2006 Evaluation:
Goal Assesment: OFFENSE 1. Keep Turnovers and Penalties to a minimum We had 112 penalties in 2006, 12th fewest in the league. As for turnovers, we had 22 on the season, the 9th fewest in the league. Not Achieved. 2. Develop C Mangold and LT Ferguson into the anchors of the offensive line who can be relied upon for years to come. These two players have shown excellent progress over the course of the season. They will be the starting LT and C for many years down the road. Achieved 3. Evaluate QB Pennington's abilities. Can he make it through a whole season? Pennington played all 16 games, and not only did he stay healthy, he had a very solid season. Acheived 4. Use the RB by Commitee approach to keep opposing defenses off balance. Houston, Washington, and Barlow all had very solid seasons. Besides Houston's and Washington's fumbling problems, the two had very good years. Barlow was a big surprise as well. Achieved 5. Develop WR Coles and WR Cotchery into a fearsome tandem. These two both had very solid seasons. Coles dropped too many passes, but having both of them as big threats has improved our team greatly. Achieved DEFENSE 1. Use the 2006 season to transition to the 3-4 Defense. This goal is achieved no matter how well we do or not. We used it as a year to learn the new system, and the experience gained will be invaluable over the next few years. Achieved 2. Develop the skills of WLB Thomas, as he has switched positions. Thomas went from being labeled a bust, to being labeled a solid OLB. Achieved 3. Evaluate the ability of NT Robertson. Robertson did okay, but may be moved to DE because of his true NT ability. Not Achieved 4. Find the best CB to play opposite of Dyson. If Coleman isn't the right guy, find out who is. Coleman had an incredible year, and will most likely be the starter in 2007 as well. Achieved OVERALL 1. Develop "Team First" mentality The team has become close and closer as the season went on. However, there are some players who haven't bough into the system. Not Achieved 2. Win 9 games Achieved 3. Evaluate the skills of each player and develop a system that utilizes their strengths. Our scouts have spent thousands of hours studying tape of games and practices. We know their skills, and have developed gameplans around their strengths. Achieved |

News Update
With the ability for each team to send one second year player to play in the NFL Europe league over the summer, the Jets have elected to send linebacker Anthony Schlegel. With Anthony's impressive performance in 2006, and possible ability to start in 2007, the Jets would like to see more of Schlegel in a starting role in order to assess his abilities. This will also give him some playing time, which may develop his skills even further. |

2007 Off-Season:
Areas of Concern Defensive End: Our biggest concern right now is by far, the defensive line. We gave up the most yards per carry out of any team in the NFL and run defense will be our top priority this off-season. Nose Tackle: Depending on what happens this off-season and who is available, either a run-stopping DE or a big, run-stuffing NT will be acquired. Running Back: Leon Washington and Cedric Houston had solid seasons, but both have had trouble holding on to the ball. If we can find an extremely solid back who will keep us from worrying about that, we will make a move. However, they have to be a perfect fit. Fullback: B.J. Askew had a solid season as a pass-catching FB and a pass-blocking FB, but never made any big holes for our running backs. If we can aquire a good run-blocking FB, we may carry both on the roster, depening on Askew accepts our contract. Quarterback: We need a solid, veteran QB if Ramsey asks for too much money. Tight End: Baker and Ryan have been great for us, but if a dominating tight-end is on the free agent market, we may go after them. Wide Receiver: A solid third-down receiver would be a great addition to the team. Left Guard: A younger guard to replace Kendall in the next year or two would be a solid addition. Right Guard: We definitely need to replace RG Brandon Moore in the off-season. Right tackle: If Clement gets signed in free agency by another team, we will have to replace him. Inside Linebacker: Depending on what happens with Vilma, we may need a replacement ILB. Cornerback: A shutdown corner will be targeted in the off-season. It's one of our biggest needs as well. Free Safety/Strong Safety: One of these two positions could be upgraded, but it's not a very important need. Last edited by JetsIn06 : 01-21-2007 at 09:21 AM. |

Player Retirements
DE Bobby Hamilton Hamilton will retire from the NFL after serving his final year with the New York Jets. He was best known for his pass-rushing ability and his leadership qualities. DE Kimo von Oelhoffen von Oelhoffen, a player who also retired after one year with the New York Jets, struggled in his last season because of his age, but was a great mentor and leader in locker room. T Jason Mathews Mathews came to the Jets in the middle of the season, after a trade opened up a spot on the roster. He is an experienced veteran who served his role well this past season. 2007 NFL Off-Season Preview: New York Jets
The Jets sit in a pretty position this off-season. With over $34 million dollars available to spend on free agents and draft picks, look for them to make some decently significant moves, even if it is on players already on the team. 4th-year wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery is in the final year of his contract, due to be paid only $610,000 in 2007. The Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum and head coach Eric Mangini would love to extend his contract a few years, but know that Cotchery's agent, Tracy Nikolaus, will be looking for a long term deal with a significant amount of money. Another player looking to get a new deal is 3rd-year safety Kerry Rhodes, who has really established himself as a team leader and has earned a permanent spot on this team. He is also in the last year of his contract and the Jets might not be willing to let him slip to another team. He has become a favorite of Mangini, working hard during practices and games. Another reason the Jets sit so pretty this off-season, which ties in with their salary cap situation, is that there is only 9 players who became unrestriced free agent's (UFA's) this off-season, and only one them was a starter in 2006. Anthony Clement, the one starting UFA, will most likely work out a deal to stay in 2007, but will probably be in competition with another player to earn the starting RT position. A few players will also need to re-negotiate their contracts to keep a potential spot on the team. One example of a player who needs to re-work his deal is running back Kevan Barlow. Barlow was actually a good surprise this year, becoming the Jets go-to man on the goal-line and in short yardage situations. However, he is slated to make $3,250,000 this year and $4,000,000 in 2008. The Jets are not willing to keep him around for that type of change, but it's possible that he will re-work his deal. Another player who will have to re-negotiate, but most likely won't, is receiver Justin McCareins. Justin lost his starting spot early on in training camp to Jerricho Cotchery, and quickly fell out of favor with Mangini. He will most likely be offered a new deal, but I wouldn't expect him to agree to it. He will most likely end up being cut or traded. As for filling in areas of need, and filling in holes left by departing players, the Jets will look to make a small splash into free agency, picking up 1 or 2 marquee players. Speaking of needs, the Jets have a few holes, some glaring, such as defensive end and right guard, and some not so glaring, such as cornerback and fullback. Luckily for the Jets, there are a few excellent players in free agency that will fill those spots. Look for Jets to take a serious look at the CB position in free agency, targeting Bills CB Nate Clements. Clements really fits into the Jets mold, playing very well against the run, and is an excellent bump-and-run defender. For the defensive end position, the Jets will most likely look to fill in this position, left by the retiring Kimo von Oelhoffen, through the draft, which has an outstanding DE/DT class. The Jets may target Adam Carriker, a 6'6", 295 pound Nebraska graduate. Carriker has shown a lot of potential in college, proving himself to be a dominant run-stopping DE, and a capable pass-rusher. He will most likely end up lasting to the Jets 1st-round pick, which is number 16 overall. The Jets are looking to bring themselves to the top of the AFC East, which means they will have to overthrow the reigning AFC East champion New England Patriots. Look for the Jets to do anything they can to get into that position, or to set themselves up to get to that position soon. Last edited by JetsIn06 : 01-25-2007 at 10:20 AM. |

Contract Update:
In a quite expected move, the New York Jets and WR Jerricho Cotchery have agreed to a 5-year contract extension, which extends his contract until 2012. The deal was reportedly signed on Thursday afternoon, after a day of meetings between Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum and Cotchery's agent, Tracy Nikolaus. The deal is being intially reported as a $25,000,000 deal over 5 years, with his first year salary being $2,050,000, which will escalate to $3,640,000 in his last contract year. His signing bonus was reportedly for a total of almost $3 million. Last edited by JetsIn06 : 01-24-2007 at 08:20 PM. |

Contract Update:
Following the announcement that the Jets have re-worked the deal of starting WR Jerricho Cotchery, the Jets PR Department has announced that GM Mike Tannenbaum and RB Kevan Barlow's agent, Ryan Smith, have to an an agreement on a contract re-negotiation. Barlow was slated to make $3.5 million in 2007 and $4 million in 2008, but has re-worked his deal to now earn $2.2 million in both of his two remaining seasons under contract with the New York Jets. Contract Update:
Approximately 4 days after the contract of WR Jerricho Cotchery was extended, the Jets locked up another one of their future stars, extending safety Kerry Rhodes' contract up until the year 2010. Rhodes, who will be entering his 3rd season in the NFL, has become one of the strongest, most hard working players on the Jets, and has become an anchor on the defensive side of the ball. Rhodes and his agent, Clay Schmadl, agreed to a 3-year extension, worth a total of $15 million, with $4 million of that being guaranteed. These two deals to Rhodes and Cotchery will solidify a position on both sides of the ball for the next few years. Last edited by JetsIn06 : 01-24-2007 at 08:19 PM. |

Transaction Update:
This is the time of year for each NFL team to do some house-cleaning. Each player on the team will be analyzed by coaches and the front office, and a decision will be made whether or not that player is worth the money that the player is supposed to earn the coming season. For many of these players, they will be offered a chance to re-work their contract, turning their multi-million dollar salaries into a six-figure amount. A lot of the times, the players think they are worth more, and will accept the fact that they will be cut. The New York Jets are no different, and have come to the decision to release their first player of 2007, cornerback David Barrett. Barrett asked for a $7 million dollar deal over the next three years, something the Jets are clearly not willing to pay for someone who started only 3 games in 2006. Barrett didn't quite fit into the Jets defense, having a lot of difficulty playing bump-and-run coverage, a staple in the Jets defensive system. The Jets also parted ways with RB Derrick Blaylock, who after two seasons with the Jets, made no significant impact, yet still wanted a pay-raise. WR Justin McCareins has been an interesting storyline to follow this past season. After coming into camp overweight, he quickly fell out of favor with his new coach Eric Mangini, and didn't get much playing time in 2006. He was offered an option to accept a re-worked contract but turned it down, saying, "I want to play somewhere that I'm wanted." Other players who were cut: ILB Brad Kassell CB Hank Poteat FS Rashad Washington Last edited by JetsIn06 : 01-25-2007 at 10:23 AM. |

2007 Free Agency Period:
Pre-Free Agency: The coming of March means one thing in the NFL. Free Agency is just like the season in which it comes. Teams get a chance to do a little spring cleaning, going through their roster and cleaning out anyone who no longer fits or anyone who may cost too much against the salary cap. They then have a chance to look through the pile of players that other teams let go, looking to fill in holes, and upgrade important positions. The New York Jets, who are looking to upgrade a few key areas, have a ton of cap room ($39.5M) and will be looking to make a significant splash. With this being only the first week in free agency, the Jets will give an offer sheet to the top free agents that they are targeting. Based on their initial reactions to the offer, as well as other teams offers to the players, they will either increase the offer, withdraw it, and/or target another free agent. 2007 Free Agency Period:
Week 1: -NEW OFFERS- CB Nate Clements. 6'0". 209. The New York Jets are rumored to have given an offer sheet to one of the top cornerbacks in free agency, Nate Clements. Clements was often refered to as one of the Jets top targets, as he is known as one of the better run-defending cornerbacks in the NFL, and is also a very strong in bump-and-run coverage. The offer sheet is reportedly for $3,120,000 over three years. However, Clements has made it known that he only wants a one-year deal this past season. FB Michael Sellers. 6'3". 260. With the absence of a true run-blocking fullback, the Jets have offered fullback Michael Sellers, formerly of the Washington Redskins, a $5.55 million dollar deal for three years. If Sellers accepts the deal, he will contribute heavily to the running game, in both blocking and rushing aspects. TE Daniel Graham. 6'3". 257. The New York Jets have officialy begun their raid on the king of the AFC East, as they have reportely given an offer sheet to tight-end Daniel Graham. Graham provides a big target for Jets QB Chad Pennington, especially in the red-zone. Graham is also a terrific blocker, and will be a very good upgrade to that position, and will allow the Jets to run more two TE formations in 2007. The offer sheet has been reported to be worth $22,260,000 over five seasons. G Eric Steinbach. 6'6". 297. With RG being a very well-stocked position in free agency this off-season, the Jets have made an offer to, who many would call, the 3rd ranked guard in free agency. With the top two guards demanding a huge contract, Steinbach is a younger guard who still has very good skills. He was offered a $12,000,000 deal over 4 years. T Jordan Black. 6'6". 315 The aren't many outstanding tackles in this years free agency, but there are definitely some worth offering a starting spot to. This week, the New York Jets have made an offer to 5th-year tackle Jordan Black, reportedly has been offered a one-year deal worth $1.68 million. DE Nick Eason. 6'3". 310. With veteran defensive ends Kimo von Oelhoffen and Bobby Hamilton retiring this past season, the Jets have offered defensive end Nick Eason a one-year deal for $1.09 million. If he accepts the offer sheet, he will most likely compete for the starting position, if the Jets decide to fill in that position through the draft as expected. LB James Darling. 6'0". 250. The New York Jets have been reportedly offered former Arizona Cardinal linebacker James Darling a two-year offer worth $3,320,000. He is a solid run defender, something the Jets will value after being ranked the worst run defense in the league last season. S Mark Roman. 5'11". 201. The Jets are not in dire need of a starting safety, but they have the salary cap room to upgrade. Roman has been offered a one-year deal worth $1.05 million. -EXTENSION OFFERS- QB Patrick Ramsey. 6'2". 225. Veteran QB Patrick Ramsey has been offered a one-year extension for $740,000. FB B.J. Askew. 6'3". 235. Askew has been offered a one-year extension worth $740,000. WR/PR Dennis Northcutt. 5'11". 171. Northcutt has been offered a one-year extension worth $900,000. G Tupe Peko. 6'4". 300. Peko has been offered a one-year contract worth $1.1 million. -RESTRICTED FREE AGENT EXTENSIONS- TE Sean Ryan. 6'5". 265. Ryan has been offered a one-year contract worth $680,000, and accepted the offer sheet. LB Cody Spencer. 6'2". 245. Spencer has been offered a three-year contract worth $2.35 million, and has accepted the deal. Last edited by JetsIn06 : 01-24-2007 at 10:53 PM. |

Sellers has only been offered a deal by the New York Jets, but has not accepted their offer at this point. T Jordan Black. 6'6". 315 Black has been offered a deal by the New York Jets, and the Carolina Panthers, but has not made a decision at this point. The Jets have made a new offer for $1.95M over one-year. LB James Darling. 6'0". 250. Darling has only been offered a deal by the New York Jets, but has not accepted their offer at this point. The New York Jets have reportedly offered wide-receiver Frisman Jackson, formerly of the Cleveland Browns, a one-year deal for $900,000. G Edwin Mulitalo. 6'3". 340. It seems that the Jets are looking to bolster the depth of their offensive line, as they have been reported to have offered guard Edwin Militalo a one-year contract, worth $950,000. Transaction Update:
With the off-season retirements of defensive ends Kimo von Oelhoffen as well as vetern DE Bobby Hamilton, the Jets found themselves with an empty hole at a position. With the heavy stock of talent at the defensive line positions in in the upcoming NFL Draft, many expected that the Jets would wait until then to fill in that hole. However, their first contract signing came today, and it is with veteran defensive end Nick Eason, formerly of the Cleveland Browns. Eason, who battled through a nagging leg injury last season, will most likely rotate in with another DE that will probably be selected in the NFL Draft, and Jets coaches are hoping Eason will help stop the run on the defensive side of the ball. The New York Jets have come to an agreement with free agent TE Daniel Graham. Graham will immediately provide a big target for quarterback Chad Pennington over the middle, and in the red-zone. This also helps out the Jets in a different way, taking away a big player from their rival, the New England Patriots. In 2006, Graham had 38 catches for 391 yards, had 5 TD receptions, and also was a key run and pass blocker. He will heavily impact this offense, allowing offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer run more double tight-end formations, something the Jets have would like to do, but have lacked the personell to do. The New York Jets have upgraded their team once again, utilizing their salary cap room to improve key areas that were somewhat weak this past season. The Jets and G Eric Steinbach, a 5th-year veteran, have agreed on a contract, and the 6'6", 297 pound former Bengal will be in green and white in 2007 through 2010. Steinbach, barring injury, will become the Jets starting right guard, and will instantly improve the running game, as well as pass-protection. In 2006, Steinbach allowed six sacks, and did a very good job when opening up running lanes. He also was a workhorse, starting all 16 games, and only had one mild injury in week 6, that he played through with no problem. |

The New York Jets have announced that a deal has been made between the Jets and cornerback Nate Clements. After a few weeks of negotiating, Clements made the decision to sign with the New York Jets. At the start of free agency, Clements and his agent, Jessie Kingsblood, expressed that they only wanted a one-year deal, but the Jets still offered him a thee-year deal, which may have been a risk at the time, but has payed off. Surprisingly, Clements, who was one of the top-five cornerbacks in free agency, didn't receive an offer from any team besides the Jets, and decided that instead of waiting for another offer, he would accept the bid to play for the Jets. Perhaps a part of that decision was based on the fact that he knows the Jets have a pretty good shot at being a playoff contender, or perhaps he didn't think he would get a better offer. Either way, Clements has expressed that is very happy to be a Jet, and the team feels the same way. |

The New York Jets have announced a press conference in which they will announce the signing of fullback Michael Sellers to a three-year deal worth $5.53 million. Sellers will bolster the running game, with the ability to not only block well, but also run the ball in short yardage situations. He is going to be a valuable asset to the team in many ways. Sellers comes from the Washington Redskins, where he wasn't utilized to his full potential, getting no rushing attempts in 2006. He comes to the Jets looking to play hard, and win games. After weeks of debating his future, safety Mark Roman has accepted the offer from the New York Jets, earning him $1.5M in 2007. Roman will provide more depth at the safety position, something that the Jets couldn't say they had much of in the past few seasons. While playing for the San Francisco 49ers in 2006, Roman accumulated 3 interceptions, and started 15 games on the season. He is a pretty good special teams player as well, something the Jets have been looking to improve this season. Jets fans should be excited, knowing that Roman has been known for his jaw-dropping hits. He will surely cause some commotion at home-games this season. |

Today, the New York Jets added one of the best free agents still available in free agency, signing linebacker Rob Morris to a one-year deal worth $1.25 million. Morris will assist inside linebackers Jon Vilma and Eric Barton, coming in during pass-rush situations, as well as spelling them in the base defense. Morris' biggest strength, however, is in his special teams ability. He will defintely give the kickoff and punt return/coverage teams a boost. |

2007 Off-Season:
NFL Draft Preview: New York Jets With free agency winding down, and most of the big names finding their place on a new team, talks now shift to one of the most exciting times of the year, the NFL Draft. The New York Jets have had an exciting off-season thus far. With a huge amount of cap room, they have landed a few very good players, such as tight end Daniel Graham and cornerback Nate Clements. They have announced that they will no longer make any offers to remaining free agents, electing to wait until after the draft to assess any needs they may have. Because of their off-season, the Jets don't have too many holes left, but there are still some areas that can be improved. The one hole that the Jets do have, is RT, with no true RT's on the roster, they will most likely attempt to fill this position through the draft. Securing a rookie RT would mean that 3 of the 5 starting offensive linemen would be in their 2nd year or less, making them a very young line overall. This year's draft is going to be very interesting, as not many teams are in dire need of a tackle. However, it is definitely one of the most valued positions on the field, and teams will not hesitate to upgrade through the draft. The top tackle in the draft, Joe Thomas, comes out of Wisconsin. He has the potential to become an excellent left or right tackle, and could truely be selected by anyone before the Jets. However, the good news for the Jets, is that the remaining 4 of the top 5 tackles are all fairly similar. Ryan Harris, Jake Kuresa, Jared Gather, and Arron Sears all are rated fairly equal, meaning that one of them, if not all, will still be on the board at the Jets pick (16), and may be left at the Jets second-round pick (5 & 15). The Jets have interviewed each one of these players, either at the Senior Bowl in January or privately, but no one knows who they really value the most. Defensive end is the next obvious hole that the Jets may attempt to fill. However, after signing DE Nick Eason, we realy aren't sure when, or if, the Jets will draft this position. Common sense will tell us though, that in a well-stocked DE/DT draft, the Jets will end up drafting one on the first day that will rotate with Eason at the position. There are a lot of prospects that we know the Jets have been looking at, including DE Adam Carriker and DT Justin Harrell. Because of the Jets 3-4 scheme, any player that they are hoping to draft to play DE at the NFL level should be at least 290 lbs. and has to have good pass-rushing abilities. Harrell is a good example. He played DT in the college level, but could transition nicely into a 3-4 defensive end. Another direction that the Jets may go, but most likely in a later round, is left guard. Veteran LG Pete Kendall has been very reliable for the Jets, but has battles through injuries and is getting older, entering his 12th season in the NFL. The Jets may elect to draft a player who could eventually replace Kendall, but don't expect them to do this with any of their first three picks (1-16, 2-5, 2-15). Some of the players that the Jets may look at are George Batiste, a slightly unpolished player out of Southern Mississippi who many have said is a little underrated. He is rated as a a top-5 guard, but may end up falling a little further down. Perhaps the Jets may trade up into the bottom of the 2nd or to the top of the 3rd round to pick up Batiste. Head Coach Eric Mangini has spoken many times about the running back situation, but I don't think he even knows exactly what he expects to do, or wants to do, at the running back position. As of now, the starting running back spot is basically going to be shared by Leon Washington and Cedric Houston. Coach Mangini has said before that as soon as one of them stands out they will become the starter, but the fact is that neither of these two backs are consistent enough to establish themselves. Washington was statistically better than Houston, but both of them battled problems holding on to the ball. I expect the Jets to go either RT or DE with their first two picks, but I wouldn't be surprised if one of their top three picks is a running back. With Adrian Peterson almost a sure-fire top 5 pick, the running backs that present the best chance to drop to the Jets are Marshawn Lynch, a quick, powerful back out of California. Michael Bush also seems like he would be a good fit in New York. However, one of the biggest fan favorites is FB Brian Leanord, who played at Rutgers, the alma-matter of many Jet die-hards. Leanord not only blocks very well, but is also a beast up the middle and in short-yardage situations. A player like him is very versatile, and can line up at FB, RB, HB, as well as TE. With the addition of FB Michael Sellers in free agency and Leonard through the draft, the Jets would give themselves an extremely good goal-line package, and would give themselves many options on offense. Finally, another position I expect the Jets to pick up a player for through the draft is cornerback, but I don't expect the Jets to spend any picks on that position before the fourth round. Look for them to pick up a player who has good bump-and-run and special teams skills. A couple of players who fit the bill are Michigan CB Leon Hall, Iowa State CB DeAndre Jackson, and Georgia Tech CB Kenny Scott. |

2007 Off-Season:
The 2007 NFL Draft: Pre-Draft Twenty-two people, a mixture of scouts, coaches, capologists, and team representatives sit in a warm, humid room around a large, wooden conference table. Coffee keeps them awake. Notebooks and index cards are strewn across the room, but they somehow look organized. There are large white-boards on all four sides of the room, and notes, written in blue, black, and red ink, are scribbled on nearly every square inch of the boards. This is the war room. Head coach Eric Mangini sits at the head of the table, with general manager Mike Tannenbaum sitting at his right. It is 5:14 AM. The two have been awake since 3:30 AM, and they slept here last night. The rest of the people in the room chat amongst themselves, but Eric and Mike are the head honchos today. After months, if not years, of studying film, traveling, and writing endless notes, they are ready to select the players that will bring them to the Super Bowl. General manager Mike Tannenbaum is working on his laptop, making sure all of the vital information is quickly accessible. Every player in the draft has been ranked, ranked according to position, ranked according to position importance, and ranked according to combine scores. These men are prepared, there is no doubt about that. But it is hard for them not to be skeptical. After all, players can bust easily. Players that have the skills to be a hall of famer may simply not be able to handle the stresses of NFL life. Tannenbaum and Mangini have worked hard to weed out those types of players by interviewing, doing background checks, and talking to teammates and coaches of the players. They shrug off their worries, and look at the clock. It reads 5:59AM. Six hours and one minute until the NFL commisioner walks onto the stage at the Radio City Music Hall and announces that the draft has begun. Nine hours and forty-five minutes until the Jets are on the clock for the first time today. It's going to be a long, long day. |

2007 Off-Season:
The 2007 NFL Draft: Round One After hours of studying, debating, and writing, the 2007 NFL Draft will officialy begin in ten minutes. Mangini and Tannenbaum quickly look over their notes. When the time comes, they know they have to be prepared. However, crazy things happen in the draft, and you can't really take them into account until it happens. Therefore, thinking too far ahead can put you into a bind when something unexpected happens, so Tannenbaum and Mangini will take things one pick at a time. It is officialy 12:00 noon. NFL fans from all over the country begin to get seated, preparing to find out who their teams new star will be. However, the hall does seem to be dominated by Jets fans. Mangini and the other Jets personell don't expect the fans to boo their pick this year, but you never know. After years of draft day blunders, he wouldn't blame them. After months of waiting, the NFL Draft has arrived. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell walked onto the stage, set himself before the microphone, and announced thayt the 2007 NFL Draft has officially begun. "The Cleveland Browns are now on the clock." With about one minute and fourteen seconds left on the clock, the commissioner walked on to the stage. "With the first selection, in the 2007 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns select Brady Quinn, quarterback from Notre Dame." The Jets war room didn't even stutter. That pick was expected from a mile away, but they were now fifteen minutes closer to their pick. The next pick was sure to be a little more interesting. The Jets received a few phone calls from Denver, who had the second pick in the draft. More than likely, the Broncos had no interest in trading away their pick, but they wanted to throw out some assanine offers, just to see what they could get. Mangini politely declined the offers. The Jets were still unsure who Denver would select with their pick. The highest rated player on the Jets board was DT Alan Branch, a 331 lb. monster who was probably the most skilled player in the draft, even if Brady Quinn was still available. Adrian Peterson, the highest rated running back was also at the top of the list. Tannenbaum thought Denver would pick Branch. Mangini agreed. "With the second pick in the NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos select Paul Posluszny, linebacker from Penn State University." Mangini and Tannenbaum looked at each other with surprised looks. An unexpected pick this early on was somewhat strange. Both of them expected Posluszny to go later on in the first round. Houston was next team on the clock, and made another surprising move. They selected quarterback JaMarcus Russell, an outstanding athlete. It was surprising because the Texans already have a very good quarterback, David Carr. However, his contract runs out in two seasons, so perhaps they are setting themselves up for a solid future. The Chicago Bears, who had a horrible season despite the skills they have, selected the stud running back, Adrian Peterson, who is sure to be very impressive at the NFL level. Surprisingly, Alan Branch was still on the board, and whoever he falls is getting a very good value pick. Next to go in the draft was WR Calvin Johnson, an absolutely amazing athlete who will really be a game changer for the Tennessee Titans. The next pick was also a WR, with the Atlanta Falcons selecting Dwayne Jarrett. Mangini and Tannenbaum were growing more nervous, but also more excited. Their pick was now only ten picks away, approximately two and a half hours to go. The players who were still left on the board intrigued the two. With tackle Joe Thomas still available, they were hoping that he would fall to them at 16. Another player that was really intriguing was DE Adam Carriker, a huge defensive end that had all of the on-the-field skills, as well as intangibles. Well, Alan Branch didn't fall to far, with Cincinnati scooping him up with the number 7 pick in the draft. Following that selection, the San Francisco 49ers selected the second highest ranked DT, Frank Okam from Texas University. Next up was the first selection of one of Jets division rivals, the Buffalo Bills. The Jets expected that the Bills would select one of the Jets main targets, Joe Thomas, because the Bills offensive line is pretty weak. Surprsingly, they ended up selecting the highest ranked CB, Atoine Cason, which is Mangini's mind, was a terrible move. He was glad not only because his target was still on the board, but because he could blitz the hell out of the team twice each year. The Washington Redskins were the next team on the clock, and they needed help in a lot of areas. Over the past few years they have overpaid players and traded away draft picks for poor players. Today, they continued to do the same, selecting WR Ted Ginn Jr., a receiver who was highly skilled, but didn't really fill any holes. Now they were just overstocked at the WR position. After the next pick, Mangini and Tannenbaum could hardly control their excitement. With the 11th pick in the draft, the Lions, who have a terrible offensive line, selected the highest ranked guard instead of the highest rated tackle, which leaves Joe Thomas on the board with only 5 picks to go until the Jets selected. Tampa Bay was the next team on the clock, and picked DE Gaines Adams, a solid player out of Clemson. The Jets two favorites, Adam Carriker and Joe Thomas, were still left on the board with only 4 picks to go. Hopefully, both of them would not be taken with the next two picks. With the Vikings on the clock, Mangini and Tannenbaum were fairly sure that neither Thomas or Carriker would be picked, and they were right. The Vikings selected safety Laron Landry out of LSU. With only 2 picks until the Jets first-round selection, they knew that one of their targets would be there. If both were there, who would they pick? Mangini, Tannenbaum, and the rest of the coaches quickly compared notes on the two. Thomas, who would start at RT, has extremely high potential, but hasn't developed very much. Therefore, he may need a few years before he blossoms into an elite tackle. Plus, while tackle was a need, many of the Jets staff thought that defensive end was an even bigger need, as the Jets had the worst run defense in the league in 2006. But perhaps this wouldn't come into question, as the Colts were very thin at the tackle position, and the Dolphins were pretty set at tackle and defensive end. As expected, the Dolphins passed on the two players and selected CB Marcus McCauley, a player who may cause problems for our offense over the next few seasons. Now, the Jets were only fifteen minutes away from their pick. With the Indianapolis Colts now on the clock, the Jets continued their comparison of Carriker and Thomas, just in case, and waited. "With the 15th pick the 2007 NFL Draft, the Indianapolis Colts select Joe Thomas, tackle from Wisconsin University." Mangini and Tannenbaum exchanged glances. While Thomas was a big target, the player they came into the draft wanting was defensive end Adam Carriker, and now he was there for the taking. After discussing the decision over with the rest of the staff, the team came to the decision that Carriker would be their choice. Tannenbaum picked up the phone, and called the team representative that was there at the Radio City Music Hall. On the television, Mangini, Tannenbaum, and the other staff members in the war room watched as the commissioner walked towards the podium. The crowd, which was dominated by Jets fans, was going crazy, clapping and cheering in anticipation. They have been waiting for months to discover who the Jets would select, and now they would find out. "With the 16th pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, the New York Jets select Adam Carriker, defensive end from Nebraska." The crowd cheered, knowing that Carriker would help the team out significantly on defense. The first-round excitement was no over for the Jets. They had no interest in trading up to the first-round, so they continued to look over their notes, and waited until their next pick would come. |

2007 Off-Season:
The 2007 NFL Draft: Round Two The Jets sit in pretty position for round two of the draft, which was always a little less exciting, and a little more studious. Players taken after the first round are always going to be more of a gamble. After all, that is why they weren't taken in the first. Early on in the 2006 season, Jets coach Eric Mangini and GM Mike Tannenbaum learned that RT Adrian Jones, a very good player and starter in 2005, was arrested on the charges of driving under the influence of alcohol. In order to set a precedent, and show that off-the-field problems would not be tolerated, the Jets offered him to the Atlanta Falcons, who needed offensive line help. In return, they gave the Jets their second round pick. Luckily, Atlanta had a dissapointing season, and the Jets now have thenumber 5 and 15 picks in the 2nd round. In round two, the Jets will look to strengthen the RT position and possibly the RB position. Later on in the first round, all 3 of the remaining top running backs, Marshawn Lynch, Michael Bush, and Kenny Irons, were selected, leaving no big-name running backs. However, going into the draft, the Jets brass had their eye on a local player named Brian Leonard, who played fullback at Rutgers. Leonard posessed very good abilities, being able to block, run, and was versatile enough to play three of four different positions. However, he was selected by the Texans, who picked 4th in the second round. The Jets missed him by one pick. However, there wasn't any time to look back and wish they traded up. The Jets were now on the clock, and were looking to find the next "piece of the puzzle." After looking at the different talent left at each position, the Jets found what they were looking for. Mangini and Tannenbaum went into the draft knowing that it was very important to come out with a player to play RT. So not only was this pick going to based on need, but the player was also one of the best players available at that pick. Ryan Harris, a tackle from Notre Dame, showed really good skills in college, and has developed into a very good, NFL ready player. He also has great leadership skills, something that Mangini has really valued when selecting players for his team. "With the 37th pick in the draft, the Jets select Ryan Harris, tackle from Notre Dame." The Jets coaching staff wanted to relax until the third round, but they didn't have that luxury. They would be on the clock 10 picks from now. With that pick, the Jets really weren't sure what position they would be targeting. They did need a backup defensive end, but felt like that could wait until a later round. As much as they wanted to wait to select a backup, there were some very intriguing players left on the board that the Jets could pick. DT Abomi Okoye would fit in nicely, and could move to DE to backup Shaun Ellis. One thing about this player that really impressed the coaching staff was Okoye's intelligence. After moving to the U.S. from Nigeria, Okoye tested out of high school and got to join college at the age of 16. He then started at DT for Louisville, and graduated at the age of 20, becoming a one of the youngest draftees in years. The next player on Mangini's list was Quinn Pitcock, a player whose stock fell after not working out. He could also provide depth on the defensive line, and was a monster when defending against the run. With Quinn Pittcock being selected by the Miami Dolphins with the 13th pick in the 2nd round, DT Abomi Okoye was now the target. The Jets got lucky again with this pick, because not only did Okoye fill in a need, but he was also the best player available. "With the 47th pick in the draft, the Jets select Abomi Okoye, defensive tackle out of Louisville." With the first and second round now over, the Jets staff would have the longest wait of their day, with their next pick being the 23rd pick of the 3rd round, 38 picks from now. |

2007 Off-Season:
The 2007 NFL Draft: Round Three With three players already selected in this draft, and no true holes left, coach Mangini and GM Mike Tannenbaum have been searching for any sleepers that they can possibly add to the roster. They will look to get as much value as they can out of the remaining picks. A possible position that may be upgraded is WR, as veteran receiver Tim Dwight is getting up there in age and is somewhat expensive given his productivity. The other position that may be looked at is LG, where vetern Pete Kendall is entering his 12th season. The Jets will look to find an undervalued player that may have the potential to replace Kendall in the coming years. The Jets are now on the clock, and are taking a hard look at the players that are available. There are a few who are very interesting, but no one who is really worth this pick. Trading down may be their best bet. Mangini and Tannenbaum talk over the move, and try to assess where they should move down to. With the Oakland Raiders still in need of a franchise quarterback, and Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith still available, the Raiders seemed like the best bet to trade down with. Tannenbaum contacted the Raiders GM, and offered him a deal. He accepted, giving the Jets their 27th pick in the 3rd round and their 24th pick in the 6th. However, the Raiders used the pick to select CB A.J. Davis. Now that the Jets have moved down only 4 picks, and picked one up in the process, they have to select who they will take with 27th pick in the 3rd round. Two prospects especially caught the eye of Mangini. One of them was center Dustin Fry out of Clemson, who was pretty well developed and had the skills to eventually play LG. The other prospect was Anthony Wollachlger, who basically in the same boat, but played for Miami University. Fry had a better combine, but Wollachlger showed more intelligence. However, the deciding factor was weight. Fry was a nice, sturdy, 315 lbs., but Wollachlger was only a measley 285 lbs. "With the 91st selection in the draft, the New York Jets select Dustin Fry, center out of Clemson." The day has ended with four new Jets players, all who will most likely end up playing some kind of role with the team. Tomorrow, the Jets will look to find overlooked sleepers who can bring something special to the team. |

2007 Off-Season:
The 2007 NFL Draft: Round Four The second day has begun, and an entirely new strategy is now in play within the Jets war room. Yesterday, coach Mangini and general manager Mike Tannenbaum looked for players who would find an immediate role on the team. The Jets had a few holes, such as DE, RT, and LG. Now, with no dire needs, the strategy is to pick up players who do something special. They may not start, and they may not even make the team, but if they can offer something to us, we will take them. Mangini and the Jets staff have 7 picks today, giving them flexability to trade up, trade down, or stay put and take a few risks. Starting off the 4th round would be the Denver Broncos, and the Jets would not pick until the 22nd pick in that round. Looking at the roster, the Jets have 49 players under contract, and have drafted 4 players so far this weekend, bringing their total to 53 players, which is the maximum the could carry during the season. These next 7 players that they draft would really have to impress the coach during training camp, but they will get their chance. As for the positions that the Jets would be targeting, they still wanted a 4th running back, a backup nose tackle, and a 5th cornerback. The Jets are also looking for players that can contribute on special teams. When the Jets go on the clock, the best player on the board is RB Tyone Moss, an outside runner from Florida. However, he doesn't really fit the Jets needs, as he isn't a very good special teamer, and doesn't catch well out of the backfield. There are other, lower-rated running backs, that are a better fit for the Jets. The Jets, seeing that running back will be a pick they make in they later rounds, look elsewhere. However, no one really stands out that is at the top of the board. With QB Troy Smith surprisingly still on the board, the Jets look for a team that could want him. The Ravens, who have the aging Steve McNair as their signal-caller, look to be a good target. Tannenbaum picked up the phone and contacted their GM, offering him the number 22 pick in the 4th for their 5th, 6th, and 7th round picks in this years draft, as well as their 7th in 2008. He denied the offer, so Tannenbaum took out the 7th rounder in 2008, but the Ravens GM still didn't budge. Looking for another way around this, GM Tannenbaum and Mangini discussed their running back situation. In 2006, rookie RB Leon Washington had over 900 yards, but became somewhat of a liability because of his fumbling. They liked Leon, and wanted him around in 2007. The other young running back on the team, Cedric Houston, also had fumbling problems, and didn't have as good of a year, and the Jets had a feeling that other teams over-valued him. There were a few players on the Jets mind that they wouldn't mind trading for if they had the chance. One of them was Thomas Jones, an older, but capable running back from the Bears, who was second-fiddle to the younger Cedric Benson. Tannenbaum quickly called the Bears GM, knowing that time was running out on their pick. He started the offer by giving the Bears their 4th-round pick, getting Jones in return. The Bears GM liked the deal, but wanted a little more. The Jets, knowing what it would probably take offered them RB Cedric Houston, but also asking for the Bears 5th and 6th round picks in return. No deal. Tannenbaum quickly asked for just the 5th. No deal. With only one minute left on the clock, the Jets knew that they had to make a deal fast. After the Bears GM didn't accept the deal without any of his draft picks, Tannenbaum hung up the phone. There was one other player that the Jets were targeting. Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis. The Jets knew that it would take a lot to get Washington to trade Portis, but their backup RB Ladell Betts was pretty good, and so was their 3rd running back, T.J. Duckett, and the Jets were curious whether or not they wanted to move on without one of them. Quickly calling their GM, Tannenbaum offered Washington their 4th round pick and Cedric Houston to get Portis in return. Unwilling to pay the dead-cap money in future seasons, Washington declined. After making on offer for Betts with just the 4th-round pick, the Redskins GM seemed to like the idea. Maybe adding Houston would put him over the edge? He declined. Finally, in a last ditch effort to land one of the running backs, he asked for Duckett in return for Houston and the 4th round pick. He accepted. The Jets thanked the Washington GM, and the deal was done. After a stressfull round, the Jets could relax and wait until their 5th-round pick. |

The 2007 NFL Draft: Round Five The New York Jets had two picks in the 5th round, one at 21, and then one quickly after at 25. With cornerbacks and nose tackles still on the Jets radar, they looked at who could be there at the 21st and 25th pick. The first player that the Jets could pick was Will Gulley, a safety out of Houston that could translate well into a 5th cornerback. He had a good combine, and had experience at the CB position. Another player who the Jets liked was Joey Vincent, another college safety that would move to cornerback if drafted by the Jets. He was a great special teams player and had great hands. The Jets pick arrived, and both players were still on the board. The one thing that was worrying the Jets staff was that both players were still very undeveloped, and would probably receive very little playing time, other than special teams. One player that stood out as an alternate pick was Bobby Blackshire, a saftey out of Tulsa who was a special teams animal and was more developed than the other two. However, is coverage skills were not as strong. However, realizing that he would not be in a lot of coverage anyway, and his special teams skills were stronger, he would be the guy. "With the 149th pick in the draft, the New York Jets select Bobby Blackshire, safety from Tulsa." With their next pick only 4 picks away, the Jets quickly looked at the next prospect. One idea that Mangini had was to draft either Gulley or Vincent, hoping that one of them or Blackshire would stand out, and the better one would make the team. With both of them still available when the Jets pick came up, the decided that they would take a risk and pick up a running back, hoping that either Vincent or Gulley would remain in the 6th round. Austin Scott, a running back out of Penn State who was injured in 2006. He was a good third-down runner, who was elusive and recognized holes well. "With the 153rd pick in the draft, the New York Jets select Austin Scott, running back from Penn State University." After this round, the Jets had filled in two holes that could possibly end up playing roles on the team in 2007. In the 5th round and on, a "possibility" is all you can ask for. |

The 2007 NFL Draft: Round Six In the 5th round, the Jets took a gamble, hoping that one of the two players that they were targeting would last until their 6th round picks. With two picks in this round, one at 20 and one at 24, and two picks in the 7th, they had the oppurtunity to move up if they wanted to. With the 8th pick in the 6th round, the Tennesee Titans selected Will Gulley, one of the safeties that the Jets were targeting. Now, really wanting to select Joey Vincent, the Jets decided that they would try to trade up 10 spots to get Buffalo's pick. With Buffalo having the 10th pick, and the Jets having the 20th pick, Tannenbaum consulted his value chart to determine what he would have to give up. The 10th pick in the 6th round has a numerical value of 23.4. The 20th has a value of 19.4, meaning ther Jets would only have to add 4 points of value to get the pick. If the Jets added their number 27 pick from the 7th round, it would be 0.2 points lower than a perfect match, but hopefully the Bills GM wouldn't mind that. He did. He must have also wanted someone pretty badly. So, Tannenbaum offered him their lower 6th round pick, and their higher 7th round pick, which techincally favored the Bills. He accepted. "With the 170th pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, the New York Jets select Joey Vincent, safety from New Mexico State." With another pick coming up, the 180th overall, the Jets looked at their roster, trying to assess what other positions they should bloster. Linebacker became the obvious choice because of the depth needed when running the 3-4. ILB George Hall became the man the Jets wanted. He was well developed, could stop the run, and had good technique. He could also play special teams, so as long as he lasted a few more picks, he would be their guy. He did. "With the 180th pick in the NFL Draft, the Jets select George Hall, linebacker out of Purdue." |

2007 Off-Season: The 2007 NFL Draft: Round Seven With only one pick remaining in the draft, the Jets set their eyes on improving the team any way they can. The first thing they would try to do is trade the pick for a player that has already established himself as an NFL player. Perhaps a pass-rushing NT that good lessen the risk of selecting a 7th round draftee. The first player the Jets found that would definitely be worth a shot was Bills DT Jason Jefferson. GM Mike Tannenbaum knew that the Bills wouldn't accept just a 7th round pick, so Mike put together a package that the Bills might look at. The Jets offered the bills their 7th-round pick and WR Tim Dwight for Jefferson. However, the Bills weren't willing to take on Dwights salary. So, looking for a team in need of receivers, the Jets targeted the Eagles, the Dolphins, and the Falcons. None of them would accept Dwight's salary. After making a few more offers, the Jets settled on selecting a player in the draft. With no more real needs, the Jets selected the best player avaliable that would provide more depth. "With the 219th selection in the NFL Draft, the New York Jets select Brandon Massey, safety out of Missouri." With that selection, the Jets draft was complete. Rookie camp would begin shortly, meaning that coach Mangini and his staff had a new goal... Put the best team on field. Last edited by JetsIn06 : 01-26-2007 at 02:54 PM. |
