Just to make sure I understand things correctly ...

There is still a chance that England goes through IF
Italy wins out over Costa Rica AND Uruguay (9 points, wins group) +
England beats Costa Rica

THEN 3 teams are tied for 2nd with 3 points each, the team that advances is whichever has the best goal differential in group play (since they would have all lost to Italy while beating each other the first tiebreaker of points earned among tied teams doesn't break the tie).

In other words, head to head doesn't break ties in this scenario (due to the 3-way tie), it goes to GD?

Right?

Not a chance.

And since I'm crazy busy at work today and am DVR-ing the game and will avoid spoilers till afterwards, I'll bow out of this thread until probably like 10PM tonight on that note.

Close. Goal differential is the first tie-breaker, then total goals scored, then head to head. If there is still a tie after those, they draw straws.

Also, it doesn't matter if its a 2 or 3 way tie - goal differential is ALWAYS the first tie-breaker.

So, in a 2-way tie, a team could have lost to another, but still go on due to having better goal differential.

Ignoring the tactics for a moment I'm also dumbfounded that you take a 'core' from a team (Liverpool) in order to ensure they can play as a cohesive unit and replicate their style from the club side which has won plaudits all season ...

Then you ask them to all play in different roles to their normal ones .... negating any advantage which that picking those players might have given you?

I'd like to say I've enjoyed this World Cup - but from the perspective of an England supporter its been bloody painful, first match at least I could put a fair bit down to the heat (although why we played that style in those conditions I have no idea) .... the second matches tactics I can only put down to uncle Roy having $50 on the other team to win ... heck going by the start of the second half his team talk consisted of "We're playing awfully and look like we have no idea what we're doing - lets drop it down a notch or two when we get back out there"

(as I said I shouldn't be posting in here today - feeling somewhat annoyed at present )

Thanks for the verfication / clarification.

An old HS friend swears he heard the announcers say that England was clearly out at the end of yesterday's loss, I was pretty sure I knew otherwise from the comments here & tried to explain the scenario where they could go through ... but that sorta requires me to understand it well enough to explain it

Yesterday was the kind of tactical incompetence that can only come from an England manager at a World Cup. Graham Taylor thinks those tactics and selections were spot on.

Justice for flailing on the ground when Costa Rica had an attacking opportunity.

He calls the light midfield touch where the guy barely touches him, but won't give the penalty in the box when the player has possession and gets railroaded. Stupid.

I'm pulling for the Brits to stay in, but I'm having a hard time rooting against this Costa Rica team. I love the way they play and Italy has Balotelli - so my allegiance may be shifting...

England could have really used a real holding midfielder against Uruguay, especially with such an unseasoned defense. I know everyone said Gerrard had a great season (and he did), but Liverpool's defensive record indicates that much of the value Gerrard brought to the position was offensively-minded, not defensively.

England could have really used someone like Carrick to hold and steady things when under the kind of pressure Suarez or Pirlo can provide. His exclusion still baffles me, no matter how shitty a season Man Utd had.

Well, at least Roy played some young guys. Hopefully the next manager will complete the clean-out starting immediately.

And on that point, I wonder if we saw Rooney score his first and last WC goal. Will he be in the squad for the next WC? Based on his current trajectory, I'd say no. These should also be the final international games for Gerrard and Lampard, IMO. And if Sturridge can't learn how to attack without falling over his inclusion should be questioned.

The main problem with this official is that he's falling for all the Italian play-acting, even the more subtle examples. It's a constant frustration for me that at each WC we will have some officials who, while they might perform well in their home league (this ref is from Chile), they don't have the experience of officiating at the top level.

It is akin to having an NCAA ref officiate an NFL game (and we know how that all turned out). Thankfully we're usually back to top-flight refs by the quarters.

Shocking refereeing, most of it going Italy's way

flere - if there is one good thing about England going out today (if Italy don't score twice) it's that he should have a green light to start the youngsters in the final game. Barkley in for Gerrard should be a no brainer and I wonder if he doesn't give Shaw a start at full back as well

I agree that Sturridge definitely had some balance issues yesterday in particular, and Gerrard/Lampard should be done.

Not only were United poor all year, but so was Carrick: there was no way he was selectable for the WC.

The one thing that's beginning to dawn on me, if Luke Shaw is as good as he is supposed to be (and I'll be honest, I've not seen enough of him to know) then we took the wrong left back. Baines was not good either going forward or in defence (I had him more culpable than Jagielka on Suarez's first goal). So if Shaw takes over, maybe we should have given Cole one last tournament, rather than gives Baines, who in essence is an old rookie in international terms, his only one?

But it's difficult to be too critical: we were the third ranked team in the group, we didn't have expectations going in, and frankly did a lot better against the Italians than i thought we would. OK, looks like we can't defend for toffee, but if you have two full backs who can't defend, two centre backs who are not blessed with pace (although I thought Cahill was pretty good last night to be fair) and no real anchor man or screen, what do we expect?

It was common consensus that if we go and play postively with some of the younger players, if it doesn't work we won't be too critical... We've done that, it's not worked out, and we're being highly critical? It's a bit revisionist tbh, and unfair on the squad and the manager.

We're just not that good. We have to wake up to that, and hope that the tournament experience will help the younger players in the future years
