Do we know if Raymond was okay? That looked pretty painful - going ass-first completely unprotected into the boards like that.

Ugh...yikes
Quote:
Raymond had Boychuk's stick caught between his legs when he was awkwardly run backwards into the boards. He remained face down on the ice for several minutes before being helped off the surface and was then transported to hospital for further evaluation. The play went unpenalized and the furious Canucks called for a league review because it has been speculated that Raymond could be sidelined four to six months with a fractured vertebra and miss the start of next season. The review is not expected to occur.

I don't know my rulebook, but was that boarding? Was there a penalty to be called there?

On just watching it, as a Bruins fan obviously, it just seemed like an unfortunate accidental "worst case scenario" where you've got two guys battling for position, one gets wrapped around the other's stick and then checked into the boards, only because he's wrapped around the stick funny and off-balance he can't take the hit the way he normally would.

But if it ought to have been penalized, by all means, educate me and I'll jump right on board with that.

I don't think it was boarding. It was just a very unfortunate and akward type of hit. No penalty was called. Boarding is almost always (only?) called when a player gets hit from behind and into the boards. Here, Raymond has his back to the board and was bent over facing Boychuck who then checked him into the boards. It was because of the way he was bent over that the injury occurred.

It sucks about the injury. It really does. Back stuff is always scary, but I don't see how it was a penalty or what the league would review.

That's what I thought re: boarding and the nature of the hit and all. Just very very unfortunate and awkward, but not sure how you'd call a penalty or review it.

Don't like to see anyone injured. Particularly back stuff.

I grew up in NJ, where you get your driver's license at 17. Undoubtedly, there's a kid walking out of an NJ DMV today proudly clutching his new badge of freedom.

He was born on the day the Rangers won their last Stanley Cup.

That GIF is a good argument for the idea that penalties should carry over from game to game in a playoff series.

Sedin takes Marchand's nonsense because he doesn't want to spoil the PP he has coming. Remember how in school and other places, even acting in your own defense gets you punished to the same extent as the aggressor? That's the assumption he's working under. So failing to react to Marchand shouldn't impugn Sedin.

A couple counter-points:
1) In those scrums you can generally do anything short of dropping the gloves and get away with it. Certainly blocking a punch or tying up the other guy will not get you a penalty.
2) This was essentially garbage time. If there was ever a time to defend yourself and prove you aren't a bitch, this was it.

Sure, you want to stand up for your star guys and shelter them, but you can't do everything for them. If Sedin isn't willing to even remotely stand up for himself, why should his linemates do it for him?

Between stuff like that and all the faking of injuries and other douchiness, I have just one thing to say before game 7:

Go Boston.

I would have to agree, but as a Sharks fan I had already built up a pretty good lack of respect for the Cannucks from the last series.

I will say it is odd, the Rome hit is the play that they will play over and over for years as being the defining moment of the series and I found that to be one of the least offensive things Vancouver did.

Hey, it was quite the accomplishment to pull that off in NHLPA '93 for the Genesis - it would say something like "the feistiest fish win the cup!" when you won the cup with them. Not the most exciting easter egg/win screen at the time, though it seemed that way somehow.

I've had half a dozen calls from buddies to play hockey tonight because guys are bailing to watch the game...and the Oilers aren't even involved. Heck, in my neck of the woods, the Canucks are a very close second to most hated team right behind the Flames...so, I'd say we like our Stanley Cup hockey up here.

For the record, I said no to all the offers to play hockey tonight...AND, I was working until 3am this morning and I fully intend to watch the game and enjoy several brewskies.

If VAN continues getting these chances without scoring and then Luongo gives up a softie, it's over.

You ever get the feeling the NHL issued a directive to the refs to let em go at it tonight.. reminds me of the line before the climactic game in Rollerball (the original):

"Tonight's Championship final will be played with no substitutions, no penalties.. and no time limits!"

Man, the ESPN.Com chat is just doing everything short of coronation on Tyler Seguin.. they're saying he's going to be a Top 10 player within four years. I don't know about that, at least he is playing better..
