I've heard Windows 10 gives you better game performance such as a higher fps, can anyone confirm this?

That link worked... thanks!

Took a few hours for my upgrade, I also had to reinstall GeForce experience, but so far everything seems fine. I still have programs to test tonight when I get home.

Boot up seems longer for me than W7 and it used 1GB more than I had on my drive previously.

I'll play around with it tonight though...

32 BIT can only use around 3GB of system memory, so if you have 4GB or more memory installed on your PC, you'll want 64 BIT.

I think for current games the performance difference with be negligible. The big difference will be once new games are written to start using the new version of DirectX.

Installed Win10 last night. Overall, I like the new OS. Not big difference in feel from Win8.1, but having the Start Menu back is great.

The upgrade was a bit eventful. I used the link in #78 to download the binaries, then ran the install. The whole process took 25-30 minutes. I did have 2 issues.

First, the Synaptics drivers weren't loaded. I eventually reinstalled the latest drivers from the website and that worked. Second, the GeForce Experience wouldn't upgrade by drivers. I had to uninstall the program (just GeForce Experience), then reinstall it from a download from the NVidia site. Once I did that, the upgrade ran fine.

Overall, the system feels a bit faster, but that could be all in my head. Let's see how it performs over the next couple of days.

Windows 10's best tricks, tips, and tweaks

Good article of tips/tricks.. especially slide #20 where you can free up a good chunk of space deleting the windows.old folder if you are never going back to the previous version of Windows.

I had to restart my comp in order to get GeForce Experience to work and download the W10 driver but that was the worst of it.

My wired beats by dre headphones still don't work. No bass or anything. I can't even install the driver I have on my windows 7 laptop that makes them work because its not compatible? Ugh typical MS bs.

Main issue I'm running into is trying to upgrade my AMD drivers. It keeps telling me that there's a new driver available but it seems like it wants to reinstall the AMD Experience or whatever instead when I click 'download.'

Other 'n that...

I used a command line trick to jump the queue on my update to Win 10 last night. Worked great but I miss 8.1 so far. I've got a Surface and the touch stuff that annoys most people was perfect for it. The new Mail client is nice though.

Yeah.. I did that and then uninstalled/reinstalled. I figure I'll give it a few weeks and I'm sure NVIDIA will come out with an updated version.

I have the W10 driver.. but GFE still gives me errors when I hit update or try to load game settings.

If this is the worst issue I see, I'm a happy camper.

I found that GeForce update kept telling me installation had failed, but once I rebooted the system, they showed the proper drivers (353.62) were working.

Which was good, because my games were running at 1 FPS just after the W10 upgrade.

Installed on my work laptop with zero issues. Whenever I get the time at the home gaming system...we'll see how it goes.

I like it so far. The only issue I've had is with my Office disapearing. It's not in the apps and not coming up in search. Maybe they want me to buy the new version?

I found the .exe file and just put it on my desktop, problem solved.

I installed it on my work machine, it's ok but I couldn't find where I could turn off auto updates. This could be a problem.

did u get the pro version? if not, there is no turning off auto updates.. apparently having win 10 force update on you while you are doing something, is a feature!

What was the point in reserving your upgrade? I've got a computer I use everyday that reserved Windows 10 months ago and still gives me the "we'll notify you when ready" status. Then I've got another computer I never used and never reserved that just gave me the option to upgrade right away after turning it on for the first time in 6 months.

While I have a problem with this, I can't help but wonder what other option is there? Eventually, no matter how much we may try, you can't be without a computer at this point and whether it's a PC or Mac, they're all taking this information. I do wholeheartedly believe it's wrong but we're all pretty much at their mercy which makes it even more scary.

Yeah, that was pretty pointless. However for the computer that says it will notify you, you can still download it. Just open Windows Updates and then click that button for "Check for updates". It will show up there. I did this on a computer that said that same message.

You can turn that off, and during the setup process, even. The only setting I've seen a 'wait what' article pop up that I don't explicitly remember being able to turn off during setup is the torrents-for-updates bit, where Windows 10 automatically "seeds" updates for other users so that MS can save on their own bandwidth and use yours instead. You can still turn that off in the settings, but I don't think you're given that opportunity at setup.

I didn't see it during setup, but yeah, you can turn it off. It's not affecting your download speeds though, just a limited portion of your upload bandwidth. So if you aren't uploading shit loads of data constantly...you are only helping your fellow users. The speed of delivery and transparency enjoyed by most everybody probably outweighs the backlash MS would get for slow updates.

Everybody will never be satisfied, but the satisfaction rates are so far enormously positive in the early days of this release. I'm damned near stunned at how they pulled this off so seamlessly and for "free". It has, no doubt, been an enormous expense to "right the MS ship".

It's a good OS. I like it.

If you by chance run an old version of the Cisco VPN Client, you are going to want to uinstall that first. Otherwise you are going to be rolling back to uninstall it and then upgrading again...

I will say they have jumped on the industry trend they had been bucking for awhile. By default they collect a TON of data on everything you do and share it with people. I imagine this is why they are working so hard to upgrade everyone. During the upgrade don't pick the express settings, pick custom.

It's unfortunate, but it's the way things are these days.

Go to that link mckerney posted, works on every pc I've tried it on.

A few more days with W10 and I still think I prefer W7. Nothing really earth shattering to me, besides it taking longer to boot my pc.

Booting/loading has been faster for me, but some of my programs have been running slower. Not sure if it's a RAM thing or if it's because I haven't changed the seeding setting yet.

I'm fine with it on items that are free. Like I understand that using Gmail means I'm going to have my e-mails scanned to show relevant ads. But Windows is a paid product.

This isn't necessarily about Windows 10, just the general trend toward "sharing" everything. I'm getting sick of it. It's actually pushed me toward using things less than more over the years.

Google trying with all their might to integrate Google+ into everything they do over the years. You couldn't use Picasa without having an account. You couldn't use Hangouts without an account. It would slide it's way into everything from commenting on YouTube videos to auto-adding contacts. You couldn't take a photo on your phone or like a video without wondering if it's going to be shared with the rest of the world.

Every game begs me to integrate with Facebook or Twitter so they can post each time I pass a level or something. I remember running a search on Bing a year ago and seeing my Facebook page somehow linked on the top right. Fitbit raids my contacts and lets people know I have one. I could go on and on.

Now I know most of these have ways to turn this crap off. But they push it so hard that I'm at a point where I'm really careful about everything I do. I'm paranoid that every picture I take will somehow be broadcast to the world. Or I'll click a Tweet this button on a site by accident and broadcast to everyone what article I'm reading because I happen to be logged in on that computer. I understand you have to build some features for the narcissists of the world but it'd be nice if I could just use some fucking software without letting the world know everything I am doing online.

Not sure if anyone else has experienced this, but it looks like upgrading does something to your eLicenses from ViaTech. I'm having to get some of mine reissued, as I don't have any free licenses to use.

Windows 10 update failed spectacularly on my Alienware. Got the black screen with just the mouse icon showing up.

Tried a couple of temp fixes, like the ctrl/alt/del fix, pc would not recognize keyboard commands.

Eventually got into the boot menu to restore previous build. It ran for four hours before I gave up on it and decided I was going to start clean. (Majority of folks saying restoring would take 15-20 minutes)

Could not get to boot menu on subsequent power downs / restarts. Would go right back to a black screen "restoring previous build of Windows."

Decide I'm going to boot windows 7 from the disk. Put the disk at the top of the boot priority. Skips it goe sback to the restoring screen.

Go back into the boot menu, remove all other options but to load from the cd drive. PC tells me there is nothing to boot.

Tear computer apart to make sure CD drive is actually connected (I've never actually used the CD drive since I've had the PC). It is connected.

Put machine back together, boot up. Goes back to "restoring previous build"

Five minutes later, Windows 7 is back and running like nothing ever happened. Didn't lose a single thing.

I'm waiting a long time before installing 10 again.

That seems like an extreme example, but that is why I am in no hurry to upgrade. I have been perfectly happy with 7 for years and see no need to fix what is not broken for me. I'll probably end up with the upgrade right before it is no longer free.

I upgraded to Win10 as quickly as I could. The first few times it was painfully slow, but after upgrading drivers and restarting a few times, it's just as quick as Win8.1. And I love how it works - esp Cortana. I enjoy that the 'apps' are windowed.

Well that's the price for having "free" software. I mean you can easy get non-sharing stuff. You just have to pay for it.

Free is only for upgrades from Win 7/8. Upgrades from XP or for new machines, you have to buy the OS.

That has nothing to do with Google.

Big fan of Cortana here too. I tell her my darkest secrets and she is great at talking dirty.

Finally got the notification on my tablet. Decided to let it install while at work. It is at 1% after 3 hours, copying files is at 5%. This may take some time.

That's weird. It took maybe 30-45 minutes on my laptop? An ultrabook with a 256 GB SSD that had maybe 25GB left.

My laptop just got the message finally - upgrade went seamlessly. It was done in under an hour for sure.
