas!

I use it 5-6 nights a week. Haven't had any issues getting the HD feeds to work. I know that's likely not the response you wanted to hear, but it seems to be working fine and my internet isn't great by any means.

The Inbetweeners is one of my favorite comedies of all time - no doubt it's very juvenile humor, but it's also a dead on approximation of a British secondary/high school. I think they were going to or did make a US version of it?

I hate the new Netflix interface on Roku. How, short of starting a show and rewinding, do I tell it to start a show from the beginning, not where I last left it?

I just watched Assault on Wall Street.
Good movie. Pretty emotional.
Its about the financial crisis and how it affects a man and his wife.

I highly recommend this one.

Thanks DT. The movie isn't available on Canadian Netflix but I was able to find it *ahem* somewhere else. I was a tad disappointed in the movie. Except for the part on the bus with the Burnley supporters.

Yeah - it wasn't that great. Watched it last night after I saw it on there.

Thanks for the "InBetweeners" as I cruised through those. Loved them. I've watched half of "Peep Show" and just find the characters too pathetic. Started "The IT Crowd" and have finished first six episodes. I really like the two geeks but the rest of the show is annoying.

It's weird to me how American shows seem to have their characters "grow" or have flashes where they seem like they might overcome something whereas British shows just keep the sitcom characters the same -- even if they're just pathetic.

I think if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I totally see where you're coming from with Peep Show, but I have always enjoyed shows like that where the main characters are just a couple dumbasses that think they're not dumbasses.

I think the IT crowd gets better as you go. I remember season one not being my favorite.

I watched it based on reviews here and it was entertaining. It was half compelling drama, half vigilante's wet dream. Plus you get the rare Edward Furlong sighting.

Its basically the modern example of a show the network didn't know what to do with so they pretty much destroyed its chances. FOX didn't see it as a good bet so they didn't air the 2 hour pilot first, they used the train job as a pilot, and then kept taking it off the air for sports which lead to even lower ratings. All 14 didn't even air, just 11 did.

I will "third" the recommendation for Deceptive Practice.

I've also got hooked on An Idiot Abroad.
While my love for Ricky Gervais has lost a little luster in the process, I think Karl Pilkington is a freakin' gem.

Well... also niche show gets niche show ratings. Most people just aren't interested in sci-fi to begin with. We are outliers. Add on to the sci-fi that it has western elements and you move even further in the niche.

I mean, BSG didn't get good ratings and actually lost money, but it was Sci-Fi Channel (SyFy now), so it could survive.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy has really not done very well until very, very recently. Recall that people were concerned when Fellowship of the Ring came out, wondering if it would actually make money. The American people are more ready for fantasy or sci-fi being mainstream than they were even 10 years ago.

To back this up, the movie Serenity was cult fan's hope that it would be a mega-ton of money and it would force a resurrection of the show. The movie was a flop - didn't even make $40mil.

I think the issue with LotR was more in the fact that it was going to be a trilogy done with roughly 3 hour movies versus it being fantasy/sci-fi.

I seem to remember the studio being concerned about a whether a fantasy film would make money. It has generally been considered a genre that was box office poison.

I think both of those issues were related. Studios were reluctant to commit to three films because of the uncertainty of fantasy box office appeal.

As for Firefly, it's true that it might not have worked no matter what, but FOX did it no favors by skipping the pilot and showing the episodes out of order.

Ok so I finally got around to watching Ricky Gervais's show Derek. I had heard very mixed things about it. I know that it was controversial for the type of character that he plays. I have to admit the first episode took some adjustment and I wasn't sure I liked it, but if you look at the stories that are being told beyond the humor it is really quite a powerful show. There were a few very emotional scenes and it had me questioning my own life and the way I look at nursing homes and our lives as we age.
