PV teacher accused of misconduct with student

An English teacher and spirit line coach at Paradise Valley High School was arrested today on 29 counts of sexual conduct with a minor.

Jennifer Mally, 26, was taken into custody at the school's administrative offices in Northeast Phoenix. The parents of a 16-year-old male student contacted the school Wednesday morning and school officials then called police. Police were told that it had been an ongoing situation that began in October.

Mally, a second year teacher, was placed on administrative leave last Wednesday after PV High School Principal Cara Herkamp heard rumors and started an investigation.

Phoenix police are looking into whether there are any other victims. Anyone with information is urged to call Phoenix Police Family Investigations Bureau at (602) 534-2121.

School officials will be sending home a letter Thursday notifying parents, said Judi Willis, a spokeswoman for the district. The school will also have counselors available to students.

Teacher Busted for Lesbian Sex with Student


A New Jersey Health and Physical Education high school teacher was arrested Friday on charges of first degree aggravated sexual assault of a minor. 28-Year old Erica Umosella is accused of having a consensual sexual affair with a 17- year old female student. Umosella was released on $50,000 bail Wednesday night.

Consent
Although the teacher and student may have allegedly considered the sex consensual, the law does not allow for sexual consent between a teacher and minor student.

A Coach and Teacher
Ms. Umosella was a teacher and coach of the seventeen-year old girl in question at the Kingsway Regional High School in Glassboro, New Jersey. According to police, the alleged victim is a senior at the high school, and is a member of the field hockey team that Ms. Umosella coached. Ms. Umosella was suspended from teaching and coaching this past Thursday.

Who Turned Them In?
Police received an anonymous letter from the Kingsway High School superintendent, Ave Altersitz, reporting the crime. According to ABC News, Altersitz received the letter late Tuesday night. The school's principal Thomas Coleman also apparently received a letter similar. Neither the principal nor Altersitz know who sent the letters or where they came from.

Sexual Affair
According to prosecutors, the affair has gone on for the past month, and has taken place largely in Ms. Umosella's apartment.

Sexual Abuse
Most experts would agree that because of the age of the alleged victim, and because of the teacher-student relationship, the alleged events in this case would constitute sexual harassment or abuse. Many experts liken the student-teacher relationship to that of a parent-child or priest-child relationship. Thus, they say, any abuse suffered has the potential to cause long-term psychological damage.

Prevalence
The U.S. Department of Education issued a report in 2004 on the prevalence of teacher-child sexual abuse in the U.S. According to the report, one in ten public school students will suffer some type of inappropriate sexual behavior at the hands of a teacher. This may range from an inappropriate comment to a physical act. The report states that 4.5 million students have suffered "sexual misconduct" by a school teacher, administrator, or other employee.

BRISBANE high school teacher Amanda Louise Thompson was yesterday ordered to stand trial on almost 230 charges of sexually abusing a female student over a two-year period.

Despite Thompson's arrest by detectives on March 14 last year, Queensland laws prohibited naming her until Magistrate Basil Gribbin yesterday ruled there was sufficient evidence to order she stand trial.

Thompson, now 26, stood stoney-faced as Mr Gribbin asked her if she wanted to say anything before she was committed for trial or wished to enter a plea to the charges.
In a quiet voice, Thompson simply replied: "No, thank you."

Thompson stands charged with 229 counts of indecently dealing with a child under 16 and in her care.

In a four-day part-heard committal hearing, which started in November and finally concluded yesterday, the Beenleigh Magistrate's Court was told Thompson was seen by witnesses hugging, kissing, fondling and having oral sex with the girl, then aged between 14 and 16, and plying her with liquor.

The court was told that Thompson's then husband had become concerned about his wife's relationship with the student when he frequently found them lying in closed rooms or under a blanket upon his arrival home from work.

Prosecutors allege Thompson repeatedly slept in the same bed as the girl at her Boronia Heights home, 30km south of Brisbane, and also at the student's family home.

Mr Gribbin granted Thompson conditional bail and remanded her for trial in the Beenleigh District Court on a date to be fixed.

FLINT - A Northern Academy teacher has been accused of having sex with a student, the district's interim superintendent confirmed Wednesday.

Linda Thompson said Wednesday that the alleged incident happened a few months ago, but she declined to comment further.

The teacher is on administrative leave, Principal Fred White said Wednesday.

White, who oversees students in 10th through 12th grades, also declined to comment further, as did Flint police.

Jeff Clothier, who represents the 16-year-old victim, said he believes it all started with an "inappropriate relationship" between the young man and the female teacher.

"That led to text messages from the teacher after school hours and eventually led to sexual intercourse at her home," he said.

Clothier said his client said the same day he was arrested for armed robbery, he had smoked marijuana, consumed alcohol and had sex with the teacher.

"He had never gotten into trouble before," Clothier said.

"Pretty much our position is when the school found out about it, they did the responsible thing and put the teacher on administrative leave. My clients did the right thing by not taking it into their own hands.

"It's been three months, and we're just waiting for the police department to do their job."

"I just want to see justice be served," he added. "I think if it were a girl who was assaulted by a male teacher, there would a public outcry about this being a horrible thing. ... But because it's a woman teacher and male child, it doesn't seem like anyone even cares."

Northern's White referred other questions to district spokesman Craig Carter, who was not at Wednesday's board meeting and could not immediately be reached for comment.

TAMPA -- Tampa Police arrested a Middleton High School yesterday teacher yesterday after she admitted having a sexual relationship with a 15 year old student there.

Police arrested 33 year old Christina Butler, who teaches 9th grade and charged her with lewd and lacivious battery.

Last night officers were conducting surveillance at a local apartment complex when they saw a group of teenagers in a Jeep Cherokee driving erratically on 24th Street.

After pulling the car over, the officers determined the car belonged to Butler. After questioning the driver he told them he did not have his license and that his friend Christina let him use the car.

While waiting for Butler to arrive on scene, a passenger in the car told an officer that the driver was in a relationship with Butler.

When asked what kind of relationship, the passenger just smiled and said "I don't ask what they do, they are just good friends" and smiled again, according to police.

According to sources, the encounters happened off school property.

When Butler arrived on scene, she initially told officers the relationship was platonic, but later did admit to having a sexual relationship with the boy.

Butler is now out of jail on a $7,500 bond.

Police seek Nebraska teacher, 25, and 13-year-old boy

OMAHA, Nebraska (AP) -- Authorities searched Thursday for a 13-year-old boy and a female middle school teacher believed to be on the run from central Nebraska after police began investigating whether the pair had an intimate relationship.


Teacher Kelsey Peterson, shown in 2006, is charged with kidnapping and child abuse.

Kelsey Peterson, 25, a sixth-grade math teacher and basketball coach at Lexington Middle School, was placed on administrative leave last week. A judge issued an arrest warrant Monday charging her with kidnapping, child abuse and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Authorities believed the two were traveling together in Peterson's car, and police nationwide were notified about them. Court documents said the boy was last seen October 26.

"We're still focused on locating both of them, whether they're together or not," Dawson County Attorney Elizabeth Waterman said Thursday. "I think right now anything is possible."

The boy, 13-year-old Fernando Rodriguez, was an eighth-grader at the school, but district Superintendent Todd Chessmore said he wasn't sure whether Peterson was his teacher.

The Associated Press and CNN.com generally do not identify people who may be victims of sex crimes, but the boy's name has been widely publicized as police search for him.

Court documents showed authorities had recovered several e-mails and letters in which the two professed their affection for one another.

In letters, the boy called Peterson his "Baby Gurl" and said their relationship was "just not about the sex but that it was pretty good," according to court documents.

Court documents say Peterson's school-issued laptop contained letters to the student, including one from April saying she loved him, thought he loved her, was "100 percent faithful" to him and would always be faithful.

The boy's aunt, Laura Rodriguez, told KRVN-AM in Lexington that the family believed Peterson gave the boy a cell phone without his family's knowledge so she could reach him more easily.

Police said the boy contacted his family over the weekend and said the two were in Grand Island, Nebraska, about 85 miles east of Lexington. Police also said the pair were apparently spotted Friday night at a Denver convenience store, and Sunday in Ogallala, in western Nebraska near the northeast tip of Colorado.

According to court documents, Rodriguez told police she talked to her nephew by phone, and that he asked her whether a visa or passport was required to travel to Mexico.

Police referred questions Thursday to Waterman, who would not say where police were focusing their search or comment on reports about where the pair were spotted.

Lexington, a farming and meatpacking town of about 10,000, is about 220 miles west of Omaha in central Nebraska.

I think she got hosed on this one (pardon the pun) but she followed every rule of probation including getting a job and apparently, according to her lawyer, was on track for an early release. She works in a restaurant where one person had a few month before they turned 18 and she gets arrested for talking to them? Garbage and I hope the judge sees through this public vendetta.

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- A former Lawrence High School teacher has been sentenced to nearly five years in prison for having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old student.

In addition to the four years and 11 months' prison time, Meredith Kane, 24, will be required to register as a sex offender. She and the boy had a sexual relationship from fall 2006 until she was arrested in March.

Kane's attorney James Rumsey had asked for probation so she could be treated for bipolar disorder and partly because the victim testified that Kane should not go to prison.

But Douglas County District Court Judge Stephen Six held Kane responsible, and said he believes a sexual relationship with a teacher is "extremely injurious" to the boy's health.

Kane pleaded guilty in July to one count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child.

"I've lost my son for a short period of time," the victim's mother said. "I'm seeing glimpses of him back, but a 15-year-old can't live like a 20-year-old."
