Eh - they're saving that stuff for next season, I don't have a problem with that. And Dany in the show > Dany in the books, so I'm loving any Dany scenes we get. Plus it's giving you a really impressive sense of what a messianic figure she is becoming, which is important.

I sent a friend request to this in-game (Facebook version). Let's see if that comes through to you. But I still haven't figured out where you got that link from in the first place (i.e. so that Riddols could try to request me) edit to add: My game character is Fivefinger Deathpunch

So, it's been a few years since I've read the books... Where are we in the books now?

I was a little disappointed in the finale. It definitely sets up storylines for next year, but I was hoping for a big moment to hit and it never came. Maybe they would have been better off ending the season with the Red Wedding. I feel like the finale should have that big moment to cap off a season and get us talking.

Can someone explain to me Ramsay and how he got Theon? I don't know if I missed those characters completely, but who is he and should I know about him from before? And who was the guy talking with Walder Frey?
I swear the best thing HBO could do is invest in an app that you can use with the show that will give you background without spoiling future episodes. |

I have the same two questions, so I am glad I'm not the only one. I've even been watching the show with subtitles on to help make sure I get all the names and don't miss much. Hopefully someone can explain it further. |

The guy with Walther Frey is Roose Bolton. He was one of Rob's bannermen from the North. Ramsey is his illegitimate son (who is kind of a psycho). He got Theon by offering pardons to Theon's men. Ramsey was the one that burned Winterfell. |

I thought the episode was a bit of a let down. I think that was because I let some of you guys convince me that something was going to happen that didn't happen.
It did a good job of setting up next season though. I think it did that very well.

Heh... Good basic description of Roose Bolton, GD, but I think a little more is needed to be spelled out about him. Roose Bolton was not only Robb's bannerman, he was also the one who stuck the final knife in Robb during the Red Wedding episode. He is a very notable bad guy in and of himself, much less also being the father of psycho Ramsey.

I figured there was no topping last weeks episode, so I came into this one with pretty low expectations. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Couple WTF moments, especially with Egrit.

Was good seeing John Snow return to Castle Black.
Have we heard in the series yet about Maester Aemon? I can't remember...but I'm guessing not. Was thinking it would have been cool if that was dropped in last night. I liked the Dany scene as the end to the season, as I said above. Thought it really showed how her character is evolving into this sort of "larger than life" persona. The Small Council stuff was great, as was everything in King's Landing. Lena Hadley nailed it last night. Maybe I could have used some comment about Jaime's hand from her, but other than that (which was of course the writers not her), just awesome. From the scenes with Joffrey to the interaction with Tyrion - so great. The stuff that fell a bit more flat to me was the Stannis storyline. I love Davos more in the show than in the books to be honest, but it just felt...off to me. As some others have noted, they're making Stannis out to be much more of a puppet of Melisandre in the show than he is in the books (where it's Davos who presents the idea of going North to him, and Stannis who comes to the realization, rather than Melisandre), which is annoying. But Stannis is not one of my favorite characters, so I'm not heartbroken. |

Need some advice. My current system has been to watch the TV show and then read the books. So I've read books 1 & 2 and had been planning on waiting for Book 3 until the end of next season. The idea behind this is to maximize my enjoyment: I get the abrdigement first and then can have the broader world fleshed out in more detail after the fact.
My brother, who has read the series, had been supportive of this plan. However after last night he changed his mind and now thinks I'm missing out by doing this. He thinks (and I agree from what I've read) that the Red Wedding was even more shocking to people in the books than it was on TV. He also thinks that other details, like Theon being Reek, are better executed in the book and that there is an element of surprise that is lost by watching the TV show first. Would love to hear the collective wisdom on this from those of you who've read the books here. |

Definitely read then watch. Books 4 and 5 happen concurrently, so you would have to wait about 3 years before you read those two books.

Add me to that. I haven't seen the last ep yet, but apparently it is mentioned that Stannis is going north?! That was a mega surprise when you found out he was there - there was no previous acknowledgement he was leaving Dragonstone.
Things like that work better in the books - because you can leave characters for a while during the books, while in the TV show you have to at least give them a scene to remind viewers that they still exist (and to keep the actors in contract so they don't leave to do something else).

His attention was brought to the north, I don't think it was actually mentioned he was going there.

No. Here's the thing, like any great procrastinator, GRRM is excellent at getting everything else that isn't these books done.

They should change the seasons so that Winter officially starts when the first episode of Game of Thrones airs.

I mean, they're previews of a preview, but these teasers still got me excited - Vine
4 awesome 2-second clips (I think the 2nd might give DT a heart attack!) and one of Dany doing nothing!
