I hope somebody will do the honor of creating the Civ5 "Alright boyz..." thread. I had the pleasure of doing the Civ4 one and I look forward to seeing some of your first impressions. I hope we can also get Blacky out of retirement to post his thoughts.

Looks like my Vid card is a little on the low end for it but it'll still run it.

My computer processor is off by .2
That shouldn't be a problem, right? Might not run the smoothest but the damn thing should run correct? |

Civ 4 is the best game I've ever played.
Civ 5 looks better. I can't wait. |

I've been long overdue for an upgrade to my RAM, CPU and Graphics Card, so this provided a good excuse (only my graphics card needed upgrading, but RAM and CPU were at the minimum).

It may not be the speed that bites you in the ass as much as whether or not it's a multi-core. That's my problem. My current processor is fast enough, but it's only a single core. |

If anyone wants to read the PDF manual before the game comes out, here it is: Civ 5 manual
I'm going to miss having a large printed manual but the developers have said they'll update the PDF file over time as patches change aspects of the game, that's pretty cool at least. Last edited by Big Fo : 09-18-2010 at 10:31 AM. |

Awesome. I didn't know they were gonna release the manual early, so when I came across a copy of the strategy guide today, I went ahead and picked that up for some early reading. Be interesting to see how much overlap there is between the PDF and the guide and how much unique information each one has. |

I haven't done much reading about this because I was going to wait a while to get it. No chance of that happening though.
Does anyone know anything about the MP?

2 days and 18 hours... damn it.
The changes this year I think have the potential to make this one as revolutionary as Civ 2 was at the time. Military production actually matters and you are really going to have to think beyond "get this unit that this other Civ doesn't have yet and just mass produce the shit out of it". I've always hated playing conquest style but this year seems like a whole new way to win. |

I had thought about waiting for a boxed version but decided on Direct2Drive once I saw you could get a $5 discount by entering a promo code and that they will be giving the first DLC (extra Civ and a scenario) for free. But the game downloads through Steam anyway even if buying from D2D.

Be careful with the Strategy Guide, it has a number of errors, omissions and typos.
I'm ok with the system requirements despite my PC being built about 4 years ago. Coincidently, the minimum graphics card is exactly the one that I put in. But I will be building my new PC later this year. |

Something to remember is that the game isn't very forgiving after release in regards to specs. Usually, the development team's first patch addresses some fixes to speed up the game and make it a bit more forgiving once they find out the sticking points on the various setups. Surprised the reviewer didn't mention that, though he may not be a Civ regular. |

Apparently, it was in comparison to the Firaxis walkthrough and interviews, as well as validated by the manual. But you're right, some have been saying that the manual itself may have some errors (certainly contradictions) since it was based on an earlier build. With the manual beying electronic-only, they can easily update it after release. |

There have been some things about Civ5 that made me uneasy (and still does). I keep thinking about Civ3 and the debacle that was (initially) and wondered if I'll just keep playing Civ4. But after playing my latest Civ4 game, this time using Rise of Empires 3.5, it dissolved into yet another Prince RTS game. I need something different and a new way of playing civ.

Somehow having the game already on my hard drive makes the waiting seem longer. I want to go into a cryogenic chamber until Tuesday, Eric Cartman style.
I've been playing some Civ IV: BTS but it's not satisfying the itch. |

While I understand there can be issues with it, Steam has pretty much single-handedly revived PC gaming for me. I love it.

+2 The latest thing I bought from Steam was Torchlight, and that game is amazingly addictive in a Diablo way.

Glad you got it figured out. I'm almost at a point where I don't want to play a game unless it's on Steam.

Steam doesn't do anything for me. While I understand the need for it (esp. for registration), I have no interest in a "social" gaming experience, nor will allow anything to be updated automatically, and will play with it off-line. Pay-as-you-go DLC is a terrible idea compared to a released expansion pack. |

Just buy wherever it's cheapest, it's a Steamworks game which means if you buy a retail box you'll have to add it to your Steam account when you install it anyway. |

Still makes accessing and purchasing and browsing easier than brick & mortar stores. I have no interest in a social gaming experience either - i never play online with it or anything. And it's simple to play offline and have things not update automatically (although that's a huge timesaver...no different than PS games updating automatically). In the end it's a far better form of copy-protection than installing some invasive proprietary software on your system from each game publisher that wrecks your system. |
