Well I've made it down to the 1st level of the Orcish Mines, but after dispatching the welcoming horde of orcs I have found a portal to the Bailey, a vault that I'm not sure I've ever been in before. Gotta take the opportunity to explore it though, so will later today I hope.

Took the opportunity and paid for it with Octowizzy2's life. Was doing quite well actually and then the bad boys started showing up-orc warlords and knights-I kept them confused with the cloud, but couldn't seem to do enough damage with the poison to put them away then got semi surrounded when I didn't move up to fill the empty space before a corridor and that was it. But it was worth it to see what was in the bailey for future characters.

So I start Octowizzy3 and after picking up a short sword of venom on level 1 of the dungeon, I find a spellbook, which would be the first I've found in this challenge. I take a few steps closer and boom there's an altar of Trog. He hates magic and loves to destroy spellbooks. Including this one.

Well the pain doesn't last long. I move quickly down to level 3 and soon find gnolls and Ijyb or however he spells it. I try dragging a gnoll up the stairs, and he hits me twice...with a cursed 0/-3 halberd and I'm dead.

*sigh* XXII did well until he opened a door and Jessica was there. She blinked through it, slowed me and killed me. The difficulty level of this game is horrible. That was one of the first rooms on level TWO.

heh. I just joined the necromancer religion. Then a kobold shoots exploding darts at me from across the room. And I die. Then I immediately am raised as a zombie. Oh well, I asked for it.

Indeed they were.

Octodysseus IV makes it to the fifth floor before getting sniped by a centaur archer. Had a nice +3+2 Trident of Distortion, and a Ring of Wizardry.

He's my highest score so far at... 586 (embarrassing)

Yeah its Xom, the crazy insane god, so of course his altar is going to be crazy and insane too. There were some weird looking walls or whatever around the altars? Make sure you check for traps next to them cause he likes to laugh at things like that.

Centaurs are nasty-but a Mephitic Cloud spell should have confused him long enough to get close for hand...er tentacle to hand combat or to run away/get into a better position to distance attack.

good luck with the next version.

Well that really made all the difference. The monsters in the tiles game are much easier and having 13 instead of 3 magic makes a HUGE difference!

Made it to character level 5. Ran into a ghost of me so ran and ran downstairs. Being REALLY cuatious. I see jackals . I have cloud spell now so I cast it. It explodes aruond me. TWICE. So cast Cure poison. It fails FIVE times and makes me sick when it hadn't failed once before.
Jackal bites me once and I die.

total crap.

Ooof that just horrible luck-what happened with the spell exploding around you? Did you accidently cast it on yourself or did it hit a wall in front of you that you didn't see? Usually you get a warning if the spell is going to bounce off something in front of you and hit you.

I hit f...where it targetted the jackal across the room. The second time I doublechecked because I forgot about that. But no I was SURE I did it right. And the cure spell failling 5 times. That is NOT bad luck. SOmething caused that. Something shitty. I wonder if something I had did it. Do shields and things cause spells to fail?

Because spell failure was what happened. The really bad kind. Cause the cure poison spells they actually made me sick each time.

Okay a lot of possibilities from looking at the morgue file and from what you said, but I don't know enough about some thing I'm going to talk about to know for sure.

1-You've got a cursed large shield on which may be effecting your spell failure rates-look at your failure rates on your three spells-all very high including mephitic cloud at 100% failure.

2-I think you correctly targetted with mephitic cloud but you failed to cast it-I'm assuming you were at the 100% failure rate when you cast it, but can't tell for sure from the morgue file. The first level of miscast failure (there are three for each school of spell) casts the cloud on you instead. However the morgue file does not show you as confused as you would be if hit by the cloud-that would mean you could not cast spells at all. You also take poison damage.

3-You are glowing. that means you are magically contaminated. That comes from miscasting too many spells as well as other means. It says in the morgue file that you are only slightly contaminated, so it shouldn't be having too much effect on you-do you remember what color the word glow was during this final battle-because there are levels of contamination and the higher levels are very bad-mutations and damage to you. I am too unfamiliar with contamination to know how much of an effect it might have had on you here. Maybe someone with more experience with this can chime in here? If you get contaminated from miscasting a spell, its always a good idea to rest until it goes away if you can.

Yet another reason I stay away from pure spellcasters-using up your food to cast spells and then things like contaminations and miscasts.

Actually the large shield would be affecting spell failure rates significantly (regardless of the fact that it is cursed).

well it was to celebrate the arrival of the new race the Octopode-who can only be wizardy types.

and no I can't do that because then no one would play the venommage anymore.

Oh and he found a Ring of Wizardry. I need to be careful with this guy!

Finally had a game!

Spoiler

Highlights. Tewrence chased me around and I ran and ran and ran and just gave up and went downstairs. I employed that tactics twice. So glad there are easy monsters on ALL the levels.

Got chased back UP by Eustice or whatever blinking aroundl

Got lotsa hitpoints and spells then went back up and SCREW YOU TERRENCE! SUCK CLOUD!

Orc Wizard/Orc Priest Orc Wrrior group. Clouded to the max. They stumbled over each other droping their weapons and I stung them while confused then threw things at them.

Skybeast was interesting. Glad I took it from afar.

Centaur...this was scary. I poisonauraed him in a corridor which poisoned me. Then when he madvanced and hit me I read a scroll of fear to drive him away! then hit him again with spells

Hill Giant. ...Luckily I was far away from him when I noticed him and it was open (unlike the centaur). I clouded him many times and Stung him. He approached once I hit him BAM but he toko me to half. SCROLL OF FEAR again. Then Clouded again. threw things but once he got to red I just went up and hit him.

My short sword of draining was awesome oh yes I got that off of DEAD MOFO TERRENCE!

I went downstairs and almost immediately found a Jelly. EEK! I really thought I was dead as I was out of fear scrolls. It didn't seem to take much damage from poison spells and it did acid damgae. I ran. ranrnaran up a corridor. At the other end was a water moccasin who sandwiched me in. I stopped and thought. I was already under half. I then read a teleportation scroll. Drank my last cure potion while both were swinging and missing. Then I radiated posion too
I then teleported finally into an empty big room with scrolls.

Well...it wasn't empty. A phantom appeared. I hit him and he double hit back so I ran like hell for stairs.

Next I met a Necrophage. hahahahahahahahAHAHAHAHAHAHA...I was wearing an amulet of protection from corrosion! so it didn't harm me.
It would have been nasty otherwise.

Then I met ANOTHER Phantom. I CLOUDED him galore and kept running. He blinked a lot and advanced and when he did I hit him and drained him and poison auraed which would cause him to blink away. So I stung him and threw things. eventually he went down.

My last story is entitled "3 Orc Priests, 2 Orc Warrior, and a cockroach...in a narrow corridor".

Was hilarious. I was up top shooting clouds into an intersection and they kept blocking each other and falling over. Reappted sting and cloud spells. Then the best part I threw a net on top of the one in the center of the corridor. They couldn't do ANYTHING while confused. They all sat in the corridor and died....except for 2 priests. I ran out of spells.

And of course the game cheated at that point.
Instead of casting a balanced spell at me they called forth God power and took me to 5 HP in one call. Gee...okay when the game is losing it cheats....got it.
It's so nice that _I_ can do something like that when _I_ need...wait no I can't.

BTW I found shops FINALLY! but hadn't enough money.
Is there any way to sell things? I saw nothing saying I could

Anyway Septopus LXIII turns in my first real performance with 1825 points at 8th level

I will note that there was one misfit in the ancestry. Septopus the LIV broke ranks as he found it troubling that all the previous Venom Mages died a horrible death. So he went Summoner. It was a challenging run in itself. The first level I think was a little easier as the monsters would mostly kill everything and then only required one stab if that while the summoned creatures then go poof. Endless supply of them. Got the Imp too. 2nd level kinda changed that. Level 2 just seems to always have one big bunch of monsters in it that mages just get Malachi crunched in.

Congrats on making it to the Temple level CF! That's the first sign that you are really starting to understand the game, so well done. I can't believe you didn't go in and find a Nemelex altar.

You can destroy granite statues with a couple spells you aren't likely to have as a venom mage and a wand of disintegration will work as well. Be careful of non-granite statues though as they might animate and attack you.

That was a sweet crossbow artifact find for a venom mage. Too bad you didn't have bolts for it. And if you want to call forth god power yourself, play a Half-Orc Priest of Beogh-then you can Smite to your heart's content...and gain orc followers that would otherwise attack you and they can level themselves. Playing one now, pretty fun.

Jellies aren't affected by fear and other mind-related attacks, because they don't have one! Skybeasts are not fun-don't stand in water while attacking them, and don't eat any meat they leave behind unless you really want a mutation.

Only took me 63 tries

Oh yeah and I can't believe I forgot about the temple. I came upon it, but then went around the outskirts of it and fled. There was something I forget what that scared me away and wanted to circumvent it. THen there was a lot of going down and upstairs business and I really completely forgot about it. Didn't even see it again accidentally to remind myself

Granted the Nemelex guy is the only one I've ever gotten anything from. I've tried the fire evil god, the snail slow god, and a couple others. I guessed that the good gods won't like us.

well keep telling me things you think I might need.

Granted I still play level one basically never letting up on the keys.
I run down corridors and go "oh look I just killed something I think."
I'm so bored with it. If I die fine I just start again. This game is like gambling unfortunately. I can't stop.

I found that crossbow shortly before that last battle. I can't believe that battle went that way. I was SOOO dominating their asses. I wish the game was balanced and not give monsters that kind of instant death kinda stuff. I just hate all the wasted time.

Most gods don't care what you are if you want to worship them-its what you do after that they do care about. Have you actually tried one of the two magic gods yet? Vehemet and Sif Muna.

I think the first or second game I played I found Sif Muna and was that. Since then I have NOT found those 2 altars at ALL ANYWHERE!!!!!!

Always the other crazy ones. I find the fire one and the snail one a LOT. HAd a stint of finding Nemenex a lot in the 40s and 50s.

I just join whoever I find basically.
