Suarez is a pure goal scorer. Always in the right position and just plain fun to watch. (When he's not biting people that is )

No swan dive, but that was beautiful, especially Cavani's pass.

It's actually been a while since Suarez bit someone. Surely he's due?

I'm sure they have to feed his ego but Sterling was so much better in the middle vs. Italy

They absolutely would. They're a very well disciplined team positionally and would do well to deny Brazil space, and could probably also hold possession better than a lot of other matchups the Brazillians might get (Germany for example).

Certainly can't fault Rooney's instincts today - constantly in position to score. A well-deserved finish.

Of these two, Uruguay needs the victory even more desperately. England could realistically advance with a draw here and a win over Costa Rica. Uruguay would need a win over Italy with a goal difference of 3 or more.

Or at least ensure that more time is added than spent wasted waiting for the miraculous recovery. Seeing a nice big "10" added for extra time would send a strong message to cheaters. At minimum, though, it should be a yellow.

Now if Uruguay hold on and win, and Costa Rica loses to Italy, then we could have a situation where three teams finish with 3 points for 3nd place next round, right?

Yup. In that scenario Uruguay will always miss the second round. It'll be between Costa Rica and England then. But if that situation arises, put your money on an Italy-Uruguay draw.

So yes. Italy needs to beat Uruguay and Costa Rica, and England needs to absolutely maul Costa Rica to advance.

If Italy win out by only a goal each game, England need to beat Costa Rica 2-0 to make the next round.

In that group, England was the underdog to Uruguay and Italy, it's no real surprise if they go out in the 1st round.

If Uruguay lose and England win, England automatically leap Uruguay. Costa Rica have to drop at least 3 goals and lose both their games for England to advance.

Yup. At the same time, if Italy beats Costa Rica, there's also potential for three teams with 6 points (with Costa Rica over England and Uruguay over Italy).

I'm glad Rooney got his goal, he was favorite to be the scapegoat, the press had already turned on him. This will save him from taking all the blame.

Not a bad game, looked like England were by far the most likely to grab a winner when it got to 1-1. Amazing amount of diving from Sturridge, so good to see that not working out for him.

That was a bit of a drab match. Surprised Japan couldn't score being a man up for almost 60 minutes.

Being realistic, England should win the game against Costa Rica without too much difficulty, but they don't control their destiny. If Italy draw either of their games, England are out.

Shame about England. It really looked like they could put in a second after Rooneys goal, and a complete defensive lapse against one of the best forwards in the world and *POOF*, its over

Best I don't post in this thread for a few days until I calm down ... our tactical approach to the tournament has been absolutely shocking, unless a team can defend in a sensible manner they have no chance at winning.
