Ryan Flaherty receives $9,243,750
Jaff Decker receives $6,000,000
Rafael Ortega receives $7,500,000
Stuart Schilder receives $2,750,000
Ricardo Engeitado receives $7,170,000
Rudy Brown receives $3,850,500
Dan Morgan receives $2,011,500
Ken James receives $750,000
Nolan Arenado receives $950,000

I offer Joe Girardi a 5 year extension with a $200,000 a year raise and he signs it.

In Free Agency, I try to go after some guys, but the damn owner is blocking me. I have no budget room for Year 2 (2019 Season).

I trade C Josh Thole to Colorado for a SP prospect. That clears up a few million.

I trade RF Jaff Decker, MR Phillippe Aumont and SP Raudel Lazo to the Cardinals for a few bats and soda for my machines. That freed up more than $10 million from the 2019 Season.

I went after SP Liam Hendricks and lost to the LA Dodgers. No other SP is worth going after. The rest (who were already too expensive for me anyway) are signed.

Spring Training

Vinnie Pestano will be out for a month, but will be back for the regular season.

Johnny Venters is out for 7 months. Going to have to go most (if not all) of the year without one of my best relievers.

Preseason Prediction: 96-66, winning the East comfortably again. Our owner expects use to win it all again.

Our payroll is 14th highest.

I trade SP Barret Loux to the Detroit Tigers for 27 year old LF Gabriel Melendez. and 23 year old MR prospect Kelly McMillan. Melendez is a stolen base machine as he stole 50 bases last season and only got caught 8 times. In the last 3 seasons he has stolen 148 bases and got caught 30 times. He's not the best hitter (~.250), but if half the time he gets a single, he effectively turns it into a double*, that's good for me. He also walks a decent amount of the time.

I am way overloaded at the MR position. A few of them who are more than capable of playing in the majors will have to sit in the minors. I tried trading a few of them but no one's biting.

* - Dunno what advanced baseball stats would say about that argument....

SP Matt Moore signs a 5 year, $52 million extension that will keep him signed through the 2024 season. He hasn't been the best pitcher for me, but he hasn't been terrible. A nice, steady SP signed for ~ $10mil a year seems right.

I give Matt Moore an extension and he proceeds to stink up the joint. 0-2, 8.46 ERA. Hellickson is 3-2, 4.50 ERA. Dylan Bundy is 2-1, 4.96 ERA. Hoping Moore is just in a slump.

Aaron Sanchez, on the other hand, is 3-0 with a 2.20 ERA. Tyrell Jenkins is 3-0 with a 2.05 ERA.

Halfway through the last series, I shook things up a bit. I moved RF Bill Horton and CF Mikie Mahtook to the minors and brought up RF William Herring and RF Oscar Moriondo. Moriondo is only 22 years old but has outplayed the competition at every level so far. Now it's time to see what the kid's got.

I'm also this close to trading Matt Moore and Jeremy Hellickson. Dylan Bundy has turned it around some and is now 5-2 with an ERA of 3.63. Moore's ERA is still north of 7 and has a 1-3 record. Hellickson 4-4, 4.70 ERA.

I was expecting Moore to stay at around 3.50 ERA. That's why I gave him an extension. I have been close to trading Hellickson several times over the last 2 seasons.

The only thing stopping me is the utter lack of anyone to replace them with. I have a few relievers with the stamina to be starters, but they all only have 2 pitches.

June 6: 1-2 Loss
June 7: 2-4 Loss

SP Jeremy Hellickson, and a few prospects, are traded to the Minnesota Twins for 21 year old SP prospect John Liberto. Mostly a salary dump in order to free room so I that I can either go after someone in free agency, or so that I can trade for a more expensive player soon. However, as far as prospects go, Liberto looks real good.

3 Game Series vs. Kansas City Royals
June 8: 2-3 Loss (Stuart Schilder's first start is a loss, but he didn't do badly. In fact, it was a complete game.)

June 15: 5-0 Win (Matt Moore, you've saved your job for now)
June 16: 4-1 Win
June 17: 16-7 Win

For the OOTP veterans out there, I have Setting Lineups/Depth/Pitching Staff under manager options set to J.Girardi (Computer). If I use Player Strategy for a few players, do my setting stay in place, or does the AI override them?

Record: 41-28, .594, 2nd in AL East, 0.5 Games Behind NY Yankees

22 year old Moriondo has been underwhelming and I may have brought him up a year or two too soon. But, he's still doing better than the guy he replaced.

Joe Mahoney is nearing the end of his contract. He's signed through 2019, and he signed a contract that was very favorable to me. Only $6.6mil per year. Now, it's time for him to get paid. And I'm not sure I can be that team to pay him. Right now, he's asking $23mil a year.

I offer him $20mil a year for 7 years, with a bump to $22mil in years 6 and 7. The contract would start in 2020. Right now, my salary obligation for 2020 is $71 mil, which gives me a lot of room, but that's also without Ryan Flaherty, Rafael Ortega, Johnny Venters. Wilson Ramos and Rudy Brown (and of course, Mahoney) being counted against it. Venters has a major injury and is up there in age, so he probably won't still be around in 2020. But Flaherty is a solid player that will cost me ~$10 mil a year, Ortega is a solid and will cost me $10mil. Brown is a damn good closer and will cost me to keep him.

With the contract to Mahoney, it's going to be tough keeping this team together.

I send Oscar Moriondo back down. I think I brought him up a bit too early. He'll get another shot next year. I bring Raffaele Giacomini up. Problem is, he's a first baseman, and I have no need for that at all. He can play LF and CF....barely. But I figure I'll give him a shot. I change his position to LF and we'll see what happens.

I also bring up SP Vladimir De La Cruz to fill in for a few weeks for Moore.

Aaron Sanchez and Joe Mahoney are the All-Stars from Baltimore this year. This biggest difference between this team and the team from the past 2 seasons is bullpen ERA. We are still producing....almost as much as we have in the past. Starters are around where they usually are (middle of the league in ERA), but my top 3-4 bullpen is now on the same level as my starters (ranked in the 7-8 area).

MR Vinnie Pestano - Usually gives up a battling average of near .200, this year he is at ~.250 and his ERA is a little more then 1 full ER above last year (2.20 vs. 3.25), his WHIP is 0.20 higher. But even with his drop off, he's been better than most of the rest of my bullpen. Every MR not names Jahagir Hussain is doing worse. Hussain has been much better than last season and is my best MR right now.

I send Chris Foster and Bartolo Ramirez down and bring up Curt Noftall and Claudia Rosa to give them a shot.

Here I was thinking I was deep at MR and suddenly it's a problem.

I trade RF Bill Horton and CF James Baldwin to the Chicago Cubs for MR Anthony Zych and SP Taylore Cherry

I have to bring Moriondo and Mahtook back up, but even though they weren't doing too well, they were still outperforming Baldwin or Horton.

Girardi has taken Schilder out of the starting rotation and put Zych in. We'll see how that goes. Schilder got off to a good start, but has fallen to 5-10 (2-8 as a starter) with an ERA of 4.64 (3.23 before he became starter).

We have fallen to 3rd place in the division for the first time in a long time.

3 Game Series vs Texas Rangers

Ryan Flaherty tells me that he is surprised that he hasn't been offered an extension. Maybe because I think $10 mil a year is too much for someone batting .250? (Last year, he was batting .284). He does walk a lot, though....

And he balked. I even went as high as $11 mil a year for 4 years. He demanded ~$13mil and a longer deal. Oh well.

In other news, the game tells me that Taylore Cherry is ready to come up. Sure, why not. Let's give the guy a chance.

3 Game Series at Cincinnati Reds
Aug 24: 12-5 Win
Aug 25: 5-4 Win
Aug 26: 0-1 Loss

3 Game Series at Oakland A's

Unless the Yankees collapsed, we're not going to win the division. We are still in the hunt for a wildcard spot, though.

Oct 5 at NY: 6-8 Loss
Oct 7 at BAL: 8-7 Win (Mario Peret hits for the cycle)
Oct 8 at BAL: 3-2 Win (14)

LOL, we still knock off the Yankees in the playoffs.

And we lose Taylore Cherry for 12 months. Ugh....

ALCS vs Detroit Tigers
Oct 12 at BAL: 3-8 Loss
Oct 13 at BAL: 4-11 Loss
Oct 15 at DET: 9-10 Loss
Oct 16 at DET: 11-7 Win

At least we put up a fight and got to the ALCS (and ended the Yankees' season again).

The Detroit Tigers go on to get swept by the LA Dodgers in the World Series.

Breaking News - For the 2019 Season, Major League Baseball is expanding by 2 teams. The Indianapolis Miracle will be joining the AL and the Columbus Servals will be the new NL team.

Salary Arbitration
Dan Morgan gets $2.4mill
Tyrell Jenkins gets $4.5mil
Ryan Gennett gets $787,500
Mario Peret gets $7.2mil
Chris Foster gets $2mil
Ken James gets $850,000
Nolan Arenado gets $1.1mil
Rudy Brown gets $4.98mil
Nicky Delmonico gets $6.875mil
Ricardo Engeitado gets $9.56mil
Stuart Schilder gets $.32mil
Rafeal Ortega gets $10.625mil
Curt Noftall gets $750,000
Mikie Mahtook gets $1.7mil
Anthony Zych gets $1mil

In the expansion draft, Rafael Ortega is taken by the Miracle and Ryan Gennett is taken by the Servals. Orgeta batted over .300 for me but missed the playoffs due to injury. I can't say I'm entirely disappointed to see Ortega's salary go (or else I would have protected him), though. Moriondo really picked up his game late in the year and could replace most of his offensive production at a very small fraction of the price, as long as he plays all year the way he did in the last month or 2.

Same story as every year. Lots of runs scored, lots of runs given up.

I can't even sign players to extensions right now. I tried to give Zych a 4 year extension of $2.8mil a year and the owner blocked it. Year 2 was ~$2mil over.

Matt Moore is off to another shitty start. 0-2, 8.27 ERA in 3 starts.

The team has come together. 3 batters over .300 with Peret right there at .294. Engeitado is batting .354 w/ 27 HR. He's out-hitting Joe Mahoney (.302 w/ 19 HR)

Ross Thompson has had a bit of a drop off from last year. That injury may have done some long lasting damage.

Oscar Moriondo is doing really well this year. .312 AVG, up by .50 from last year.

2 World Series wins followed by 2 loses in the ALCS. So close to dynasty status...

Not many players up for arbitration as I took care of some of them. Even though I gave them a bit more per year than their projected arbitration, most signed 3-4 year deals. So if they have good years, their price won't go up on me. At least until their contracts are up.

Ken James and Mikie Mahtook will not be given offers. C Wilson Ramos will be hitting FA.

Only 2 players
SP Taylore Cherry gets $1.9mil
SP Vladimir De La Cruz gets $750,000

In both cases, the arbiter sided with the team.

And then Taylore Cherry is taken in the Rule 5 Draft......damn, forgot to check if anyone I wanted to keep was eligible. I just assumed he wouldn't be. Not that mad about it though. I didn't like giving nearly $2mil to a pitcher coming off such a big injury. I think he might have a huge drop off from his pre-injury performance.

SP Matt Moore has been traded to the Miami Marlins for CF Jose Marlos Baraja. A great fielder with speed and a decent hitter. He is listed as fragile. I also grabbed a young pitcher prospect. This does clear up ~$8mil for me.

I was in the running for SP Tim Licecum for awhile, but some teams.....the expansion teams.....have a ton of money to throw around. Columbus bid the price up and I guess I offered too many "low" offers because Lincecum won't talk to me anymore.

I sign SP Danny Hultzen to a 4 year, $6.5mil per year deal. I had a 12-12 record last year with an ERA of 3.82, 1.23 WHIP, 2.52 OAVG (Scouted at 3 stars)

I also sign 4-star MR Rafael Dolis. 3.04 ERA last year with a 1.27 WHIP and .226 OAVG. He is listed as "Fragile" and I gave hi a $1.8mil for 1 year deal.

I sign SP Trevor May. He was one of the top Starting Pitchers in FA this year. I sign him to a 4 year, $61mil deal ($15.29mil per year). 16-8 record with a 3.47 ERA, 219 strikeouts, 1.24 WHIP and .225 OAVG.

I invested a lot into pitching this offseason. The owner increased the budget from $140mil to $154mil. That gave me a good deal of room to work with. Here's hoping it pays off.

Record: 17-8, .680, 1st in AL East 3.5 Game Ahead of NY Yankees

So far, my spending has paid off. We are 1st in the AL in Starters ERA, 5th in Bullpen ERA, 1st in Runs Against. We are also 1st in Runs Scored, t-2nd in Batting average, 1st in OBP and t-1st in Home Runs.

Joe Mahoney is hitting .396 and has 12 HRs. Ricardo Engeitado is .276 with 7 HRs. Nicky Delmonico is .333 with 8 HRs.

Tyrell Jenkis is 3-1, 2.13 ERA.
Trevor May is 3-1, 3.72 ERA (he was at 2.xx, but he got lit up early in his last start)
Dyland Bundy is 2-2, 3.27 ERA
Aaron Sanchez is 3-2, 4.58 ERA (he had a terrible start, but has gotten it together in his last 2 starts)
Danny Hultzen is 4-1, 3.21 ERA

And now the bad news
MRs Rudy Brown and Chris Foster have done poorly so far. C Gabriel Lino is only hitting .185. Which isn't far below his average....but I have no other option, and no one in FA right now has played above the single-A level. Probably should have tried harder to keep Ramos.

What is it with players going in the tank after signing a big deal with me? Dylan Bundy's ERA has gone up nearly 2 full points in his last 3 starts.

I trade C Gabriel Lino and 2B Aderlin Rodriguez (AAA player) for C Jose Bonilla. Not a great catcher, nor a great batter. Just better. ~.20 better Average and ~.40 better OBP. Worth it to dump a terrible catcher and a 2B that didn't have much of a shot at the majors any time soon.

Gabriel Melendez wanted $16mil a year. He must be out of his mind.

CF Carlos Serrano signs a 3 year deal for $1.9mil a year. At 168 AB, he hit .292, .349 OBP, .482 SLG. If he put those numbers up again next year, he'd cost me a lot more than $1.9mil in arbitration.

CF Jose Carlos Baraja signs a 4 year, $15.8mil deal. Another player that, if he kept improving, would cost me a lot more to keep in arbitration.

3B Ross Thompson signs a 4 year, $24.4mil deal.

I trade Vladimir De La Cruz to Indianapolis for Taylore Cherry (welcome back). De La Cruz is 30, and this year was his last to make an impression. He did, a bad one. We'll bring Cherry back to give him another shot.

MR Rudy Brown signs a 3 year, $13.14mil extension. (About 1 mil less per year than he made this past season. He's listed as "Wrecked" for injury history....hoping he holds up)

Taylore Cherry signs a 1 year, $2.2mil deal.

Another year, another Hitter of the Year award for Joe Mahoney. His 6th time winning the award. He's also hit for the triple crown 3 times. He's 33 years old, has 380 HR and 1018 RBI. Got a relatively late start on his major league career, so probably no real shot at any career records. He's currently 68th in all time HR.

Ricardo Engeitado, however, is 28 and is at 225 HR and he has hit 50+ in his last 2 seasons.

I trade C Victor Velazquez and 1B prospect Juan Solano to San Diego for C Abel Baker and $2.5mil in cash.

I sign C Brian Ward to a 3 year, $10.2mil deal. He'll probably be my only FA pick up this off season.

MR Ralph O'Scully suffered a setback in his injury recovery. His career is now over.

Major League rules change. Veteran players can no longer refuse a demotion to the minor leagues.

Ross Thompson gets injured in spring training and will miss 6-7 months.

I trade MR Rudy Brown to the Cincinnati Reds for CF Christian Cobb, a great fielder with speed, but just an okay hitter. I once again have an overload at MR and need to bring up 1 or 2 guys before I seriously piss them off. Cobb is 3.5/4 stars, but most of that has to be fielding and base running. He hasn't hit above .250 in the majors yet.

I trade minor league MR Walt Helms and a few prospects (who I don't think will pan out) to the Washington Nationals for 2B Sam Reynolds, a decent batter with a lot of potential who I'm adding for depth. Helms is good enough to play in the majors, I just never had the room for him.

The guy I just added for depth gets put in the starting lineup at 2B. Peret was moved to SS in place of Ross Thompson.

I'm giving John Liberto a shot at the starting rotation again.

Christian Cobb is hitting .322, ~0.080 higher than his average last year. Damn, I might have hit the lottery with this guy, unless this is just a fluke. Speaking of flukes, Moriondo is hitting under .200. I'm starting to think his .314 season 2 years ago was the fluke. He only hit .232 last year and now this year isn't looking any better.

My other recent pick up, Sam Reynolds, is hitting .263, ~.030 higher than his average last year. However, this biggest plus with him is that his OBP is .368, ~.075 higher than last year.

Abel Baker is hitting .286. Finally a catcher who can hit.

Engeitado got off to a terrible start. He was around .200 AVG after the first two weeks, but he's pulled it together.

Booo!!

Just wait til next year when I have this team plus Ross Thompson and Mario Peret.

Well maybe. Tyrell Jenkins and Nicky Delmonico both did not execute their options (Engaitado and Zych did) so they will be testing free agency this year. And I don't think I can afford to keep Jenkins. He was making ~$6 mil, it's going to take $10mil more per year to hold him. Delmonico made close to $9 mil, but he also had a big drop off this year. He was down ~0.050 in AVG and OBP. I'm actually kinda glad to be rid of his deal. I might be able to just take that money and give it to Jenkins.

CF Christian Cobb wins a Golden Glove.
Joe Girardi wins AL Manager of the Year

For the first time since 2013, A Baltimore Orioles batter did not win the AL Hitter of the Year award. Mahoney won 6 of the previous 7 with Engeitado winning on his off year.

I trade SP Danny Hultzen along with 3 prospects to the Seattle Mariners for SP Jorge Bermudez. He's an upgrade that costs $4mil more per year than Hultzen.

I also offered Jenkins a 4 year, $15.5 mil per year extension. He signed it.

Arbitration
CF Christian Cobb gets $6.792mil
MR Kelly McMillan gets $1.2mil
SS Jamie Emery gets $4.2mil
C Abel Baker gets $4.8mil
SS Cristian Adames gets $750k

After Arbitration, I am just barely in the red.
