Would have been better to yell at the guy and check on his kid before launching a punch. If the kid appeared to really hurt (for instance started crying right at the kick) I probably would have launched into a more aggressive mode too. Not sure if I would knock him out though.

As for the other guy, even if your mentally impaired you need to know physical control, otherwise you are too dangerous to be allowed outside of the house or a mental institution. So there is no excuse for kicking a kid. If there is anyone at fault, it is the mother... if the kid was being a brat and it was annoying her child, she should have cooled the situation or told the father to take care of his kid.

If the little kid did nothing, then she needs to take better care of her kid and teach him not to do something stupid like that.

Are you serious? Yell at him first? I don't have kids but I'll be damned if someone puts their hands or feet on my child and they are a grown person.

I'm not making any excuse for what the adult with Down syndrome did. He is responsible for his actions, despite whatever his handicap might be.

I just think it's unfortunate that the father took it to the level he did.

I don't blame the father for his reaction, I do not think I would react quite the same way.

It is very easy to escalate things and pretty much impossible to take things back once you do them... So I would see if there was a clear threat, the guy was away from my kid, unarmed, and I could clearly crush him at any moment before he could move an inch... in that case I would give him a fractional moment to calm his ass down. If I were to attack, it would purely be for vengeance... and I find that distasteful personally.

I would teach my kid to be strong and smart rather than just strong if I had the choice and ability.

Besides, having 'won' my share of fights before I was so smart, I know that generally it ends up worst off afterwards, usually in ways you can't guess. Like your opponent turning out to be retarded, or a cop seeing just one side of the fight, or really hurting the other guy more than you intended... all of that is just hassle and shame, something I don't want to bother with for mere vengeance.

If the situation can be controlled with words and calm actions, it should be. If you really can't tell whether it can be controlled, then err on the side of smashing heads.

EDIT: My personal level of action would probably be along the lines of "WTF are you doing." while getting between him and my kid, then demanding an apology to my kid. In this situation in hindsight you would expect the mom to jump in explaining her kid is messed up, and that he didn't mean it, in which case I'd feel glad I didn't knock out a retarded kid. If the kid really meant to mess with my kid, and was not retarded, he is either going to get really apologetic or he is going to run his ass out of there and really look like a piece of crap.

Another key factor is that I'm checking on my kid's state first, more worried about him than what happens to the other guy. If my kid is really hurt and an explanation doesn't come instantly, I'd probably be doing the exact same thing in the video. The only difference you would see is me stopping to check on my kid for two seconds first, which might be enough time to cool things down in this case.

It looked like a glancing kick. The kid hardly reacts. I would say that a full punch to the face to a guy with Down's Syndrome is a bit of an overeaction...

I'm sure the dad that punched the other guy had time to see he had down syndrome. He probably saw his kid get kicked and reacted.

Yep.

All of these perfect humans can slow time down, consult FOFC, meditate, take a deep breath, and then react calmly, all within less than a second.

I'm pretty much the most pacifistic person there is when I have more than a fraction of a second to process things, but in that case, I can see myself doing the same thing. Of course, if I had raised my kid poorly and expected him to do something like that, but still reacted the same way, I'd just be a douche with great reflexes.

Ok, I have to say one more thing - If I had photoshop skills, I would do some type of Kelsey Grammer morph, because her giant melon is shaped like Frasier.
