Well it might be a little too early to take him here I guess, but I do like the looks of A.J. Hitchcock. H ehas that breakout look. I wonder if he would make it to our next pick.

Dola,

Also Davidson might not be a bad pick here either. With Wellman and Harden that would sure up our LB's for a long itme.

I will again toss out the strategy we used last year - trade this pick to move up in next year's draft. If we don't like the end of round one, maybe we try to get into an earlier spot next year.

The only offensive player who looks at all worth considering here wouuld be WR Byron Rodgers, but with our investment in the passing game already, I just don't see it working for us.

Quick that is a pretty good idea, no one here really looks like a solid pick to me...but...I do like the looks of DE AJ Hitchcock, and I don't know if he would last to our next pick...should we consider just trading down to around maybe # 12 in round 2? and picking up an extra 4th round pick?

I won't be able to comment until later tonight specifically.. but i know when I looked at the players no RB seemed like a 1st round pick, and we are pretty set at WR right now.. I think LB fills a bigger need for us..

Okay, with no strong consensus on where to go here, we swing a deal. Ocean City takes this pick, and we also send then our 3rd and 5th picks next year, in exchange for their first pick next year.

Code:
31. Ocean City - Webster, Preston, RB, Georgia 32. Mazatlan - Hatcher, Rodney, T, Wisconsin 33. Puget Sound - Peelle, Scott, T, Kentucky 34. Manhattan - Davidson, Marc, ILB, Southern California 35. Death Valley - Perez, Shaun, T, Boston College 36. Lake Erie - Ratte, Freddie, T, Indiana 37. Champaign - Price, Trent, RB, UCLA 38. Fort Knox - Lumpkin, Bucky, DE, North Carolina State 39. Niagara Falls - Rodgers, Byron, WR, Georgia Tech 40. Napa Valley - Halela, Corwin, DE, Louisiana State 41. Providence - Nussmeier, Tyrone, RB, UCLA 42. Ocean City - Brandon, Keith, G, Arizona

With the "players we like" rapidly dropping off the board and our DE now at the top of that position's list, I decide to follow Doug's instincts. We trade up in round two to get Key West's pick at 2(11), to get the DE we like. It costs us our fourth round pick, which seems reasonable enough:

Code:
43. Little Rock - Hitchcock, A.J., DE, Texas Tech 44. Tijuana - Hutchins, Jimmie, T, Nebraska 45. Thunder Bay - Logan, Cornelius, DE, Pittsburgh 46. Memphis - Doyle, Walter, ILB, North Texas 47. Pensacola - Ramsey, Junior, T, Oregon 48. Key West - Schulz, Bo, QB, Maryland 49. Athens - Thornton, Chester, CB, Wake Forest 50. Fort Wayne - Krcik, Ty, QB, Virginia Tech 51. Tulsa - Luck, Antoine, DT, Clemson 52. Louisville - Stokley, Andrew, OLB, San Jose State 53. Kitty Hawk - Ward, Donovan, T, Notre Dame 54. Thunder Bay - Farley, Bob, DT, Washington State 55. Bermuda - Samuels, Johnnie, DE, Texas A&M 56. Hawk Mountain - Colley, Kenny, DE, Notre Dame 57. Nashua - Terrell, Brenden, OLB, Auburn 58. Wheeling - Taylor, Justin, S, Mississippi 59. Texarkana - St. Cyr, Marco, CB, Cal. - Poly SLO 60. Cheyenne - Douglas, Bennie, CB, Duke 61. Sacramento - Griffin, Joel, ILB, Southern California 62. Sault Ste. Marie - Wiggins, Tyrell, DT, Michigan 63. Key West - Bell, Russell, ILB, East Stroudsburg 64. Mazatlan - Hewitt, Keith, ILB, McNeese State 65. Puget Sound - Tucker, Preston, WR, Mississippi 66. Manhattan - Gabreleski, Louis, DT, Indiana 67. Death Valley - Luxmore, Terrell, G, Florida State 68. Lake Erie - Crandall, Leland, DE, Idaho 69. Champaign - Barclay, Neal, G, Cincinnati 70. Fort Knox - Bemont, Cornell, G, Arkansas 71. Niagara Falls - Tormenti, Larry, G, Michigan State 72. Napa Valley - Haskell, Vernon, CB, Iowa 73. Providence - Buckley, Randal, OLB, Washington State 74. Ocean City - Ballard, Lance, S, Oregon State 75. Key West - Allen, Ike, RB, Northwestern 76. Tijuana - Gregoire, Cole, G, Baylor 77. Norfolk - Glaze, Tim, RB, James Madison 78. Memphis - Rivera, Lamont, QB, St. Francis, Pa. 79. Pensacola - Gall, A.J., DE, Colorado 81. Athens - Vance, Gilbert, ILB, Duke 82. Fort Wayne - Fisk, Austin, T, Louisiana Tech 83. Tulsa - Kegley, Sean, DE, Washington State 84. Louisville - Weber, D.J., G, Oklahoma State 85. Thunder Bay - Phillips, Gabe, QB, Mississippi State 86. Thunder Bay - Marsh, Cedric, G, Howard 87. Bermuda - Jamison, Chad, DE, Northwestern 88. Hawk Mountain - Wynn, Dominic, DT, Oregon

We pick here in the fairly late 3rd round, and then we will go over two full rounds without apick... so make it count boys.

With this third round pick, I think there are several pretty deserving players.

RB Bo Biggs has been the best RB in the draft for quite some time, and has the look of a player who should get better. We’re a run-heavy team, and he could be asked to do a lot – he could be a good match, especially after a defensive-heavy draft (and offseason) so far.

There are also a few defensive players who fit our typical mold – DTs Steven Blair and Arnold Tanner both look like they could exceed expectations.

FS Dominic Duran might be good enough to become a starter, and he plays a position that we actually don’t have filled too well. (I actually sorta like Jerald Brooks, but at the moment nobody will confuse him with Ronnie Lott) Duran might have some upside as well, too.

These guys could all make sense to me… and I suspect they are all gone by late round five.

RB Bo Biggs gets my vote...our team likes to run the ball so much that we need 2 RBs, this was very easily seen the past 2 seasons when Crawford had so many yards in spot duty...For Value out of a pick I think RB is the way to go here.

Bo Biggs would be a great pickup for the offense, his only liability being his reciever skills..

While we bring up the RB situation.. don't be surprised to see our offense lean on the run a little less with the change in personel.. we have some great receivers and not the superstar at RB that we used to.. plus, if last year was any evidence, if Cog is starting he doesn't listen anyways

I'm thinking that we should be able to re-sign our FB Ethan Brock, which shoudl keep us solid at that position. Doesn't necessarily rule out taking a FB later, but it's certainly possible that we won't feel it as a pressing need.

Some potential picks:

C Shane Wilcox - If he doesn't look bust prone, he could be solid in the future..

RB Curtis Donovan - I would use him on passing downs, looks like he could be a good back out of the backfield, although of little value in our running scheme..

FL Matthew Morrell - His big play receiving alone intrigues me, particuraly if we are going to be more pass heavy this year..

P Marco Messina - This guy could punt for us for a LONG time..

Just so you guys know my schedule is very packed today. I will try to give some input when I can squeez it in, but don't hold the draft up because of me. I think we have addressed most of the concerns on the defense. If we see a sfaety that looks decent I wouldn't mind taking one other than that if you see a BPA defensive guy and there si no one else we need on offense I say snatch him up.

Heh, not much progress today, eh? I've been away very busy, but when I get achance, I will zip through the rest of the draft, grab a few free agents, and hand off the files to the coordinators.

I have signed a few URFA players to get us up to 60, but am flexible on where we go from here. (I took guys with redliner potential, but if there are other directions to go, that’s fine by me)

I’ll post the updated files, and we can go into the season soon.

Good work QS! I look at Morrell, and wonder why I didn't see him.. he looks almost as good, if not better than Perea our second round pick last year.. I'm happy with the roster, so as far as I'm concerned we can do training camp and then start the preseason..

Ok to keep things moving a bit here. I also didn;t really see anyone on defense that looked better than what we had so I have made the following position changes.

DE Edwin Casas was moved to LDE
DE A.J. Hitchcock was moved to LDE
DT CLifton Ramsey was moved to LDT
CB Austim Maffett was moved to RCB

And we run though training camp. Here are the updated files.

On a side note after a second training camp Howard Hammond without question does not look like the second comming of Kent Wolfe. Which I think is a good thing. He had the signs of a break out player and busted anyway.

So it looks like the signs of busts and breakouts still exist, but maybe they just aren't always right. Even if they are right a good portion of the time if you get guys like Hammond here and there I think that is a good thing.

While I agree globally that uncertainty is good... in this particular case we might be in for trouble. Howard Hammond is a fan favorite - this could get costly if we have to pay a bum big money.

Shoudl we bury him on the depth chart to try to dimish his popularity? That might not be in keeping with the spirit of our rules, but it might be our best way out of this mess.

We have a trade offer on the table for RT Emmanuel Johnston - we'd get a 2nd round pick, and it passes our "fairness test." I'm very tempted, especially since we have just re-signed RT Marshall Cunningham... but we shoud get some input from Bee abnd wade first, I think.

Complete sidetrack thought... does anyone ever look at the game' "power ratings?" I just did, and Littl Rock is an obvious aberration - why are we rated as a 1 out of 100? Looks like a tiny game bug to me.

I don't think that will diminish his popularity. Although it's possible it will make him disgruntled to the point where he won;t resign with us which would have the same effect.

Quite honestly I don;t know that we have to bend the rules to do that. He doesn't look like a guy that should be on our depth chart anyway.

Has anyone looked at Wolfe this season? His ratings grew again! That guy is an absolute monster.

Yeah- he is the # 2 Rated DT...That is pretty good from a smallish-3rd round pick...

I might have missed this- but what are the thoughts on the QB position for this season?
Coghill is the better rated passed, and he is our QB of the future...but last season he was very inconsistant when he played, and threw 15 INTs to 12 TDs...Also, he knows 14 formations (1 more than Pritchett)
Pritchett on the other hand has been our starting QB for 4 seasons, he won us the championship games 2 seasons ago....and when healthy last season he put up great #s.

Should WR Blaine be moved to FL, to start ahead of Hill? I know we just gave Hill a big contract, but his ratings are not as good and he only caught 289 yards last season....Another option would be to move McAllister to FL and have Hill be the # 2 guy.
Also, regarding the WR position I really like Mathew Morrell- I think we should try to get him as much playing time as possible so that he can reach his potential....That was a great pick especially for the 5th round, one small problem is he is a fan favorite so it might cost us big in the future...but he could be a great player.

The offensive line looks like it is going to be very solid this year, which should help the running game out since we lost The Ox. I also like the trading of Johnson (if we decide to) a 2nd round pick could come in handy, and Johnson's contract is up after this season and I don't think we could afford to bring him back...so it seems like a good trade.

On defense everything looks pretty good....a few notes..
Former 1st round pick Irv Boyd has a clause in his contract that if he catches 2 INTs the last year is voided...so I would expect him to be a FA after this season- and it looks as though he is going to want big-time money....I am not sure that we will be able to pay him if he asks for a lot (similar to Wolfe)

At Safety our 2 best guys are both SS, are we planning on switching one....or is someone else going to be the starter at FS?

I think that if we can stay fairly healthy this season we have a chance to go to the Championship game again...we have a very solid roster across the board and good depth in key positions (QB, O-Line, RB) on offense, I really think we have a good chance at going far into the playoffs again.

Did Perea's ratings drop? He doesn't look like the stud wideout I thought he did last season.

Heh we better really like SS Ty Lincoln. We gave him a one year "no risk" contract, but he is idolized by fans so we can't get rid of him and we have to offer him a contract next season.

Hmm....Maybe we should consider just using him in a back-up role so that his contract demands won't be to high....Just a suggestion...

I'm ok with that trade. With Cunningham back in the fold and Wooldridge coming back late in the season, we should be ok at tackle.

I think we were going to take a look after training camp and decide whether we stick with the old man or go with the young gun. I haven't taken a look since training camp to see how much Coghill has progressed...I'll try to find time this evening when I get home (really busy right now at work ).

wade,

Here are the updated game files with the defensive settings in them.

After the first two games can you swap both DE positions and DT's Hammond and Hill?

WR Deion Perea definitely dropped off since last season - he's not the stud he fleetingly appeared to be... maybe his injury last year had permeanent effects?

As for SS Ty Lincoln... ack, I'm sorry yet again. I've gotten so used to looking at the popularity for our star players, I just neglected to do so for undrafted rookies. So, he's already idolized, eh? Wonder what the story is there...

The good news about the safety is he's more popular than Donnie Bridgeman so Bridgeman's unprotected now.

I think he's so popular because he went to such a well known school...Augustana.

Looking at the quarterbacks, I think Coghill has made enough progress that he should be given a shot to start.

I'll do my part in the morning, busy day... But I'm all for the trade, I'll pull the trigger on that...

If you make the trade, we'll need to pick up a tackle to back up our starters until Wooldridge returns.

Mayeb we can swing one of our seventeen centers out to be our backup at tackle? Especially if we were going to make a cut there anyway...

None of our Centers could make the transition very well, but they're still better options at T than what the URFA Market holds.. so, I move C Kenny Shephard over to RT.. He takes a pretty significant hit, but he would have been cut anyways.. If he has to see any significant PT over there, we're in trouble...
