Mission briefing 12/21/1943 Osnabruck Aircraft Factory
High Command is very pleased with our group so far. we have had excellent results with very little casualties. Lets continue to impress them with these excellent results. Our next target is an aircraft factory in the west of germany near the ocean. It is 1093 miles round trip to our target. We believe that Osnabruck is doing final assembly of the stuka 88b bomber. Hitting this target will definately slow the replacements of these aircraft. we leave at 7:30am tomorrow morning. Golden Bomber - Leader Cloudsplitter Flying Plantain Rust Bucket Mighty Madness Wind dancer

12/22/1943 Osnabruck Aircraft Factory Mission 8 All Hell Breaks loose.
We start off with another routine flight into germany soil. We meet stiff resistance as we head into germany towards the target. We are assualted by 8 enemy fighters including 4 109's. and some 190's. Out of nowhere a 109 drops down out of the sky and aims for Rustbucket. He hits the number 2 engine, which immediatly catches on fire. Nearly the whole crew panics, but the pilot keeps his cool and manages to get things under control. They fall out of formation and drop their payload, then turn back towards england. The five remaining bombers continue to press on and mange to down 6 of the 8 craft. Cloudsplitter bags 2, Flying plantain, Mighty Madness and the Golden Bomber all grab one more. We are fast approaching the bomb site, and we are taking some heavy flak from the germans. We start the bomb run when the lead bomber calls out over the radio that he cant find the target. Things are looking very bad as the crews are not sure they can keep the planes together. They regroup some distance from the target and make another run through heavy flak. This time its a success as they drop their bombs Totally destroying the site and hitting many of the buildings. We limp back towards england and luckily no-one crashes. We get ready to land, and everything goes fine until windancer is set to land. her landing gear is stuck, however the manual control works fine, and she sets down safely. Definately our most dangerous mission so far. I thought that we would definately loose a plane today. I guess that luck was on our side.

12/24/43 Bremen FockeWulf Factory Mission 9
Our next target is the FW 190 plant. This plant produces the majority of the FW 190 planes. Taking this plant offline will severly hamper the germans ability to produce new 190's Expect pretty heavy resistance. Flying this mission tomorrow will be TommyKnocker Four Horsemen Hitler Sucks Flying Crawfish Stormbringer Crawling Chaos

12/25/43 Bremen fockeWulf Factory 1118 miles.
This is a christmas day mission, And we really just hope that everyone can make it back alive. We quickly make it over the channel and into germany without a hitch. We meet some light resistance as we fly towards the target. It seems as though we may have done some damage to the germans, as only one group of enemy aircraft even bothers to show up. Or maybe they are just all celebrating x-mas. 3 of the planes wander into our sights, and our shot down. The other plan is taken down by a p-47. Flying Horsemen, Hitler Sucks, and Stormbringer all get 1 kill apiece. We hit some heavy flak over the target, and our planes really take a beating. We drop our bombs successfully. Its a rough ride back to england as the planes limp home. We did high damage to the factory, however we only hit 1 of the 3 large assembly buildings. We will definately be going back at a later time to wipe them off the map.

12/28/43 The Quiet Ride
This mission is a total opposite of the previous 9 Missions. Our fighters do a very good job protecting us, and we fail to see any enemy aircraft during the whole flight. We reach the target and are able to succefully bomb the target resulting in high damage. Some of our planes are a bit bruised due to flak, but they all hold together as we fly back to england.

12/30/43 Kassel AeroIndustry Factory. Mission 11
This is a medium sized plant that produces parts mainly for the 109 fighter. This will not stop the flow of new planes, but will slow down production, and replacement parts. This should be a good mission. Flying tomorrow is Flying Crawfish TommyKnocker Hitler Sucks Four Horsemen Stormbringer Crawling Chaos We also recieved a letter from high command. They are very happy with our success so far, and will be sending some top brass to tour our facility in hopes of learning are success. Lets show them that the first 10 missions we not a fluke.

12/31/43 Trouble brews on New Years Eve
This mission starts off like all of the rest, we head towards france on our way towards the target. We reach the coast of france, and immediatly we are targeted by 8 109's They hit us hard and heavy. Hitler sucks crew is stunned as a cannon fire rips through there number 3 engine. Black smoke pours out as the pilot trys to get everything under control. The immediatly drop their bombs to save weight, and prepare to turn back asap. We eventually take out the 8 fighters. Flying horsemen and Tommyknocker both score one kill. Stormbringer bags 6. Hitler sucks heads back for england on 3 engines. Seconds later we watch in horror as the Four Horsemen suddenly starts to lose altitude at an alarming rate, they vanish from sight and that is the last we see of them. We continue on towards our target and near the bomb run. 4 more enemy planes assualt our depleted numbers. 2 of them are taken out by Stormbringer. The other 2 are damaged and we dont see them anymore. We drop our bombs and head back to base, with the loss of Four Horsemen. We land our planes, and head to the de-briefing. It is then to our sursprise that we learn the fate of the FH. both the pilot and co-pilot were shot and unable to continue flying the plane. One of the gunners came up and took over the plane, however he barely knew how to fly a plane himself. He was able to get back over english soil, and then 3 of his engines acted up. Since he was flying without a co-pilot he had no idea of how to adust the engines for the altitude. He hastily dropped the landing gear, and luckily was able to sit the plane down in a wheat field 30 miles or so from the base. The two wounded men were rushed to the hospital were they underwent surgery. both are expected to return in a few days.

1/3/1943
Its a cloudy day as we take to the skies. We see very little activity as fas as enemy aircraft. It isnt until we reach the bombsite that things go crazy. 4 190's come up to greet us, and they tear into us like a cat tearing into a dog. We finally subdue the emeny. Cloudsplitter bags 2, and mighty madness and wind dancer both take another one down. Windancer has some bad luck as one of their crew is hurt fairly bad by a flak shell. We hope he can make it back to england and recieve medical attention. We line up on our target and its bombs away. We hit the mark and totally destory the site. Our bombers are fairly beat up from the flak, but are still flyable. WE head back to england soil once more and the safety of our barracks. thompson from winddancers is rushed into surgery. A piece of flak was deeply imbedded in his leg. He should recover however, and it looks like we will miss a few weeks. I will post the stats and the next missions later this evening.

Okay, i am going to make a few changes with the next set of missions. For starters, I will no longer order a plan to turn back if it can no longer keep in formation. I will drop the bombs, and let it fly the mission out. I think this is more realistic then if I turned the plane around. Also, it should allow for more downed aircraft. There seems to be a bug in the game. If you send a plane back it doesnt fly the whole way back but somehow immediately lands. This should rectify this problem.
Also, I will turn the range of our guns down another 50 yards. This should make for more interesting battles in the sky. Basically this will allow the enemy to get closer before being shot down, and we should see more problems arise. Flak is already at the highest level, so there isnt much i can do there. However I think that only berlin has the worst flak so not much i can do there short of editing some of the game files. I am also going to reassign the two crews. One flight group will have all of the lowest number of planes shot down, the other will have the highest. This should allow for some of you guys to actually get some kills. I cant for the life of me figure out if there is any ryhme or reason too who gets the most kills, although it still looks like the guys in the back of the formation score more, I cant be sure. ALso I dont believe we will end anytime soon. There are plenty of other target to attack. And most of the places we have bombed are still on the map, so they will warrant another round of attacks. I personally think the damage assesment the cpu provides is on the high side, but there is nothing I can do short of assigning my own ratings to the post mission recon. There are still 11 targets that are definately directly involved with the luftwaffe, and another 12 sites that are indirectly involved. There are also approximately 28 other industrial and steel factories, not too mention the 15 or so oil sites. So we still have many things to bomb.

1/6/44 SKF INstrument Factory CLose Calls
This promises to be an interesting mission, since none of the planes have many kills.Someone will definately be getting some kills today We fly into france today, and we our hit by some heavy resistance 8 109's drop into our lap. Mighty Madness takes to the task and shoots down 5 of them. Wind Dancer and Crawling Chaos also bags one. Crawling chaos finally erases that big 0 and grabs a kill. Rustbucket continues their problems, with a fire in engine in number 3. They get it under control and are able to keep up. We fly onto the target, but our gunner is unable to see the target so we have to fly around again. We run into another 4 109's and proceed to take them out of the sky. Mighty madness bags another 3, and our escorts down one more. We run into some heavy flak as we drop our bombs. We pull out away from the flak zone. Flying Crawfish has to feather their number 1 engine. Trouble is brewing on their plane as both the pilot and co-pilot are wounded slightly. The are able to keep flying, and we have no further problems during this mission.

1/9/1944 Regensburg Messerschmitt Factory Taking it too the enemy
All is quiet as we fly over the channel and enter france. Too quiet if ya ask me. We head towards the first of 2 flak zones we must cross. Suddenly 8 109's dive towards our flight group raking us with a spray of machine gun and cannon fire. We fight back bravely, Cloudsplitter downs one plane, and Hitler sucks downs t hree. Tommyknockers and Golden bomer both nab 2. We press on and reach the first flak zone. WE enter into some heavy flak when we are sieged by another 4 109's. Tommyknockers bags 2 more and Golden bomber and Flying horsemen both have 1 kill. We fly quietly towards the target and everything is silent again. We reach the target and start the bomb run. The germans must be expecting us, as another 4 109's attack. This time they hit the number 3 engine on Stormbringer. They manage to stay in formation long enough as we drop our bombs. we turn back toward england, as we continue to fend off the 109's. Tommyknockers has one more kill, and golden bomber shoots down the other 3. We fly towards england with just one more flak zone to pass through. Its a short zone, however the Pilot of TommyKnockers is hit by a piece of shrapnel and passes out. The Co-pilot takes over, and is able to fly the plane back safely. We return home without further incident.

This mission starts out like every other mission. We fly out over the channel and into frace on our way towards the target. Midway to the first flak zone we run into some elite fighter pilots. They score a direct hit of The Flying Crawfish's #4 engine. It continues to run but black smoke pours out of it. I order them to drop their bombs and try to keep up. THe Flying PLantain takes a direct hit too the number 4 engine and it stops running. They are also forced to drop bombs and keep up. We knock 7 planes out of the sky, and press on towards the target. We enter into some flak but safely make it out without too much damage. Another group of fighters press into our midsts but we are successfully able to fend them off and down all four. Only 4 of the six planes drop bombs on the target, and it looks like a direct hit.(stupid ai and its low assesment, I destroyed all 4 of the main buildings, which should have been more. Oh well) We turn towards england and after another run through a flak zone we land safely without incident.

A bug in the game is really the only thing that kept one of you from dying. It seems that somehow whenever a plane is going down due to both the pilot and co-pilot being injured, and you switch to that plane, then the plane immediately corrects itself and rejoins the formation. the downside is that this should not happen. For starters, its not very realistic how people suddenly without warning become incapacitated, even when they are not injured permanently. If I got shot in the leg my crew would know about it, unless I just passed out. Im still trying to come up with a solution to this problem, but I only see two anwsers. one would be to not select the plane and let it crash, however I should give the order to bail out. The other would be to jump in the plane and have someone take over flying, however this is unrealistic as well, since the plane will level out once i switch too it. Your input here would be most helpful as to what I should do.

This factory is located deep inside germany, nearly as far as the last target but more northerly. This is a big factory folks, and can easily take on any job that the luftwaffe needs. We suspect that with the recent attacks on several key factories that the luftwaffe is in the process of moving its FW 190 construction to this facility. Recon shows a few dozen FW 190's sitting around the plant. Hopefully this will further disorganize the Luftwaffe. We should see a significant decrease in overall fighter production as we have heavily damaged a large number of the factories that build fighters and bombers. Flying will be Tommyknockers Cloudsplitter Stormbringer Hitler Sucks Golden Bomber Flying Horsemen

The luftwaffe is ready for us as we cross over into germany. We are besieged by 109's After we finish shooting them down, 4 190's amd 4 109's join into the fray. We wound afew planes, and they limp back home. Stormbringer has her number 1 engine hit, and it starts to pour black smoke as they fall behind. They drop their payload and try to keep up with us. We cross over the first flak zone. Lucky for us, their aim seems a bit off. None of the planes are severly damaged as we reach the other side. We press on to the target, when another 4 109's attack our position. with help from our fighter escort we take care of them. We finally reach our target, but we have a tough time dropping the bombs, and only hit 3 buildings. We take some more flak as we head back to england. The rest of the flight is quiet, and we land safely.

Today we will attack the gotha aircraft factory again. We did a terrible job, and High command has told us that this is a very important target. We are not sure, but we suspect that a secret fighter project might be happening here. So we go back in hopes of further damaging this place.
On another note, I really wish they would have made another patch for this game. It could really use some tweaking to the AI as far as the germans are concerned, and several other options. I wish that the german flights were more historically acurate. In the real war, the fighters would wait to engage the bomber groups after the escort had left, before the advent of the mustang. By the time that D-day rolls around, the mustang is flying the majority of escort misssions, whereas the p-38 lightning is more focused on strafing airfields and helping infantry. German fighters also hit the planes as the bombers were flying towards the target and also away from the target. It would be more realistic if the game modeled this. also right now should be when the luftwaffe puts up its stiffest resistance. The majority of pilots are experienced fighters, unlike near the end of the war where very few of them were adequately trained.

I have talked about bomb damage assesment in the past, about how inaccurate it was. Well I think this may not be a bug, but is pretty historical. Destroying a building that was building aircraft didnt mean that you actually destroyed that building's capability to produce aircraft. The building has nothing to do with it. In all actuallity the building isnt even needed. What is important is all that heavy manufacturing equipment. So I think that is how the game makes up for it. Now in real life, early in the war they had not learned this lesson, and it cost many men their lives.

1/18/1944 The Calm before the storm Gotha Aircraft Factory
This mission is pretty quiet. We see most of our fighting right as we cross into france. we are attacked by 8 109's to begin with. And the action is fast and furious with Flying Crawfish racking up the kills. We dispatch the 8 just as another 4 fly up to greet us. We take relatively little damage. We fly through one flak zone on route towards the target. Everyone escapes pretty handily and we bomb the target. WE clean up here, and would have gotten a TD but we only managed to damage the last big building. However we destroyed 80% of the remaining buildings. We fly back to england safely.

1/21/1944 The Storm Rages On
The proves to be our toughest mission yet. Everything is quiet as we fly over the channel. Once we are inside germany, we are besieged by enemy planes. 8 of them strafe us over and over. The fighting is intense but we manage to subdue them. In the process, CloudSplitter is forced to drop their load early. There bomb bay doors are shot all up, so they are forced to manually open and close them. They lose their number 4 engine, but without the bombs, they manage to keep up. Another 8 planes try to knock us out of the sky. We fight them off, and manage to down some of them. Hitler Sucks continues their run of bad luck. Their number 4 engine starts to pour black smoke, and they drop out of formation. They quickly drop their bombs, and rejoin. We reach the target and 4 of the 6 planes drop bombs on it. It is good enough, and we score a Total Destruction of the site. We head back towards england and still have 1 more flak zone to cross through. We are pounded with flak, and Hitler sucks loses the number 3 engine. TommyKnocker also takes damage and the number 3 engine flames out. As we reach the end of the flak, we watch as golden bomber starts to lose altitude. They radio the flight leader, and let them know their plane's control surfaces are all shot up. They can no longer keep the plane level, without burning their engines up in a few minutes. They drop out of sight, and they radio us once more 30 seconds later. They are forced to bail out of the plane in enemy territory. and their plane crashes into the ground. Fortunately, all of the men survive. Unfortunately, all ten men are captured. Our group of beat up planes manage to make it back to england without any further losses. That was really a tough one guys. Even on manual flight, I was unable to keep it level. I could keep it level if I cranked the engines all the way up, however it caused black smoke to pour out of all 4. WE were way too deep inside germany to fly like that for more than 5 or 10 minutes. I gave the order to bail out since their were no other options. It was really only a matter of time before we lost a plane. But it still a bit hard, especially when you have grown pretty attached to a plane.

Look for things to get a bit tougher. We are slowly moving deeper into germany. we only have 8 more targets that directly produce Aircraft parts. then we have a whole lot of targets that are important, but not as important. Also, we will try to stay in line with history a bit, and as d-day gets nearer, our focus will shift, much like the focus shifted in the real war.
