August 19, 1982: Ogai Yamazaki (HAR) hits his 2000th hit of his career in a 3-0 loss to Colorado. He is currently 16th all time in FOOL history for hits in his career.
Meanwhile, over in the CL.... August 23, 1982: Napa Valley heads into Brooklyn holding on to a one game lead over Baltimore in the division. They absolutely are unable to get anything done however against Reed "Porky" Bell. Bell throws a no hitter, allowing only 1 walk vs the Winemakers. The cheers could be heard in Baltimore as coupled with a Gotham's win, it allowed them to tie up the CL at least momentarily. |

The Winemakers were the Copperheads of Texas for a long time before Teach named them the Travelers. They've had 2 seasons of over 80 wins in their history, have never made the playoffs and were in second just once in their history and yes, they had a human owner then but they went through a good decade or so of disrepair and neglect. I think what she's done there is not just laudable, but pretty damn astounding considering she joined in the middle of the Valdosta domination and at the time when other teams were surging. Not saying that they'll seal the deal on this one..but...in any case, they're a serious ballclub and I tip my hat to them.

Glad to know that my initial thoughts about Baltimore were correct...among other teams...I was guessing, but it was a glance and nothing more. But seems the cursory glance was all that was needed to predict this race.
But I was wrong about the closeness of it all, I guess. It's a tooth and nail battle. All the better that way. Last edited by Young Drachma : 10-31-2008 at 10:10 PM. |

Congratulations to Hartford, who are the RL champions the last season before expanded playoffs kick in. Napa Valley currently has a magic number of 8 before they can possibly enter the playoffs for the first time in franchise history (Dating back to 1961 when they were in Appleton). Napa Valley, Boston, Long Island and Wyoming are the only franchises to have not ever made the playoffs. |

The Napa Valley September schedule:
1 @ New York 3 @ Atlanta 3 vs Rio Grande 3 @ Wyoming The Baltimore September Schedule 1 vs Toronto 3 vs Brooklyn 3 @ New York 3 vs Atlanta They do not face each other, both play 3 vs the Third place Firecrackers. Otherwise Napa Valley's remaining schedule is against the bottom three teams in the CL even if they are mostly on the road. |

Baltimore's slide continues in the worst possible way. They travel to New York, but lose 4-3. Flores takes the loss, Sukarno gets the win for New York and Cash with the save. Home Runs for the following: Lehman (BAL), Costa (BAL), Liao (NYH), Pila (NYH), and Pila (NYH) again. Napa Valley welcomes Rio Grande to town, just in time to watch Rio grande's coach Cringer have a melt down... Napa Valley can clinch it here.. but Cringer lets all hell loose in the clubhouse before the game and Rio Grande pulls out the win 3-1, to keep the CL race alive for another day. |

Baltimore manages to catch their second wind as they realize every game from here on out are do or die games. They score 3 in the top of the 8th to win 4-1 over New York. Hardee with the win and Villegas gets the save. Burton loses his 18th game of the season for New York. Walls (NYH) with the only HR in the game. Napa Valley can once again clinch the whole thing at home vs Rio Grande. They score 2 in the second, 1 in the third but then lose that lead over the next three innings as Rio Grande takes two in a row from the CL league leading Winemakers 5-4. Adams with the win, Roy with the loss. B. Robinson saves his second game of the season for Rio Grande. Napa Valley's magic number is still stuck at 1. |

Rio Grande and Napa Valley face off in the final game of their three game series.. Can RG sweep them here?
Their offense comes out of the gates blazing, and they go up to an early 4-1 lead after 3 innings. Their pitching staff locks down, and they hold on to a 4-3 Win over Napa Valley. Joe Hart takes the loss for the Winemakers, Miner gets his 14th victory of the year for the Roadrunners. Duncan with the save. Can Baltimore keep alive for yet another game versus New York? |

The answer is unfortunately no for the Gothams.. they go down 3-1 to New York as Duffy wins his 10th game of the season. Brown takes the loss for the Gothams.
The Napa Valley Winemakers are the 1982 Continental League champions and for the first time in their franchise history have made it to the post season! |

Thank you sir! I wanted to mix it up a bit...because I run the risk of making them look the same. Though admittedly of late, the same teams win so I don't have to do much. So it's fun when new teams get in there, because then I have to figure out to differentiate them.

Question and I just noticed this. The Fool classic champ doesnt pick last in the draft.
So when we expand to playoffs next year the team with the best record might not make it past the first round but yet would pick last still. Is their anyway we address that one? |

It's like real life in that way...and I say it should stay that way. I mean, it's based on record, not based on playoff performance (draft order, I mean) I mean, I guess we could change it. But it's sorta muddled and as someone who pushed buttons for a living, I'll say that it can get hard to remember to do it when you're trying to push the file out and stuff. I'd suggest we keep it status quo, rather than making it any different.

That is a NFL thing. Baseball draft is always reverse record. So your team has the best record, you draft last regardless if you win the league championship. When the playoffs expand, that shouldn't affect the draft order any. Now if that is something the board would -like- to change, then that can certainly be held for discussion, but I don't believe MLB does it the same way the NFL does. |
