Not to totally threadjack this thread, but I was looking for a joke car to get my son. The Geo Metro was the first that came to mind. This 1995's on ebay and has a 3-Cylinder 1 liter engine. It also gets 44/49 MPG!!!!

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1995-...QQcmdZViewItem

I saw a commercial yesterday for a 2007 hybrid that gets 40 MPG. So, in 12 years we have decided to forgo the gas-conscious, economy-size vehicles in favor of the H2, Escalade, and other vehicles that guzzle gas. I'm no tree-hugger, but maybe rising fuel costs will force enough people to bring these 44/49 MPG vehicles back.

I generally don't fall for this sort of promotion, but right now, it doesn't look so bad:

hxxp://www.firstusa.com/cgi-bin/webcgi/webserve.cgi?partner_dir_name=bp_premium

Chase and BP are offering a Visa card, which appears to offer some good stuff:

Quote:
1. Offer expires 8/31/06. Earn a total of $75 in BP Gift Cards good for gas or other purchases at any BP location: earn a $40 BP Gift Card when you make your first purchase within 3 months of account opening; earn an additional $35 BP Gift Card when you spend at least $1,000 in everyday purchases within 3 months of account opening. If you qualify, BP Gift Cards will be sent to you 6 to 8 weeks after your eligible purchases appear on your billing statement. See back of BP Gift Card for terms of use.

2. Your earning percentages are doubled during the first two billing cycles after your account is opened. This offer is valid only for first time BP Rewards Visa cardmembers. Existing BP Rewards Visa cardmembers are not eligible. If your account is not open for at least 6 months, BP and Chase reserve the right to deduct the Double Rewards from your BP Rewards Program account.

3. You will earn a 5% rebate on every $1.00 of net purchases made at participating BP locations. You will earn a 2% rebate on every $1.00 of net purchases made at retail establishments that classify their merchant location for Visa/MasterCard as Dining (excluding retail establishments classified as Fast Food Restaurants), Airline, Auto Rental, or Lodging and a 1% rebate on all other net purchases (excluding purchases made at merchants where non-BP or non-Amoco fuel is sold. These purchases do not earn rebates.) Net purchases means purchases of goods and services made by you or any authorized user on your account minus any returns or refunds. You do not earn rebates on balance transfers, cash advances, finance charges, unauthorized or fraudulent charges, or fees of any kind, including fees for products that protect or insure the balances of your account.

We're considering getting one of these, having its limit set way down to something like $200, and using it as a gasoline card only. For a couple of months, 10% off on gas is pretty substantial, and 5% off is still more than $2 a tank. The nearby BP happens to be the cheapset gas within easy distance of us, anyway. *shurg*

I got an ad for this because I have a Chase Credit Card.

Unfortunately for me, BP is just not conveniently located, so it holds much less value.

Make sure there isn't a "maximum benefit" clause in the contract, such as you can only get a rebate of $200/year or whatnot. Otherwise, cool.

At the moment, the best rebate we have for gas purchases is 1% -- so it would be pretty hard for this not to exceed that, even if it eventually gets capped. But thanks for the tip, I will read the fine print.

Was I the only one expecting a Maximum Football joke? I thought it was an FOFC rule that you can't use the word maximum without one.

So we were around $3.09 here for a couple of weeks, until about 2-3 weeks ago, when the price started falling steadily. Today, the lowest price I saw on the way to work was $2.51. Has everyone's gas fallen that far that fast?

Odd thing about the gas prices around here (since I'm new to the area). Prices go up $.25-.30 overnight. There is no gradual increase - the night before you'll see $2.75, and the next morning you'll see $3.05. I've never experienced anything like it.

I just filled my car up with Gas yesterday for something like $2.85/gallon. I wonder what the price of Gas is today. I'm going to be pissed if Gas is down to something like $2.60/gallon, even though my car only takes about 8 or 9 gallons of Gas per tank.

I'm not seeing the dramatic decrease in one night like KSyrup, but I have seen a gradual fall to now where the cheap stations are around 2.75.

$2.89 in Wyoming and more for me, since my car only takes 87 octane or higher. ($3.01 or $2.98 with my Albertsons card.)

It's over $3.00 in Colorado when I'm there, so I always fill up so I have enough to get there and back without having to get more gas. Ugh.

In the northern Chicago suburbs we've gone from the $3.50s for regular to the $3.20s in a couple of weeks. The State Legislature is talking about suspending the state tax on gas for a while, but for those of us in Cook County (with its serious budget issues), I wouldn't be surprised to see the County tas on gas go up (assuming there is one, which I'm sure there is).

Barring another Katrina-like storm, it definitely appears as if gas will be headed down toward $2 between now and Thanksgiving. We're now in the high $2.30s. I had pretty much given up on ever seeing gas that low again, and it'll probably continue to drop even further.

Not sure what's going on in Idaho. Typically, we're in the top 5 states in terms of cheapest gas, but in the last two weeks, prices haven't dropped a cent. As a result, Idaho's gas is now well above the national average.

I would guess gas hasn't gone down in the Northwest because most of it in that area comes from Alaska, which would make the impact of that shutdown more important. Just a theory though.

Saw gas for 2.69 here this morning.
