Sandusky testifying on the stand is must-see-tv to the extreme. There is no way he can pull that off without looking even worse than he does now.

I guess people who do evil things need some kind of justification, they don't just sit around believing they're evil. Sandusky figured if he genuinely helped 10 kids that made it OK to molest the 11th (and like you said, he probably didn't even really believe molesting the 11th was that bad a thing, or maybe he had mixed feelings on it).

I am starting to worry that the insanity plea might be a route for Sandusky. The defense can just say, "Hey, he thinks what he did was ok and there is clearly something wrong in his head. Perhaps he was abused as a child or something. I recommend rehabilitation instead of prison."

FWIW, his lawyer is nearly as big a piece of shit as Sandusky.

Legal people.....isn't some of this pretty significant misconduct or even perjuery, the kind of stuff that might win some sort of appeal?

Jerry Sandusky trial: State police troopers give conflicting testimony about discussions with alleged victims | PennLive.com

And then of course this lovely stuff....

RT @cvmikesisak: Neighbor says Victim 1 mother boasted about being getting "nice big house in the country" when #Sandusky case settled.

Now really, given what the Second Mile was, wouldn't we for the most part expect that sort of stuff from the parents of the kids involved?

If it's being discussed and attacked by the defense at the trial, it's all good. It's up to the defense to the make the argument that the contradictions are important, and it's up to the jury to decide whether they buy it.

Problems arise when when you have the trial, and then later it's revealed that testimony was inconsistent with other prior out-of-court statements, and the prosecution didn't turn over the potential contradictions to the defense before the trial. (that was one of the reasons for the Ted Stevens conviction being thrown out). People testifying inconsistently or even falsely don't nullify a case, they just potentially raise reasonable doubt. The important thing is that everybody has all the info at the trial so the jury can make that call.

Edit: And I totally agree on the parent thing. A defense attorney will use that as a possible motive to lie, and that's fine, but the prosecution should be able to explain that away (without tearing the parents apart too much and risking alienating the jury that way). Defense will try to muddy the waters, the state will try to keep the jury focused on the crime charged.

What is striking me about the defense is that there doesn't seem to have been much of an attempt to refute the actual accusations.
  • Coaches testify that there were times he was in the shower and nothing happened.
  • His wife testifies that Jerry "usually" went to bed before her.
  • Testimony about histrionic personality disorder attempts to explain the creepy letters, but doesn't touch on the actual accusations.
  • Not in evidence yet, but there's also Jerry's grand proclamation that he didn't go after every kid he was with.
Dottie today evidently did cut into the credibility of two of the...what..six guys that testified against him, but still. If I'm in that jury box right now, about the only thing that could sway me would be some really compelling testimony from Sandusky himself. Maybe the defense knows that they have a bad case and him testifying is a Hail Mary that maybe he can garner enough sympathy from a juror or two to get a hung jury?

Defense rests, and Sandusky doesn't testify. No rebuttal from the state either, so the jury will get the case tomorrow after closing arguments.

Is this one of those situations where a decision on a verdict could take time to
play out due to the number of counts/charges?

Also means the recent exposed interview tape isn't going to be part of the evidence.

Ya, 51 counts will take a while to sort through but the subject matter isn't really complicated, it's really just credibility determinations as opposed to having to sort out some complicated fact pattern. I wouldn't be shocked if they came back before the weekend, if they get close to a full day Thursday and a full day Friday.

This seems ... quick. Why do some cases get drug out forever, but this one was super fast? I thought there would be dozens testifying against Sandusky and it would take weeks.

Pretty much never be shocked if a jury can finish before a weekend

It's really a mystery, since what juries actually do hasn't been studied very often. Everybody has their own guesses about timing, and what it means if they come back quickly or it takes longer, but it's all guessing. One of my guesses is that credibility-based cases CAN take a much shorter time, because there's nothing really to analyze, as opposed to cases with competing technical expert testimony, for example. Also, ya, I think there's always some momentum to end before a weekend, or before the end of a day.

It's probably your perception of court cases being shaped by stuff like OJ which took forever, and stuff like Casey Anthony as well. Meanwhile I'm sure certain capital murder cases finish in a week.

I'm hoping these are being taken out of context in some way...

This is why I am fascinated by the law. The judge is making an interpretation of the law and it is an interpretation that people will not agree with. I think Sandusky is a pedo and should be in jail.

So, did the defense prove that he raped all of these young men with sexual intent or was it just poor judgement?

Out of context. Other articles included quotes along the lines of it not be illegal to shower with a boy or to rub their back.

Pretty obvious those are out of context. I don't even need the full context to realize that.

1 because he was charge twice for the same crime, and 2 because the prosecutors didn't present any evidence during the trial concerning them. He still has something like 48 counts against him.

I'd like to know who the "we" are? Wonder if Sandusky will begin giving up names during the sentencing phase?

Could be just molesterspeak. These are kids from broken families without structure, part of luring them in was making them feel a part of something bigger, the school, the organization, college football in general - with all the trips, and games, and access. He tried to make it not seem like a 1-on-1 man/boy relationship, but a part of something bigger. Like he was trying to make it seem like those communities endorsed him and his relationships, so it was all good to be involved.

I totally agree with that, but that letter also mentions a redacted name -- the "we" is Sandusky and that redacted name.

Anyway..

I'm just wondering if stuff like this isn't only going to make things worse if the jury doesn't come down on him like society thinks he should.

I made it through all six of them, although only two have the proper length to be considered letters IMO.

It's interesting the emotional manipulation and flat-out guilt tripping he uses in some of these. Sounds like an angsty teenage boy instead of a 50-60whateversomething football coach.

He hopes that it will last, return, if it has left. The players miss him.

They say, “come back, (Victim 4)!” “Stay with us, (Victim 4)!” Jer would love to have the good times back. The players shout, “be with us to the end!”

That is some nasty, manipulative shit. LaVar Arrington has personally demanded you return my manlove. Those guys have to be pretty devastated/enraged to see their names show up in those letters, in that context.

Those letters are just disgusting. "Jer" has some serious issues and anything short of him being castrated and hung upside down on a light pole is an injustice to society and those kids he abused.
