Quite disappointed with the calls (and lack of them in many instances) in the Caps vs. Habs series thus far. Not saying that the fix is in, but it almost appears that the ref's may at least subconsciously be giving the Caps the close calls. This from an impartial viewer because I don't care for either team.

Maybe. I'm ok with that actually. But if you aren't going to call a forearm to the face one one side, you damned well don't call a minor shot to the back of the shoulder on the other side. Just an ugly way to end a game IMHO. |

If Chicago beats Nashville, every series would be 1-1 after two games. Remarkable.

Even better, of the 15 games played so far, all but one have been decided by one goal (not including empty netters). And that game was the second Wing vs. Coyotes game, where the winner was scored with only 6 minutes to go in the third. There has not been one bad game yet. |

The Foote hit was called because he drove Ortmeyer into the post in an effort to "accidentally" dislodge the net while the Sharks had a scoring chance in front. Infraction that interferes with scoring chance= OT penalty call. Short of death or dismemberment, that's the only way one gets called. |

The Devils were so sloppy in the third period and overtime. They don't control the puck, they don't cleanly get it out of their zone, and they don't set up an offense at all. Brodeur bailed them out time and time again, but he couldn't do it forever. I hate watching the Devils in the playoffs now. They're ugly.

What happened? NHL.com isn't helping, they showed Clowe scoring the OT winner 51 seconds in, and the Sharks winning 1-0... now it's 1-0 for the Avs, but 1 OT goal for the Sharks.

Sharks had control of the puck in their own zone, and to avoid the forecheck, Boyle backhanded it behind the net. Only he missed "behind the net" and put it in his own goal.

From the sublime to the ridiculous is but a single poor backhanded pass.
Just an absurd way for San Jose to lose after all that. |

I think 51 shots really tells the story of the game tonight. Anderson was obviously magnificent but there were too many soft wristers and not enough patience in the offensive zone from what I saw of the second half of the game. Sharks would be a lot better taking 30 shots of a better quality IMO.
Heartbreaking way to lose though. Maybe there is a curse. Last edited by bhlloy : 04-18-2010 at 11:56 PM. |

Anderson was magnificent, but I think the real issue was what Drew Remenda was harping on all night - the Sharks never got anyone in front of Anderson. The few times they did, the Avs got lucky or Anderson was even more brilliant.

Chris Phillips tells Dan Boyle to get back to him when his own goal costs his team a Stanley Cup. Bah.
Vince - definitely the case. If I'm McClelland, I'm putting Ryan Clowe in Heatley's spot on the top line (if Heatley isn't back) and telling him to sit in front of the net all night. If Heatley is back, then he needs to be persuaded to do the same. |

I would agree re: Clowe, but he's doing amazing work along the boards in Colorado's zone. I'd have him continue doing what it is he's doing, and just harping on everyone else to crash the crease. Hard to say that I was disappointed in anything else the Sharks did all game...they really played phenomenally after the first period.

Every time the Devils get a top seed I always end up disappointed. It's like their MO has become "let everyone take target practice on Brodeur and eventually we'll get an opportunity". I know it's been like 10 years, but I wish they would bring back Scott Stevens to knock some Flyers the fuck out.

This series is far from over. Marty can take over games like he did in the 3rd period last night and the Flyers have a knack for not showing up for periods (games) at a time. |

Sharks game was just bizarre. I'm watching the game thinking "well, at least the Avs are going to learn from this. This is how teams play when they want a title. I sit down to watch the Sharks score a goal in OT and they do. . . on themselves.
If I were a Sharks fan, I'm not sure I'd be able to watch a news story or anything about hockey until the next game started. What horrible, horrible luck. FWIW, Anderson was brilliant, but the Avs just got lucky. The Sharks had more than enough scoring chances and deflections to get a goal or 3. |

Avalanche have to get better, for sure. They are really missing Mueller...and now it looks like Hejduk will miss time too.
that said, Anderson was a motherfucking pimp last night, and the Avalanche could very easily be up 3-0 in the series.

Really hope the Bruins come out w/ some fire tonight, and pot the first goal of the game. The fans really need something to get them into this. Vanek being out is big, but the B's still need Krejci and Sturm to show up tonight to make a difference.

I am not sure why this should be stunning. Phoenix is the higher seed, they got 107 points in the regular season and Detroit is coming into the playoffs with a rookie goalie. I think if Phoenix wins will be considered an upset, but shouldn't be considered a huge or stunning upset by any stretch of the imagination. Detroit losing to Toronto in 1993 was an "UN-BEE-LEEB-ABBA!" {tummy poke} upset, Detroit losing to San Jose in 1994 was a stunning upset (still ranks as the worst ever from my perspective), Detroit losing to LA in 2001 was a big upset, Detroit losing to Anaheim in 2003 was a big upset, Detroit losing to Edmonton in 2006 was a big upset. Phoenix has out played Detroit in all but 3 periods of hockey so far (1st period Game 1 and the 2nd and 3rd periods of Game 2). The only line Detroit has going in the Zettberg line and that wont be enough. Howard isn't the reason they are behind, but he hasn't been great either. He is not making the "timely save", which is often the key to playoff success. The game winning goal in Game 1 and the 4th goal yesterday were particularly bad. I don't fault him for too many of the other goals, but he's overplaying things and hasn't looked sharp or all that confident.

Maybe, I think a lot of it has to do with going for quality guys and not necessarily guys who are incredibly well known. Most MLB, NBA and NFL announcers are awful. Most NHL announcers are at least decent, if not good.
