Womanly ideal of Roosevelt's heyday.
The first question would be...which Roosevelt? Teddy or Franklin? First thought would be FDR, but did he really have a heyday? More of a heydecade. When I think of womanly ideal, I think of Marilyn Monroe or Jane Russell, but those are a little too late for Roosevelt's time. Also, according to enigma, we are looking for a concept, not a particular woman. What was the ideal woman in the 30's-40's? The early 1900's?

So, we have baseball-related answers for exactly half of the 14 clues... and seem to be "striking out" with the rest.
Perhaps this means that there is a second theme buried in there -- that maybe the other 7 clues are in totally different category, somehow? Plus, the X-and-O patterns are still wholly mysterious, as nearly as I can tell. Maybe that's a clue to which "set" each clue belongs to? Or some kind of device to use for ordering things properly? Again, just tosing stuff out, hoping I stumble onto something that helps someone else... |

I am still stumped here too, and what is really getting to me is that every time I go back and try to use the XO clues I am struck by the fact that there is not a 1 to 1 ratio between clues and kiss kiss patterns. There is a kiss kiss pattern in between each clue, but there is not one at the end. I have no idea what that tells us but it is bugging the hell out of me. |

Norman's bathroom scene only slightly more shocking than one here.
Could this possibly be...Kirby Puckett? Me being right would be slightly more shocking than either.

Yes, definitely a memorable bathroom scene, but where is the tie in? No Glenn, Close, Douglas, Forest or Galagher in the BBHoF.
Perhaps Rabbit Maranville!!

Not that clever, I'm afraid.
The tie in has to do with Norman Bates, and the general setting. The "shocking" scene in the movie you're looking for is not shocking for the same reason as the shower scene from Psycho. (though from what I've heard, it may have been scarring to some nonetheless) Last edited by enigma : 11-10-2004 at 05:27 PM. |

If Schmidt is right, then we have the following left (with ideas about them tossed out):
Golden Gate next for Donald? Golden Gate--possible San Francisco reference. Donald--Trump? Duck? The Apprentice? If he could only get his hands on the oil money... Personified by Music Joe Dimaggio? from Mrs. Robinson and Joltin' Joe Dimaggio After killing him, the illegitimates might write this. Reference to a will. Perhaps a suicide note? Womanly ideal of Roosevelt's heyday. -- From Teddy Roosevelt's time. |

Who or what are the illegitimates? This seems to be a key word here. I also wonder who "him" refers to - I think if we piece that together it might be part of the clue. Not much else to go on though.

Dola - the personified/music clue. I wonder if we can read anything into "Music" being capitalized?

VPI, you need to sleep more, or take cooking lessons.
You're knowledge of useless trivial stuff (and useful programming stuff) is staggering. I bow to your intellect. Good job!

Here is a list of people who are eligible for the HOF ballot in the next several years...
I would say the definites on the list are: Wade Boggs Tony Gwynn Mark McGwire Cal Ripken Rickey Henderson However, if anyone wants to make an argument for Jeff Blauser or Randy Velarde, I'm all ears. |

After killing him, the illegitimates might write this
Perhaps referring to Ken Jennings's reign over Jeopardy...all of the 'illegitimate' (i.e. unworthy) contenders to his run would write R.I.P. Ken = Cal Ripken Last edited by VPI97 : 11-12-2004 at 11:53 AM. |

Very nice - all of the interpretations of the clues are correct. I was going for something a bit different with the Ripken clue though:
"They killed Kenny...you bastards!!" (RedKingGold actually made a critical connection in another thread) Now - the trick is to find what the players represent (or, conversely, what represents the players) and to find out what purpose the lovey dovey lines serve. This is where there is a little room for misinterpretation. Stick with the obvious as much as possible. |

Haven't looked anything up, but what about awards - Cy Youngs, Triple Crown winners, MVP's, World Series wins/appearances?
Nicknames?

I know I've brought it up multiple times before, but, remember when looking at the XXO binary stuff... there is not a 1 to 1 correlation between hall of fame names and XXO binary clues. there is 1 more name than there is binary set. That leads me to believe it's not based on something as simple as correlating binary # to type of award or anything else that would be natural to shoot for here |

Yes, you've mentioned it multiple times, and I've forgotten it multiple times.
Thanks for the reminder. Again.

I'm sure when the puzzle is figured out it'll be obvious that I got this 1 to 1 thing stuck in my head and it caused us all to miss something obvious |
