KEY FREE AGENTS/RESTRICTED PLAYERS FROM MY TEAM
K Dexter Everett is a two-time all-pro with 88/94 ratings, but he wants an average of nearly $6.5M per year. I doubt I'll be able to afford that much of a cap hit.
TE Kenny Malfara is out the door, as Gilbert Woodyard is pretty much just as good, and cheaper.
RG Nick Weber had a pretty solid year, and wants a decent-sized contract for the next 5 seasons. He may or may not be back.
LDE Cox isn't looking good after his injury, and backup Doug Cochrane is a FA He'd come cheap if I decide to stick with him.
LDT Dixon Mahoney keeps on making plays, and is now a mentor. His salary request is fairly modest (around $7M per year). He'll probably get an offer from me.
SLB Kendrick O' Neal will be allowed to go elsewhere, as 3rd-year man Chester Adderley looks ready to step in and start now.
RCB Devin Withers is an RFA. He gets re-signed after his very good year last year.

COMMENTS
This was a VERY frustrating season. Key defensive injuries early in the season really hurt us in what appeared to be our best chance to win it all so far. We will almost definitely lose some key pieces of the puzzle to free agency after this year, as Antel, Henry, Mayes, Hernandez, Tamm and Pierre are all FA-eligible, among others.

The Cardinals defeat the Panthers 23-20 as Corey Henson throws for 296 yards. J.T. Bryant catches 6 passes for 101 yards.

The Packers spank the Cowboys 34-6 in Green Bay. Scottie Peters throws fro 223 yards on the day.

The Jets win 34-24 at Houston as Perry Sutton throws for 224 yards.

I'm going to start the season with Hardy Tamm at QB, but this could well be a year of transition. 3rd-year man Malcolm Rasberry has improved each season, and if Tamm falters or we find ourselves out of the playoff picture, Rasberry will step in.

POWER RATING: 74. 2nd-best in NFC, behind Seattle (77).
ROSTER: 96. Baltimore is best.



DIVISION RIVALS

(LAST YEAR'S RECORD IN PARENTHESIS)

CAROLINA (11-4-1)--They look pretty solid on both sides of the ball, but not spectacular either. Due mainly to injuries, they'll have three new starters on the o-line in the first part of the season. If they can navigate the early season decently, they should have a shot at another Division Title.

NEW ORLEANS (5-11)--The Aints still look like the worst team in the NFC South.. Their defense is young and improving, though. However, they only have one offensive starter rated 60, or higher--a 60/60 RT. After him, the next-best offensive starter is their 51/53 TE. They're going to have a hard time scoring.

TAMPA BAY (7-9)--As long as Jason Raymond is in Tampa (and his current contract is for 6 more years), the Bucs will be mediocre at worst. He's got a decent-looking rookie wide receiver this year in 1(1) pick Dan Carlisle. Their o-line is adequate. Defensively, they have two star players at LCB and LDT, but then are mediocre or worse elsewhere. Could challenge for a wild-card spot.

We go on the road and jump out to a 20-0 halftime lead behind 2 Tamm TD passes and 2 Matsko FG's, and hang on for the 20-10 win as backup RB Casey Madison rushes for 135 yards due to a Kenyon Daniels injury. Tamm is 21 for 31 for 216 yards with 2 TD's and 0 INT's on the day.

Green Bay (11-5) at Carolina (11-5) (-5)

The Panthers advance 22-10 as J.J. Robinson throws for 199 yards.

New England (8-8) at Buffalo (9-7) (-2)

Courtney Reese throws for 289, and Toby Carlisle rushes for 103, as the Bills move on 16-13.

New Jersey (8-8) (-1) at Indianapolis (9-7)

J.J. Robinson brings his "A" game today: 29 for 36 for 319 yards with 4 TD's and 1 INT. Wesley Strickland catches *15* passes for 191 yards and 3 TD's, and the Panthers roll 28-14.

The Colt defense again holds a playoff opponent under 10 points, this time in a pretty big 17-3 upset. Oliver Bush racks up 100 more yards on the day.

Conference Finals

CAROLINA (13-5) AT DETROIT (14-3) (-4)

Devin Branch is looking unstoppable right now. He was 32 for 32 for 254 yards with 2 Td's and 0 INT's in a 34-0 Lion shellacking of the Panthers. This guy is a 6th-year man. He was UNDRAFTED in 2010, picked up by Oakland but didn't play a signle snap that year. In 2011, the Raiders cut him and the Panthers signed him after a series of QB injuries. He got 8 starts that year, performing pretty well. Their starter returned for 2012, but by 2013, he had a full-time job. He was the most dominant passer in the league this year: 343 for 502 (68.3%), 4,380 yards, 27 TD's, 11 INT's, 104.1 passer rating.



INDIANAPOLIS (11-7) AT PITTSBURGH (11-6) (-4)

Hunsinger carries for 115 yards on 30 carries, and the Steelers advance to the big game for the first time ever with a 23-17 win.

Well, I really can't complain all that much about this season. We made the playoffs, got our future QB a couple of starts, won a playoff game on the road, and were eliminated by the eventual champs--champs who outscored their playoff opponents by a 93-24 count in three playoff games. There may be financial and cap issues looming next year, though.

All four staff members' contracts run out this year, and not surprisingly, three of the four (DC/OC/Sct) want more money than my owner is allowing me to offer. Nice! Of course, there's a pretty big shift happening in staff salaries across the league due to having applied 5.1a during an existing career. J.J. Robinson, CAR, (59/59,14): (I really hate this guy.) 4(16) pick by SF in dispersal draft. 10 years as starter for the Niners. Signed with Carolina in '14, and has led them to back-to-back division titles over me. Under contract with Panthers through 2018.

Devin Branch, DET, (58/58,7): Undrafted free agent in 2010. Signed by Oakland, but never played a snap in regular season for them. Released in 2011, picked up by Detroit and got 8 starts due to injuries. 2 starts in 2012, then full-time starter in 2013. MVP/OPOY/1st-Team QB in 2015. Signed with Detroit through 2018.

NEW ORLEANS (7-9)--Their young defense continues to improve, but the offense starts no one rated 60 or better.

TAMPA BAY (10-6))--They're going to have no running game to speak of, but Jason Raymond is one of the best QB's in the business, and he has two good young targets, a TE and FL. On defense, they may be weak agaisnt the pass, as they'll start THREE rookies in the secondary.

With all of the draft pick trading, I was able to free up some cap room in late free agency--enough to sign a mediocre left tackle. LT Kendall Lindsay (49/51) signs a modest 2-year deal. He's a 6th-year man who has played for New England and Denver. With Roy Adderley not looking that impressive coming out of camp, it looks like Lindsay will start at LT for us.



Heh. 2nd-round pick FL Tony Davison isn't likely to make the team, while 6th-round pick FL Mickey Devine gets the big boost and will be our 3rd wide receiver. Also of note after camp is that it looks like Hardy Tamm's mentoring has cost him a job. Randall Barker is now 50/50, and Malcolm Rasberry is 47/58.

Gilbert Boyer catches 6 TD passes to give him 29 for his career, which surpasses Darnell Keys's previous team mark of 25.
Devin Withers picks off 6 more passes, giving him 21 for his career, passing Kris Colon's team record.


COMMENTS
Well, it looks like we've found our QB! Randall Barker has a stellar season, throwing for over 3,800 yards with 27 TD's and only 8 INT's. Seattle, who we spanked 31-6, also went 13-3, and Detroit won their division once again with a 10-6 mark. Those two teams appear to be our primary obstacles to getting to the Front Office Bowl. Defending Champion Kansas City looks poised to make a run at another title. The injury to Gus Lang was a real bummer. He was on his way to an outstanding season. He had 47 catches, 696 yards, and 7 Td's in 7 1/2 games played.

This one is a ton closer than the regular season battle, but the final outcome is the same. Barker throws for 198 yards and 2 TD's, and the defense comes up with 5 sacks and an interception en route to a 26-21 win.

RETIREMENTS

DT Dixon Mahoney hangs 'em up after 13 years in the league.Mahoney is the last of the original Falcons on the squad. He was signed as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2005, rated only 19/37 at the time, but he quickly earned a starting spot with a jump to 22/47 in his first training camp. He lead the teams in tackles as a rookie, and has never relinquished the team lead in tackles throughout his career. He suffered major injuries in 2012 and 2014 that limited him to a total of 4 games played in those two years, but bounced back to play 44 games in his final three seasons. He finishes his career with 653 tackles, 243 assists, 41.5 sacks, 24 blocks, 129 QB hurries, and a career 10.9 TkPct. He retires as the team career leader in tackles, sacks, and games started (168). Only his team sack record looks to be challenged any time in the next several seasons. Mahoney was defensive rookie of the year in 2005, and was a first-team All Pro in 2009.

Well, I haven't gone after any top-tier free agents yet, but I messed around with it in a year after I lost money, and I was not able to offer as much bonus money as one guy wanted. Also, the later years of long-term contracts to star-caliber players can be problematic if you're not doing well financially. Also, if you push the envelope too hard and end up losing a ton, the ability to sign a number of the best FA's will be lost.

QB Hardy Tamm--I'd love to keep him around as a backup and mentor if I can afford him, but I doubt I can.

SE Wes Proctor--RFA--Former 7th-rounder really stepped it up late last season. If Farrell drops, Proctor might start this year.

LDE Deron Mirkovich--RFA--22 sacks over the past two seasons. He's looking for a big contract. It will be tough, but I really want to keep him.

RDT Roy Novack--Despite his big ratings drop, he looks like he can still be a decent player, and he'll come fairly cheaply. I'll pursue him.

MLB O.J. Barnhill--I'd like to keep him, but it is gonna cost me to do so.

LCB Colin Chryplewicz--With four other solid or better CB's on the roster, he's fairly expendable, even though I could keep him around pretty cheaply. We'll see.

LT Roy Adderley--His ratings continue to drop. He's gone.


I make a trade, sending Malcolm Rasberry and our 1(32) pick this year over to Houston for ILB Clifton Shaw, their first round pick next year, and their 2nd round pick in 2020. Shaw is a third-year man who has 174 tackles in the two previous seasons. This move makes it unnecessary for me to have to re-sign Barnhill, and therefore frees up a good bit of cap room to sign the other FA's that I need/want.


SIGNINGS

QB Hardy Tamm re-signs for two more years as a mentor/backup.

RDT Roy Novack signs a deal that will keep him here for 3 more years.

I also sign a new player, LDT Preston Rabe (4.8, 5yrs/$35.25M)--He was 2nd-Team All Pro last year for Indianapolis with 57 tackles and 7 sacks. His contract does not have a large bonus, so he's not necessarily a long-term solution. I won't hesitate to cut or trade him if something better comes along in a year or two, but he's the starter for now.

LCB Colin Chryplewicz signs pretty cheaply, and with the extra cap room, why not?

SE Wes Proctor signs a modest 3-year deal.

We sign a few backups and 1st-year guys in late free agency. One signing is worth mentioning, as TE Kenny Malfara comes back to Atlanta as a mentor and backup TE. He still looks like he could be a pretty decent player. He caught 76 passes and was a first-team All Pro in 2016 for Baltimore.

CAROLINA 5-11)--The Panthers have moved on. QB J.J. Robinson, fading in his 16th year, was released. Their new QB is Will Dawson, a former 2nd-round pick by us who we cut in 2016. he doesn't look that impressive still. He's got a good offensive line and good receivers, though, so I wouldn't be surprise to see him put up pretty solid numbers. Their defense, however, is still very suspect.

NEW ORLEANS (9-7)--The Saints look like they'll continue to improve, and challenge once again for a playoff spot. They've signed QB Bucky Hartman through 2020, and have good ol' Crime Dog Rosser as their backup.

TAMPA BAY (7-9)--Jason Raymond has very little supporting case on offense. The Bucs are VERY young offensively: Raymond's the only guy with >4 years experience, and 5 rookies will start.
