Coastal Carolina remained unbeaten winning 31-17 over a visiting (also undefeated) Bryant team, so a good win on the "Surf Turf"

As a non Missouri fan who hasn't paid attention to anything. . . is there really nobody better than Mauck besides the kid? I mean, Pinkell is a hell of a coach. He's built up a hell of a program. All of that said, I'm not a genius by any stretch of the imagination and I could see this guy wasn't an upper program QB within about 2 games of watching him play. (side note: the two most memorable college football games for me last year were Mizzou vs South Carolina and Clemson vs. Florida St. Both games featured QB's who were pretty terrible find ways to win the game.) I was simply amazed Missouri had the year they had with him at QB. The QB throws for 20 yards against Florida and Mizzou wins? he throws for 97 yards and 2 INT's in the bowl game and you blow someone out? I cheer for CU, a horrific football team. I wouldn't want Maty QBing my team, I'm just stunned there is no other option from "very poor college QB" to "Top QB Prospect" on a team that good. |

Buyout is too big so unless he leaves, we are stuck with him for 2 more years. His fall back is we lost our best RB and every WR to injuries this year and are somehow still in games. The lack of depth on the defensive side is by giving out shit scholarships from Petrino/JL Smith two recruiting classes. Now we have FR Dbs who can't identify who a team's best WR is or when the ball is in the air. |

I think he's made far more right moves than bad moves and most of all he's upgraded their talent ... substantially. Now he's got to develop it, but they've got what they need there to compete on a higher level and be a contender for the conference title in the coming years IMO. Terrible day for him yesterday. No question about that. But looking at the overall job he's done there, I would give him high marks. This is a program that in a very short amount of time went from Phil Fulmer to Lane Kiffin to Derek Dooley and then Jones. That unto itself is a major problem for acquisition of talent. Coaching turnover is almost never good for recruiting. They've got that fixed now IMO. The rest is on the practice field, game repetitions/game experience for players (and that takes time) and it'll come. Before the season I thought they could be a 8/9 win team this year and I still think that's possible, though they will probably have to get it with the bowl game. And he's still coaching with players recruited by the previous regime. He's in the first month of his third season. He's going to win there. He's got to get more time and they're going to give it to him. They've had plenty of coaching turnover since they pushed Fulmer out the door and that didn't work. Tennessee is recruiting as well as it has since it last won the national title. Quote:
I agree Strong deserves a couple more years. I am not sure he gets them. Even though Chad is an aTm grad, I suspect he has always viewed UT as the Ultimate coaching destination, though I doubt you'd ever get those words out of his mouth. Quote:
Spurrier actually wanted to and even attempted to retire last year before SC talked him into coming back. The power play here is he wants SOSjr to be the next coach. Has promised all sorts of things if SC will promise that. Ray Tanner (the back-to-back-to-almost back) baseball national champ coach from a couple years ago is the AD now. By most accounts he is over his head as an AD, and no one bosses Spurrier anyway so...it's a train wreck looking for a bend in the track down there. As a despise-er of SC I hop he hangs around a couple more years and truly leaves the place in shambles equal or worse to those he found them. Side note SOS JR embarrassed himself Friday night in my and many other local's opinions. His daughter was in the homecoming court of her local high school. Far as I can tell this varies a bit regionally, but around here the homecoming court are escorted by their parents not other students. There were 12 girls in the HC court and 10 dads/grandads escorting them. (2 Moms...quite the good turnout) of the 10 dads 9 wore jackets and ties. Sure a few looked borrowed or rarely used..but not Stevie Jr...nope. He wore SC under armour warm-ups and a ball cap to escort his daughter. What is that saying about money and class? Finally, major shout out to my personal target Scott Shaeffer. For as much shit as I love to heap on him Cuse played out of their mind this weekend. Really showed up more than I anticipated. |

After yesterday I disagree. Barring a tremendous winning streak this season, the fanbase is already pretty much over a guy that's being nicknamed "Botch". As a popular phrase put it yesterday, all the "bricks" don't matter if there's no mortar. And he appears to be too watery a mix to actually build anything with, the gameday coaching is atrocious and they're being outcoached at halftime pretty badly. Overhauling the staff this offseason will get him into next year easily but if 6-7 wins is the pace, he won't be around to play Vanderbilt next season. He looks like his ceiling is mid-major and that just isn't going to come close to cutting it. Every bit of the optimism around the program appears to be gone, any good he has done to date -- and they have at least improved since the embarrassment of the Derek Dumbass era, I'll give that much without hesitation -- all of the good will he might have built has now been spent with two epic collapses. He's back at square one, and I seem to be far from alone in feeling that way. Quote:
Agree completely. I was more impressed by their performance in a loss than by a lot of teams that got W's.

You can really see his flaws with the crappy receivers we have.. and I will agree with you. We win because of our defense, that's it. I think you'll see Drew start getting more reps. |

Would be shocked if he's not starting by the end of the year. They've already played that card by not redshirting him. It's only a matter of time. I do have to give the passing game a bit of a break. We lost one of the best rushers in the SEC in week 1 and lost four starters during last week's game. Mauk isn't playing well, but he's playing with an offense that's already half-full of backups and no running threat to keep the defense honest. |

That's why you need to start being able to recruit viable backups at all positions like most SEC teams. Wishful thinking I know... Mauk has always had some top receivers, so with average receivers, you can really start to pick out his flaws... especially when you see Drew Lock and how accurate he can really be. I knew it would be a struggle for us this year.. Brother's injury is really going to hurt. |

UNLV set all kinds of records in whipping Idaho State's ass 80-8, netting Sanchez's first win. Division I-AA team, sure, but the Rebels have had problems with those kinds of teams the last few years.
This is one of two wins I expected on the season, so nice to get one out the gate, and finally dominate someone.

It was a second or two. You can see one of the judges behind the defense coming in to stop the play definitely before the ball is snapped, but the TV mikes don't pick up the whistles at all.
And it having been broadcast on Big Ten Network, there was really no follow-up on what happened there aside from the first display. That and the dude shanked the crap out of his practice try, so they were probably never making that kick.

Couple of thoughts... 1) We need to pump the brakes on the Lock train already. He has looked OK coming in but I have trouble seeing what he has done (scoring wise) any different than Mauk. It isn't Mauk's fault there is no running game whatsoever. Kentucky Game... C/ATT YDS AVG TD INT QBR Maty Mauk 15/30 180 6.0 1 0 60.0 Drew Lock 3/5 47 9.4 0 0 39.3 UConn Game... C/ATT YDS AVG TD INT QBR Maty Mauk 14/22 145 6.6 0 1 36.6 Drew Lock 6/9 40 4.4 0 0 54.5 Arkansas State C/ATT YDS AVG TD INT QBR Maty Mauk 16/36 148 4.1 3 2 51.5 Drew Lock 0/1 0 0.0 0 1 0.0 2) Mauk is 17-5 as the starter. I think you and MBBF are around the same age as me. Mizzou fans booing Mauk are pretty damn fickle to ignore the past with this kid. Claiming superiority to Kentucky and expecting a win because of their name is the same BS all of the other SEC teams have been doing to us the past two years. Maybe Kentucky is a solid football team? Don't get carried away. They squeaked past La-Lafayette, beat a pretty dismal SC on the road, lost a close one at home to a dazzlingly mediocre UF, and now they have a win over Mizzou. Right now -- QB issues, injuries, running game issues -- it seems more likely that Missouri is closer to being the way UK is perceived than it is that Kentucky is a solid team.

Lock gets one series a game.. can't really tell what he would do with a majority of the snaps in a game. It's college football.. look around.. many teams have gone to the next in line when needed. At least give him a half.. I don't boo Mauk.. would just like to see what Lock can do besides one series. |

Yeah I wasn't saying you were booing Mauk. I was saying that the younger fans and bandwagon fans are booing and they need some perspective on the 80's and 90's Tiger teams. Mauk is 17-5 in a little less than 2 season. I don't think I saw 17 wins over the entire period I was at school there plus 3 years! |

At least some of you probably heard about the receiver from Southern U that suffered a serious spinal injury during the game vs UGA. Obviously local coverage of the story has been more prominent than what its gotten nationally and one of the details that I've seen more than once is that Georgia paid for the player's parents to be flown in (presumably from Louisiana)
Now let me be clear -- I've got nothing but good things to say about how UGA, individually & institutionally, has handled themselves during this. Best I can tell, there's pretty much been someone from the school or the program on hand from the ride to the hospital right through his surgery today. And from the sound of it, more than just one someone. Chaplains, athletic admin people, coaches, players, you name it. Now, that possible misunderstanding covered, I'm curious about the rules & regs on this. Can Southern pay for a trip like that, under NCAA rules? Is there an exception that allows another program to pay for it but not the player's school/team itself? I'm guessing there's some sort of emergency situation rule(s) that applies, I'm simply curious what the rule is & how it works.

I think the rule only applies if he wanted and was able to play football again. At that time, I think Southern could seek a waiver for whatever violation you could come up with. If he's just a student, then he can take money from Georgia or Southern or the Saints or whoever. I would imagine that in the instant case, Georgia picked up the bill because of their considerably larger pocket book. I also saw that Richt said he'd call on Georgia fans in a crowdfunding campaign if necessary.

I think I was wondering more along the lines of whether it's something that has black letter rule -- in case of X then Y can be done -- or if it's a waiver type situation. What really put me in the question mindset was noticing that one of the three Southern staff members that remained in Athens was their compliance director. Maybe coincidence, but also maybe a good choice. And, again, I mean zero criticism of any of it. It's just a situation that I realized I really don't know the rules for at all.
