It's an interesting question, because at its most basic level, the jury is simply being asked to judge whether the state has proven the elements of the crime beyond a reasonable doubt. By giving them information about the sentence, you're essentially inviting them to ignore the elements of the crime if they don't like the outcome (notwithstanding that they might agree the standard of proof has been met).

I admit I know next to nothing about criminal law, so I'm not sure to what extent sentencing information is uniformly kept away from the jury.

Isn't that what jury nullification is all about? Juries acquit because they don't believe the offender deserves what the punishment would be...or because they don't believe the illegal activity should really be illegal?

Empire High School English teacher and cheerleading coach has been arrested; police say she had sexual contact with her student. Christie Elliot, 25, is charged with once count each of luring a minor for sexual exploitation and sexual conduct with a minor.

Tucson police detective say a parent found inappropriate messages on his child's cell phone. The parent reported the messages to the school because he believed the messages were from the child's English teacher.

The Tucson Police Department Child Sexual Assault Detectives are investigating. Once police were able to look at the text messages detectives learned that the child had an inappropriate physical relationship with his English teacher.

Elliot turned herself in at the Tucson Police. She has been booked into the Pima County Jail.

Gwinnett teacher quits after affair with student *| ajc.com

Not hot, but probably going to be a fairly high profile affair (pun intended) for a little while around Atlanta since she was just voted this school's teacher of the year. And no, as I understand it, that was not something voted on by the students

EXCLUSIVE: Sex Crime Teacher Debra Lafave Set To Wed | Radar Online

Notorious sex crime teacher Debra Lafave is engaged to be married, RadarOnline.com can exclusively report.

The stunning 32-year-old blonde – who grabbed headlines around the world after pleading guilty to two felonies in connection with her sexual relationship with a 14-year-old student in 2004 – is getting married to Florida restaurant owner Shawn Haverfield, 34.

“We are happy for them – Debbie is a great girl,” a source close to the couple told RadarOnline.com exclusively.

Debra, who was formerly married to Kristian Owen Lafave, caused a storm of controversy when, as a 23-year-old teacher at Angelo L. Greco Middle School in Florida, she had sexual intercourse and oral sex with the student on four different occasions. The encounters took place inside her classroom, car and house.

Police caught her after being tipped off by the teenager’s mom. They then tape recorded conversations between the two and apprehended Lafave at their next meeting.

In a plea bargain that outraged many because it did not include prison time, Lafave was convicted of two felony counts of lewd and lascivious battery on a child.

The boy’s mother agreed to the plea deal in order to avoid her young son having to testify in open court.

Lafave was sentenced to three years of Community Control (house arrest) and seven years of probation.

On December 8, 2005, a second judge failed to accept the plea agreement because of the lack of prison time and set a trial date for April 10, 2006, but the prosecutor in that case later dropped the charges.

The story took a bizarre twist after John Gillespie, the lead detective, was arrested before the trial in an unrelated prostitution sting, while Tampa Bay Police officers were probed when it was revealed they took graphic nude photos of Lafave while she was in stirrups in a jail cell.

Lafave went on national television to explain her actions, attributing her indiscretions to bipolar disorder, hypersexuality and poor judgment during manic episodes.

Her first husband also appeared on numerous talk shows regarding how his then-wife's crime had affected their relationship.

I love this line. It's a department store parking lot, early evening on a weekday. Call the cops, there are cars in the parking lot!

They told police they had sex, and the police took it from there, "determining" that the sex must have occurred prior to their arrival, not while they were there or after they were told sex had already occurred. Them's smart.

That's what I thought was so funny about the article. Clearly they saw something suspicious, but whatever it was they didn't put it in the article.

Sadly when I was first scanning this page one part of that post jumped out at me.... the very beginning...

Scrolling down and the only part the I noticed from that was "That's my wife...".

Needless to say I scrolled back quickly to read that post. The post had a much different meaning after actually reading it.

Naked & with Vodka bottles in the car... a nice combo!

Quote:
When a patrol officer found a high school teacher in a parked car with a 16-year-old student, both were naked and there were bottles of Sprite and vodka in the car, according to the arrest affidavit.

Mountain View High School instructor Courtney Bowles, 31, bought the booze, picked up the unnamed boy and parked her blue Subaru in North Lake Park around 10:40 p.m. Friday, the reports shows.

The alleged victim first said he had no identification with him and gave Loveland Police Officer Sharon Hopkins a false birth date. When she questioned him again, he handed over his Mountain View school ID, showing he was a 10th grader. He then acknowledged that he was only 16.

Bowles, who's married with two children and is an instructional coach for teachers at the school, told the officer that she offered the boy alcohol, but he only had one sip.

Bowles, arrested for sexual assault by a person in a position of trust and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, was released on a personal recognizance bond Monday.

The 8th Judicial District Attorney's Office is expected to file charges by Thursday.

Though Bowles is out of custody, a judge has ordered her to stay away from anyone younger than 18, to remain 100 feet from the high school, and to refrain from contacting the boy or his family.

"In the initial investigation that led up to the filing of the charges, there was only one victim that was indicated," said Sgt. Benjamin Hurr, spokesman for the department.

Her work at Mountain View included instructing teachers on how best to interact with students, though she also tutored kids struggling in their studies.

In the wake of Bowles' arrest, Principal Kevin Aten sent out a notice encouraging parents to speak with their children about the incident and report any other suspected abuse to school officials.

"We are fully cooperating with the Loveland Police Department's ongoing investigation," the notice said. "We are also concerned that there may be other victims."

Here's a twist on the story. This time the teacher was one who advised other teachers on how not to sleep with their students.
