A few observations from the grid.
Eight of the nine columns have three common letters--potentially forming "tic tac toes" with one another. Two columns have four common letters--column 5 (letter c) and column 9 (letter e). Eight of the nine letters in touchtone are common to at least two other words, meaning that Touchtone could be the middle of our tic tac toe grid. Just thinking out loud here. |

No thanks. Although, has anyone noticed that zit cream has nine letters? Perhaps that is the missing clue! :-P
I was going to post this thought earlier, but I was worried about it ending up on the top of Page 3. |

I was trying to come up with some sort of pattern, and decided to try to make an order in which the first two have the first letter in common, second and third have the second letter in common, etc...I got stuck at the end, but I haven't tried too many different combinations. Here's what I've got:
Code:

The letters with 3 (or 4) are, in order by column, are T, O/E, U, H, C, O, N, E. Rearranged these can spell Touch One. |

Tic tac toe and touchtone...perhaps reordering the grid along these lines...or making several smaller grids...is a step in the right direction? There are 8 ways to make a winning line in tic tac toe.

Okay, it looks like another nudge might be in order. So, I'll help out... hopefully this doesn't make it a giveaway from here.

If you arrange the answers to the first part in a touchtone pattern (answers in a 3 x 3 square) you get:
Code:
Then you take out the 1st and last clue, because they were really only used to get us to make this grid. You then have: Code:
As you know, each of the touchtone keys represented have letters on them (1 = ABC, 2=DEF, etc). If we remove the letters that are on their respective key, we get: Code:
What does that give us? Look again... Code:
The answer is obvious...we're looking for a pen that is made out of bark and writes in neon colors. |

I think I have wrapped up my hint-giving for this puzzle. I feel that I have given you ample direction, and that you have more than enough input from me to wrap this up. In fact, I've even offered a "back door" clue which would allow someone to get the final answer without even technically solving the puzzle itself... but that's just me being devious.
Unfortunately, you all seem to have moved past the relatively simple intended path to solving the puzzle, and have been looking for things that are much, much more complex. Yes, this one was tough - but with the work you've already done and the many hints and nudges you've received, I think you ought to be able to hone in on the rest. Good luck. |

ok, here's my desperate grasp...
the sound of music tells me there's numeric clues in many of the words...but, whether this is intentional or accidental, or, what to do with those numbers is beyond me TI (Tictactoe) - 7th note of the major scale LA (Pensacola) - 6th note of the major scale RE (RebelYell) - 2nd note of the major scale geraldine (no clue) SO or RE (threesons) - 5th or 2nd note of the scale (OR the number 3) gillespie (no clue, other than PI). MI (Microchip) - 3rd note of the major scale fourhclub (no clue) - maybe 4? SO (Southpark) - 5th note touchtone - again, maybe 1?

The odds against ten words listed sharing at least two letters in the same position with the following word accidentally are staggering.
So I'd continue on that front. These words were chosen for the similarities. Figuring out how to arrange a keypad based on that knowledge is a complete mystery. I'm sure it's obvious, but I'm not getting it. Best of luck. |

Good work, Franklin, Dodger. Now we know the solution, we need to figure out how we got there.
Solecismic came about one night when I was choosing an AOL screen ID back in '95. I was joining in a literary trivia group, and puns were in vogue for user names. So a grammar error about the word solecism seemed funny at the time. Later, when I needed a company name, I was advised to use a made-up word. Remind me never to visit hyperdictionary - never even heard of that version. |

Now, going back to my incorrect grid, here's what I see...
Code:
Note that the capitalized letter spell out "Churchill". And they are all letters in that group outlined earlier - the adjacent word also has the same letter in the same position. However, why those letters and not the other 10 in that group? And how do you come up with the proper ordering for the words so that Churchill jumps out at you? |

When I said above that you're making things too complicated for yourselves - this is a fine example. The above could be described as "putting the words into 3x3 grids, and then putting those grids into another grid." You're doing more than you have to here. Sorry about the extra nudging... For what it's worth... there's an error in the 3x3 gridded "PENSACOLA" that you might want to fix as you work through this. I just noticed it myself ... it currently spells out "PEN SAC COL" by mistake.

For some reason I am reminded of those little puzzles where you have to convert one word to another by changing just one letter per step, for example (very simplistic):
bake make male I can't seem to link more than a few of these 3 letter combos together in any 1 sequence though.

I apologize if from where you stand my clues and hints have been of little help. It's a fine line between a gentle nudge in the right direction, and just opening the curtain completely. I fear, however, that in my efforts to avoid giving the whole puzzle away, I have just added to the puzzlers' agony.
So, there are some bigger hints. There's the grid. There's the clue that I already gave that isn't getting the attention it deserved. Go get it. |
