Europe gets 13. Y'all are fine. And South America already gets 4.5 out of 10 teams!

I'd be happier with an idea that takes Asia's half spot and gives it to Africa (so basically an African squad can take on Australia every year). I'd also like it if Africa had a better system for qualification - Egypt is arguably the best team in the continent but yet losing a home and home doomed it.

If I had my way I would give Europe 16 spots, South America 6, and let the rest of the world fight over the remaining spots. When another continent reaches the final then we can renegotiate.

I say 64 teams total, single elimination like the NCAA tourney.

What's to play for in the final game of Groups A-D

A:
Brazil: Advances with draw, wins group with a win of the same size or bigger as Mexico's (also wins some scenarios with Mexico having a bigger by 1 victory than Brazil's Victory)
Mexico: Advances with draw or win versus Croatia, wins group with a win, a Brazil draw or loss, or a Brazil win where mexico's margin of victory is two greater than Brazil's (some scenarios where Mexico's margin of victory is +1, Mexico Wins group). Advances with a loss IF Brazil loses by 2 more than Mexico does.
Croatia: Must win to advance, wins group with a win, and a Brazil draw or loss to Cameroon

Australia: Eliminated
Spain: Eliminated

C:
Colombia: Clinched qualification, wins group with a win or draw against Japan,
Ivory Coast: Advances with a win over Greece, advances with a draw IF Japan does not win by two against Colombia. Wins group if they beat greece, and Japan beats Colombia (with a combined differential of 4 goals)
Japan: Advances with a win over Colombia AND Ivory Coast loss (IF Greece blows out Ivory Coast, Japan could still miss out on GD), also may advance if they win by two or more against Colombia and Ivory Coast Draws
Greece: Must win, and either Colombia beats or ties Japan, or if Japan wins, Greece blows out Colombia by 2-3 more than Japan wins

D:
Costa Rica: Clinched qualification, wins group with a tie or win against England, could also win group if they lose and the winner of the Italy-Uruguay game does not make up goal differential.
Italy: Advances with a win or draw against Uruguay (on GD). Wins group if they win, Costa Rica loses, and Italy makes up the +3 GD advantage
Uruguay: Advances with a win over Italy. Wins group if they win, Costa Rica loses, and Uruguay makes up the +4 GD
England: Eliminated

I actually don't think the WC expansion to 40 teams is a bad idea. Make it 8 groups of 5. Gives an extra game in group stage which I think roots out some of the flukes. And I don't think it's a bad thing to have more nations competing. Seems like it's a good thing for the sport of soccer.

I guess I just like the idea of the group stage being expanded a bit.

When it gets to 13-16 in Europe, those teams aren't going to make the final either. They are just as likely to crash out in group stages as anyone from Asia and Africa. The bonus for the later being that you foster the sport in those countries and you can see some interesting players you don't normally.

Also $10 says you would have decreased North America if that post was written before Costa Rica beat Italy

How would they reach the final if the majority of the world only got 10 out of 32 spots?

Another random question since we're in between matches. Do any leagues have two refs on the field at once, similar to the change hockey made a few years back? Just seems like they spend so much time getting into position that it could leave some holes in what they can see.

True. But I like the flukes. I like that Costa Rica is out. Make it five games, and does that happen? Will it make it more likely that the heavy teams will advance out?

I think one of the issues to consider is how long do you want the tournament? Or do you want to squish the games closer together (which would really make the exhaustion obv by the end of the tourney).

If you want proper rest, it'd have to be another week of games... so 5 weeks for the World Cup.

I don't like it for the same reasons I hate the European Championship expansion to 24 teams. The more teams you have, the more bad teams you allow into the tournament.

Won't they just get filtered out in the group stage?

Though I agree that I'm not too keen on expansion as 32 allows for the World Cup to span a month and that seems about the right amount of time for the tournament.

They will not get out of the group stage, but there will be one sided games in the group stage.

Ideally you want a tournament like Euro 2008, where every team in the tournament is expecting to qualify for the second round, and every group game matters.
