Will someone please end the Brandon Inge era in Detroit? Hitting .071, an error in the 8 run first followed by an attempt to turn a double play that rolled under his glove instead leading to zero outs.

I really want a "baseball special events" phone app that only activates after the 7th inning in a pitching gem. Or if a guy has 3 homers. Or if something else sweet is happening.

Wow, congrats to Humber! He had to fight to keep the perfect game in the 9th.

No way he went. That was a walk. He exact opposite of Joyce. Umpire decided it was going to happen. Terrific game from the kid, but in my mind Gallaraga will always have a perfect game and he will not.

Just a terrible call to end the game. The check-swing is one of the most difficult to judge, but this one wasn't even close.

I thought of that as well. Umps take one and give one. Either way, cant take anything from Humber, he was lights out.

nothing away from him. Terrific game, terrific story. Problem is that wasn't even close. It was a clear cut check swing walk.

Full count check swing? In that situation it will be a strike. You really think that ump wants to be linked to breaking up a perfect game?
Swing or dont. You will lose that call as a batter 100% of the time in that situation.
I have no problem with it.

Congrats to Humber! PERFECTION!

I do. An umpire is human, but the sooner we get the "human element" out as an excuse for shitty decision making, the better we are. Still, Humber pitched a hell of a game.

Just watched the replay on the last pitch by Humber. Shitty call by the ump - he clearly couldn't handle the pressure and as soon as he saw Ryan flinch he was determined to call a strike, regardless of the fact that Ryan didn't come close to swinging far enough to be a strike.

Oh well, congrats to Humber on a great game (if not quite an earned perfecto), and the M's offense continues to prove they are who we thought they were. Not sure why Wedge insists on playing Olivo every day as he keeps proving he's one of the worst players in the game, but I suppose just about ever manager has some major blind spot.

If the Mariners and Pirates lineups all lined up to play Ike Turner in the sequel to "what's love got to do with it," Tina would never get a bruise.

Matt Kemp is easily the hottest player in baseball. He just can't miss right now. Dodgers have really looked good so far this year. The team looks really relieved that Frank McFuck is gone, and the team finally looks like a Mattingly team instead of a Torre team.

The occasionally goofy move aside, I think it's Theo's mess in Boston, and then the ownership's, not Valentine's. They're 11-29 since September 1st of last year. Ownership saw Francona as the villain, they ran him out of town and planted the pain pill popper stories with the Globe. Theo left (kind of like a guy leaving a party after he puked all over the sofa), and ownership apparently gave the new guy specific instructions not to make any moves, perhaps because the emphasis is on Liverpool now.

And still, this team played like one of the worst teams ever last April and September, and then the best in baseball from May-August. Maybe that's all just an success/failure distribution anomaly, and over that season +1 month they're really just an 86-win team or whatever that averages out to, but they do seem psychologically damaged.

After a few posts like these I thought you were just being dramatic like a few of us Braves fans were after our slow start. Then I looked at some stats and saw that Pittsburgh's team split was .201/.249/.285, goddamn.

Oh I agree. Actually I think they wanted to hire Valentine because they figure as media-personality he'll detract attention and criticism from the shit product they've put on the field.

So we're clearly seeing a new pitching era so my question is...why?

1. Bigger new ballparks?

2. Pitchers cheating somehow or an adjustment in the rules? I see pitchers with a lot of stuff on their hats lately and nobody seems to call them on anything.

3. Too much swinging for the fences meaning less baserunners, hence less runs?

4. Removal of PEDs?

5. Different baseballs to make it look like PEDs have been removed?

6. Just a flat out return to normal baseball?

I have no problem with Runge's call and I had a ton of problems with Joyce's call. Call me an old fashion curmudgeon, but in a situation like that you don't let a judgement call break up a perfect game. If he didn't want it to be a strike, he shouldn't have started to swing a pitch three feet outside in the dirt.

There is further no reason to gripe since he decided to argue the call rather than run the play out. Given how far that ball got away, There's a better than even chance he gets to first if he runs rather than stand there whining about the call.

Royals fans will be ready to burn down the ballpark combining Humber's perfect game with the current losing streak, since we waived Humber in December 2010. Granted, no one saw this coming much less Humber turning into a serviceable back of the rotation guy. But it still stings.

7. I think film study and tendencies has gotta be disproportionately helping pitching and defense. Even if they could take away 1 hit per 30 AB that's a huge win for pitching.
