Probably an older team whose window is closing, rather than a young team just entering that window.

You might be right.. but Houston could use a SP like him for the next few years.

Keuchel, McCullers, McHugh is a good, young base and they just added Kazmir. They have a lot of talent in their system, too. I suspect the Astros are comfortable with their rotation right now, and for the foreseeable future.

What does adding Hamels do?

I'd like to see him go to Texas - or anywhere other than the Dodgers!

I think if Hamels is dealt to Texas, then Gallardo will be moved to the Dodgers.

So completely dooming the Dodgers chances?

I'm wondering where Mike Leake ends up...

Rumor has it the Giants are seriously interested in Hamels. Not sure they really have the horses to get the deal done (their farm system is deep, but doesn't have an impact name), but they're still working on it.

It also sounds like if they can't get an ace-type arm (Hamels, Price) that they probably won't make a move. Which makes sense, but is sort of atypical for the Giants.

Tulo to the Jays. Never thought he'd get out of Colorado.

Very excited to see Tulo coming to Toronto. Looks like Castro is going to the Rockies in addition to Reyes. He's a very young, but talented kid, whose got great stuff, throws really hard, but was rushed up to the show this year.

Doesn't effect pitching needs, but a chance to upgrade with a player like Tulo is an easy decision. Can still upgrade the pitching many many other ways. Donny and Tulo playing together now...WOW!!

I figured Alex was a sunk cost and might not even break camp, but he's having a helluva season. He won't win any awards, not will he deserve any respect, but IF he's doing this legit I tip my cap to him. Happy 40th, Alex

I'm on the other side of the fence. They traded away two of their top 5 prospects (both pitchers) and got more offense. They are already leading the league in offense. Maybe they'll win a few extra games 11-9 instead of losing 9-8.

Yeah, not sure I like it unless there are more deals to come. They need pitching, especially if they trade major prospects.

the defensive help at SS should help the pitching. I think its a steal and I wish the Mets had the stones to do something like that.

I'm not sure why trading for an ELITE player has anything to do with wether they acquire a pitcher at a later date. The cupboard aint bare.

Players like Tulo do not get traded very often, and don't sign in Toronto. It's an opportunity to get an ELITE position player, much in the same way Josh Donaldson was acquired.

This was a opportunity to get better today, and tomorrow.

I don't believe they are done. Trading Jeff Hoffman stings, but at least he doesn't go for a rental.

Does a great hitter help a weak hitting/great pitching team more than a great hitting/weak pitching team? I would think the impact would be the same, or would depend only on the difference in production at the position being upgraded.

Isn't he another in a long line of Coors Field superstars? Dont get me wrong his away statistics are solid (.817 OPS) but not sure they are worth the haul the Blue Jays gave up.

They said the same about Holliday and he did pretty well in St. Louis. In the last 3 seasons, Tulu's had these splits (Home/Away):1.046/.848. But, Like Holliday, a lot of that is Dodger Stadium (.470 OPS) and Petco (.762). I think his numbers will be fine in Toronto. My bigger concern is all the wear on his knees from that turf there.

I think the injury risk is big, and why I was against the Mets pursuing him especially with what it would have cost. And that's because I know that if he went to shit, the franchise would be screwed for a long time with this ownership group.

That being said, getting out from Reyes' contract is huge considering his declining skills. I hadn't realized there was such discussion on moving him to the OF because of his defense but the numbers are pretty rough.

How quickly things change. I seem to remember a certain poster obsessed over the AL wild card race last season. I guess now the wild card doesn't matter.

So I heard on the radio this morning that Wade Boggs was the ONLY player in the 20th century to record 7 straight 200+ hit seasons.

That makes Ichiro the only player in MLB history with 10 straight 200+ hit seasons.

Disappointed to see Manaea go, but if it results in a World Series it will be more than worth it.

I am still not used to seeing the club being so aggressive near the deadline. It's a nice change.

I'm not a huge fan of the Zobrist trade. We've got the division race in a great spot, so what you're really doing is getting a player that you believe can help you in the postseason. Makes perfect sense with Cueto. Not so sure about Zobrist given his previous postseason stats.

Cueto's postseason statistics aren't exactly eye-popping either.

I get the argument you're trying to make, but you picked a poor comparison for postseason success.

Fair enough. Probably a better way of putting it is that Cueto was a clear need with no other options. I think we'd be fine without Zobrist. We've got options there.

I agree with this.

Granted, Cueto had ONE bad appearances in the NLCS that heavily skews his numbers, but we need a front end rotation guy. I don't know if we'll get him longterm, think he wants too much money, but winning a WS would be worth the rental.

No data to back this but he always feels to me to be a super streaky pitcher. Might just be good timing for a nice streak to get better return.

It sounds like MizzouRah was more on the right page than me and the Astros are all-in on a Hamels offer. Peter Gammons doesn't seem to think he'll OK the trade, though...

Looks like Latos finally found a taker. Depending on the prospects of course, but I think both are solid pickups for LA:

What a bizarre game last night between the Rangers and Yankees. Started off strange when the Yankees leadoff hitter reached base on catcher's interference. The Rangers scored 5 runs in the bottom of the first, then the Yankees scored 11 in the top of the second, and 10 more runs unanswered.
