Busy (in the negative) 8-9 stage for the Ravens, though:
-let WR Webster walk in free agency - I put in an offer, but allowed AVAILABLE to take him... big cohesion loss but he was <4 ypt last season, terrible production at this late stage in his career -got flat out beat in free agency for a mediocre DL, whom I liked for chemistry purposes... doesn't happen all that often but we just got outfoxed there -I also lost out on a DE whom I thought could lose weight and convert to ILB, kinda wanted him as a novelty/chem addition to a weak spot on the roster So... infrequent stage with multiple disappointments, I usually land a pretty high share of "guys I want" and here missed on two that I expected to land. |

Late free agency done in one big swoop, Baltimore had a lot of roster slots, and we...err...filled em up.
TE Palmer was a holdout re-sign (dummy me). DT Weber is actually kinda important, a guy we expect go log real playing time and get out there on special teams. Lots of long snappers just in case, as our incumbent guy is moving to "play TE" and become our WR/TE leader for life. RB Samuelson may have a real role as an undrafted rookie, I like the cut of his jib and maybe also his 72 breakaway speed rating. TE Derek Turnbull is the classic "only a few ratings, but they are the right ones" and could become a long term TE3. LB Juan Panetta is a coverage first guy who might have a legit shot, even though our top two draft picks were basically for the same role. (That 2nd rounder is not only a miss, but also now looks not much better than this after-draft dude) So it goes. |

WFT also hit late free agency hard:
Coupled with an ample draft of "people" as well:
...and yes the 30 on the left is indeed that we ranked 30 out of 32 teams. That's why we stink. (checks notes) Well, anyway... Among the young'ns, noteworthy: RB Killian looks useful G/C Tate very disappointing, bad scouting there FS Peterson should make the team and contribute Not exactly stirring. 30th sounds about right I guess. |

So, it's after 9pm, I'm shot, I just cut down to 60 and that's it. No capacity to tinker, work out chem, nothing.
Incidentally, I have a near three way dead heat in my race to start at QB in Washington. Two guys each have one winning but meh season under their belts, and new guy off the scrapheap seems roughly as talented. I think Bronson might have the edge. Last edited by QuikSand : 02-23-2021 at 09:20 PM. |

Regular season file sent for Ravens. Bad news is this does not look like a power team roster to me, not a bye week feel here. Good news, I felt exactly the same way the last two years, and we defied low expectations both times. Maybe we have it in us again - I'm expecting big offensive seasons again from our principals on offense, and I guess Marty will keep his YOLO style leading to interceptions leading to the need for more slingin' it. I'm in.

Washington - some bad luck. Our second round pick got hit by the volatility stick, he's a cut (Ravens cut our 2nd rounder too, just a bad pick trending the wrong way, no real excuse there)
I settle on Bronson to stat at QB, but it was not easy. May regret it. Kinda fun drawing names out of a hat like that. Nobody is genuinely good. Similar to the Ravens situation, I don't sense a power team here, but we got the Baskin Robbins trophy last year without being great, maybe we can strong together some more wins. 10-6 |

Okay so regular season in the bag, and my hunches were pretty good:
(formatting fuckup above, as usual, sorry) Full regular season results: http://gml.fof-belco.com/forum/showt...ll=1#post64455 Ravens 12-4, #3 seed: GML: Baltimore Ravens 2136 WFT 8-8, #7 seed and out: GML: Washington Football Team 2136 Ravens did indeed slide a bit, and with the #3 seed have to fight it out the hard way. WFT slid a lot, and are out of the payoffs amidst a trainwreck NFC East (familiar, right?) mashup. And it looks like Juggernaut might be closer than I am, right now, to being the first guy to get both of his teams into the Bowl at the same time. Two near misses for us, but maybe the WFT is fading away from its window of opportunity. |

So, the WFT is in a precarious spot right here. Roster is kinda meh... RB group is basically barren (ready for a reboot) and chem along the OL is tenuous. DB is settling in a bit, I hope. But the team isn't "good." So, what now?
To Do List: -rebuild RB/FB group both chem and talent -sort out chem leadership and add talent along D7 -decide on a direction at QB, hopefully -fill in DB group Last edited by QuikSand : 02-28-2021 at 08:21 AM. |

If I had the time/inclination, I think this situation with the WFT is really interesting, as a which-path-to-take scenario.
Team is only one year removed from a SuperBowl run. However, there are signs that we're in real trouble of not getting back there. Major flux at the QB position, and some of the smoke and mirrors that apparently was making things look good for a couple years came unraveled. And... we are on the clock (whoa) and I don't know what to do. The in-game #1 overall player is there for my pick at 1.17, he's a DL who looks good but he's a DL. There's a good not great looking RB. There's a mysterious QB who would fit my likely new triad. Oh the humanity. |

Went with my perceived BPA, and resisted the lure of the "impact position" guys with less clear outlook. This guy looks like a sure thing to be very effective at DT/DE, for whatever that is worth. With pick 1.3 maybe not, but with pick 1.17, at this point I feel like I'll take advantage of the popular effort to pursue flashy positions, and just go after some fundamentals, which this roster needs. I hope he is a build-around player for us for a long time.
Washington: KickStand takes DT Wally Quinn with the 1.17 pick.

So, perhaps I spoke to soon about the WFT RB/FB situation. In the light of a chilly Monday morning, I actually see two things that suggest... perhaps not. -RB Pat Shipway has no actual football skills, but is a lovely 8-9, 89/94 chem gimp -RB Frank Killian is a 2nd year guy who looks good enough to play as RB2 ...and in theory we could squeeze another season at RB1 out of Xavier Bush, who is fading but did indeed give us nearly 5ypc last season, and he's chem-friendly with Shipway as leader. So... maybe hold the phone on the hurry to reboot.

Anyway... draft has wrapped, early free agency wraps tomorrow. We'll have a clearer picture then. Nothing really alarming, for either team.
Rumors of a big RB/FB shakeup at Washington were overblown. We grabbed a rookie, maybe two, but only to fit in around the pieces that we have in place already. And likely sticking with the incumbent at QB, too. So, probably, just more of the mediocre same ahead. |

So... with the way I draft using tunnel vision, I tend to get low ratings for my overall talent acquired. The BenBot ratings are often unkind. I'm used to it, and the fact that many of my teams remain competitive (and sometimes even better than that) despite this buoys my faith. Regardless... both teams drafted a full class today, and I'll brace for the harsh assessment in today's stage.
...braces...
So yeah, that's 27th of 32 even with an extra 2nd rounder. I mean... yeah, that's often how it goes. I really liked the look of the OT we took in round 1... BenBot, not so much. Drat. We'll see if we end up with a few gems amidst this pile of rubble. Sometimes we do. And...
Cool. Not bad. Multiple guys not even getting honorable mention here, but the Bot likes my BPA top pick, and... well, that's enough. Mid-pack is better than we're used to. |

Okay, some actual content for this thread. I am genuinely excited about two young ILBs we have brought aboard for the Ravens in recent stages... let's have a look.
Shaun Farr was a one-year guy in Tennessee, but presumably wanted too much money for their tastes. Okay. He got three offers in late free agency, but we had cap space and blew their doors off with a one year offer. What I see here is a potential long term WILB guy, who can stop the run and be a non-liability in coverage. High endurance is a plus. Punishing hitter is, well whatever it is, it's high. 95 personality in the right triad is a major plus. Floyd Warkentein was our 5th rounder this year, and I already sense good things, as does the BenBot auto-insulter. That combination of endurance and (potential) zone coverage up into the high 80s is really encouraging. Not the same battery of complementary stuff like Farr, but I see a potential long term role for him as well - maybe as SILB in 3WR and other pass situations. And, while not a new face in the same way, I'll mention another guy I like: Silas Somogyi is a nice complementary fit for us, a max special teamer and affinity fit. He's a low endurance guy we can plug in pretty much anywhere, but ideally he will get work as a gunner, and then fill in for maybe 25 tackles as a 5th/6th LB type. I like it. I have fallen out of the habit of this sort of write-up... but this is, for me, the quiet joy of this game. Love having these guys coming together and letting me feel like they will stay around, and over time become major cohesion assets along with reasonably useful (but not too expensive) talents. Ok, preseason in the books... today's file is the "whole one-shot regular season" stage, so need to get this right.
BAL - Marty Stancil is rated 22/22 overall, but has a 42-10 record and yes wins are a QB stat. Too many picks but he pushes the ball up the field... YOLO. (That big timing bar...didn't tzach say something about that, too?) Anyway, we play to our strengths... new RB but whatevs, we've got a WR1/ET1 combo that's solid and I expect our offense to again be well above average. 1st rounder looks like a minor miss, and 3rd rounder is a cut - that's not great. We have hobos off the street stepping into roles where they will get targets, also not great. Chem is fine, cohesion is good, defense is unknown. I think this looks like a 9-win team, and the last few years that's been good enough to churn out 11 wins... I'll figure we pull it off again, and go 11-5. |

In WAS, tougher read on the situation. QB Rod Swift was a late-season cut to avoid his anger, now he's back on a cheap 2yr deal and i think starts this year, whatevs. Xavier Bush is a shell of a RB, we'll try to squeeze one more part time season out of his carcass. We lop off the top of the TE depth chart as he's dying too, another preseason pruning.
OL is a bit of a mess, both talent and chem and even plan-wise. Defensive front chem is in disarray for want of the right leader, secondary is probably one quality guy short of where I'd want it. I think this is roughly a .500 club... I'll guess we squeeze 9-7 from the group, but wouldn't be shocked by either 5-11 or 11-5. |

So, regular season in the books. I predicted 20 wins between the two teams, let's see how things played out. Spoiler: weird AF
9-7 Ravens Miss Postseason Okay, maybe the fickle finger of fuckery caught up with us... and our always-gamble QB ran out of luck. -11 in turnover margin is awful, the running game was awful, and maybe the chem fall-apart was a factor, too. So, we'll sit this one out, after a pretty nice run in recent seasons. Dammit. WFT Cruises To #1 Seed This makes sense, how exactly? Swift was stable at QB, running game was really solid (Bush still has it), and things just generally worked well. How about that. |

Yeah, pretty nuts. I guess he was the right guy at QB after all, and he will now hold out in search of a fat deal, I'd guess. Or something like that. Anyway, an unexpected ace when I thought I was holding a seven.

Ravens situation is compounded by my blunder... the young LB Shaun Farr I posted as liking a lot, Rex didn't put him into the lineup, and I failed to correct that - so he ended up sidelined all year and is now "Angry," so won't re-sign with us. For a crap season anyway, that's just another big L. Dammit.

Ravens on the clock at pick 1.20... a pretty obvious play is a good but not great OT, but there's a non-affinity WR there too. Tiny guy, my scout sees pretty good but not great bars, but he is a receiver. Kind of a tough call.
The vanilla play here is to fill the need... we have been decimated at OL (modern usage, not archaic usage) so landing a LT we could start this year at G and let drift outward in time makes a ton of sense, even if it's unexciting. It also lets me push back my worries about the direction at DB and maybe elsewhere a while. Lineman it is. ...my scout sees maxed-out run blocking and blocking strength, let's see what the BenBot ratings look like: Baltimore: QuikSand takes T Donald Burton with the 1.20 pick.
Great sign, he matches up. So, not sure where his long term position is, but he looks like a long term OL asset. Fine. |

Hmmm... we did a whole "thing" years ago around building for a specific year. It's 2138 now... maybe, uhh, 2142? Could be a thing. We'd need, you know, a quarterback and stuff. But...hmmmm.
(Spoiler: the Rush 2112 thing did not work out, I napped at the absolutely wrong time, the AI submitted a terrible roster for the year I had focused on, and it all fell to shit... but it was kinda fun building that way for a while) |

Okay, on to the WFT, right now the more interesting project here.
Front Office Football Eight Washington Football Team Roster, Scout Overview Code:
Well, Swift was solid again, the team won behind him, so... he's our guy? Maybe? I guess? Code:
Nothing special here, but I usually don't really demand anything special at RB. Watson posted 5.35 ypc last season, so he gets at least RB2 duties, but I'd be open to investing at this position if there's a good plan. Code:
Again, nothing really special. Fasani/Lehmann are both solid TE2 types... again, open to investing here. Otherwise, this is a good-blocking unit that likely eats up 150-60 targets for under 1,000 yards. Code:
Okay, what worked here? Hines close to 8 ypt, Botte under 7. Wait, this team actually won games? Like, many of them? Code:
Okay, I had not been thinking of this team being in "hold it together and run it back" mode here, so I exposed Champagne (and Finneran) to free agency. Now what? Tate wants phat lewt. Perkins is good enough to start at G. Whitfield is a mess - bad chem (90/43) has him perched as our chem leader, and he's pissed about sitting last year. So, cut? T Davidson is going to get his fat extension, well deserved, he's the build-around guy here. Code:
Okay, whatevs. We have cap space, so... who knows. Code:
Quinn looks like a really nice player, good 10.5 sack rookie campaign, great. Good to see BPA pay off. Hatch doesn't have great endurance, but is a nice role playing pass rusher. DT Compton is the central run stopper, expensive but useful there. DT Baker another pass rusher, and DT Sherman an uber-cohesion guy. So, we have enough here to play out this season... additions are either for long term benefit, or just gravy. Code:
Figurelle is the build-around guy here, and Harding comes out of the undrafted patch and becomes our stuff-the-middle WILB (and maybe future chem anchor). Love that. So, if we re-sign Brew (cohesion +++) we are probably good enough for now, but could withstand a talent infusion. Code:
Okay, this group came together nicely, and quickly. Bradley is the obvious go-to shut-down guy, that's great to have. Have to keep in mind he will need big money soon. Rex and Houston are great short term utility pieces, but we need productive young guys now. S Ottesen is a maybe, Donhoff fringe but great chem/ST so he'll stick, and I think Horst will develop into a CB2 type. So, an early pick or a fat contract might make sense here. Would love to get an impact nickel/ballhawk who fits the scheme. Code:
So, a lot of cap space to use. I'm thinking the roster priorities short term look like: WR DB RB QB LB TE DB ...and if there's a no brainer guy at pick 1.31 for any of the above, I'll be very pleased. |

So, in the opening round of free agency, WFT was busy:
Let's keep an eye on the bonuses for context here... but I remain surprised how much command I can still get when I have cap space. However, the big news is right here: I honestly tried to sign this guy... ...made the rank amateur mistake of going for the long term deal, rather than the obvious short term. He had a higher possible bonus number so I don't even know that I would have won out, but... dammit. |

So, want to hear a funny one? I remained pretty much resigned to the ravens team being in the toilet for a while, because reasons. Last season just fell apart, no two ways about it. So the team must be in massive decline, right?
So, I'm just perusing the lineup now... for FA Stage 1:3, mind you, and... REX STARTED THE WRONG FUCKING QUARTERBACK. (and I didn't notice it) So there's that. Last edited by QuikSand : 03-15-2021 at 09:57 PM. |

Well, anyway... free agency will wrap up tomorrow morning, and we'll get a first peek at the rookie draftees. I'm not that optimistic, as usual. Filling needs, but I wasn't as hands-on as I ought to have been. Will post the BenBot wrap up that ranks our (full) drafts #26 and #31 or something like that... and that'll be fine.

Anyway, it's all good. I'm used to that. We compete despite it. Or perhaps because of it.
Looking at the Ravens, I see some rookie contributors: both top OL look good not great, LB Corbett is a weird-bars guy I like a bit, and WR Mason is one of those all-but-RR empty suits. We can work with it. The rookie class brings Washington some guys worth a look, CB Shelton looks like a CB1 or possibly a SS (wha?) and LB Cranwell will patrol the inside nicely, I think. WR Mogolov has two standout bars... courage and kick returning. Maybe worthwhile? With the WFT, Rod Swift is predictably holding out, and I just didn't plan for this properly. Can fix, it will just cost me the DE we signed risk-free early in the FA process, and whom I now wish I had been more honest with. |

So, turns out WFT as the #2 seed, and we basically held our seed... lost a close game on the road in the conference championship game to eventual champions SF.
Juggernaut has a good thing going there, and also in the IHOF... he's a serious manager in the current iteration of the FOF universe. Hats off to him, once again. |

Front Office Football Eight
Baltimore Ravens Roster, Scout Overview Code:
Okay, at this point, we understand who Stancil is. 18 out of 100 is unfair, but he's just too YOLO unless you've got a ton of firepower, and we really don't. I think this year's starter at QB is not on this roster now. Code:
Campbell looks like he shoudl be pretty decent - in two seasons, he has been awful. Murray, he oz the Hole Rec void, was the only decent performer here. Could we just start over? Perhaps, to suit a new QB. Code:
Nothing at all special here. Code:
Palmer has been my "good enough to be a TE1 guy" for a while, despite never really putting up numbers north of 7 ypt. Again, all disposable here. Code:
I extended Douglas because we needed someone around, but am not thrilled there either. Wow, we have either overlooked or just whiffed at offense of late, haven't we? Code:
Yeah, lots of early picks here. Line is fine, just wish they were blocking for a better group of players. Code:
okay Code:
Wow, nobody really special here, either. Dotson the best overall player, but he's in his 8th year. Not awful, but... not innspiring. Code:
Ok, Wehmeyer is the solid chem leader, and we can use him for a while as a rotation player and special teamer. Burge and Sitz are both 1st rounders, and nonplussed by his elevation to the top job there. Without them, what do we have to work with? Warkentien is good enough to play as a rotation guy in a 6-way LB blur, mostl in coverage. Somogyi is a special teams ace and decent at everything as a backup. Craig has two big bars, but they're good ones - RunD and Zone, so he can be SILB. We have options here, including re-signing/extending the quality guys without affinities, but I'm flexible. Code:
Okay. CB Jaymes has been our chem leader, but with only 73 personality. I don't love that. And in 11th season, time to move on, I think. This group needs repair, maybe a rebuild. I signed CB McCabe last year on a risk-free deal, and he's good enough to consider extending now as a build-around guy. Seriously, nobody else in this gposition group is worth much... so this could easily be a "sign a chem leader and two veterans, and draft three more guys" situation here. Code:
okay Code:
We have a lot of cap space. From the ho-hum above... we are going to need it. |

That was, very easily, the least inspiring roster rundown I have typed up in any career thread here, ever.
