I love that in the business of college athletics, its apparently appropriate to be involved in hiring negotiations and then run off to the internet to tell everyone what happened. Whoever does that is unethical to begin with, and should immediately be viewed with suspicion (which is why most "inside info" on the internet about college sports is garbage.)

We can finally confirm that MBBF is actually Mike Anderson.

No, the connected posters are acting like a deal is all but official. They are not pretending nothing ever happened.

Dudley Dawson tweets all hell is about to break loose. The well-connected poster replies with more like 40 minute of hell is about to break loose.

No one is pretending this never happened. If it doesn't happen at this point, look for a lot of egg coinciding with a lot of face over there.

They certainly aren't backing off from it right now.

I guess you realized the Gabe DeArmond tweet was him quoting the Arkansas guy saying he would eat crow?

Yeah, I did. Luke said last night Anderson was staying, so I could've just left it, but it would be more stuff from the Arkansas side of things, so there wasn't much point.

I think the usual response if they're wrong is, "the deal WAS done, so I was right, but then something changed at the last second."

WTF has Mike Anderson done to have 2 schools throw absurd amounts of money at him?

I know he made a semi-surprising Elite 8 run, but in my opinion, the full court press is not really a viable strategy in college basketball anymore, other than throwing it out there for short periods of time during a game. Any competant team will break it and score easy baskets off of it as they get used to playing it. Also, most top teams are so well conditioned, it is not going to tired the opponent out. Further more, by going 10+ deep into your own bench, you are not maximizing the playing time for your top players.

I'm going to get sample-size thrown at me here, but..

VCU has done it successfully for 4-5 years now. They've even shown that it tires out top teams in the last week.

Now, is it different at the high-major level night in and night out? Maybe. But it's certainly worked for them in the CAA and OOC.

But is that what makes VCU successful these 4-5 years? Could they have been just as successful practicing and playing a tough m2m, or 1-3-1, etc.? I guess my general point is: The type of defense you play doesn't matter, it is how hard you play that defense and how talented your players are. I just feel the tiredness thing is way overrated with the age of the players, all the TV/regular timeouts and the length of the college game, all combined with the opportunities for giving up too many buckets (and fouls) against a team who can break the press.

However, one thing I love about the college game is all the different styles on offense and defense thatyou get to watch, this included.

Anecdotaly, I have seen plenty of teams "wear down" against them - including Georgetown and Purdue.

You may be right. Maybe they are just as successful in another scheme, but it sure seems to me like they benefit from the style. Especially because they feed off of it emotionally I thinkl

It's a nice regular season offense, but it's limited in the tourney because of the higher intensity teams play at and TV timeouts. It's a little bit like the D'Antoni offense in the NBA. You can creep up on a team in midseason with it, but it's not likely to do much in the postseason with prepared teams (esp with the TV breaks).

VCU is just a better team than people gave them credit for and they played extremely hard the first two games. I don't think their system is the secret or they'd be making runs like this each year.

Good point on the TV timeouts. Playing in the CAA they only have a handful of games televised during the regular season, meaning that the game moves much faster - increasing the impact of the full-court pressure all game.

Sources tell 5NEWS that Mike Anderson will likely be named the new head basketball coach at the University of Arkansas.

The question is, when?

Sources say there has been no direct contact between Anderson and anyone representing the University of Arkansas.

Those sources believe that Arkansas is prepared to offer Anderson the job but must first get permission from the University of Missouri to speak with Anderson.

Sources say that as of 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday no contact between the University of Arkansas and Missouri Athletic Director Mike Alden had been made.

No change. I expect lots of this until the contract is signed. MA's agent is making lots of enemies with his indirect leaks, but he's going to get his client paid in the end. Good for him I suppose.

A mosquito in Fayetteville is my source, and I think it just told me that Mike Anderson has turned down an official offer from the University of Arkansas to play Miss Hannigan in a low-budget touring production of "Annie" next year.

Then again, I don't speak mosquito.

Comments from MA's agent. Nothing surprising here, though he's playing the game a lot more than he's letting on here.

Anderson's agent says Missouri working on contract extension for coveted coach :: The Republic

He's at least smart enough to keep things civil when making public statements fully knowing that Anderson's going to end up at Mizzou in the end.

The tennis match continues.

As of late Tuesday night, a source extremely close to Mike Anderson said the former Razorback assistant is poised to return to Fayetteville. The source believes Anderson will accept an offer to become the Hogs new head basketball coach.

However, the source tells KNWA nothing has been finalized and there's still a small chance Anderson could change his mind.

KNWA has learned that Arkansas is still in the process of negotiating a deal with Anderson's agent. But money may not be the motivating factor, with the source explaining that "this is not a bidding war" between Arkansas and Missouri.

The source, who wants to remain anonymous, said Anderson didn't give the Arkansas job much thought when it became available because of concerns about the old regime he dealt with during his 17 years at the school. But as the process continued, Mike began to realize that many of the old boosters and administrators won't have anything to do with his daily dealings at Bud Walton Arena.

Anderson was in Tulsa, Oklahoma Tuesday night attending a wake for his longtime friend Jim Pharr. Pharr, a supporter of Arkansas, Missouri and Tulsa basketball, suddenly passed away on Saturday. His funeral service is scheduled for ten o'clock Wednesday morning.

Anderson is expected to the funeral, which means an official announcment or news conference from the University of Arkansas may not happen until Wednesday afternoon or possibly Thursday.

According to a recent report from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the University of Missouri has drawn-up a revised contract for Anderson that includes a 500-thousand dollar raise and a two-year extension.

The new contract would have to be approved by Missouri's Board of Curators, who met Thursday in the City of Rolla. When asked if the board discussed a new deal for Anderson, members wouldn't comment about the specifics of their meeting.

As for possible financial figures, it's been reported that Anderson has a buyout clause in his Missouri contract for approximately 550-thousand dollars. That means Arkansas would have to pay that amount on top of the salary he could be offered for his services as the school's head basketball coach.

If Anderson follows through and becomes Arkansas' next head coach, he would be returning to a place where he spent 17 years of his career. Working alongside Nolan Richardson, Anderson helped the Razorback basketball team win a national championship in 1994. The Hogs made it to the NCAA championship game the following year but lost to UCLA.

Following Richardson's dismissal and racial discrimination lawsuit against the university, Anderson had success as the University of Alabama-Birmingham before turning around the basketball program at Missouri.

Best case scenario for this thread is Anderson to Arkansas for less than twenty-four hours before returning to Missouri where he promptly gets busted for recruiting violations and fired.

[crosses fingers]

On the UT front - you hearing anything Jon? Several talking heads are throwing out Shaka Smart's (VCU) name, but that feels more like who THEY think should be a candidate, rather than who UT is actually considering.

A lot of people think because of that sort of slant in the writing and his known connections, the source is Nolan. Some actually know who the source is and call him "as rock solid as it gets."

Although Smart wouldn't surprise me (another mistake in the making IMO), the names I've seen/heard mentioned are virtually identical to what's being thrown out there for the GT job. It's as though there's a basic list & most everyone on it gets attached to every vacancy ... which probably isn't far from the truth.

More interesting perhaps is seeing Allan Houston's name mentioned a couple of times for the eventual/possible AD vacancy.

Yeah, I've got the same thought - there's just a list that the talking heads have.

Smart wasn't on it two weeks ago, he is now.

Peterson or Williams?

Buzz Williams is the one showing up on lists, Peterson just got hired at UNCW last year and as far as I know isn't a commodity at all.

Edit: Williams is the Marquette coach.

Feldman just tweeted that Anderson is expected to accept Arkansas' offer. I'm not sure if that's supposed to be more definitive than what's already out there, and thus "news," or if he's just putting that out there as a "me too" news item.

Then, yeah...

Williams, Smart, Stevens.... I don't know the whole list, but those guys are on it.

Chris Mooney at Richmond, Mark Turgeon at Tx A&M, Gregg Marshall at Wichita State are part of the usual suspects list.

A couple of names I've seen thrown out for UT only include Lawrence Frank (now Celtics ass't, ex-Nets HC, ex-Vol ass't under O'Neill) and Brad Brownell, currently at Clemson.

Brownell was a damned good coach at UNCW - he'd be an interesting fit at UT though because he coaches a pretty "boring" (but effective) style.

At least he did at UNCW.

I didn't see this gem of a thread until now. I really have no dog in the fight, but unless I REALLY like being the coach of Missouri, I'm freakin going to Arkansas in a second. I'm not sure what this guys done to earn the fight back and forth, but he's a very lucky guy. He'll get a nice raise to stay at Mizzou or go to his old home and coach in the SEC.

One thing I will say: If there was ever a time he was 100% sure of staying at Mizzou, he'd have said it and the rumors would have halted. All he had to do at any point was call up a local paper, commit to Mizzou and pull his name from consideration from the Arkansas job.

He hasn't and I think that says he hasn't made up his mind (or he has and he's waiting for a better contract offer)
