The California Angels edged the Boston Red Sox at ANAHEIM STADIUM by the score
of 5 to 4.

California brought 3 runs across the plate in the 3rd inning when they had 3
base hits.  They would be enough to earn the win.  California banged out 9 on
the afternoon.  

The win went to Ron Romanick(1-2) who allowed 3 runs in 7 innings. Donnie
Moore was credited with his 4th save.  Bob Ojeda(2-2) ended up with the loss.

The California ballclub's record now stands at 9-11.  With the loss, the
Boston ballclub's record is 13-6.

CLEVELAND AT KANSAS CITY

Onix Concepcion had 2 base hits as the Kansas City Royals defeated the reeling
Cleveland Indians 5 to 0 at ROYALS STADIUM.

Kansas City took the lead for good in the bottom of the 2nd inning when they
tallied 2 runs on 2 hits.  That was all the runs Bret Saberhagen(3-2) needed.
Kansas City had 11 hits for the game and Cleveland had 6.  

Dan Quisenberry got the save, his 4th.  The losing pitcher was Roy Smith(1-2).
He pitched 6 innings and surrendered 7 hits and 1 walk.

TORONTO AT OAKLAND

Jose Rijo delivered 3 solid innings and right fielder Mike Davis lofted one
into the 'cheap seats' as the Oakland A's outscored the Toronto Blue Jays 3
to 2.

Rijo(2-1) came on to close the door tight in relief.  He did not allow a
baserunner in his 3 innings reducing his ERA from 2.42 to 2.17.  The game was
a scoreless duel until the 6th inning.  

Doyle Alexander(1-3) was the losing pitcher.  He surrendered 3 runs and 10
hits in 7 innings.

MILWAUKEE AT SEATTLE

Right fielder Phil Bradley slammed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Seattle
Mariners defeated the Milwaukee Brewers by a score of 7 to 2 at The
Kingdome.

Bradley provided much of the offense.  He cracked a solo homerun in the 1st
inning and cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his 8th of the season)
in the 7th inning.  Overall Seattle out-hit Milwaukee 13 to 8.  

Mike Moore(2-3) got the win allowing 2 runs in 7 innings. Danny Darwin(0-2)
was tagged with the loss.  He pitched 6 innings giving up 10 hits and 1 walk.

NEW YORK AT TEXAS

Center fielder Rickey Henderson had 3 base hits and scored 3 times at
ARLINGTON STADIUM as the New York Yankees beat the struggling Texas Rangers
12 to 5.

Ed Whitson(2-1) had a fairly solid outing.  He surrendered 8 hits and 2 walks
in 5 and 1/3 innings.  New York simply wore out the Texas pitching staff,
scoring in 6 different innings.  

Whitson got relief help from Bob Shirley who gained credit for his 1st save.
Charlie Hough(2-2) absorbed the loss.  He was hit hard and gave up 9 hits and
5 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.

In a two run game the Montreal Expos got by the Philadelphia Phillies by the
score of 4 to 2.

Philadelphia never recovered after Montreal took the lead in the 4th inning
scoring one runner utilizing 2 base hits.  Montreal and Philadelphia each
finished the afternoon with 6 hits.  

Joe Hesketh(3-0) went 7 and 1/3 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory. Jeff
Reardon recorded his 8th save.  Shane Rawley(2-2) was the loser.  He
surrendered 5 hits and 3 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.

Carlton Fisk had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the Chicago White Sox beat the Baltimore
Orioles by a score of 12 to 5.

Fisk provided much of the offense.  He laced a one-base hit in the 2nd inning,
doubled which scored a run in the 3rd inning, lashed a single in the 5th
inning and hit a bases-empty home run (his 1st of the season) in the 9th
inning.  Chicago dominated offensively as they scored in 6 different innings.

Tom Seaver(2-2) picked up the victory, allowing 5 runs in 8 innings. Storm
Davis(2-1) was given the loss.  He was knocked around, surrendering 7 runs in
2 and 1/3 innings.  

Chicago now has a record of 8-9.  Even with the loss, Baltimore still has a
nice 8-2 record in recent weeks.  They are 12-7 on the season.

BOSTON AT CALIFORNIA

Left fielder Jim Rice cracked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI at ANAHEIM STADIUM
where the Boston Red Sox beat the California Angels by the score of 12 to
10.

Rice had a good day at the plate.  He blasted a solo shot in the 1st inning,
delivered a one-base hit in the 4th inning and clubbed a three-run home run
(his 6th of the season) in the 4th inning.  California made it exciting in
the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.  

Bruce Hurst(2-2) allowed 9 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Tim Lollar recorded the save, his 1st.  Kirk McCaskill(1-3) was
tagged with the loss.  He was knocked around by Boston, allowing 6 hits and 2
walks in 3 and 2/3 innings.  

'Just one or two mistakes were all it took to beat us today' Gene Mauch said.
'We take these games one day at a time, but this one was hard to take.'

MINNESOTA AT DETROIT

Mike Smithson completed the game without help from the bullpen as the
Minnesota Twins defeated the Detroit Tigers by the score of 6 to 5 at TIGER
STADIUM.

The game was won by Minnesota with a run in the 8th inning.  Ron Washington
doubled.  Kirby Puckett stepped into the batter's box and he drew a walk.
Roy Smalley then grounded into a double play.  Kent Hrbek came up and he
doubled scoring the run.  Detroit had a chance in the 9th but they came up
short.  

Smithson(3-0), allowing 5 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Jack
Morris(2-1) took the loss.  He was unable to control the Minnesota offense
and allowed 10 hits and 7 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings.  

The Minnesota ballclub's record now stands at a division leading 13-7.  With
the loss, the Detroit ballclub's record is 10-8.

CLEVELAND AT KANSAS CITY

The Kansas City Royals had very little trouble at ROYALS STADIUM downing the
struggling Cleveland Indians.  The score was 9 to 3.

The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance
provided by John Wathan.  He doubled bringing in a run in the 7th inning and
smacked a three-run homer (his 1st of the season) in the 8th inning.  The
teams had been locked in a scoreless duel until the 7th inning.  

The winning pitcher was Mark Gubicza(1-1) who allowed 3 runs in 8 and 1/3
innings. Neal Heaton(0-4) was the loser.  With this win, Kansas City has a
6-13 record.  They have been 4-6 lately.  Cleveland has a record of 5-15
after the loss.

TORONTO AT OAKLAND

Garth Iorg slammed a homerun and had 3 RBI at OAKLAND COLISEUM as the Toronto
Blue Jays beat the Oakland A's by the count of 4 to 2.

Luis Leal(1-1) pitched a solid game.  He was reached for 8 hits and 1 walk in
6 innings reducing his ERA from 7.94 to 4.63.  Toronto banged out 11 on the
afternoon.  

Tom Henke earned his 7th save.  Tim Birtsas(0-4) was the losing pitcher.  He
gave up 7 hits and 4 walks in 7 innings.

MILWAUKEE AT SEATTLE

Ivan Calderon cracked a homer and had 2 RBI and Matt Young allowed Chuck
Cottier to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game at The Kingdome where
the Seattle Mariners beat the Milwaukee Brewers 3 to 1.

Seattle delivered all the runs required in the 6th inning scoring 3 runners on
3 hits.  The big moment was provided by Calderon who made the crowd happy
when he lifted one out of the park for a two run home run (his 1st of the
season).  Milwaukee threatened in the 9th but Seattle was able to put down
the rally.  

The win was credited to Young(2-1) who went the whole way allowing 1 run.
Moose Haas(1-3) ended up with the loss.  'I had a little blister on my index
finger before the game, but I thought it was nothing.' Young said.  'I was
lucky I got a win because I couldn't put the ball where I wanted it.'

NEW YORK AT TEXAS

The Texas Rangers put a halt to their 8 game losing streak and easily topped
the New York Yankees; the final score was 10 to 4.

Duane Walker enjoyed a fine day at the plate.  He hit a 'grand salami' to the
delight of his teammates (his 1st of the season) in the 1st inning and
delivered a single in the 8th inning.  Texas had a total of 13 hits for the
game.  

The victory went to Jeff Russell(1-2) who went 6 and 1/3 innings, allowing 2
runs. Joe Cowley(2-2) suffered the loss.  'It's been a rough ride lately, but
this was a good win for us' said Bobby Valentine, 'Maybe this will put us
back on track.'

Catcher Jody Davis had 3 base hits and 2 RBI at WRIGLEY FIELD as the Chicago
Cubs staged a comeback win over the San Francisco Giants by the count of 6 to
5.

Chicago came up with the deciding runs in the 9th inning with 2 runs on 2
hits.  Davey Lopes led off and he slapped a one-base hit.  Ryne Sandberg was
next and he laid down a sacrifice bunt.  Keith Moreland then drew a walk.
Leon Durham was a strikeout victim, unable to help out.  Ron Cey stepped into
the box and drew a walk to load the bases.  Davis contributed to the rally
and doubled resulting in an exciting win for Chicago and a wild post-game
celebration by the home town fans.  For the game Chicago out-hit San
Francisco 13 to 10.  

The victory was credited to George Frazier(2-1) who went 1 inning, allowing no
runs. The losing pitcher was Mark Davis(0-1) in relief.  He gave up 2 runs
and 2 hits in 1 and 2/3 innings.  

'That was exciting!,' Davis said.  'I would have paid money to watch this
one.'

ATLANTA AT CINCINNATI

The Atlanta Braves defeated the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 9 to 5 at
RIVERFRONT STADIUM.

Rick Mahler(2-2) had a fairly solid outing.  He went 6 and 1/3 innings
surrendering 6 hits and 3 walks.  Atlanta totaled 14 on the afternoon.

Rick Camp recorded his 1st save.  The loss was charged to Jay Tibbs(0-4). He
allowed Atlanta 7 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings of work.

Darryl Strawberry smashed 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI and Dwight Gooden reeled
off a total of 10 strikeouts at SHEA STADIUM as the New York Mets beat the
Houston Astros 10 to 3.

Strawberry helped send the fans home happy.  He cleared the fences for a
two-run home run in the 3rd inning and cracked a two-run shot (his 6th of the
season) in the 5th inning.  New York finished with 10 hits in the victory.

Gooden(3-2) went 8 and 2/3 innings allowing 3 runs for the victory. Nolan
Ryan(3-2) absorbed the loss.  He allowed 3 homeruns in 4 innings of work.

When asked about his strikeout total for the game, Gooden offered, 'The fan's
really got into it.  It is fun to see them tally up the strikeout totals up
there in the stands.  Fortunately, I kept them busy this afternoon - of
course, it would be all for naught without the 'W'.'

MONTREAL AT PHILADELPHIA

Derrel Thomas slammed 2 homeruns at VETERANS STADIUM as the Philadelphia
Phillies won in dramatic fashion coming back to beat the Montreal Expos in 10
innings by the count of 9 to 5.

Both teams were tied at 4 runs apiece after nine innings.  Philadelphia came
out the victor in the 10th inning.  The key at-bat was by Thomas who made the
Philadelphia fans a happy lot when he emptied the bases with a Grand Slam
homerun (his 2nd of the season).  A wild and woolly affair, this game saw the
lead change 5 times.  

Don Carman(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 2/3 of an inning. Gary
Lucas(0-1) was hit with the loss in relief.  He pitched 1/3 of an inning
allowing 2 hits and no walks.

'I was in my hotel room the other night, working on my swing and made some
adjustments,' Thomas said. 'I'm always working on it. If they are getting you
out certain ways, you've got to make changes.'

SAN DIEGO AT PITTSBURGH

allowing 6 hits and 2 walks.  San Diego out-hit Pittsburgh for the game, 11
hits to 7.  

Goose Gossage gained credit for his 7th save.  Rick Rhoden(0-4) was charged
with the loss.  He was touched for 10 hits and 2 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.


LOS ANGELES AT ST. LOUIS

25,670 fans were treated to a fine game at BUSCH STADIUM as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end.  The St. Louis Cardinals won by the
slimmest of margins, 8 to 7.

St. Louis jumped out to the early lead in the first inning when they scored 2
runs on 1 hit.  The crucial at-bat was provided by Tom Nieto who came through
for the home fans when he tripled which was good for two runs.  The Los
Angeles bats were silent in the 9th.  

The win went to Joaquin Andujar(4-0) who allowed 3 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings.
Andujar got help from Bill Campbell who earned his 1st save.  The losing
pitcher was Fernando Valenzuela(3-1).  He struggled with his control issuing
7 walks in 4 innings.  

'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his
best stuff,' Whitey Herzog said after the game.  'Andujar did not have
command of his pitches most of the afternoon, but he proved he really knew
how to pitch!'

Left fielder Gary Roenicke smashed 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Baltimore
Orioles outscored the Chicago White Sox 9 to 1.

Roenicke provided much of the offense.  He cleared the fences for a two-run
home run in the 4th inning and bombed a two-run dinger (his 3rd of the
season) in the 8th inning.  Both teams finished the game with 8 hits.

Jimmy Key allowed Bobby Cox to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game and

California Angels by a score of 8 to 3.

Whitt had a big day at the plate. He lined a base-hit in the 2nd inning,
delivered a single resulting in a run in the 3rd inning, lofted a three-run
bomb (his 4th of the season) in the 4th inning and stroked a one-base hit in
the 9th inning.  After the 4th inning, neither team was able to score.

Key(3-0) allowed 3 runs on the game. Jim Slaton(0-3) was the losing pitcher.
He was unable to control the Toronto offense and allowed 8 hits and 3 walks
in 3 and 2/3 innings.

The Detroit Tigers edged the Minnesota Twins in 12 innings at TIGER STADIUM by

The score was knotted at 2 after nine innings.  Detroit won it in the 12th
inning.  Lance Parrish smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' (his 3rd of the
season) resulting in an exciting win for Detroit and a raucous post-game
celebration by the home town fans.  Detroit won despite being out-hit by
Minnesota 10 hits to 7.  

Willie Hernandez(2-1) went 4 and 1/3 innings allowing no runs for the win.
Pete Filson(1-2) took the loss in relief.  He was unable to retire a batter
and surrendered 1 hit and no walks.


CLEVELAND AT KANSAS CITY

Right fielder Omar Moreno hit 3 doubles and scored 3 times and Bud Black
tossed a complete game at ROYALS STADIUM as the Kansas City Royals won in
their last at-bat beating the struggling Cleveland Indians by the count of 5
to 4.

The game was won by Kansas City with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning.
Moreno doubled.  Jerry Reed then let a pitch get away from him.  Jim Sundberg
struck out, unable to help the rally.  Jorge Orta came up and he was walked
intentionally.  Reed then let one slip out of his hand for a wild pitch
making Kansas City the victors to the delight of the home town faithful.
Kansas City had 8 hits for the afternoon.  

Black(2-2) got the victory, allowing 4 runs for the game. The losing pitcher
was Reed(0-1) in relief.  He pitched 3 innings giving up 2 hits and 2
walks.


MILWAUKEE AT OAKLAND

Oakland promptly took the lead in their half of the first when they scored 4

Codiroli(3-2) and Oakland.  That was all the run support Codiroli required.
Steve Ontiveros pitched a perfect ninth to earn his 3rd save.  

Ted Higuera(2-2) was given the loss.  He allowed 3 homeruns in 8 innings of
work.

Kingdome.  The final score was a lop-sided 16 to 4.

Rich Gedman enjoyed a fine day at the plate.  He lost the ball over the fence
for three runs (his 6th of the season) in the 3rd inning, stroked a single in
the 5th inning and laced a one-base hit in the 6th inning.  Boston bats were
hot in the 5th inning when they had 7 runs on 6 hits and the 6th inning which
saw them plate 5 runs on 6 hits.  Boston had 15 hits overall, while Seattle
had 8.  

Al Nipper(4-0) was the winner allowing 4 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings. Frank
Wills(2-1) was charged with the loss.  He served up 3 gopher balls in 4
innings.

In a dramatic ending the New York Yankees staged a comeback and held on to win

utilizing 2 base hits.  After an out was recorded, Andre Robertson started
the rally when he drew a walk.  Don Mattingly came next and he slapped a
base-hit.  Dave Winfield then belted a three-run homer (his 3rd of the
season).  The game was a wild affair with the lead changing hands 5 times.

The victory was credited to Rich Bordi(2-0) who went 4 innings, allowing 2
runs. Dave Schmidt(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief.  He was knocked
around pretty good, giving up 3 runs in 2 and 1/3 innings.  

After the game, it took a long while before Bobby Valentine emerged from his
office.  In a subdued tone he answered only a couple of questions.  He
concluded with, 'Fellows, sorry I'm not in a very talkative mood this
afternoon, as I think you'll understand.  I'm sure you'll find the banter a
lot more light-hearted over in the New York locker room.'

22,805 fans were treated to a fine game at WRIGLEY FIELD as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end.  The Chicago Cubs won by the slimmest
of margins, 4 to 3.

Ray Fontenot(3-1) gave Chicago a solid outing.  He went 6 and 2/3 innings
surrendering 5 hits and 2 walks lowering his ERA to 2.89.  San Francisco
threatened in the 9th but Chicago was able to put down the rally.  

Fontenot got relief help from Lee Smith who gained credit for his 4th save.
Vida Blue(1-3) absorbed the loss.  He pitched 4 and 1/3 innings allowing 4
hits and 3 walks.

Chicago continued their winnings ways improving their record to a division
leading 13-6.  They are 9-1 in their last ten games.  With the loss, San
Francisco has a record of 4-6 lately, 10-10 overall.

ATLANTA AT CINCINNATI

In a close game the Atlanta Braves got by the Cincinnati Reds by the score of
6 to 4.

The game started off with Atlanta taking the lead in the first scoring 4
runners on 4 hits.  Atlanta banged out 10 on the afternoon.  

Steve Bedrosian(1-2) got the win allowing 4 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings. Jeff
Dedmon was credited with his 1st save.  Mario Soto(2-2) was tagged with the
loss.  He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 8 hits and 6 walks in
4 and 1/3 innings.  

The Atlanta ballclub's record now stands at 7-13.  With this loss, Cincinnati
has a 4-6 record of late, 7-14 overall.

HOUSTON AT NEW YORK

Sid Fernandez had a strong outing at SHEA STADIUM where the New York Mets beat
the Houston Astros 6 to 3.

New York did all the necessary damage in the 4th inning when they tallied 6
runs on 4 hits.  The key offensive moment was provided by Keith Hernandez who
came through for the home fans when he lofted a three-run 'big-fly' (his 1st
of the season).  Neither team managed to score after the 4th inning.  

The winning pitcher was Fernandez(3-0) who allowed 3 runs in 8 innings. Jesse
Orosco recorded his 2nd save.  Mike Scott(1-1) was hit with the loss.  He was
hit hard and gave up 6 hits and 3 walks in 3 and 2/3 innings.  


MONTREAL AT PHILADELPHIA

Von Hayes cracked a homer as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Montreal
Expos by the score of 8 to 3 at VETERANS STADIUM.

Philadelphia wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning as they
scored 5 runs on 3 base hits.  That early scoring was all that John
Denny(1-4) needed.  Philadelphia rapped out 8 hits for the afternoon.  

Dan Schatzeder(1-2) was the loser.  He gave up 5 runs and 3 hits in 2/3 of an
inning.

SAN DIEGO AT PITTSBURGH

Jose Deleon shut down the San Diego batters on just 2 hits as the Pittsburgh
Pirates topped the San Diego Padres by a score of 4 to 0 at THREE RIVERS
STADIUM.

Deleon(1-2) was simply too much for the San Diego batters.  He surrendered
only 2 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 3.32 to 2.35.
Pittsburgh finished with 8 hits in the victory.  

Andy Hawkins(2-2) suffered the loss.  'Deleon pitched a gem of a game', Dick
Williams recounted.  'He kept our batters off balance the entire game.'

LOS ANGELES AT ST. LOUIS

John Tudor came through with a solid 9 innings at BUSCH STADIUM as the St.
Louis Cardinals beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in 18 innings 6 to 5.

Neither team managed to score in the first nine innings.  St. Louis came out
the victor in the 18th inning.  After an out was recorded, Bob Forsch
doubled.  Vince Coleman stepped up next and he drew a walk.  Tommy Herr then
drew a walk to load the bases.  Jack Clark followed and he ripped a
base-knock making St. Louis the victor and beginning a joyous home town
celebration.  Overall St. Louis out-hit Los Angeles 17 to 12.  

The win was credited to Bill Campbell(1-2) who went 1 inning allowing no runs.
The losing pitcher was Rick Honeycutt(0-3) in relief.  He gave up 4 runs in 1
and 1/3 innings and saw his ERA jump from 4.30 to 5.55.

In a two run game the California Angels got by the Toronto Blue Jays by the

Mike Witt(2-3) pitched a fine game.  He was reached for 6 hits and 2 walks in
7 and 1/3 innings.  Toronto had a chance to come back in the 9th but they
came up short.  

Donnie Moore earned his 5th save.  Jim Clancy(2-1) absorbed the loss.  He
served up 3 homeruns in his 6 innings.  Bobby Cox was subdued after the
ballgame, 'That one really hurts.  If our guys had simply played more
fundamentally sound, we could have won that one.  That is what really ticks
me off!'

MILWAUKEE AT OAKLAND

runs on 3 base hits.  Oakland won despite being out-hit by Milwaukee 12 hits
to 7.  

Bill Krueger(3-1) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs in 6 innings. Jay
Howell recorded his 4th save.  Ray Burris(0-3) was the loser.  


BOSTON AT SEATTLE

pitching duel at The Kingdome.  The Boston Red Sox eventually emerged as
victors over the Seattle Mariners by the score of 3 to 0.

Clemens delivered a fine performance for Clemens.  He allowed 4 hits and 3
walks in 6 and 1/3 innings lowering his ERA from 1.00 to 0.74.  Boston had
only 6 hits for the game.  

Bob Stanley earned the save, his 4th.

Designated hitter Brian Downing ripped 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI at ANAHEIM
STADIUM where the California Angels beat the struggling Milwaukee Brewers 12
to 6.

Downing enjoyed a big day at the plate.  He smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' in
the 1st inning, slapped a single knocking in a run in the 3rd inning, banged
out a one-base hit in the 4th inning, hit a bases-empty home run (his 6th of
the season) in the 6th inning and delivered a base-hit bringing in a run in
the 7th inning.  For the game California out-hit Milwaukee 15 to 12.  

The winning pitcher was Stu Cliburn(2-0) who allowed no runs in 5 innings.
Pete Vuckovich(0-3) was the loser.  He allowed 9 hits and 4 walks in 3 and
1/3 innings.  

'They made a couple of mistakes and I took full advantage,' Downing said 'next
time I'm sure they'll pitch me tougher.'

TEXAS AT CLEVELAND

The Texas Rangers came roaring back in the top of the ninth to spoil the
anticipated celebration of the hometown fans.  The final score,, was 8 to
3.

Texas erupted with the game winning runs in the top of the 9th inning scoring
6 runners on 7 hits.  The key offensive moment was provided by Geno Petralli
who silenced the stadium when he delivered a one-base hit which was good for
two runs.  Overall Texas out-hit Cleveland 11 to 7.  

Dave Rozema(2-1) went 2 and 1/3 innings allowing no runs for the victory.
Jamie Easterly(0-2) absorbed the loss in relief.  He surrendered 3 runs and 4
hits in 2/3 of an inning.  

After the game, it took a long while before Pat Corrales emerged from his
office.  In a subdued tone he answered only a couple of questions.  He
concluded with, 'Fellows, sorry I'm not in a very talkative mood this
afternoon, as I think you'll understand.  I'm sure you'll find the banter a
lot more light-hearted over in the Texas locker room.'

CHICAGO AT DETROIT

In an exciting finish the Detroit Tigers pulled out a win over the Chicago
White Sox by a score of 4 to 2 at TIGER STADIUM.

Detroit had the game winning rally in the 9th inning scoring 2 runs using 2
hits.  After an out was recorded, Barbaro Garbey initiated the scoring spurt
when he doubled.  Dave Bergman was next and he popped a two-run clout over
the fence (his 1st of the season) resulting in a mighty exciting win for
Detroit and the 24,517 home town fans in attendance.  Chicago had 10 hits in
the game while Detroit had 6, but Detroit had the more timely hits.  

Bill Scherrer(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 2/3 of an inning and
allowing no runs. Dan Spillner(1-1) took the loss in relief.  He pitched 2/3
of an inning giving up 2 hits and no walks.

With this win, Detroit has a 12-8 record.  They have been 5-5 lately.  Chicago
has a record of 8-11 after the loss.

BALTIMORE AT MINNESOTA

Kent Hrbek homered and had 2 RBI and Bert Blyleven dominated striking out 11
Baltimore batters as the Minnesota Twins topped the Baltimore Orioles by a

Blyleven(4-2) was tremendous on the mound for Minnesota.  He didn't give up
much, just 4 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 2.22.
Minnesota finished with just 6 hits in the victory.  

Scott McGregor(2-2) was charged with the loss.  'Everything felt great'
Blyleven said. 'I had a good fastball, I felt I could throw it by everybody
today.'

KANSAS CITY AT NEW YORK

overall, while Kansas City had 7.  

Dave Righetti recorded his 9th save. Charlie Leibrandt(0-3) was the losing
pitcher.  He got hit hard, allowing 13 hits and 3 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings.

Jesse Barfield blasted a homerun and had 3 RBI as the Toronto Blue Jays
outscored the Seattle Mariners 10 to 2.

Dave Stieb(5-0) pitched a fine game.  He went 8 and 2/3 innings surrendering
10 hits and 3 walks reducing his ERA from 2.79 to 2.47.  Toronto finished
with 15 hits while Seattle ended up with 10.  

Bill Swift(0-3) suffered the loss.  He allowed 5 runs and 7 hits in 5 and 2/3
innings.

Chicago never recovered after San Diego took the lead in the top of the 6th
inning when they scored 2 runs on 3 hits.  The crucial at-bat was provided by
Garvey who deflated the spirits of the home town crowd when he singled
plating two runs.  San Diego had 11 hits for the afternoon while Chicago had
5.  

The win was credited to Lamarr Hoyt(2-1) who went 5 innings allowing 2 runs.
The loss was charged to Scott Sanderson(1-2).  His ERA increased from 4.30 to
5.40 as he allowed 6 runs in 7 innings.

Roger McDowell pitched 5 strong innings and center fielder Darryl Strawberry
went deep at RIVERFRONT STADIUM where the New York Mets beat the Cincinnati
Reds in 13 innings by the score of 8 to 5.

The score was tied at 5 after nine.  New York ended up winning it in the 13th
inning.  Strawberry started the scoring when he ripping a solo home run (his
7th of the season).  Clint Hurdle next to the plate and he doubled.  Mookie
Wilson then laced a base-knock.  After an out was recorded, Wally Backman
stepped up to the plate and he drew a walk to load the bases.  Rafael Santana
stepped into the box and laced a one-base hit as another two runners scored.
New York kept the scorekeepers busy in the 3rd inning when they had 5 runs on
6 hits.  New York ended up with 20 hits for the game while Cincinnati had 9.

McDowell(3-0) went 5 innings allowing no runs for the win. Ted Power(0-2)
ended up with the loss in relief.  He surrendered 5 hits and 1 walk in 3
innings.

In a close game the Philadelphia Phillies got by the Houston Astros by the

Larry Andersen(1-0) came through for John Felske with an excellent relief
stint.  He did not allow a hit or a walk in his 1 inning.  The Houston
batters went down meekly in the 9th.  

Kent Tekulve earned the save, his 2nd.  Bob Knepper(2-2) was given the loss.
He pitched 6 and 2/3 innings and surrendered 7 hits and 2 walks.

STADIUM.

Los Angeles was unable to recover after Pittsburgh went ahead in the 4th
inning scoring a single run utilizing 2 base hits.  Pittsburgh finished with
12 hits in the victory.  

Reuschel(3-1) was credited with the shutout. Jerry Reuss(1-1) was hit with the
loss.  He gave up 10 hits and no walks in 5 innings.  

Pittsburgh now has a record of 8-12.  With the loss, the Los Angeles
ballclub's record is 14-9.

SAN FRANCISCO AT ST. LOUIS

Danny Cox took a no-hitter into the 6th inning as the St. Louis Cardinals
defeated the San Francisco Giants by the score of 6 to 0 at BUSCH
STADIUM.

Cox(2-1) dominated San Francisco hitters.  He allowed only 1 hit and 3 walks
in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 2.64 to 2.04.  The right-handed Cox had
his no-hit bid broken up by Joel Youngblood who singled with two outs in the
6th inning.  St. Louis banged out 9 on the afternoon.  

Dave Lapoint(1-4) was the loser.  He allowed a few too many baserunners giving
up 8 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings.

In a thrilling finish the California Angels won in dramatic fashion coming
back to beat the struggling Milwaukee Brewers by the count of 3 to
2.

California came up with the deciding runs in the bottom of the 9th inning
scoring 2 runs using 3 hits.  Doug Decinces kicked off the action when he
smashed a solo-shot out of the park (his 4th of the season).  After an out
was recorded, Daryl Sconiers stepped up to the plate and he doubled.  After
another out, Rob Wilfong came up and he hit a single giving California the
win much to the delight of the home town crowd.  California had just 5 hits
for the afternoon.  

Rafael Lugo(3-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 3 innings and allowing
no runs. Danny Darwin(0-3) absorbed the loss.  He pitched 8 and 1/3 innings
giving up 4 hits and 6 walks.

'Now there is a lesson in perseverance for you,' Wilfong noted.  'It was
looking pretty dim there for a while, but we just kept plugging away and it
really paid off in spades! And it was great to see the crowd go crazy there
at the end!'

TEXAS AT CLEVELAND

Charlie Hough tossed a complete game at MUNICIPAL STADIUM as the Texas Rangers
staged a comeback win over the ice-cold Cleveland Indians by the count of 4
to 3.

Texas scored the decisive runs in a big 9th inning with 3 runs utilizing 2
base hits.  Curtis Wilkerson opened up the inning nicely when he drew a walk.
Steve Buechele struck out, unable to help the rally.  Oddibe McDowell then
stroked a one-base hit, and an error was also committed.  Alan Bannister
stepped in and he drew a walk to load the bases.  Toby Harrah stepped into
the box and drew a walk which plated a run.  After another out, Larry Parrish
stepped up to the plate and he banged out a single adding another two runs to
their total.  Texas rapped out 8 hits for the afternoon.  

The win was credited to Hough(3-2) who went the whole way allowing 3 runs.
Jamie Easterly(0-3) ended up with the loss in relief.  Texas scored big
getting 3 runs off him in 2 innings.  

Easterly was feeling apologetic in the locker room, 'I sure let that one get
away.  What a miserable feeling to let the guys down; and our fans.  One
minute things are looking great, then. BOOM, it's over with! I just hope I
get a chance to redeem myself real soon!'

At TIGER STADIUM, the Detroit faithful were treated to an intriguing pitcher's
duel.  Walt Terrell(3-1) finally bested his Chicago counterpart, Gene
Nelson(0-1), by the score of 2 to 1.

Terrell was in control of the game from the outset.  He was stingy on the
mound, allowing just 3 hits and 4 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings.  Terrell racked
up 8 strikeouts lowering his ERA from 4.70 to 3.52.  Chicago had a chance to
come back in the 9th but they came up short.  

Willie Hernandez got the save, his 6th.  Nelson was hit with the loss.  'It
was a tough one to lose' said Tony LaRussa 'We'll get them next time out.'

BALTIMORE AT MINNESOTA

Center fielder Fred Lynn cracked a homer and had 4 RBI as the Baltimore

METRODOME.

Baltimore jumped out to the early lead in the first inning scoring a single
run on 2 hits.  Baltimore had 17 hits overall, while Minnesota had 10.  

The victory went to Mike Boddicker(4-1) who went 8 innings, allowing 3 runs.
John Butcher(2-1) was given the loss.  He was touched for 11 hits and 4 walks
in 5 and 2/3 innings.

the game while Boston had 3.

surrendered 7 hits and 1 walk.

Tom Henke recorded his 8th save.  Mike Moore(2-4) was charged with the loss.
He gave up 6 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings.

hard fought contest in the 10th inning.  Lonnie Smith led off and he doubled.
George Brett stepped into the batter's box and he lined a base-hit bringing
in a run.  After an out was recorded, White came up and he delivered a
single.  White took second on the throw.  Jorge Orta was up next and he
doubled scoring the final run of the inning.  For the game Kansas City
out-hit New York 13 to 4.  

Joe Beckwith(1-1) got the win allowing 1 run in 2 and 1/3 innings. Beckwith
got help from Dan Quisenberry who earned his 5th save.  The losing pitcher
was Rich Bordi(2-1) in relief.  He pitched 2 and 2/3 innings allowing 5 hits
and 1 walk.

The Montreal Expos edged the Atlanta Braves at FULTON CTY STADIUM by the score
of 3 to 2.

Bill Gullickson(1-3) gave Montreal a solid outing.  He surrendered 5 hits and
1 walk in 7 and 2/3 innings seeing his ERA drop from 4.97 to 4.36.  Montreal
had only 5 hits for the afternoon.  

Gullickson got help from Jeff Reardon who was credited with his 10th save.
Pascual Perez(0-3) was the loser.  He surrendered 5 hits and 4 walks in 5 and
2/3 innings.

Billy Hatcher left the yard and had 3 RBI as the Chicago Cubs defeated the San
Diego Padres by a score of 6 to 3 at WRIGLEY FIELD.

Chicago won the game with a rally in the 8th inning with 3 runs on 2 hits.
Keith Moreland led off and started the attack as he laced a single.  Moreland
stole second with some aggressive base running.  After an out was recorded,
Davey Lopes stepped up to the plate and he was walked intentionally.  Richie
Hebner got his chance to keep things going, but he went down on strikes.
Hatcher came to the plate and belted a three-run homer (his 1st of the
season).  Chicago had 10 hits for the afternoon.  

Warren Brusstar(2-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 inning. Lee Smith
recorded the save, his 5th.  Roy Lee Jackson(1-4) took the loss.  He was hit
hard and gave up 10 hits and 2 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings.

Catcher Bo Diaz hit 2 doubles as the Cincinnati Reds staged a dramatic
comeback over the New York Mets by a score of 5 to 4 at RIVERFRONT
STADIUM.

Cincinnati erupted with the game winning runs in the 9th inning with 3 runs
utilizing 5 base hits.  Dave Parker led off and keyed the rally when he
tripled.  Eric Davis next to the plate and he slapped a single knocking in a
run.  Diaz then doubled bringing in another run.  Ron Oester followed and he
laced a one-base hit.  Two outs later Gary Redus came up and he drew a walk
to load the bases.  Eddie Milner joined his teammates in the uprising and
laced a base-hit resulting in an exciting win for Cincinnati and a raucous
post-game celebration by the home town fans.  Cincinnati out-hit New York for
the game, 11 hits to 7.  

The victory was credited to John Franco(2-0) who went 1 inning, allowing no
runs. The loss was charged to Tom Gorman(2-1) in relief.  He allowed 3 hits
and no walks without retiring a batter.  

'What a win!', Franco said. 'These are the kind of games that stand out in
your mind at the end of a season.'

The Philadelphia Phillies toppled the Houston Astros by a 7 to 3 score at
VETERANS STADIUM.

Kevin Gross(2-1) pitched well for Philadelphia in their victory.  He went 6
and 1/3 innings surrendering 3 hits and 5 walks lowering his ERA to 3.60.
Philadelphia finished with 8 hits in the victory.  

Joe Niekro(0-4) suffered the loss.  He surrendered 5 runs and 5 hits in 2/3 of
an inning.

Designated hitter Brian Downing lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 5
RBI as the California Angels defeated the struggling Milwaukee Brewers in 11
innings by a score of 8 to 7 at ANAHEIM STADIUM.

The game was deadlocked at 7 after nine full innings.  California won the hard
fought contest in the 11th inning.  After an out was recorded, Downing
singled.  Mike Brown followed and he doubled.  Ruppert Jones then laced a
single resulting in a mighty exciting win for California and the 45,007 home
town fans in attendance.  This was the kind of game that many fans love as
the lead changed hands 5 times.  

The victory went to Jim Slaton(1-3) who went 2 and 1/3 innings, allowing no
runs. Bob Gibson(0-4) absorbed the loss in relief.  The California ballclub's
record now stands at 13-13.  Not able to get much going in recent weeks,
Milwaukee is 1-9 of late and now has an overall record of 3-21, worst in the
division.

TEXAS AT CLEVELAND

Pete O'Brien went deep and had 3 RBI as the Texas Rangers defeated the
floundering Cleveland Indians by the score of 12 to 8 at MUNICIPAL
STADIUM.

Texas came up with 4 runs in the top of the 3rd inning with the help of 4
hits.  The critical plate appearance was by O'Brien who quieted the home
crowd when he lofted a three-run bomb (his 1st of the season).  Cleveland
threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.  

Burt Hooton(2-2) was the winner allowing 4 runs in 7 and 1/3 innings. Neal
Heaton(0-5) was given the loss.  He was pinned with the loss despite not
allowing an earned run in his 3 and 2/3 innings of work.  

Pat Corrales was subdued after the ballgame, 'That one really hurts.  If our
guys had simply played more fundamentally sound, we could have won that one.
That is what really ticks me off!'

CHICAGO AT DETROIT

Jack Morris(3-1) and Tom Seaver(2-3) treated the Detroit fans to a fine
pitching duel at TIGER STADIUM.  The Detroit Tigers eventually emerged as
victors over the Chicago White Sox by the score of 3 to 1.

Morris contributed a very nicely pitched game.  He was stingy on the mound,
allowing just 4 hits and 1 walk in 7 and 2/3 innings.  Morris chalked up 8
strikeouts reducing his ERA from 3.35 to 2.84.  Morris got help from Willie
Hernandez who pitched great and earned his 7th save.  


BALTIMORE AT MINNESOTA

Mike Smithson tossed a complete game as the Minnesota Twins topped the
Baltimore Orioles by a score of 6 to 3 at METRODOME.

Minnesota took the lead for keeps in the 2nd inning scoring 2 runners on 2
hits.  The crucial at-bat was provided by Tim Teufel who excited the crowd
when he cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his 7th of the season).
Minnesota finished with 8 hits in the victory.  

Smithson(4-0) allowed 3 runs on the game. Storm Davis(2-2) was the loser.  He
gave up 5 runs and 6 hits in 6 and 1/3 innings.

In a close game the Oakland A's got by the Boston Red Sox by the score of 4 to

hits.  They ended up being the winning runs.  Jay Howell was perfect in
relief and gained credit for his 6th save.  

Chris Codiroli(4-2) went 8 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory. Bruce
Hurst(2-3) suffered the loss.  He pitched 6 innings giving up 6 hits and 4
walks.

partisan crowd when he lofted a three-run 'big-fly' (his 7th of the season).
Toronto kept the pressure on throughout the contest as they scored in 6
different innings.  

Luis Leal(2-1) picked up the victory, allowing 4 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings.
The loss was charged to Matt Young(2-2).  He was touched for 11 hits and 2
walks in 4 and 1/3 innings.

of 14 hits for the game.  

The victory was credited to Cowley(3-2) who went the distance, allowing 2
runs. The losing pitcher was Danny Jackson(0-3).  He surrendered 11 runs in 5
and 2/3 innings and saw his ERA increase from 5.13 to 7.31.

Dale Murphy connected with a 'big fly' and Rick Mahler pitched 10 strong
innings at FULTON CTY STADIUM as the Atlanta Braves won in dramatic fashion
coming back to beat the Montreal Expos in 14 innings by the count of 3 to
2.

Neither team scored in the first nine innings.  Atlanta came out on top in the
14th inning.  Murphy initiated the scoring when he hit a bases-empty home run
(his 6th of the season).  Bob Horner came next and he drew a walk.  Terry
Harper then doubled.  Glenn Hubbard came up and he hit a sacrifice fly
scoring one more run.  Rafael Ramirez stepped into the box and was walked
intentionally.  Bruce Benedict added his contribution to the rally and
doubled giving Atlanta the win and sending the home town fans into a frenzy.
Atlanta banged out 9 on the afternoon.  

Steve Shields(1-0) got the win allowing no runs in 1/3 of an inning. Gary
Lucas(0-2) took the loss in relief.  He was not very effective, surrendering
3 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings.  

With this win, Atlanta has a 8-15 record. They have been 4-6 lately.  With the
loss, Montreal has a record of 5-5 lately, 14-10 overall.

Dwight Gooden allowed Davey Johnson to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete
game at RIVERFRONT STADIUM as the New York Mets beat the Cincinnati Reds 6 to
1.

New York went ahead for good in the top of the 2nd inning scoring 2 runs using
2 hits.  Clint Hurdle led off and he drew a walk.  After an out was recorded,
Wally Backman stepped in and he doubled bringing in a run.  Rafael Santana
then stroked a base-hit scoring the final run of the inning.  That was all
the offense they were to need.  New York totaled 10 on the afternoon.

Gooden(4-2), allowing 1 run for the game, picked up the victory. Jay
Tibbs(0-5) was the losing pitcher.  He pitched 6 innings allowing 8 hits and
5 walks.

Shane Rawley pitched a complete game as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the
Houston Astros by a score of 6 to 1.

Philadelphia scored all of the necessary runs in the 5th inning as they scored
6 runs on 5 base hits.  The key at-bat was by Steve Jeltz who electrified
VETERANS STADIUM when he doubled scoring two baserunners.  Philadelphia and
Houston each finished the afternoon with 6 hits.  

The victory went to Rawley(3-2) who went the distance allowing 1 run. Nolan
Ryan(3-3) was hit with the loss.  Philadelphia scored big getting 6 runs off
him in 4 and 1/3 innings.  


LOS ANGELES AT PITTSBURGH

Third baseman Bill Madlock hit 2 doubles and had 2 RBI and Fernando Valenzuela
blanked Pittsburgh in a very well-pitched complete game as the Los Angeles
Dodgers outscored the Pittsburgh Pirates 5 to 0.

Valenzuela(4-1) looked very much in control throughout the day.  He allowed
just 6 hits and 4 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 2.75 to 2.20.  Los
Angeles had 13 hits for the afternoon.  

Rick Rhoden(0-5) was charged with the loss.  He gave up 8 hits and 2 walks in
6 and 1/3 innings.

In a thrilling finish the St. Louis Cardinals won in dramatic fashion coming
back to beat the San Francisco Giants in 10 innings by the count of 7 to
6.

Both teams were tied at 4 runs apiece after nine innings.  St. Louis was
victorious in the 10th inning.  Mike Jorgensen led off the inning for St.
Louis when he drew a walk.  Steve Braun stepped up next and he drew a walk.
Vince Coleman struck out, unable to help the rally.  Tommy Herr was up next
and he laced a base-knock to load the bases.  Willie McGee came to the plate
and doubled making St. Louis the victor and beginning a joyous home town
celebration.  A wild affair, this game saw the lead change 6 times.  

The winning pitcher was Ken Dayley(1-0) who allowed 1 run in 2/3 of an inning.
Frank Williams(0-1) absorbed the loss in relief.  He surrendered 3 runs and 2
hits in 1/3 of an inning.

Mike Easler collected 2 extra-base hits as the Boston Red Sox topped the
California Angels in 10 innings by a score of 6 to 4 at FENWAY PARK.

Both teams were tied at 4 runs apiece after nine innings.  Boston won it in
the 10th inning.  Rich Gedman got things going when he lined a one-base hit.
Tony Armas was a strikeout victim, unable to help out.  One out later, Glenn
Hoffman stepped in and he bombed a two-run dinger (his 2nd of the season)
making Boston the victors to the delight of the home town faithful.  For the
game Boston out-hit California 14 to 9.  

Bruce Kison(1-0) went 3 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Rafael
Lugo(3-1) was the losing pitcher in relief.  He pitched 2/3 of an inning
allowing 2 hits and no walks.


CHICAGO AT CLEVELAND

In a dramatic ending, the Cleveland Indians staged a comeback win over the
Chicago White Sox by the count of 4 to 3.

Cleveland scored the decisive runs in a big 9th inning scoring 3 runs on 5
hits.  After an out was recorded, Tony Bernazard opened up the rally as he
doubled.  Brett Butler came next and he tripled scoring a run.  Julio Franco
then doubled plating another run.  Brook Jacoby followed and he hit a single.
Andre Thornton stepped into the box and delivered a one-base hit making
Cleveland victorious to the delight of the the home town crowd.  Cleveland
had 11 hits for the afternoon.  

The win went to Jerry Reed(1-1) who allowed 1 run in 4 innings. Bob James(1-2)
was the loser in relief.  Reed and Franco were really whooping it up in the
clubhouse after the great come from behind victory.  As Pat Corrales noted,
'A win like this one can do wonders for a team's attitude.' Everyone shares
in the joy - the fans, the players - even you guys - it's better than winning
by a dozen runs!'

SEATTLE AT MILWAUKEE

walks in 6 and 1/3 innings improving his ERA from 4.18 to 3.67.  Overall
Seattle out-hit Milwaukee 11 to 5.  

Roy Thomas recorded the save, his 2nd. Ted Higuera(2-3) suffered the loss.  He
surrendered 4 runs and 9 hits in 7 and 1/3 innings.

Minnesota never recovered after New York took the lead in the 6th inning with
2 runs utilizing 4 base hits.  Henry Cotto started the inning off right when
he laced a single.  Willie Randolph stepped up next and he ripped a
base-knock.  Mattingly then lined a base-hit resulting in a run.  After an
out was recorded, Don Baylor came to the plate and doubled scoring the final
run of the inning.  New York finished with 11 hits in the victory.  

The victory went to Phil Niekro(3-1) who went 7 innings, allowing no runs.
Niekro got help from Dave Righetti who was credited with his 10th save.
Frank Viola(2-2) took the loss.  He allowed 8 hits and 2 walks in 8 and 1/3
innings.

Kirk Gibson blasted a homerun and had 3 RBI as the Detroit Tigers beat the

Detroit came up with 8 runs in the top of the 4th inning with the help of 6
hits.  The highlight belonged to Gibson who silenced ARLINGTON STADIUM as he
lost the ball over the fence for three runs (his 5th of the season).  Due to
a poorly pitched ballgame, scoring in 5 different innings was still not
enough for Texas to come away with the victory.  

The victory was credited to Frank Tanana(3-1) who went 6 and 1/3 innings,
allowing 8 runs. Willie Hernandez earned his 8th save.  Jeff Russell(1-3) was
given the loss.  Detroit scored big getting 7 runs off him in 3 and 1/3
innings.

The Oakland A's had an easy time of it at EXHIBITION STADIUM defeating the

Oakland jumped out to the early lead in the first inning when they tallied 3
runs on 3 hits.  That early scoring held up.  Neither team managed to score
after the 4th inning.  

Tim Birtsas(1-4) was the winner allowing 1 run in 7 and 1/3 innings. Jimmy
Key(3-1) was hit with the loss.  He gave up 6 runs and 11 hits in 9 innings.

BALTIMORE AT KANSAS CITY

In the bottom of the 3rd inning Kansas City scored 2 runs when they had 3 base
hits.  They ended up being the winning runs.  Baltimore had a chance to come
back in the 9th but they came up short.  

Bud Black(3-2) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 and 2/3 innings and
allowing 1 run. Black got help from Dan Quisenberry who earned his 6th save.
Dennis Martinez(3-2) was tagged with the loss.  He was hit hard and gave up 7
hits and 3 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings.

Los Angeles came up with the deciding runs in the top of the 8th inning when
they scored 4 runs on 4 hits.  The crucial at-bat was provided by Candy
Maldonado who deflated the mood of the partisan fans when he doubled plating
two runs.  Overall Los Angeles out-hit Chicago 16 to 6.  

Carlos Diaz(4-2) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 3 innings. Warren
Brusstar(2-1) was hit with the loss in relief.  He surrendered 4 runs in 2
innings and saw his ERA increase from 4.30 to 5.94.

At FENWAY PARK, the Boston fans witnessed a great pitcher's duel.  Oil Can
Boyd(3-2) finally bested his California opposite, Don Sutton(3-1), by the
score of 2 to 1.

Boston claimed the early lead in the first inning plating an isolated run
using 3 hits.  California threatened in the 9th but their rally came up
short.  

Boyd got relief help from Steve Crawford who gained credit for his 3rd save.
The losing pitcher was Sutton.  He was stingy with the baserunners, allowing
just 5 hits and no walks in 7 innings.

Gene Mauch was reflective after the loss, 'We should have won this one, we
just made one too many mistakes.  Son-of-a-gun, that added a couple more
white hairs on this noggin of mine.'

Oscar Gamble touched them all at MUNICIPAL STADIUM as the Chicago White Sox
staged a comeback win over the Cleveland Indians by the count of 5 to

Chicago had the winning rally in the top of the 9th inning scoring 3 runs on 3
hits.  Gamble initiated the scoring when he ripping a solo home run (his 1st
of the season).  Ron Kittle was next and he singled.  Nichols stole second
with some aggressive base running.  Luis Salazar stepped in and he blasted a
two-run home run (his 1st of the season).  Dan Spillner(2-1) was helped out
by Bob James who pitched a perfect ninth and recorded his 4th save.  

Keith Creel(0-1) was the loser in relief.  He allowed 2 hits and no walks in 1
inning.  Tony LaRussa was all smiles after the game, 'To pull a game out in
your last at bats, is a beautiful feeling - and did you see how quiet it got
out there? You could have heard a pin drop when we took the lead.  But, hey,
that's what makes baseball so great - as the great sage Yogi Berra says,
'it's not over 'til its over.'

2/3 innings.  Burris racked up 7 strikeouts seeing his ERA drop from 4.17 to
3.53.  Both teams totaled 8 on the afternoon.  

Burris got help from Bob Gibson who earned his 2nd save.  Bill Swift(0-4) took
the loss.  He pitched 5 and 1/3 innings giving up 7 hits and 1 walk.

Neither team managed to score after the 3rd inning.

inning.  Willie Hernandez, after tossing a perfect ninth, was credited with
his 9th save.  

The win went to Dan Petry(3-2) who allowed no runs in 6 and 2/3 innings.
Dickie Noles(1-2) was the losing pitcher.  With the win, Detroit continued
their winning ways; their streak now stands at 6 games and counting.

hard fought contest.

Jim Clancy(3-1) had a fairly solid outing.  He went 5 innings surrendering 5
hits and 2 walks.  Oakland had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came
up short.  

Tom Henke was credited with his 9th save.  Bill Krueger(3-2) was charged with
the loss.  He was touched for 11 hits and 4 walks in 8 innings.  

'Anytime you lose it hurts,' said Jackie Moore 'but it's losing the close ones
that really hurt.'

BALTIMORE AT KANSAS CITY

Scott McGregor(3-2) pitched a solid game.  He surrendered 4 hits and 3 walks
in 6 and 2/3 innings reducing his ERA from 4.32 to 4.05.  Both teams ended up
with 7 on the night.  

McGregor got help from Nate Snell who was credited with his 2nd save.  Charlie
Leibrandt(0-4) ended up with the loss.  It was a tough loss for him as he did
not allow an earned run in his 1 and 2/3 innings of work.

So...confession time. I've played a lot of Strat, and there are always some strange outcomes, and that's what makes it interesting. However, in my play testing of this season, there were A LOT of strange outcomes, and most are on the pitching side. I expect we'll end up with some guys around 50 home runs, which will be a huge departure from the real season, but the pitching is going to be really skewed this season, and the reason is...the season I have has short rosters. I didn't realize it initially. It wasn't until after 1985 was chosen, and I play tested a few times that I noticed it. In essence, most teams have very few arms in the pen, so ones they do have will be overused.

A great example of this is KC. They are struggling, and I expect they will continue to do so, mostly because they only have 8 pitchers on the team. With a mostly 5 man rotation and fatigue, from one game to the next the options in the pen are really small. I've also seen in my play testing relievers approach 20 wins. I've tried to limit the relievers appearances by setting up the bullpen strategies for all the teams, but there's only so much I can do, when I'm simming all the games.

I probably should have turned off injuries so they would shorten team options even more, but that is a significant variable that I like to leave in place. I hope this doesn't spoil anyone's interest.

I'll be posting team stats this weekend, and when I post, I'll see about providing some comment on the season so far. Plus I don't know if you guys enjoy the play by play games, or if you just like the newspaper recaps. Let me know, and I'll try to get some play by play games posted periodically.

8th of the season) in the 3rd inning and stroked a base-hit in the 8th
inning.  St. Louis made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push
the needed runs across.  

The win was credited to Jerry Reuss(2-1) who went 7 and 1/3 innings allowing 1
run. Ken Howell gained credit for his 4th save.  Danny Cox(2-2) was the
loser.  He served up 3 gopher balls in 8 innings.  

The Los Angeles ballclub's record now stands at a division leading 18-10.
With the loss, St. Louis has a record of 6-4 lately, 13-13 overall.

Dan Schatzeder(2-2) had a solid outing for Montreal.  He went 5 and 2/3
innings surrendering 3 hits and 3 walks.  Montreal had only 5 hits for the
afternoon.  

Schatzeder got help from Bert Roberge who was credited with his 1st save.  Bob
Knepper(2-3) was hit with the loss.  He gave up 5 hits and no walks in 5
innings.

Dale Murphy slammed a homerun as the Atlanta Braves defeated the New York Mets
by the score of 9 to 2 at SHEA STADIUM.

Atlanta came through with the game-winning runs in the top of the 8th inning
when they tallied 5 runs on 4 hits.  The crucial at-bat was provided by
Rafael Ramirez who silenced the stadium when he lofted a three-run bomb (his
1st of the season).  Overall Atlanta out-hit New York 11 to 8.  

Gene Garber(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 4 innings. Roger
McDowell(3-1) was tagged with the loss in relief.  He was knocked around,
surrendering 5 runs in 2 innings.

Eddie Milner had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Cincinnati Reds beat the
Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 4 to 3.

Cincinnati had 2 runs cross the plate in the top of the 4th inning with the
help of 4 hits.  The highlight belonged to Milner who deflated the mood of
the partisan fans when he slapped a single plating two runs.  For the game
Cincinnati out-hit Philadelphia 13 to 7.  

Tom Browning(3-3) got the win allowing 1 run in 7 innings. Ted Power recorded
his 6th save.  John Denny(1-5) took the loss.  He allowed a few too many
baserunners giving up 12 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings.  


PITTSBURGH AT SAN DIEGO

Lamarr Hoyt went 9 strong innings and Graig Nettles had 4 hits and 2 RBI as
the San Diego Padres man-handled the Pittsburgh Pirates - the final score was
14 to 1.

It was a good day for San Diego thanks to Nettles.  He delivered a single in
the 4th inning, cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his 2nd of the
season) in the 5th inning, slapped a base-hit in the 6th inning and doubled
in the 8th inning.  San Diego bats were very productive in the 3rd inning
when they had 4 runs on 6 hits and the 4th inning which saw them plate 4 runs
on 5 hits.  San Diego had 26 hits for the afternoon.  

Hoyt(3-1) lasted until the end allowing 1 run for the win. Rick Reuschel(3-2)
was given the loss.  He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 8 runs in 3
and 1/3 innings.  

'He was moving it around and spotting it very well.' Chuck Tanner said.  Hoyt
pitched a great game. He deserves all the credit.'

CHICAGO AT SAN FRANCISCO

8,897 fans watched an exciting game at CANDLESTICK PARK.  The San Francisco
Giants topped the Chicago Cubs by the slimmest of margins, 3 to 2.

Chicago lost it in the 8th inning when San Francisco did all their damage with
3 runs on 3 hits.  After an out was recorded, Jose Uribe got things rolling
when he laced a one-base hit.  Ron Roenicke came to the plate and ripped a
base-knock.  David Green then tripled scoring two teammates.  Brad Wellman
was up next and he reached on an error scoring the final run of the inning.
Both teams finished the game with 6 hits.

The win went to Dave Lapoint(2-4) who allowed 2 runs in 8 innings. Greg Minton
was credited with his 1st save. Lee Smith(0-1) suffered the loss in relief.
He pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up 3 hits and no walks.

A few days back I missed the fact the AL had a couple of days with no games. So the newspaper postings are off on the date. I'm going to slow down here and get back in balance. Sorry about the confusion - the game jumps to the next scheduled game, not an empty day in the calendar. I'll try to pay more attention in the future.

I love seeing some of the day to day stuff. I played SOM growing up, have my version 1, Apple Computer game discs somewhere. My grandma used to send me box scores and stats every week from her Atlanta newspaper because they had better stats than I had in Minot growing up. Gotta love Grandmas. I wouldn't expect you to post every single day though. It's one of my very favorite seasons of baseball. Also love '86. I played the crap out of those cards. Skipped '87, then loved '88 after LA won it all. Man.....what a trip down memory lane.

Tom Niedenfuer delivered 3 solid innings as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated
the St. Louis Cardinals by the score of 11 to 2 at DODGER STADIUM.

Pedro Guerrero made sure the Los Angeles fans enjoyed themselves.  He laced a
base-knock which plated a run in the 1st inning, laced a one-base hit
knocking in a run in the 2nd inning and clubbed a three-run home run (his 9th
of the season) in the 8th inning.  For the game Los Angeles out-hit St. Louis
11 to 7.  

Rick Honeycutt(1-4) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs in 6 innings.
Honeycutt got help from Niedenfuer who earned his 2nd save.  Joaquin
Andujar(4-1) was the loser.  


PITTSBURGH AT SAN DIEGO

Terry Kennedy had 3 base hits and 2 RBI at JACK MURPHY STADIUM where the San
Diego Padres beat the Pittsburgh Pirates in 10 innings 6 to 5.

The game was deadlocked at 5 after nine full innings.  San Diego won it in the
10th inning.  Steve Garvey banged out a single.  Graig Nettles followed, but
he was set down on strikes.  Bobby Brown then drew a walk.  One out later,
Kevin McReynolds came to the plate and was walked intentionally to load the
bases.  Garry Templeton stepped into the box and slapped a single resulting
in an exciting win for San Diego and a wild post-game celebration by the home
town fans.  Overall San Diego out-hit Pittsburgh 15 to 9.  

Craig Lefferts(3-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 inning. The losing
pitcher was Don Robinson(1-1) in relief.  He allowed 4 hits and 2 walks in 1
and 2/3 innings.

Alex Trevino rocketed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI at CANDLESTICK PARK where the

The score was knotted at 8 after nine innings.  San Francisco ended up winning
it in the 13th inning.  After two outs Chili Davis delivered a single.
Trevino was next and he hit a single, and an error was also committed.  Mark
Davis then lined a one-base hit giving San Francisco the victory and sending
the 8,993 home-town fans home happy.  This was the kind of game that many
fans love as the lead changed hands 5 times.  

Frank Williams(1-1) allowed no runs in 2 innings, and picked up the victory.
Rick Sutcliffe(2-3) was given the loss in relief.  He gave up 3 hits and no
walks in 2/3 of an inning.
