FWIW......the motion of that Marlins pitcher has its roots in fast pitch softball. Much like the baseball rules, the softball pitcher has to keep the foot on the ground, but it doesn't stop them from getting that second push-off. We'd see it all the time (I officiated fast-pitch softball for 15 years). I've just never seen it done in baseball.

Lawsuit seeks safety netting for MLB ballparks

An Oakland Athletics season-ticket holder asked a federal court Monday to protect fans from flying bats and balls by ordering Major League Baseball to extend the safety netting at its ballparks the entire length of the foul lines.

The lawsuit filed in the Northern District of California seeks class-action status on behalf of all fans buying season tickets in unprotected areas of major league parks. It is not asking for money; instead, it wants commissioner Rob Manfred to extend the screens that typically cover only a few sections behind the plate so that they run from foul pole to foul pole.

"I think it's important when you have an issue like this not to monetize it, not to say it's about people trying to get a bunch of money," said Steve Berman, a lawyer with the Seattle-based firm of Hagens Berman that has also sued U.S. and international soccer authorities to force them to change the way they handle concussions.

This would suck, it's called bringing a glove and paying attention, people.

Yeah, been lots of talk about doing this. I figured it would be extended to the end of the dugouts which I wouldn't object too much, but certainly not to the foul poles. Talk about overkill.

A+ on the new rules. Now just get rid of the dumb WS home field and the ASG would be perfect.

Doesn't matter. I'm sure the Royals will just be voted into the playoffs.

That's simply false. He was too busy bending over for Bumgarner for most of the game.

Maybe he just wanted to see what it felt like to be a KC Royal in last season's World Series.

So what do you think of each teams Franchise Four?
http://m.mlb.com/news/article/136694...se-fours-named

Funny how Nolan Ryan is on 3 teams.

I would put Clemens over Pedro

Interesting how Dodgers and Yankees are players from 50+ years ago, Several newer Yankees could have made most lists, not sure the same can be said for Dodgers.

I don't like the Mets. Seaver and Piazza were slam dunks but as much as I love Hernandez, he did most of his damage with the Cards. They clearly wanted to avoid Gooden and Strawberry, and both should have been in over Mex and David Wright.

Radio guy made a good point that John Franco probably could have been considered over those two as well.

Yeah, I think they made an effort to avoid some people. For instance, I noticed they went with Beltre for the Rangers instead of Josh Hamilton or Juan Gone.

For the Angels, I didn't have a big issue with the selections, even Trout, given what he is likely to become, but guys like Fregosi and Garrett Anderson and Chuck Finley deserved strong consideration, too.

They also avoided A-Rod (for either Seattle or Texas) and Palmeiro.

But, you could replace Nolan Ryan with two 8-7 pitchers!

I think the decision between Strawberry and Wright is actually closer than it may appear. I think we forget that Strawberry only played for the Mets for 8 years. Now he was fantastic in those 8 years, but in a Franchise Four, that kind of has to be weighed.

The other interesting thing is when you factor in defense, it narrows even further. In terms of career WAR, Wright beats Strawberry, but Strawberry's average WAR per season is a slight bit higher than Wright.

Though if you wanted to put Strawberry in over Hernandez, go ahead. I'd think you want to keep Wright though.

(Heck, Piazza only played 8 seasons for the Mets as well - and his 7 years with the Dodgers were much better than his 8 with the Mets)

So they chose:
Seaver (1st in all time Mets WAR)
Wright (2nd)
Hernandez (12th)
Piazza (13th)

Going by WAR, there were 9 guys more deserving.

I'm sure there were. I didn't read up on everything that went into how these were selected, but did hear a clip earlier about how at least part of it was about who the fans "cared" the most about. So it's not necessarily just a question of measured greatness. Which is why I think Gooden and Strawberry would both deserve to be on there. Hell, of that '86 team, there is zero question Carter was more loved than Hernandez.

As great as Wright was for a stretch, they made the playoffs once with him, his team's biggest legacy will be for September collapses, and he's had trouble staying on the field in 3 of the last 4 years even before this disaster of a season. In terms of his career as a Met, I think it will be looked at as a disappointment down the road.

I disagree. I think it'll be looked at more of a what could have been, but NOT because of Wright, but the pieces around him. And the fact that Wright stayed, when he could have bolted for a big contract makes him appreciated by most Mets fans I know.
