New York Whitewashed by Morales
Tuesday, September 8th, 1970: "He was kind of teasing them with his offspeed stuff and his fastball was moving everywhere," the Spring skipper said after Mauro Morales shut out the New York Legends 7-0 on a 6-hit masterpiece.

Morales registered 10 strikeouts and issued 2 walks in a gem of a performance.

"We just didn't swing the bats very well... or he just pitched good, whichever way you want to look at it," said the New York manager after the defeat.

On his stats sheet for the year Morales shows a 21-8 record, 33 starts, 248.1 innings, 249 strikeouts and a 2.61 ERA.

Franco Smacks 3 Out of the Park
Thursday, September 17th, 1970: Bombs away!
New York bombardier Esteban Franco set his sights on the stands and blasted three balls over the fence in a 23-8 win over the Portland Grocers. It was a powerful performance that should keep the fans at Legends Ballpark buzzing for days.

He spoke to the writers in the postgame press room and said, "I guess you could say I was a good guesser today... especially on the last one... I was ahead in the count, so I got set for a certain pitch... and got it... all of it."

For the game the New York right fielder had 4 hits in 5 at-bats, drove in 8 and scored 4 runs.

E. Franco hit a two-run home run off S. Durango in the 1st, hit a three-run home run off S. Durango in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, walked in a run in the 5th, hit a two-run home run off J. Medina in the 7th and grounded out in the 8th.

Franco is hitting .271 this season with 45 home runs, 129 RBIs and 131 runs scored. He has 163 hits in 601 at-bats.

Spring and New York end the season tied for the final playoff spot!

As Spring led the regular season series 18 to 15, they will have homefield advantage in a best of 3 playoff series vs New York.

Game 3 looks to be:

Scott Callahan for New York (3-20 11.20 ERA this season)
vs
Robinson CHavez for Spring (13-16 4.73 ERA this season)

so kind of huge edge for Spring here.

The 1970 playoffs are set, and once again we have 2 Canadian teams representing the CL (perhaps it should be renamed the Canadian League!)

London Bishops (89-73) vs Balzac Ticklers (91-71)

New York Legends (91-74) vs Virginia Beach Surf (95-67)

A little off topic...but I drove through Balzac last weekend....it's everything you would expect from a place with such a name!!!

Ya, it's like 200 people, but it's 5 minutes north of Calgary so they just built a huge mega-mall there. So do you like in the area? I live in Cochrane, 20 minutes from Balzac, did you happen to stop at the Shell station on 567 and 22, with the RV campground? that's where I work!

I'm so glad to be back in the playoffs, let alone win the division. I thought I was sliding into the abyss there after getting lucky with the initial roster but it looks like I might know a little something about this baseball thing. And I actually filled out my roster with more than 9 fielders and 9 pitchers so not only did I not crash late, I surged. I sure hope that bodes well for the playoff run, I would be thrilled to take home a championship after being close so many times.

Hurray for Balzac!!!!
