Dusty Baker's thought process right now:

"I wish I had Steven Strasburg.. just think of what I could do to the kid.. no.. FOR THE KID.. FOR.. not to, I mean, he's young.. he can throw what.. 125 pitches a game?"

I'm not putting the kid in the hall of fame yet, but the that Milladge at bat just wasn't right.

Pitch one - 99 MPH fastball that crosses the inside corner. If he'd swung at that, his bat would have been sheared in half.

Pitch two - knee bending curve ball at 83 MPH. Strike.

Pitch three - same curve ball, six inches lower. Swung at and missed by about 2 feet.

I'm sorry, that's just not fair. All three of those pitches were unhittable.

It's only 3 innings but as a Detroit fan, he's pitching how I wish Verlander pitched every time he took the mound.

EDIT: of course there is always the second time through the lineup

Definitely. He'll give up some homeruns in his career with this type of heat.

If he can get that changeup dropped a few mph's then wow.

After first seeing his stuff as an Aztec, my thoughts were the only thing that could hold him back are injuries. There are some reasons to be concerned that his arm won't hold up, but for as long as it does I expect him to be an excellent pitcher.

not a bad ML Debut eh? 7 IP, 4 hits , 2 runs, and 14 ks. lol unbelievable.

But the best thing about his debut, was how he responded from that 2 run homer.

From Joe Poz's live blog:

Quote:
OK, so I was curious: How many 21-year-old pitchers had ever struck out 14 in a game without walking anyone? Of course, no one has ever done it in their first game in the big leagues. Heck, Strasburg was only one strikeout away from the first game record of 15 strikeouts. But how many young pitchers have ever even struck out more than 10 in a game without walking anyone?

Well, first I will tell you that since 1920 only five pitchers 21 or younger have struck out 14 in a game without walking. Dwight Gooden actually did it twice. The other four are Kerry Wood (with his famous 20 strikeout, no walk game), Frank Tanana, Gary Nolan and Vida Blue. Those are five very good pitchers, but you will note that all five of them ran into trouble in their career. Gooden’s trouble is well-documented as is Blue’s. Tanana, Nolan and Wood all had significant arm trouble.

But the more interesting one to me is this: Eleven 21-or-younger pitchers since 1920 have had more than 10 strikeouts and no walks in a game. Nolan, Blue and Gooden did it twice. But one pitcher did it three times. Can you come up with the name? I never would have guessed it.

Answer: Rick Ankiel. Yes, that’s right, Rick Ankiel.

In other words, this was an amazing performance by Strasburg tonight … every bit as good as the hype leading in. But, yeah, it’s only one game.

kudos to the Nats for having him debut against a team with 3 major league average or better hitters. And none of our guys walk. So he is good, no doubt. But these Pirates are also historically bad.

JD Drew...he didn't hold out per say but he went to the Independent League instead of signing and went back into the draft the following year.

Yeah you could make a list a mile long with draft picks, but once a guy is in the majors you don't see it.

I wish the Brewers would have held out in paying Jeff Suppan

Also, how great is this MLB Network? Only semi-annoying analysts, and I got to see the end of the Halladay perfect game and now the Strasburg debut, whereas before they would've been relegated to regional TV, or to those who ponied up for the Extra Innings package. I love it.

Last night was amazing. I have never, ever been to a game so electric from start to finish. Watching it all unfold in person was amazing. He closed the game with 7 Ks in a row. He reached 14 Ks in fewer pitches than anyone. He set the Nationals (I assume this means the 2005+ team, not Expos or previous Washington teams) record for Ks in a game. He was humble at game's end. The crowd was on its feet for virtually every pitch, and certainly for every pitch with two strikes. The park was still full in the ninth inning (which never happens in Washington). I'm not going to start making room for him in the HOF, but this kid is the real deal. He is the first true ace the Nationals have had since coming to DC.

And have any of the other 57 games had a starting pitcher have this kind of performance?

Hmm ... Strasburg vs Arizona could see a 27 K game

lordscarlet,

By my count 10 pitchers have thrown 7 IP, 4h, 2 ER games against the Pirates this year.

7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K
7 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 14 K

Yes, the 14 K is more impressive, but the line above Strasburg is Carlso Silva from the day before.

I'm the one calling him special, but there is no doubt the Nats picked the perfect team for him to go against.

There was a called third strike early in the game where the umpire almost did a spin demonstratively calling the player out. I swear it reminded me of Naked Gun.

That's because ABC/ESPN have a lot invested in basketball. Plus, the Strasburg thing was the focal point of ESPNews coverage for 4 hours before that game ended.
