I think now that this is beat down, OSU has lost any opportunity, barring something crazy.

Nah. USC has two chances to lose their way out, neither of which would be "crazy". Clemson is done. (I count LSU over UGAg as "something crazy")

Ohio State just needs one bit of help to stay in I think.

So let’s say uGA and Michigan win out.

TCU and USC lose one of their games.

Who are your 4 teams at that point?

It’s crazy that Michigan and Ohio St each only played 8 home games this year. I feel like that should eliminate Ohio State unless a whole lot of things go wrong above them. I feel bad for Ryan Day - he seems like a great guy (and is obviously a great coach) but he keeps just missing. Being unestablished and following Tressel and Meyer (with Fickell sort of over his shoulder at all times) and doing what he’s done is pretty impressive.

Looking forward to more Harbaugh in the news, though. Always entertaining in an uncomfortable way.

If both TCU and USC lose, it would probably be Bama and OSU. The bigger question is if one them lose. I think the way the committee tends to slant, Bama would go in over OSU.

edit: Barring an Auburn miracle.

The best evidence that Hugh Freeze is leaving is that Liberty is losing to NM State 49-14.

I sure hope so

I really like Day a lot too. He runs his program the right way and isn't a complete asshole/horrible person like the previous coach. He just isn't the best gameday coach.

He probably needs to let Wilson take over the offense completely and manage the team better. That punt in the 3rd quarter with momentum on the line was brutal. It netted like 20 yards of field possession after almost getting blocked. The seat is going to get hot after this game though and that just makes things tougher.

Washingtons loss to 2-7 ASU really stings now. Assuming they win the Apple Cup a one loss UW with the only loss on the road to UCLA would at least be in the discussion.

TCU loss ends them (whether I think it should or not)
USC loss ends them (fairly, really)

That'd put Michigan back in with ... I dunno, is the USC loss to Oregon? They might get the 4th spot in that scenario.

What about Alabama? I'd prefer that over an Ohio State team that just got crushed. Big 10 is having a down year.

This is correct.

You have to think if USC wins out a 1 loss USC gets in as the 4th team over a 1 loss tOSU that didn't even play in their conference title game. If TCU loses then it gets interesting. What is LSU wins SEC? Then its UGA, LSU, UM, and either unbeaten TCU?

Who would be Alabama's best wins in that scenario? Without looking at their schedule, I’m thinking the Mississippi schools?

I’d pick a 11-2 conference champ USC (as long as not killed by ND) over 10-2 Alabama.

I would not be in favor of that. This season, a one loss tOSU looks easily better to me than a 2 loss Bama that hasn't really beaten ANYBODY.

If you don't at least play for your conference championship, you should be ineligible. At least in a 4 team playoff.

At this moment, probably seven teams under consideration, given last week's rankings.

1. Georgia
2. Michigan
3. TCU
4. LSU, if SEC champion
5. USC, if they win out

Then the committee looks at Ohio State and Alabama. I'm not sure which way they'd go.

Every team this side of Georgia has shown some serious weakness once or twice. The appeal of Alabama is that Georgia/Alabama matchup everyone was looking forward to, right there in the semifinal.

There are currently seven majors with two losses. The committee has essentially signaled Alabama->Tennessee and two Pac Twelve teams will take another loss. Oregon is next one up after USC, but is too far back in the standings. Penn State doesn't have a good win and lost to Ohio State. Clemson will be a long way back and the UNC game should be a rout regardless.

So we'll see how the committee decides the OSU/Alabama question on Tuesday. It's a tough one. I think Alabama just because of the margin today and the appeal of seeing them play Georgia.

If you've watched Georgia much, the weaknesses aren't hard to find. What's missing thus far is that nobody has exploited those successfully.

I agree with that in a situation in which there are balanced conferences and divisions. We don't have that. I don't think it changes anything meaningful in terms of playoff if you have Ohio State and Michigan ... or Penn State for that matter ... in opposite divisions and they play in the conference championship game.

Meh, I don't care. What's balanced or not changes yearly. I liked it when teams in baseball would win 100 games and not make the playoffs. Essentially, a playoff within a playoff.

Better yet, just stop playing the conference championship games.

We have a situation in which the top three seeds could all lose their conference championships and still likely reach the playoff.

Is this a tradition or common practice for MI/OSU (or other college teams) to diss each other like this? Seems to be unnecessary and in poor taste (unless both sides have been doing it to each other in the past).

A look at the box score today illustrates why I don't consider Bama to be playoff caliber this year.

Allowing 318 yards rushing against a team that pretty much can't pass is inexcusable.

Pretty common afaik.

I mean, GT doesn't do that when they occasionally win at Georgia, they break off pieces of the beloved hedges instead but same concept.

Speculation was that they would keep him for one more year because FSU owes him 2 more $4.25M payments so he was essentially free through next year at $750K. So now he's being paid by 2 schools not to coach. What a gig.

I get it and don't think highly of this year's Alabama team. But Ohio State hasn't exactly played a murderer's row. Their only solid wins are against Penn State and a Notre Dame team that is not very good. Having watched a lot of Big 10 this year, the conference is as bad as I can ever remember it.

If today's home loss wasn't a blowout, I'd feel better. And if that Michigan team had played anyone all season, I'd feel better about it too.

Sort of feels like no one really deserves that 4 spot. At least Alabama's two losses were tight ones on the road in tough environments.

Yeah, I still don't know that this will hold (obviously rooting for it), but it's funny to compare my feelings (albeit biased) watching this vs the first half of PUR/IU. For the earlier game I was basically OMG HOW BAD ARE YOU SUCKING TO BE LOSING TO 4-7 INDIANA? Whereas here it's OMG LOOK AT HOW PLUCKY THIS 4-7 A&M TEAM IS!!

I mean, is A&M really any less awful than Indiana? They lost to a 6-6 App St.. Or do they just have HIDDEN SEC POWER?? I mean if LSU loses here this should be a laying of a pretty big f'in egg.
