Bob Fitzsimmons to vacate Middleweight Title

Bob Fitzsimmons has decided to focus only on the heavyweight division and not defend his Middleweight title. Previously he had said he would defend the title and fight in the heavyweight ranks, but his goal is to win the Heavyweight Title and he wants to focus only on that.

Welterweight Title Fight
August 29th, 1893

Tommy Ryan 22-1-1 (20)

Mysterious Billy Smith 7-1-3 (7)

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Round 1: Smith started off the round well, but Ryan dominated the middle and end of the round. Smith's nose was bleeding by the end of the round. (Round to Ryan)

Round 2: Smith starts off by landing a crushing uppercut that stuns Ryan, but Ryan quickly comes back and lands a few devastating blows of his own. It was a slugfest and Ryan got the better of it. (Round to Ryan)

Round 3: Not as much action in this round, but it was won more convincingly this time by Ryan. (Round to Ryan)

Round 4: Smith goes down but gets right back up. Ryan unleashes on Smith for the next 2 minutes. Smith catches Ryan with a shot that stops the punishment but with a few seconds left, Smith gets knocked back down and is saved by the bell. At the end of the round, Smith's right eye is really messed up. (Round to Ryan)

Round 5: The fight only goes on for another minute. Ryan continued the onslaught from the previous round. Smith doesn't go down, but the referee sees enough and stops the in-ring murder.

The referee stops the fight at 1:05 of the 5th round...the winner by technical knock out, and STILL UNDISPUTED WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD....TOMMY RYAN!

Tommy Ryan Unstoppable?

Tommy Ryan defeated the undefeated featherweight champion, Young Griffo, to win the vacant welterweight title. Not only did he defeat him, he knocked him out. Mysterious Billy Smith was his first challenger and he destroyed him. Round 4 of their fight was one of the most brutal rounds you'll ever see. Is there anyone out there that can challenge this man? More importantly, is there anyone out there that will at least get into the ring with him?

George Dixon 18-3-6 (15 KO)

Solly Smith 13-0-3 (11 KO)

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Round 1: A simple round of sparring witht he champ scoring more points. (Round to Dixon)

Round 2: Another slow, easy going round. Neither fighter is letting their hands go early in this fight. (Round to Dixon)

Round 3: The crowd is starting to get restless in this one. Both fighters continue to feel the other out and are not going to risk leaving themselves open for an easy counter. The referee did warn Dixon because of a headbutt. (Round to Smith)

Round 4: Another easy going round. This looks like it's going to be a long fight. (Round to Dixon)

Round 5: A thrid of the way through and Dixon is starting to open up his attack. It would seem he was trying to soften up Smith a bit and is now letting his hands go a little. (Round to Dixon)

Round 6: Dixon is outboxing the young Solly Smith and seems content to sit back and out point him. (Round to Dixon)

Round 7: Solly Smith starts to press the action and it gets a response out of Dixon. Probably not the response Smith wanted as Dixon out classes Smith in their exchanges. Smith was also warned for a low blow as the round came to an end. (Round to Dixon)

Round 8: Another round with Dixon out pointing Smith. (Round to Dixon)

Round 9: The crowd really doesn't like what they are seeing right now. They came to see a fight, not a sparring session. (Round to Dixon)

Round 10: For the first time in the fight, Dixon was hurt by a nice shot by Smith near the end of the round. (Round to Smith)

Round 11: Dixon used all of his skill to keep away from Smith in this round. He was still weak in the legs from the end of the 10th. (Round to Smith)

Round 12: With the fight nearing its end, Smith is trying to press the fight but Dixon is outclassing him easily. Dixon, having recovered from the shot that stunned him in the 10th, is going back to simple boxing and out pointing his opponent. (Round to Dixon)

Round 13: Dixon continues to outclass Smith but having been warned of fouling for the 3rd time in the fight, he's coming dangerously close to being disqualified. (Round to Dixon)

Round 14: With two rounds to go, Smith is trying all he can to get inside and pound Dixon but it just isn't happening. (Round to Dixon)

Round 15: The last round was more of the same and the crowd seems more happy to be done with this unnoteworthy fight. A real snoozer. (Round to Dixon)

My score is 12-3 for Dixon

After 15 rounds of action, we go to the referee's decision. He scores the bout 9 rounds to 4 for the winner...and STILL FEATHERWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD....GEORGE "LITTLE CHOCOLATE" DIXON!

Joe Butler 14-1-0 (9)

Goerge "Old Chocolate" Godfrey 14-4-11 (9)

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Round 1: Godfrey starts the fight off with a bang by dropping Butler within the first minute of the fight. Butler gets up and didn't appear to be too hurt from the sudden knock down (Round to Godfrey)

Round 2: Butler regroups and starts fighting his fight. Godfrey never could get any punches off in this round. (Round to Butler)

Round 3: A fight that started off on such a high note has quickly become a slow, uninspired fight. (Round to Godfrey)

Round 4: Godfrey hurt Butler early in the round and Butler spent the remainder of it covering up and running. (Round to Godfrey)

Round 5: The fight picked up in this round. Godfrey gets off to a quick start, but Butler responds and dominates the last 2 minutes. (Round to Butler)

Round 6: The round started off slow but it picked up when Godfrey hurt Butler and put the pressure on. Godfrey knocked Butler down at the very end of the round. (Round to Godfrey)

Round 7: Butler tasted the canvas three times in this round as Godfrey just put the beating to him. Godfrey just tore this man apart. The only thing that saved Butler was the bell as the referee was up to 6 when it rang. (Round to Godfrey)

Round 8: With both of Butler's eyes in horrible shape, the referee stops the fight shortly after the round began.

The fight ends at 0:40 of the 8th round, the winner by technical knockout...GEORGE "OLD CHOCOLATE" GODFREY

James J. Corbett 11-0-2 (2)

Charley Mitchell 29-2-13 (9)

Pre-Fight Commentary: James J. Corbett has not fought since winning the title over a year ago, but Charley Mithcell has not fought in nearly 2 years. His last fight against a notable opponent was in 1889 when he fought then bare-knucles champ John L. Sullivan to a draw. Charley Mitchell is in a word, old. At worst, Corbett is only rusty. This should be a relatively easy defense for Corbett.

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Round 1: The fight starts as expected, with Corbett easily dominating. Mitchell already has tasted canvas when he was dropped mid-round with a wicked hook. (Round to Corbett)

Round 2: The round was easily won by Corbett as he already has Mitchell hurt. (Round to Corbett)

Round 3: Either the champ took a round off or Mitchell has recovered to a point where he's now better than at the start of the fight. A close, even round, but also a very boring round. (Round Even)

Round 4: The champ is now back in control easily winning this round with jabs. He's not landing anythign that's hurting Mitchell, but he's easily out-pointing him now. (Round to Corbett)

Round 5: An even, extremely dull round up until the last 20 seconds when Corbett unloaded on Mitchell to steal the round. (Round to Corbett)

Round 6: One has to wonder if Corbett took this fight too lightly. He's outpointing Mitchell, but the action has slowed to a snail's pace and his punches are not snapping like they did in the first few rounds. (Round to Corbett)

Round 7: Another round round in the books. The crowd is falling asleep out here. (Round to Corbett)

Round 8: Carbon copy of round 7. (Round to Corbett)

Round 9: It looked like another easy outpointing by Corbett, but Mitchell's end of round punching may have saved him this round. (Round Even)

Round 10: Certainly not many people thought this one would make it to the end of the 10th round, but it did. Not like Mitchell has any chance of winnign this one on decision, but perhaps going the distance will be a moral victory for the old-timer. A cut has opened under Mitchell's right eye. (Round to Corbett)

Round 11: A boring round barely taken by the champ. (Round to Corbett)

Round 12: Corbett picks up the pace as he seems to want to finish this fight once and for good. No doing as Mitchell survives the beating he took in this round. (Round to Corbett)

Round 13: Seems like Corbett used all of his energy in the previous round as we go back to the uneventful outpointing. (Round to Corbett)

Round 14: Another round easily won by Corbett. Mitchell has made it to the final round. Will he have enought to take him to the decision? (Round to Corbett)

Round 15: Mitchell wasn't content to just finish the fight, he wanted to end on a good note and he did. He took the fight to Corbett in the final round, trying desperatly to get a KO. He wouldn't, but he would win the round. (Round to Mitchell)

My Score: 12-1-2 for Corbett

After 15 rounds of boxing, the referee has his decision...he scores the bout 10 rounds to 5, for your winner...and STILL UNDEFEATED, UNDISPUTED HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD....JAMES J. CORBETT!!

Post-Fight Comments: A little closer decision then what it looked like, but an easy decision for Corbett. The question now is does Corbett really have want it takes to be champion? A tired, hurt and old Mitchell went the distance with him. How will he handle a young, hungry contender in his prime?

Jimmy Barry 35-0-0 (24)

Billy Plimmer 9-0-1 (5)

Pre-Fight Comments: Billy Plimmer has not fought in over a year while Jimmy Barry has been fighting and has stayed in top shape. Both fighters are nearly identical in ability, except for Barry has much more punching power. That may be the deciding factor in this fight.

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Round 1: It was in effect a shutout as Barry did everything he wanted, and Plimmer just didn't do anything. (Round to Barry)

Round 2: Halfway through the round, Plimmer landed a right flush acorss Barry's chin that took his legs from him. He was able to stay on his feet but spent the rest of the round covering up. (Round to Plimmer)

Round 3: A nice round for Barry. He's recovered from the nice shot he took from Plimmer and is back in control. (Round to Barry)

Round 4: Barry drops Plimmer at the start of the round with an overhand right that opened a cut over his left eye. Plimmer barely makes it back to his feet on the count of 9 and somehow survives an entire round of punishment. (Round to Barry)

Round 5: A good, close round until Barry droped Plimmer again, this time with a corss that seemed to simply knock Plimmer off balance. Plimmer gets right back up but spend the round getting pounded. One-Third through this fight and it doesn't seem like Plimmer is going to make it. He's hurting and he needs to come back strong. (Round to Barry)

Round 6: Barry starts off strong but gets caught by a cross from Plimmer that sends him to the canvas. It was now Barry's turn to go through a round while covering up. That may be the spark Plimmer needs to get back into this fight. And what a brutal fight it's been so far. (Round to Plimmer)

Round 7: Just as Plimmer was working to get back into this fight, Barry had enough and came out like a man on a mission. He caught Plimmer early and hurt him. He then went to work. With a minute left to go, Barry catches Plimmer with a shot thatl leaves Plimmer out on his feet. Barry continued the assault until the referee jumped in and stopped the fight.

The referee calls a halt to the fight at 2:09 of the 7th round...your winner by technical knockout...and NEW UNDISPUTED BANTAMWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD....JIMMY BARRY!

Post-Fight comments: Plimmer put up a heck of fight, but Barry was too much for him. Plimmer never gave up and accomplished on thing. He knocked Barry down. However, this night would be Barry's and he would not be denied it. He came at Plimmer and used his power to hurt Plimmer early and to keep him covering up for most of the fight.

Young Griffo 47-1-15 (26)

George "Kid" Lavigne 19-0-3 (11)

Pre-fight Commentary: This will be Young Griffo's 6th title fight. In his previous 5, he's 4-1, defeating both Goerge Dixon and Torpedo Billy Murphy twice. His lose came to Tommy Ryan. This will be George "Kid" Lavigne's first title fight. The experience alone may be the deciding factor. This will be the classic contest of slugger, George Lavigne, vs. boxer, Young Griffo. Lavigne has more power, but Griffo has more pure skill. If Lavigne hopes to win this one, he better land his punches and not give Griffo a chance to counter-punch.

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Round 1: A solid, close round until the last minute where Griffo was better. A good round to start off the match. (Round to Griffo)

Round 2: Griffo has come out using his skills against Lavigne as he is dodging and countering effectively. (Round to Griffo)

Round 3: Halfway through the round, Lavigne caught Griffo with a hook that hurt him. He wasn't able to jump on Griffo, but he spent the rest of the round in total control. (Round to Lavigne)

Round 4: The round started off with Lavigne still in control of the fight, but halfway through, it seemed like both fighters didn't want to do anything. (Round to Lavigne)

Round 5: It doesn't much closer than this. For each shot landed by one fighter, it was answered with one from his opponent. (Round Even)

Round 6: The fight has slowed to a snail's pace, but neither fighter is taking the lead either. Another round that is too close to call. (Round Even)

Round 7: For the first minute, it was all Griffo but then Lavigne gave Griffo a huge wake up call that caused Griffo's nose to start bleeding. Lavigne took over and as the round was comign to an end, Lavigne landed a combination that left Griffo stunned. (Round to Lavigne)

Round 8: This is becoming Lavigne's fight as he is now pressing the fight. Griffo has no sting on any of his punches and Lavigne is still catching Griffo with nice shots. (Round to Lavigne)

Round 9: Halfway through the round, Lavigne landed a vicious right hook that opened a gash under Griffo's right eye. Griffo got pounded on in this round and I don't think he'll be able to recover. (Round to Lavigne)

Round 10: It would seem as though Lavigne had tired himself out last round and wasn't able to do much. Both fighters look tired as neither was able to carry this round. (Round Even)

Round 11: Another really close round. Unless this fight gets stopped at some point, this is going to be interesting decision. (Round Even)

Round 12: Lavigne landed a huge hook that staggered Griffo early in the round. Girffo did an good job pulling himself together to finish out the round and make it close. (Round to Lavigne)

Round 13: Another round where Lavigne jumps out by landing a huge shot, but doesn't capitalize on it. He is tired out there. This time Griffo comes back and actually wins the round with a few flurries at the end. (Round to Griffo)

Round 14: With 2 round left, it doesn't look liek either has enough energy to put the other away. Griffo does a little more in this slow round. If he wins round 15 as well, he may just steal this one. (Round to Griffo)

Round 15: A round just like the last one but with Lavigne doing just a bit more than Griffo. This is going to be close. (Round to Lavigne)

I have it: 7-4-4 for Lavigne

After 15 rounds of action, we go to the referee's score card....he scores the bout 7 rounds to 6 rounds for your winner and the undisputed Lightweight Champion of the World......GEORGE "KID" LAVIGNE!!

Post-Fight Commentary: A very close a decision. Now doubt a rematch will occur in the future. The deciding factor was Lavigne's power as he took the middle rounds by hurting Griffo badly. Griffo almost stole it with the last few rounds. Had he won the 15th round, he would have won the fight.

You might be thinking of the wrong Jack Dempsey (if you're not really into boxing). The Jack Dempsey you are probably thinking of is the heavyweight that fought in the 1910's and 1920's (who beat Jess Willard for the title by destroying his face). This Jack Dempsey was a middleweight. There's a couple of other boxers who had the same name.

There's a Joe Walcott that fought in the 1890's, and then there is "Jersey" Joe Walcott of the mid 1900's. There's also another George Godfrey who fought in the early 1900's.

- Italics fights are ones that will be simmed. I'm kind of working on a system where I "sim" every fight. Basically I'll create several "training horses" who basically are there to get beat. I'll have them face fighters in the DB. For instance, the Joe Walcott vs. Mike Harris fight. Mike Harris would be a "training horse". I'll have Joe Walcott face off with this "training horse" until I get a result that closely matches the one that really happened. What this will let me do is use the game's rankings and stats so I could post rankings after every 2-month sim. (When fights start happening more regularly, I'll go back to 1-month sim period). And I'll be easy for me to save and post a fighter's fight history and their personal stats and such. The problem is it is going to take, probably, several sim years to really have a good rankings list and whatnot. Which is fine, because it doesn't seem like there were any real rankings and stats back then anyway.

- I hope I used the term "training horse" correctly.

Peter Maher 19-4-1 (10)

George "Old Chocolate" Godfrey 15-4-11 (10)

Pre-Fight Commentary: "Old Chocolate" is starting to live up to the name as the 41 year old will do battle with Peter Maher again. He's trying for one more drive to a title shot and Maher is an obsticle. Both fighters are in great condition and we're expecting to see both of them slug it out.

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Round 1: A slow round, but halfway through Maher drilled Godfrey with a right hook that stunned him for a bit. (Round to Maher)

Round 2: Maher came out and started landing punches, but he left himself open and Godfrey caught him and dropped him. Maher gets up on the count of 8 and covers up for most of the round. (Round to Godfrey)

Round 3: The knockdown seems to have given Godfrey some confidence as he's gone on the offensive now. He outslugs Maher in this round. (Round to Godfrey)

Round 4: This fight is now living up to it's expectations. Godfrey gets some shots in, Maher gets some shots in. With about 30 seconds left, Maher landed a crushing uppercut and then a huge hook. Godfrey stayed on his feet, but he's hurt now. (Round to Maher)

Round 5: Maher starts off the round strong and then Godfrey starts making a comeback. Not quite enough as Maher still landed harder shots. (Round to Maher)

Round 6: The round started off slow but then Maher landed a few nice shots in the last minute to take the round. (Round to Maher)

Round 7: Maher spent most of this round landing at will. Godfrey put up little defense and no offense. (Round to Maher)

Round 8: Godfrey's production has really dropped off and he is tired. It looks like age has finally caught up to this man. The 41 year old looks like he may not have the enrgy to finish this one. Maher does another round of almost landing at will. (Round to Maher)

Round 9: Godfrey comes out. Was he saving it. He lands several good shots, but just like Maher did in round 2, he left himself open and got caught. Maher landed a cross that dropped Godfrey. He got up on the count of 6 and was able to effectively cover up the rest of the round. (Round to Maher)

Round 10: A lackluster round from both fighters. Godfrey did a little more than Maher. (Round to Godfrey)

Round 11: Another quiet round, and again Godfrey scores a few more points. Both fighters might have hit their wall. (Round to Godfrey)

Round 12: Both fighters come out with a little more fire. It goes back and forth and at the end of the round, it looks even to me. (Round Even)

Round 13: In the opening seconds of the 13th round, Maher drops Godfrey and Godfrey was just too tired to get back up. Maher wins this one by knock out.

The fight ends at 0:25 of the 13th Round, the winner by knock out, PETER MAHER!

Bob Fitzsimmons 36-2-15 (31)

Joe Chonyski 16-3-0 (10)

Pre-Fight Commentary: Joe Chonyski hasn't fought since his lose to George Godfrey about a year ago while Bob Fitzsimmons has been active. Regardless of the layoff, Chonyski is reportedly in top condition.

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Round 1: A good back and forth round. Chonyski controled the first half while Fitzsimmons came alive in the second half. (Round Even)

Round 2: Another good, close round. This time Fitzsimmons edged out Chonyski. (Round to Fitzsimmons)

Round 3: Fitzsimmons started off the round landed several shots. Chonyski tried to comeback, but was rocked by Fitzsimmons in the last minute of the round. (Round to Fitzsimmons)

Round 4: A close round again, but as in the second round, Fitzsimmons did a little more than Chonyski. (Round to Fitzsimmons)

Round 5: Chonyski comes alive in the first minute, dominating the action. He seemed to be heading towards an easy win for the round when Fitzsimmons caught him and just started an assault that left Chonyski with a cut under his left eye. (Round Even)

Round 6: The fight is now what we wanted to see. Both fighters are slugging it out with neither gaining the upperhand. (Round Even)

Round 7: The action is dying down a bit. The slugfest continues, but Fitzsimmons has gained back the advantage. (Round to Fitzsimmons)

Round 8: Fitzsimmons is starting to widen the gap as he's taken full control of this fight. (Round to Fitzsimmons)

Round 9: The action picked back up in this round. Fitzsimmons wins the round, but Chonyski shows he's not going anywhere has he pressed the action in the middle of the round. Fitzsimmons has reopened the cut under Chonyski's left eye. (Round to Fitzsimmons)

Round 10: A close back and forth round of not much action. (Round Even)

Round 11: Fitzsimmons opens the round by stunning Chonyski, but he regroups quickly and lands a perfect combination that drops Fitzsimmons to the canvas! He gets up on the count of 8 and Chonyski went to work. (Round to Chonyski)

Round 12: In the beginning of the round, Chonyski held control but Fitzsimmons came back in the second half of the round. (Round Even)

Round 13: Nothing from Chonyski in this round. Fitzsimmons totally dominated it. (Round to Fitzsimmons)

Round 14: Again, Chonyski offers no offense as Fitzsimmons goes to work. Fitzsimmons landed a crushing blow in the last minute of the round and Chonyski could not beat the count.

The fight ends at 2:18 of the 14th Round, the winner by knock out, BOB FITZSIMMONS!

Tommy Ryan 22-1-1 (20)

Joe Walcott 31-1-4 (20)

Pre-Fight Commentary: Tommy Ryan has not fought i about a year and a half while Joe Walcott has been active. Tommy Ryan has much more power than Walcott, but other than that they are similar. The time off for Ryan may be the deciding factor in this bout.

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Round 1: Ryan shows now sign of ring rust as he comes out and completely controls the first round. (Round to Ryan)

Round 2: Walcott is shutout this round as he couldn't do a thing in this round. Ryan dominates and outclasses Walcott. (Round to Ryan)

Round 3: Walcott starts off the round strong, but Ryan gets his footing and wins back the round in the last latter 2 minutes. (Round to Ryan)

Round 4: With each round, Walcott seems to gain more confidence. The two fought hard in this round. (Round Even)

Round 5: A little less action in this round with it being close again. So far, neither fighter has landed anything powerful and the last two rounds have been very close. (Round Even)

Round 6: Walcott jumps out in this round and starts going to work on Ryan. Ryan was pretty content to just cover up and try to ride it out. (Round to Walcott)

Round 7: Walcott agains jumps out and starts throwing left and right. He was easily leading the round when with 30 seconds left to go in the round, Ryan caught Walcott with a combination that drops him to the canvas, not to mention split open a cut over Walcott's right eye. He gets up on the count of 6 but he was hurt badly. (Round to Ryan)

Round 8: Ryan, knowing that Walcott was hurt, just jumped all over him. He was unable to knock him back down, but he did a lot of damage. (Round to Ryan)

Round 9: The action dies back down, but Ryan still holds total control over this one. Walcott's cut was closed before the round. (Round to Ryan)

Round 10: Even at this point, it would seem that Walcott's going to need a knock out to win it. But not much happened in this round. Ryan stole the round with a flurry at the end. (Round to Ryan)

Round 11: Another round with Ryan staying in control. (Round to Ryan)

Round 12: Walcott started off strong, but Ryan comes on and wins the second half of the round. (Round Even)

Round 13: The action picked up in this round. Walcott started off strong, but got stunned by Ryan who took over but with 30 seconds left, Walcott again came back. (Round to Ryan)

Round 14: This was Ryan's most impressive round thus far with Walcott not able to do anything. Walcott needs a knock out to win this one. (Round to Ryan)

Round 15: Walcott tried to go for the KO but Ryan used his ability to just outclass Walcott and win this round easily. (Round to Ryan)

I have it scored 11-1-3 for Ryan

After 15 rounds of action, the referee has tallied his score. He has the bout scored 12 rounds to 1 with 2 even for the winner...and STILL UNDEFEATED, UNDISPUTED WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD.....TOMMY RYAN!

Tommy Ryan 24-1-1 (21)

"The Nonpariel" Jack Dempsey 23-4-16 (17)

Pre-Fight Commentary: This is Ryan's second title defense in only a couple of months, but he's facing a fighter that is long passed his prime and shouldn't give him too much trouble. A prime Dempsey versus a prime Ryan would have been one of the great fights, but only Ryan is in his prime and Dempsey should have retired a year or two ago.

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Round 1: As expected, the round was low in action but Ryan controled it. The two fighters spent most of the round trying to figure the other one out. (Round to Ryan)

Round 2: Only seconds into the round and Ryan drops Dempsey to the canvas and opened a cut over his left eye. Dempsey jumps right back up but gets smothered in punches. He spent the round covering up and getting pelted with punches until the referee jumped in and stopped the fight near the end of the round.

The referee stops the fight at 2:52 of the 2nd Round, your winner by technical knock out and STILL UNDISPUTED WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD....TOMMY RYAN

Post-Fight Commentary: A much shorter fight than expected. Dempsey gets stopped in the 2nd round. Ryan wins this fight in convincing manner.

George "Kid" Lavigne 20-0-3 (11)

Young Griffo 48-2-15 (26)

Pre-Fight Commentary: A rematch of their very close decision fight from last year. Griffo the boxer vs. Lavigne the slugger. In their last fight, Lavigne's power seemed to be the deciding factor as he won the middle rounds by rocking Griffo a couple of times. Will his power advantage over Griffo be the deciding factor again, or will Griffo's boxing ability shine through.

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Round 1: Very slow round with both fighters just trying to find their groove. (Round Even)

Round 2: Another close round. A little more action but both fighters are remaining cautious in the opening rounds. (Round Even)

Round 3: The first half of the round was even, with both landing a shot here and there. Then, Griffo put it into gear as he started sticking the jab and landed a couple of power shots. (Round to Griffo)

Round 4: Griffo comes out and tries to continue what occured at the end of round 3, but he was met by a prepared Lavigne this time. "Kid" landed some nice shots that kept Griffo off balance for much of the round. (Round to Lavigne)

Round 5: A close round with the action going back and forth. Lavigne does just a bit more than Griffo, though. (Round to Lavigne)

Round 6: Another close round, but not much action in this one. Griffo this time does a bit more than Lavigne. (Round to Griffo)

Round 7: The crowd is starting to get restless as the last two rounds have been mostly duds. Hardly any action in this round. (Round Even)

Round 8: The crowd boos the champion as he just does nothing in this round. This allowed Griffo to pick his punches. (Round to Griffo)

At the halfway point (kind of), I have it 3-2 with 3 even for Griffo. The ringside expert, Dan Cuoco, has it 6-2 for Griffo

Round 9: Another lackluster round with Lavigne sitting back and doing nothing and Griffo picking a few shots. (Round to Griffo)

A lot of people were excited for this rematch, but so far it's been largely a huge dud.

Round 10: The fighters wake up a bit as the action picks up. Lavigne is finally throwing some punches, but again Griffo does just enough to stay ahead for the round. (Round to Griffo)

Round 11: Griffo was rocked by a hard right hook halfway through the round and that may have been the spark Lavigne needed as he clearly wins this round. (Round to Lavigne)

Round 12: So far, this was the most uneventful round of the fight, and that's saying something. (Round Even)

Round 13: A good round with Lavigne showing some drive but Griffo dominated by keeping his distance and firing off a lot of shots. (Round to Griffo)

With 2 rounds to go, I have Griffo ahead far enough that Lavigne would need a KO to retain his title. Ringside expert, Dan Cuoco, also has Griffo ahead.

Round 14: Griffo used his boxing skill to keep away from Lavigne and bounced shot after shot off of Lavigne. (Round to Griffo)

Round 15: Lavigne went all out for the KO, but he was just too tired by now to get it done. A very close round again. (Round Even)

Well, I have a lot of even rounds, mostly due to inactivity between both fighters. Will be an interesting decision. I have it 7-3 with 5 even for Young Griffo. If the ref scored it the way I did, but gave those evens to Lavigne, he keeps his championship. However, ringside expert, Dan Cuoco, has it scored 10-5 for Griffo.

After 15 rounds of boxing, our referee has tallied his decision. He scores the bout 10 rounds to 4 for the winner....and NEW UNDISPUTED LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD....YOUNG GRIFFO!!

Post-Fight Commentary: Well, they go 1-1 for the Lightweight title. Chances are people may want a third one to decide the "fued", but after this dud, would anyone want to actually watch it?

John L. Sullivan's Top 5

This will be a regular feature. Former World Heavyweight Champion, John L. Sullivan, will provide us with a list of his top 5 on a subject of his choosing. This issue's topic is...

The Top 5 Most Brutal Rounds

John L. Sullivan has compiled his top 5 most brutal rounds in recent boxing history. Here is how they come out. (In the boxer A vs. boxer B, boxer A was the one doing the damage while boxer B was the one getting pounded)

Number 5: January 25th, 1894: Round 1 of James J. Corbett vs. Charley Mitchell - Most brutal opening round in recent memory. Mitchell hung in for the decision, but he went through hell that first round.

Number 4: December 13th, 1893: Round 7 of George "Old Chocolate" Godfrey vs. Joe Butler - Butler was dropped three times in this round as Godfrey pounded away with little resistance.

Number 3: August 29th, 1893: Round 4 of Tommy Ryan vs. Mysterious Billy Smith - At the beginnign of the round, Smith's right eye didn't have a mark on it, at the end, it had a cut over it and it was swollen to the size of a baseball. Ryan just let loose on Smith in that round.

Number 2: February 6th, 1894: Round 7 of Jimmy Barry vs. Billy Plimmer - Could have even put round 4 of this fight on this list as well. Plimmer got bounced around the ring this whole fight, but it was this final round that did a lot of damage. Barry just tore him apart until.

And the number 1 most brutal round is

January 18th, 1895: Round 2 of Tommy Ryan vs. "The Nonpariel" Jack Dempsey: Dempsey was dropped in the opening seconds. He got up, but went through 2 1/2 minutes of pure hell until the referee finally jumped in and stopped it.

And there you have it, John L. Sullivan's Top 5 Most Brutal Rounds. Next issue's topic will be the Top 5 Worst Rounds. Surely he has a couple to pick from in the Griffo - Lavigne rematch.
