wow, SHARP unemployment drop to 8.6%... If that number continues to drop (ie, is not just a seasonal blip), the GOP job is getting harder and harder.

Wow. That is a big drop. Of course, Christmas hiring and all, but if it lasts...

More influential than the seasonal hiring (which seems to account for a good bit of it) is the little mentioned detail that 315,000 people were no longer counted in the unemployment stats because they stopped looking for work. That's 3/4ths of the net "improvement".

Yeah, anyone who starts talking about any drops should look there first before assuming it actually dropped. Between the seasonal hires (which will go away in mid-January) and the people who gave up looking for a job, I'd be very surprised if there was a net gain of any substance.

I get 1-2 resumes a day in my e-mail from people who have stopped looking for a regular job and are looking for part-time work. Unfortunately, my part-time hires are in the summer not the winter, so I've got the "unfortunately, we don't have any openings right now" response on auto-copy on my computer.

Why don't all these lazy people just go get jobs?

We don't have a job shortage, we have a population surplus.

Of course, it's the largest October-November drop in unemployment since 1961, but sure let's just chalk it up to seasonal hiring. In fact, unemployment in this period increases as often as it decreases. It increased last year and four separate times during Bush's presidency. Also, the 8.6% is only .1% higher than Reagan's at the same point in his presidency (when unemployment dropped .3 over the October-November period).

It's Bush's fault. And Reagan's.

Sounds like Cain is out.
Quote:
NBC News reports Cain is making a "major announcement" about his campaign on Saturday in Georgia, just a day after he headed home to Atlanta to meet with his wife in person following allegations that he had a 13-year affair with a woman.

another interesting thing is how they keep revising the jobs report from previous months upwards, significantly in fact (think they revised the last two months up 72,000 jobs). Of course, this has all the conspiracy theorists and haters (who make up 99% of all message board posters on yahoo and elsewhere these days) claiming that the numbers are imaginary, that Obama is trying to artificially make the number go down, yadda yadda yadda. Although I do agree at least with one part.. if you're missing the number by THAT much, month after month.. shouldn't you come up with a better way to come up with the number?

I bet those 315,000 people who stopped looking for work are all liberals who stopped just so that the unemployment number would look better for Obama!!! In fact, I bet just as many unemployed liberal hippies "stop looking" for work every month until the election so that the unemployment number looks better than it really is so that he can get reelected!!!!!

During 2009-2010 it seemed like every announcement included downward revisions of the previous month. I expect it's just damn difficult to get the data quickly enough and the early projections need to be updated when more data comes in. If they waited six months before announcing an unemployment number I bet the revisions wouldn't be necessary.

Cain to announce decision in Atlanta Saturday *| ajc.com

I have to admit, I'm surprised by how little has been made of the irony of Cain being replaced as the front-runner by the one guy who has an even worse (extra) marital history.

Cain had already lost me way before any of the allegations so it's not exactly a big deal for me either way, but I'm still surprised that hasn't been THE drumbeat of the aftermath.

The big difference is that Newt's scandals were already known. It's much harder for a brand new candidate that the public just learned about to get past such accusations. Clinton is the only example I can think of that was able to do it and he was a much savvier politician than Cain.

Also, the right wing is running out of non-Romney candidates to support. They have to go somewhere and they've made it clear by now they are NOT going to Romney. I'm still surprised Palin decided not to run. This is basically the perfect environment for her.

I wonder why Santorum never got a shot as the notRomney? He seems like he'd be palatable to the same folks that loved Bachman, Perry, Cain and Gingrich.

If I did Intrade, I'd sure be buying those Cain to dropout before Dec. 31 shares that are priced at $6.90 right now.

That's a good question. I don't know really know, but he's probably next in line if Gingrich has some major scandal like being Jerry Sandusky's best buddy or something.

Santorum is not well known enough, and what he IS known for (the Savage reprehensible smear to googlebomb Santorum as something disgusting), tars him.

I had to do a little research into what "suspend" means, since obviously nobody who ever "suspended" their campaign ever started it again. It just means they can still raise and spend money for their "campaign". Ah, that makes sense then. Cain's "campaign" no doubt will involve further branding for the upcoming book, FoxNews show. That ain't cheap.

Oh good, you're back . Given your wit and wisdom on gay people, muslims, suggesting the guy who murdered George Tiller and Tiller were comparable (abortion providers and people who kill them) and suggesting people move to North Korea, its great to get your political wisdom. I'm sure the League of the South appreciates your feedback.

I found Palin's comments on Hannity (I believe) the other night lambasting some of the candidates for campaigning to do little more than selling books a little funny.

This Ron Paul ad is awesome. The only thing that would make it better is getting Denis Leary to do the voiceover.

LOL. He's slightly more conservative than, I dunno, JPhillips (had to pick on somebody) but anything beyond that gets pretty comical.

Carbon caps, backed the stimulus bill, member of the Obama administration, weak on immigration, and until a few hours ago (apparently) backed the global warming loonies.

Not worth a bucket of warm spit, and as bad as the field may be, it's a sad state of affairs that he's gotten even as much support as he has.

Like I said, shitty field at the front at this point (and the back ain't exactly great shakes either).

Wouldn't give you a plug nickel for either of the top two.

Obama with a majority lead over Gingrich 50-42 in recent polling. And this is BEFORE Obama spends a single dime of his warchest and SO many juicy scandals. If the Republicans continue down this path, it could be a dukakis level debacle.

I still appreciate the nerve of Santorum to run for president after losing by 19+ points in his senate reelection.

I feel like the establishment will eventually hold their nose and just get behind Romney at some point. Gingrich will get slaughtered in a general election and is the complete opposite of the type of candidate they should be running.

This is what my thoughts are as well. If Gingrich gets the nomination I can't see him mounting much of anything in the general election.

The problem is that the establishment doesn't control everything anymore. A lot of long-time GOP Congressmen found that out in the 2010 primaries. They may have created the Tea Party, but they can't control them anymore.

The establishment can't stop Romney from winning big in New Hampshire. If that happens, and Iowa is remotely close (Gingrich isn't REALLY going to dominate Iowa, is he?), then Romney is going to look like the clear frontrunner by early January, and he's not going to do anything to screw that up.

I think it's about SC and FL. NH doesn't help Romney because he's expected to win. If he only wins one of the IA, NH, SC, and FL he's in a lot of trouble.

Three polls out today have Gingrich up +15, +15, and +11 on Romney in Iowa. Gingrich also has a +16 lead in SC and a +15 lead nationwide.

Are we sure they aren't polling Obama supporters?

I also like how one of the knocks on Huntsman is that he believes in science. Only in America.

Found this to be somewhat cowardly. I don't agree with any anti-gay stances by candidates personally, but if you're going to confront a candidate, have the 'balls' to do it yourself rather than grab a camcorder and force your kid to make the statement. I thought Bachmann handled this pretty well given the scenario. Politely say good bye and move on.
