Well, in his first three appearances he faced 9 batters over the three innings and struck out 8 of them. Was hitting mid to upper 90s like you said. Got hit last night which led to the long inning. Came out today with no velocity, shocking no one.

Pablo Sandoval on the DL despite barely playing yet. The injury is that he's fat and terrible. It'll be fun to see how all this plays out.

I didn't follow the off season at all, but it's looking like the Phils got a couple of quality, young starters in the Giles & Hamels deals. So glad Amaro is gone.

Coming into the game, Flowers had three hits for the season (13 ABs). He has three tonight.
Coming in, Francouer had ONE hit all season (12 ABs) and 0 RBI. He has 2 & 2 tonight.

The thing I find most unusual about strikeouts is how many 300 strikeout years from pitchers we had when strikeouts werent as common while now we rarely see them when strikeouts are at an all time high. I realize pitchers dont pitch as many innings as previously but I would still think a few would sneak up there occasionally.

yeah its all about innings pitched. The top guys will still get 10-11+ K's per 9 - but there's a big difference between 220 IPs vs. 260 IPs. and FWIW, Kershaw had 300 K's last year.

They were talking the other day about how ridiculous the amount of innings worked by starters was in the 1970s. They mentioned Dennis Leonard as an example during his prime. I think they said he averaged 260-270 IP over a five year span. No wonder he broke down so quickly at the end.

First test passed against the Tigers. Picked up 2 out of 3 games and could have easily won the one that the Royals lost.

Two best records in the AL match up tonight at the K. Could be a rough one though as Chris Young takes the mound. Royals are 0-3 when he starts and 10-2 when someone else starts. He needs a good start tonight or the Royals might bring a new arm into the rotation.

A few things:

1 - If you haven't had the chance to catch it, watch the throw Puig made last night in Colorado. It reminds me of the one Jose Guillen made years earlier. It was simply jaw dropping.

2 - I had never read about Arrieta's history before. I guess he never succeeded with the Orioles because they wouldn't let him throw the cutter. They had/have evidence that use of the cutter reduces fastball veleocity down the road. Well, ummm, ooops.

3 - A very nice start from Jonathan Gray last night. Yeah, he gave up 5 runs in 5 innings (some of which can be attributed to Coors, some was poor location), but he struck out 10 and looked like he knew what the hell he was doing out there.

That Puig play is a dead ringer for Bo's legendary throw that got Harold Reynolds. Both were high enough to bring rain and both hit their mark on the fly.

I still rate the Guillermo one as the best I have ever seen.

1 - the throw was farther than the one Puig made.

2 - Guillen got turned all the way around while Puig was able to simply run forward after the ball hit.

3 - Perez is much faster than Story

Bit that Puig throw was special. Really really special

With the nice weather and my wife out of town, we may hit the Braves game tomorrow. At least we may see one good team. I wish the Jackets were in town as it is monumentally cheaper. Nosebleeds cost $18 (at least in the shade on the 3rd base side). I went to ticketmaster and there seem to be entire sections open, but at $40-50 a pop with a 7 and 2.5 year old, it's hardly worth it (adding in another $20 for parking).

I think the thing that stands out for puig was where the ball ended up. Guillermo had more power and was a laser but it was higher then the bag. Bo's throw was on a tag up and the runner didn't have a head of steam.

Saw the YouTube just now of Bo nailing Reynolds at the plate. Just amazing that the homer Seattle announcers are obsessing over umps being out of position ("Royals got a break") instead of marveling at the throw ... or at least recognizing that the "OUT!" call was 100% correct.
