I could see an argument for the "modern era" being when Bird & Magic entered the league, and that was the 79-80 season.

The blacktop-colored floor in the Big 12 tournament looks pretty neat.

It feels like the NIL era has excerbated the "end of season blues" for teams clearly out of it, in a variety of college sports. Case in point - Oregon scored 12 points in the 1st half yesterday, and AZ State had 16 today. Guys are ready to get into the portal and find a better situation, maybe head off to spring break.

In Arizona State's case i think Hurley quit on that group first when it became clear he was getting fired at the end of this season.

I completely understand cancelling this but every ad I see during games is for some gambling site, casino, or crypto scam. One of the owners just got caught using a fake fraudulent charity to subvert the salary cap. Seems banning a strip club promotion is far down on the list of shit they should be tackling.

Just watched the fourth quarter of the Bam game. I'm not really sure what all the outrage is about. It was like when the Warriors would just feed Steph the ball at the end of games.nin terms of horrible basketball that has been played on the NBA the last half-decade, this was pretty benign. It was really only from 4:30 to 1:20 left in the 4th when things got loopy.

No, I don't actually consider that any sort of record. Wilt's 100 is still the record. I was looking up what the top five on that list and Bam was leading the "modern era"

I take "modern era" as meaning it's not as meaningful.
Wilt's record was done in a league without a 3 pointer, and a league where all talent was concentrated on to 9 teams.

If someone came out and scored a 101 but got 75 of those points off of 25/45 three point attempts it would need a HUGE asterisk. Elgin Baylor scoring 71 in 1960 is more impressive than the new "modern era" record.

In both the Wilt and Kobe games, their teams were clearly feeding them the ball, committing fouls, and doing whatever to get them as many points as possible.

I still remember when Shaq almost led the league in scoring as a rookie and the Spurs fed David Robinson all game in the season finale to get him 70+ points to pass Shaq (who I think played a "normal" game and scored 30-35) for the title. The funny thing is, just recently Dominque Wilkins claimed that David Stern told Donald Sterling and the Clippers to sit their starters so Robinson could go off. Dominique was on that team. The bench played way more minutes than the starters, and no starter played more than 25 minutes.

It's happened many times without outcry. I remember '94 when David Robinson and Shaq were battling for the scoring title and the Spurs fed Robinson 41 shots and 25 free throws when the next highest shot total was 10. In Kobe's 81 point game he took 46 shots and 20 free throws while Smush Parker was 2nd with 11 shots. The entire Lakers bench took 11 shots that game.

My daughter had softball practice so I had no idea what was going on. I saw the score and that Miami was up big late in the 4th and that Bam was still in the game and I was like, why is he still playing?

NIL money has been a pretty interesting equalizer for college coaches that are amazing recruiters but are more average at gameday coaching and/or developing talent.

Hurley, Calipari, Self and it seems like Penny Hardaway (and I want to say Mick Cronin, but I'm not as sure on him just yet) all seem to fit into this category. They are good coaches, but they used to be able to overcome mistakes with more talented rosters but now it seems like having good freshmen doesn't always do it like it used to.

I am happy that Bam got the record as a Heat fan. Also, it was a better story historically to go from Wilt to Kobe when you looked at the most points scored in a game list.

All of the other talk about the accomplishment filled the NBA media cycle with a month left in the regular season unless you wanted to hear about the Lakers, the Spurs or the Celtics.

Real shocking that Devries went from missing the NCAA Tournament at West Virginia to missing it at Indiana. I don't like the hire anymore this year than I did last year.

Soon the Brad Stevens talk will start up again…

For me, IU b-ball is in a “prove it” state for me. Until there is direct evidence that we’re good again, I will keep my expectations level at we are average at best. This year’s team was more fun to watch than the last regime, but I have been largely tuned out since the Kentucky game.

I still think he's a good basketball coach and he may do better with Tucker graduating because he is very much a daddy ball coach. His personality, or lack thereof, may be what holds him back. He seems completely unable to build connections with people. It's not normal for the AD to build your coaching staff for you because you can't even attract your former assistants.

Anyways, I'm just bitter at the timing of when IU apparently reached out through his agent and when he decided to shut Tucker down to preserve a redshirt and then not being straight with the AD about IU until he announced he had accepted the job. Nothing against IU, I just hope he fails.

IU not hiring Dusty May when they could have was such a miss. Dusty is a piece of crap, but he's a really good coach.

2 tournaments in 10 years with one of those years being the play-in game and a 4 seed or better only 4 times in the last ~30 years were some facts I didn't expect to hear about that blueblood program.

The CBI will not be holding a tournament this year. Is this one of those "If a tree falls in the woods..." situations?

It must be awfully hard to try to run a second or third-rung post-season tournament when most teams lose multiple members within seconds of their seasons ending. I can remember when my daughter's softball team was hanging on 29 wins and the coach told them on the bus to the conference tournament that they needed to win a 30th game so they could qualify for some stupid post-season tournament. None of the girls wanted to keep playing into summer break. The coach wanted a resume-builder because he was old and afraid the new AD was going to force him to retire. The team went out and lost the first game 7-0 and the season was over. Helluva motivational speech lol. Thisa was the first year of the formal portal process, too. Now throw NIL on top of all of that!

I wonder if a Champions League style of choosing teams would be better than a selection committee. Just throw out some coefficients based on previous experience, choose how many teams each conference gets based on those, and be done with it.

Good for them. The energy for that game was fun. They did get an SMU team missing its best player and that had only beat Syracuse in 6 games since he'd been out. Given what I heard about the surprise he wasn't playing last night, sounds like SMU kept his status ambiguous/quiet to ensure they got in and then revealed he wasn't going to play (which might have been the case all along).

Reading between the lines a little, I'm not sure if SMU deceived the NCAA as much as the player may have bailed on SMU.

Teammate quote after the game "He made the best decision for himself at the end of the day." He praised the guy before and after that sentence but that's sure an interesting choice of words.

Well shit. Cade Cunningham dagnosed with a collapsed lung and expected to miss extended time. Not ideal for a #1 seed who only has one true scoring option.

Brian Anderson sounded sick calling the Texas/NC State game. He's a decent announcer and all, but as a bonus, it appears we'll get Jason Benetti calling the games in Buffalo.

High Point. Good for Cam'Ron Fletcher. Dude was at UK, got injured, went to FSU, got injured... not sure where else he's been but (seems like) 10 years later, makes the tourney and scores 14 in the upset.

Not to take anything away from High Point but they had no business being a 12 seed and that kind of fucked over Wisconsin. Same with Siena as a 16 seed.

I know the committee likes downplaying success of mid-majors and small conferences but the poor seeding just screws over the high seed teams.

When my daughter played HS basketball, she was featured in the local paper in a close-up picture as she was about to score on a breakaway layup, going up for the shot. She missed it - but of course, the picture doesn't capture that part. But it's been a running joke in our family ever since.
