dishwasher/clothes washing machine, both use inductive motors. Same characteristics.
The dryer thing changes things a bit. Typically your dryer chasis is grounded by connection to the groundED conductor (not the groundING conductor) if you have a chasis connection to groundED conductor a GFI breaker (AFCI) will trip every time. The wiring creates a theoretical short between ground and neutral. Now there are some nuance differences between Arc Fault and Ground fault. I dont want to be throwing those around interchangeably. Bottom line, if its a new home - it has a warranty - they need to get out there and fix it. |

Oh, I've already pinged them to come out and take a look.
And thus far, both machines plugged into the other outlet in the laundry room has not tripped the breaker. |

The saga continues. Guy came over, tested the outlets, and basically told me "thanks to the new code, that's just gonna happen". I told him in no uncertain terms that was not acceptable. Being unable to operate a washer and dryer is Not Okay.
"Well, about the only thing you can do is replace the breaker with one that's not up to code". "Okay, so who do I talk to to do that?" "...let me chat with my boss." We'll see. Fucking annoying. Last edited by Coffee Warlord : 05-17-2018 at 03:24 PM. |

Have you engaged the builder/GC?
If they are no help, call the electrical inspector himself. They love to hammer contractors who blame "the code" for their incompetence... Last edited by CU Tiger : 05-17-2018 at 03:34 PM. |

My son's field day at school today. The Thunderbirds were out practicing for the Air Force Academy graduation tomorrow, they buzzed the playground a couple times. Didn't get any good pictures, but was still cool.

I need to talk to more Indian(the non native American kind) people or something. I feel like I bombed a job interview because I couldn't get around one of the interviewers thick Indian accent.

I sympathize. I am hard of hearing anyway (legally deaf in 1 ear and only 70% function in my good ear) but I can typically function great with a combination of attention and a little lip reading. I've got one client however who is Indian, and he's a super good guy and super smart. But all of our interactions are painful because I cant understand him. I end up asking him to repeat himself 10x each. |

I sympathize too. I have 100% loss in one ear and 40-60% loss in the other. I work in IT and have the most problem with Asian Indian accents to the point I tend not to communicate with them (I don't have to much anyway). Other Asians and Europeans not much of a problem if I listen carefully, though I would have to add American Southerners to the problem list as well.

I pick up a lot of foreign students. It's kind of weird when they'll be conversing in their native tongue but then Express something in English and then go right back to their native tongue. I assume some expressions/ideas in English just don't Translate well to other foreign languages?

I noticed this when I was living in Italy. Some English phrases just get used. One example is 'weekend'. That was used quite a bit, when there 'fine settimana' is the proper Italian to use. A lot of computer terms used are English as well.

Heh. Electrical fun update.
In a move that surprises no one, they tried a few things, then replaced the breaker with an older, non arc fault breaker. And gasp, it's not tripping anything. They didn't have a tester with them for the units themselves, so they're gonna come back at some point to test the washer/dryer. |

In a bar watching First Take with the sound off.
Max Kellerman’s job is literally to sit there and pretend to look interested while SAS rants. And you know what? He’s really good at it. Staring into a camera for minutes on end, not talking and not looking like a goober isn’t as easy as it looks. |

Just from watching cable news coverage of Roseanne's tweet, I can only conclude that no one has ever insulted anyone before. The way they talk about it you'd think she had participated in the Holocaust or something.
I'm not a fan of the tweet myself but some people need to get off their pedestals.

I'd have to consciously rediscover what the p.o.s. in question looks like to pass judgement on the tweet.
And I can't remotely find myself caring enough one way or the other to do that.

How so? Either you don't know that the tweet is racist or you're saying people are overreacting to a racist tweet.

Can you please clarify then? I have not seen any of the cable news coverage so maybe they are people on there suggesting she receive the death penalty. If that is the case, then yes I agree, those people need to get off their pedestal. If the cable pundits are comparing it to yo momma jokes however...

I think he said
1) Insults are okay 2) He is not okay with racism I infer that he doesn't think this specific "insult" was that bad Therefore 1) He doesn't think the insult rises to the level of racism? |

A weird take when someone makes a joke than an African-American woman descends (partially) from apes.

It is kind of strange that this is front page national news, maybe that's what he's getting at. I mean, even here, it's not worthy of its own thread. Does that mean we don't think this was a big deal? Or was this so great a tragedy as to appropriately dominate the news outlets? Yes, there's a lot going on but damn it, that mentally ill racist sitcom star said something else terrible, stop the presses!
I wonder if this was the most expensive tweet in the history of twitter. This was a big show (which I had no idea of until today, so, thanks news outlets, I guess.) Last edited by molson : 05-29-2018 at 04:35 PM. |

While the exact impact is hard to read, I think it's probably fair to say that her tweet was among the most negative financial impact from one we've seen. Trump's Lockheed Martin tweet probably exceeded it in raw dollars, that was the start of a $3.5b tumble, though there was partial recovery afterwards. (I don't own any of it so I haven't looked to see how complete the recovery has been)

I can only speak for myself and with the caveat that I have read very little of the coverage of the scandal other than the comments here. I will never be able to ignore the historical context of associating a black person with apes. In the same way, I will never ignore the historical context of a Jewish person with rats for example. So for me, when I hear either of those associations being made, I do ask why because my initial thought is one informed by that historical context. That doesn't mean that when it happens that I go into a depression or it automatically forces me to judge the person that says it into a "mentally ill racist". It does become a piece of the puzzle that is my impression of said person. I also have a history with being called a gorilla on more than a few occasions to include one time in a Dothan, Alabama bar that did not end especially well so there is that. To answer your questions, do I think it is a big deal? Yes, because of what I wrote above and I thought the collective "We" thought that this was not cool 40 years. That does not mean it should be a big deal to you but also does not invalidate its importance to me. Was this so great a tragedy as to appropriately dominate the news outlets? No, because I would not have expected anything else from Roseanne. For more context, I also did not think it was a big deal when she sang the National Anthem. Humor strikes everyone differently and does the backlash to humor YMMV
