The Forbidden Kingdom - 6.5/10
I think I was expecting too much, and didn't care about the characters at all when the movie ended. The beginning and ending parts were boring too. When I saw that Jackie Chan's character was a drunken fighter, I thought there would be more crazy drunk fighting... or at least more normal Jackie Chan-type fighting, but I didn't see any of that really. Chan's character was pretty funny, Jet Li's character was pretty boring, and I was indifferent to the white kid. The monkey guy (also Jet Li) was funny and cool, but he's not there much. The Asian girl traveling with them was cute though.

Syriana - 7/10
Probably not the type of movie I should be watching, as I was really confused and I don't think I quite caught everything. Read some quick summary after watching that bumped it from a 6.5 to a 7, and confirmed that I didn't catch everything. The DVD cover also says that Clooney won Best Supporting Actor for this role, and I don't see how he was a supporting actor though. If I had to pick one of the actors to be the lead, it would be him. The acting was solid by everyone though.

eXistenZ - 8/10 Wow, hard to believe it has been almost a decade since this one came out. It isn't shown much but is currently on premium cable, where I caught it last night. It is a David Cronenberg film, so 'cult classic' status is almost a given. Weird, twisted (in more than one sense) and very entertaining. It has a great cast (Jennifer Jason Leigh, Iam Holm, Jude Law, Willem DaFoe) and solid production values across the board. One of those movies that virtually demands a second viewing.

Anyone else think this is one of the most underrated sci fi movies in the last ten years?

Yeah, I've only seen this once and it was quite a while ago. I had nfi what was going on for most of it, until the revelation moment. Really good movie, I need to sit down and watch it again.

BTW, if you enjoy this movie you'd probably enjoy Philip K. Dick's book 'The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch'. Very similar ideas done differently.

It's a cute, predictable kid's movie. Our 7 year old loves it and watches it any chance she gets.

Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee - 9/10

On DVD, it is the story of the first Massacre of Wounded Knee in the 1800's, not the one in the 1970's. It starts with Custer losing and leads up to the final screwing of and killing of the Native Americans. Just a great story that was originally written by (and the movie focuses on him) by a "civilized indian."

Well done movie, and a great story IMO. I am biased though with a love of American Indian history.

No Country for Old Men - 6/10

Vastly overrated, and I'm a huge Cohen brothers fan. The only reason I even gave the movie 6 stars was because of the cinematography, acting, and the first 2/3 of the movie. The "ending" was pure pseudo-intellectual crap.

And yes, I "got" the movie. I just didn't enjoy (not that it was really meant to be enjoyable).

So when I went to watch The Forbidden Kingdom, there was there poster up for a movie called Tropic Thunder. If you see the poster, you'll laugh your ass off. I have to see this movie.

I concur. I saw this in the theater back when it came out and loved it. Definitely a great, underrated movie.

Bee Movie - 7.5/10
Barry is a bee that doesn't want to be stuck doing the same job for the rest of his life, so he goes exploring. And this leads to all kinds of shenanigans. There are some pretty funny lines and scenes in the movie, but overall you can tell it's meant to be a kid's movie. Other than the suicide joke, which was kinda weird to hear. Suspend your disbelief that bees can talk and do all the stuff in the movie, and it's quite entertaining. But you'll be straining that suspension on a few occasions.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall - Everything that needs to be said has been said. It was very funny, typical Apatow humor (funny dialogue), it was up there with Knocked Up and Superbad, and I don't even know how to rank them. Anyways, just go see it. It's April, there isn't that many great things to see in the theatre this time of year, go see it, it's worth it. 8.5/10

Previews got me excited with Pineapple Express, and I'm not sure if I am thrilled with how The Incredible Hulk looks.

Interesting story done all in Chinese (subtitles, of course). The story was decent and there is plenty of sex in the UR version - explicit-ouch-doesn't-that-hurt kind of scenes.

Great look at 1940s China/Hong Kong. It was very long and made longer by the stops and starts I needed in order to read all the subtitles and see what was happening in a given scene.

I would never sit through it again, but I'm glad I saw it.

Bee Movie- 7/10 Liked it quite a bit, better than most of the non-pixar animated fare. Dreamworks did a pretty good job with this.

American Gangster 7/10 I dunno what exactly was wrong with this movie, but it should have been better. With the talent involved, it could have been a classic, instead of a bit above average.

the wiki says it is unknown whether the scenese were simulated or not. From my angle, I'm thinking that naughty bits were bumping unless there was some extremely well placed gaffer tape.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998) - I have seen only a bit of it before I watched it start to finish today. I immediately realize that there are 2 groups for this movie - the people that will like it, and the straight & narrow who think it's stupid and one of the worst movies ever. Me, having a multitude of friends that have messed with hallucinogents and knowing the stories behind them, I was dying at some of the scenes with Johnny Depp hallucinating. I thought those were the best parts of the movie, when he was on some hardcore psychadelics. Other than that the story was pretty weak but I got some good laughs. For what it was, 6.5/10.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall - 8/10

Very enjoyable. Liked it better than Knocked Up, which was a bit over-rated IMO, but haven't seen Super Bad. I didn't find FSM a "Laugh out loud all movie" kind of film, but it had the right mix of humour and seriousness - certainly when compared with Knocked Up, anyhow. A very good mix of characters really made this film.

There Will Be Blood - 9.5/10 WOW! Just WOW! I do agree that it was about 10-20 minutes too long, but that's really what prevents it from being a 10/10. I really felt that this movie was brilliant. Daniel Day Lewis was absolutely phenomenal as Plainview, showing how he built his empire and all the while acted ruthlessly in getting it. But the ruthlessness was hiding in the background, growing as time went on.

I thought it was fascinating to see how Plainview evolved and his business became massive. And it was quite a scathing assault on organized religion (and a bit on capitalism, but more on religion). And because of that, I thought the ending was absolutely perfect.

I do think this should have won the Best Picture Academy Award, but I think I gave No Country 9/10, so that's ok.

There Will Be Blood - 8.5/10 - Just saw this tonight, and I thought it was great. It did, as said, go on for 20 minuts too long, and the soundtrack was horrible. In some scenes, the music was so bad it was distracting. I have not seen any of the other movies that were up for Best Actor yet, but it's hard to imagine anyone doing a better job than DDL did in this one. He was outstanding, as was the directing and cinemotography.

Agree with you 100%...trying a little hard to get the audience to say "Oh, you kid!" after every single line Juno said.

Cloverfield-6/10 It was better than I thought it would be. It actually had be suspend disbelief during the beginning the attack. I think the single best scene in the movie was the TV newscast that showed the military getting attacked by the spider-like things.

Before The Devil Knows You're Dead-7.5/10 It had a good plot, and the way the told the story was pretty interesting. I have to confess that I've never seen any of Lumet's other movies (I know, I know), but this seemed pretty solid. If any of you are fans of Marisa Tomei, then tune in for some very quality nude scenes. My main problem with the movie was that the disconnect between Hoffman's character and his family didn't have enough substance to it. It was just kind of like he was a spoiled brat that didn't get everything he wanted from his folks.

It was what I thought it would be (crown its ass?) -- touching, warm, funny in a by-the-way kind of way. Didn't love it, but didn't feel like I'd wasted 2 hours, either.

Professional ping pong player Daytona gets a visit from the FBI and is brought out of retirement to look for his father's killer.

Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay - 6/10: It was amusing and had some funny bits, but wasn't anywhere as good as the first one. Some great, pointed jokes about racism in the US (towards Harold and Kumar and from them), which was far more the focus of this movie than the first one. However, it really didn't flow that well, seemed a bit all over the place and no real falling out of the chair rolling on the floor moments which were all over the place in H&K go to White Castle.
