I have a nice little bonus from DirecTV now with the Sunday Ticket. I now get it on my Palm Pre as well. Very cool to get the games on my phone for no extra charge. My guess is the iPhone has had this already but I ain't never hads no iPhone.

Anyone interested in getting 3 free months of directv just tell them your canceling because they don't have versus anymore and you can't see NHL games.

I called and complained about losing Versus due to their petty arguing over prices and they gave me the NHL package (the reasoning I gave for being pissed) for half price.

82 bucks for the NHL center ice pack == excellent!

FYI, according to a press release from last week, ESPNU is supposed to go HD sometime in May.

I think so. I have the package, so I'm getting it either way. Considering all the college sports they have for free on the regional networks, it's a bargain IMO.

I'm getting DirectTV hooked up for the first time Sunday. I debated the sports pack, but it seems that there's more college sports than I could ever watch on the regular channels, and none of the regional networks cover my team (Syracuse). I will miss ESPN Classic

Has anybody activated with them recently? There's a Best Buy deal where you $350 worth of gift cards if you get Direct TV, and a new HDTV, through them. It occurs to me now that I don't quite know what it means to get Direct TV "through" Best Buy. I did follow Best Buy's link to Direct TV when I ordered, but now I'm reading about calling them, and promo codes.....I'll have to figure this out.

Unless things have changed it doesn't really mean anything.

A lot of great college basketball and football on the regional sports networks that you can't get through the ESPN PPV packages. Plus soccer, ESPNU, some of the other niche sports channels... Total bargain at $12 / month.

FWIW... ESPNU standard def was moved to the regular tier at least a year ago. Don't know what they are going to do when ESPNU goes HD. But ESPNU is not part of the sports package.

Yeah, and with Versus back in the fold, there will be nearly 100% coverage of free college football between the networks, ESPN, and the regionals.

I've been having a strange issue on DirecTV. I've noticed a few times recently that ESPN will just disappear from my channel lineup. I've noticed it while hunting for NBA playoffs. The only thing I can think of is that they black out Celtics games for us, and that it is showing on some other channel. Anyone else have experiences like this? The shot below is from last night, when the Celtics vs. Magic was on. ESPN (206) is missing.

I've had blackout issues before, but never seen the channel drop off the screen. The channel will be there, but you'll just get that error message saying the show is blacked out and check local channels. So I don't think that's it. Not sure what that problem is. I'm assuming when you go into the favorites list for that channel lineup, 206 still shows as being checked?

I didn't even know they offered that. I guess the problem/limitation for that is having to have HD receivers for any TV that you want to connect. We've only got 2 HD TVs - one with the HD DVR and one with an HD Receiver - so this would only work on those two TVs. Not sure I'm going to pony up for a couple more HD receivers to optimize this service. But for $3/month, it might still be worth getting.

I only have 2 TVs in my house now, both of which are HDs so for me it's great- I used to have to go room to room to change recordings, and then i'd spend a lot of time deleting programs in the livingroom that I watched in the bedroom... this will make it nice- and give me the ability to record 4 things at once.

I don't use the favorites function. I use the Quick Tune function that you access using the yellow button, and I didn't think of looking at that when this was going on last night. ESPN is back now. I'm almost positive that it is somehow related to the NBA playoffs, because every time I have noticed ESPN was missing, it was because I was trying to find an NBA game.

I'm talking about when you have to manually add the channels. That's the one thing I hate about the way this is set up - I have a custom channel list because I don't want to have to scroll through all the crap I don't want, but when new channels go live, I don't know it unless I read about it. That's why I've kept up with the ESPNU thing, because I've been waiting for it. Otherwise, I'd be watching college football this fall in SD, oblivious to the fact that the HD channel was active.

I really need to learn to use Quick Tune, though. I've actually got it set up, but never think to use it. And I hate changing channels manually because the numbers never register as fast as they should. I had them troubleshoot that once and they told me it had something to do with the receiver/remote set up, and they told me they fixed it, but it still does it. So I'll type in the 2, have to wait a couple of seconds for it to register, then try to quickly type in the rest of the channel "06-1" and sometimes I make it, and sometimes I don't. Or, I type too quickly after the "2" and it won't recognize the 2 and starts at "0". It's infuriating. Usually what I do is just set the 2 channels I want to watch and toggle between them with the last channel button.

I was thinking maybe it had something to do with his channel selections saying "show only channels I receive" or something like that.

Heh. Didn't realize they had a custom favorites option. Will have to set that up tonight.

I am strongly considering switching to DTV this fall, but I'm a little hesitant because it seems like no matter what customer service dept you talk to (cable, Dish, Direct), when you ask specific questions, they aren't very knowledgeable (especially concerning sports viewing).

Here is a for instance...in my area we get two regional sports channels-- comcast sports net chicago (cubs, whitesox) and fox midwest (cardinals). I signed up for Dish a couple of years ago and the rep i spoke with put in my info and said -yep, you will get both of these channels. That's very odd...I don't know if I've ever seen an instance where a customer gets two regional sports channels.- I got it hooked up and yes, i got both channels, but the cardinals were blacked out. Dish was removed the next day and I scampered back to cable. Of course I've had my issues with them also. These reps just don't seem to know the details of sports viewing per area.

I looked at DTV zip code guide and it also shows that I would get both channels. Even if they tell me I'll get both cards and cubs games, I won't believe it til I see it. Guess I need to find someone locally with DTV and have them check.

Thats the best bet- find someone who has direct tv and ask them... I will be dropping Cox Sports when I swtich back to direct tv- and will no longer get all the hornets games, but oh well... I could always pick up the NBA package if I really wanted, I just don't want basketball that much.

They want to revolutionize TV viewing? Screw 3D, bring on Mental Telepathy Remote Control. I would die happy. Of course, my wife would probably go crazy, but you take the good, you take the bad...

According to the website, you can sign up for it now.

According to DBSTalk.com, it's been in beta.

Press the triangle button above the select button, and then you can program in 9 of your favorite channels for easy access.

There's apparently a way to do it over a network, but I may just go for the hardware install option.

I just called tonight. I got a GREAT customer service rep, the best one I've ever talked to at DirecTV. She was knowledgable, friendly, and she gave me an absolutely killer deal on upgrading two of my standard boxes to DVR's as well as getting the new Whole-Home DVR Service. Of course, I realize the catch is that by upgrading those 2 boxes, I commit to 2 more years of DirecTV, but I have/had zero plans in switching as I'm addicted to the Sunday Ticket. Apparently, this new deal is very popular in my area as the earliest installation being offered is June 10th. I was in the Beta for this service and really enjoyed it, but with the new DECA converters, it should be much better.

DBStalk is where I learned about the beta process. I had our 2 HD-DVR's hooked up via wireless adapters. That setup worked well for any of the standard def shows, but the wireless network did not do a good job with HD recordings which had frequent pauses. DECA should take care of that.

If you do it over a network, it is not supported by DirecTV at all. If you go for the DECA package, it is 99 dollars for however many DECA modules you need plus they are throwing in other goodies as well. Oh yeah, it is also 49.99 for the installation charge.

Edit to add: Here is a link to a good info page on dbstalk.com that has all of the basic info about the package and technology:

Man, much harder to sell $99/module to the wife. How can you determine how many modules you'll need? And yes, I know the answer is probably on the page you linked to, but I'm being lazy.

The installer will tell you how many you need, but you want one for every box that you want connected. It is not 99 per module. It is 99 for all of the modules regardless of how many you want/need.

They are also making sure that every box I'm getting connected is connected to the internet through a DECA bridge which is included and will connect to my router. That will ensure smooth On Demand TV for every box which they will provide technical support for as well. Before, I've been getting my On Demand from wireless adapters. That is also included in the 99 dollars (plus 49 for the installer.)

The only catch is that some boxes are not supported (a detailed list of which boxes are supported and which aren't is included in that thread I linked.) For example, my two very basic old receivers (from 2006) weren't supported by this technology, but they gave me a really great deal to upgrade them to basic DVR's. I got 1 DVR for free and the other for 29 dollars.
