Yeah, I'll never understand the wild card game. You could have the 1st place wild card team be twenty games better than the second place wild card and bam, the worse of the two teams wins the one game playoff to host the best team in the league for the first two games of the playoffs. That's some ass backwards shit the MLB cooked up.

Baseball is a game where anybody can win any given night. A bad team can win three in a row and a great team can lose three in a row. Why create a horrible scenario for the 'playoff' game when a far better team may lose the one fucking game..

I dunno, I've already cussed about it enough in the past but this stupid setup for the playoffs where the first two games are hosted by the wild card team. It doesn't make sense at all.

If you asked for a shortlist of players I'd like to control the rights to over the next 5 years, I think McCutchen would be top 5 - premium offense and good defense at a key position - I'm glad the Pirates signed him. My guesstimate, off the cuff list:

- McCutchen
- Tulowitzski(sp?)
- Justin Upton
- Kemp
- Longoria / Weiters

Kerry Wood is set to announce his retirement today. He sure did come blazing on to the scene, but flamed out just as fast.

At least he had a far better run than Mark Prior, and by all accounts, is a class act. Shame he's going out like this, but he's a player I'll always respect.

What he said. Would have liked far better for Wood. Was phenomenal when he came up.

I always like to look up players on bbref to see what kind of money they earned over the course of their career.

$70-million for Wood. Not too shabby for a 35-year old.

Heh...I had a friend who knew him when he was a hotshot kid with a live arm. Said he was a total ass.

But, hey, we are talking a kid in his late teens/early twenties. A lot of us were jerks back then.

Somehow, I seem to remember another friend of a friend who met him once or twice say the same thing. Eh, who knows.

But, regardless...he's acted with class in the public eye, so that counts for me.

I like going back to minor league stats now that we have such things.

The year before Wood came up he was at a 4.57 ERA in the minors with a 1.4 K/BB ratio. Not dominating AA or AAA pitching quite like someone should before coming to the big leagues. Maybe he was rushed way too soon.

Prior's numbers were a lot better and I understand why he came flying through the system. He was dominating like you should before being called up with that type of buzz.

I think I believe Prior got messed up by Dusty. Wood I don't think was ever quite as good as he seemed mostly because of his 20K game.

Kerry threw 200+ IP as a high school player. I think that had more to do with his descent in the majors than anything Dusty may or may not have done.

Probably true; it was an easy cheap shot on my end, and unfair. But man, I would not let Dusty anywhere near a young pitcher.

I can believe that. I remember watching a good bit of that game, presumably on (then)Superstation WGN.

Verlander is pitching a no hitter. And I think the next 4 pirates are under .200 so he will probably get it.

Justin Verlander is just sick. I think its a tossup between him and Felix (and maybe Halladay) for the best pitcher in baseball, but in terms of pure domination...

Verlander's fault, really. He got Harrison to swing at two terrible pitches and then started throwing him strikes. Shoulda stuck with the junk.

The innings thrown early in his career, from high school on up through the majors, certainly was an issue. But at root, the problem was his pitching motion - it put an added amount of stress on his joints beyond the baseline.

Pitching is tough on the arm, but some motions are better than others. Both Prior and Wood featured pitching mechanics that added extra stress to their arms.

Just watched a couple of replays of the hit, and it was an outside curve that McCutchen reached way out at and flailed into center. It was good hitting, but it certainly wasn't a bad pitch at all.

From rotoworld:

Giants signed RHP Brad Penny to a minor league contract.

Penny was recently released from his contract with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks of Japan's Pacific League so that he could return to the United States. He'll report to extended spring training on Monday and could eventually be an option for the Giants' bullpen. The 33-year-old right-hander had an ugly 5.30 ERA and 74/62 K/BB ratio across 181 2/3 innings last year for the Tigers.

One of the other big things about that game is it's not like that was some slouch lineup. You had 2 "should be" (even if only one is "likely") HOFers in Biggio and Bagwell. This was pre-Operation Shutdown Derek Bell who had a .314/.364/.491 with 22 homers and a 125 OPS+ that year and Moises Alou had maybe the best year of his quite good MLB career at .312/.399/.582, 38 homers, and a 157 OPS+. The rest of the lineup was fairly mediocre, I'll grant you. But those 4 comprise a nice middle of the lineup. You saw how Bagwell just looked stupid in a couple of those clips and that's really rare.
