My CONCACAF leanings say go Honduras. The fact that I have Ecuador in the Calcutta pool and the Honduran squad is a bunch of bitches has me going for Ecuador.

Money and karma for the win, Alex. Go Ecuador!

They're technically still alive. a 3-0 win over Switzerland and a 1-0 loss for Ecuador vs. France would put Honduras into the second round.

GG by Costa Rica. They didn't have many chances, but they deserved that goal (either via the PK they shoulda had or as a result of that play), and Italy looked lethargic and were continually caught offside. Poor game.

Great game by Costa Rica though - full credit to them. Makes the Italy-Uruguay game important...ugh.

If you want proper rest, it'd have to be another week of games... so 5 weeks for the World Cup.

Realistically, you can't make the groups eight of five teams. While that only expands the number of games played by one for each team, it means two extra rounds of games because each team has to have a bye not playing someone. So it's effectively another eight to ten days added to the schedule, not to mention determining what would be the fairest way to assign those bye dates in the schedule (would it be better to miss the first round and play four straight or play four straight and skip the last or some combination that splits the games around a bye?).

If it ever went to 40, it would more likely go to 10 four team groups and just increase the number of venues and games played per day to account for the additional teams. It would also mean that only the ten group winners would be guaranteed to advance with the six best runners-up joining them, leaving four second-place teams going home. (either that or going to 20 teams in the knockout round with the eight worst second place teams going at it in the play-in round, but that would also expand the schedule by at least four or five days)

This Argentina-Iran game has high "national hero" potential for the iranian GK.

Shocked that the ref hasn't doled out any cards for these tackles. They aren't hard, but they aren't even close to the ball. That's at least the 7th one I've seen.

Iran has honestly had the best two scoring chances of anyone in this game. Not many, but they've been of good quality.

This game reminds me of your usual FM game where my team is vastly superior in talent but just can't do anything tactically. All that is left is Iran scoring an injury time goal at 90 +5 after three minutes of injury time have been awarded

Iran had more legit scoring chances today than in that embarrassing Nigeria game.

Me thinks this spells trouble for Argentina after the group stage.

Now onto the Germany Ghana game. Gonna watch this one at home with my regular to-view-with group away for the weekend and me not being into this whole crazed atmosphere at public places here.

Kevin Prince Boateng playing for Ghana, making it the rare occasion where 2 brothers face each other at a World Cup (Both grew up in Germany, Jerome chose germany while KPB chose Ghana after after getting a guarantee for a spot in the 2010 WC)

no change for Germany, same 11 as against Portugal. Tactic likely the same as well with 3 half-strikers, 3 central midfielders and no real wing backs.

I haven't crunched the numbers to confirm, but a friend of mine who is really into this said US is actually best served if this ends in a draw.

I was at the gym so didn't see the time when Argentina scored (I'm fucking blind without my glasses and I was on the weights at that point).

Heartbreak for Iran - they played a hell of a game.

Argentina looked a lot like Italy yesterday - lacking any urgency for a lot of the game (combined with Iran closing them down anytime they got anywhere close to goal).

I hafta think it's the first time ever two brothers have faced each other on opposite teams at the World Cup, no? Or did Germany face Ghana in 2010 and that was the first time?

Also - I hear that the two of them are no longer speaking after KPB ended Ballack's career?

A draw only matters if we get all three points tomorrow. I think a German win is probably still the best unless we are getting greedy and want to win the whole group.

If Ghana wins, we could get knocked out with 2 wins still
