I don't care if you talk like that. I'm not wounded every time someone says something over the top and I understand that sometimes people make jokes that rely on a broad brush view.

And you've spent years saying things like "all liberals do/think this..." I only point it out all the time because you are so vociferous when anyone says anything about conservatives.

I come from left of center & I believe we should make it illegal for pork to be added to ANY bill. Why should funding for septic tanks in Wyoming (or whatever crap that gets added) be a part of the rebuilding of West, Texas?

Actually, in this case the fertilizer company should be liable for any and all expenses. This was not a natural disaster. It appears to be negligence. If I pack my basement with dynamite and accidentally leave a candle burning when I leave home you can be damn sure I would be liable. Instead it's a company so the taxpayers will have to pay.

Exactly. The state of Texas knew the plant had more than 400 pounds of ammonium nitrate, the DHS didn't. I do agree that the state of Texas should do inspections more than once every 26 years, but I'm not sure how Texas doing more inspections would help alert the Feds to the amount of ammonium the plant had. Maybe (part of) the outrage that will be spent trying to argue for more inspections should be spent asking that the 2 government levels share that column in an excel spreadsheet.

I think this is the salient point. Apparently the state is never responsible for reporting a potential oversight/negligence case? I can't imagine there's a threshold that 270 tons didn't meet.

As someone who has worked on the back end of things before and has a decent grasp of overhead, I know there's a limit at some point. But shouldn't multiple redundancies be an acceptable practice when it comes to hazardous materials?

As bad as the explosion was, it could have been much, much worse.

This Is Exactly How Massive the Texas Fertilizer Explosion Was - Yahoo! News

Quote:
An estimated 28 to 34 tons of ammonium nitrate exploded, with the force of 15,000 to 20,000 pounds of TNT. An additional 20 to 30 tons in the building didn't go off, nor did 100 tons in a nearby railcar.

After the investigation, the root cause was determined to be arson that caused the explosion.
