Wonder if any team has ever made the BCS, Men's Final Four and Women's Final Four in the same year.. before today that is.

Yeah, it appears to be awfully good at this point for Mizzou. Mizzou staff stayed extra down in Florida to clear any details. Painter went back to West Lafayette tonight without his family. He's going to meet with a Purdue official, but is refusing to meet with the AD. It sounds like Painter is going to make a 'him or me' ultimatum to Purdue. If the AD isn't gone, he's leaving. Really doubt they would fire an AD to retain a coach, but we'll see.

In addition, students at Purdue organized a rally of support for Painter. 11 people ended up attending it.

Wow, this is going to be really awkward when Missouri accepts its Big Ten conference invite in 201.....

Oh, wait. Nevermind.

I guess I am just viewing this different. I don't see this as a good sign for Mizzou. If he is going back to make any kind of offer to Purdue that screams to me that he wants to stay and is willing to make another program (that really wants him) wait to see if the job he really wants is willing to pony up.

+1

Seems obvious Painter wants things to work out at Purdue, but feels like he has to do the song and dance with Mizzou in order to get Purdue to address his concerns. Ball is obviously in the court of Purdue - Painter is giving them the opportunity to keep him, but he's holding their feet to the fire.

I would imagine in any of Jim Calhoun's visits to the Final Four.

Oklahoma - 2002
Duke - 1999
Georgia - 1983
LSU - 2006

For non-Mizzou rumors, yesterday the sports radio airwaves around here were having fun with the fact that some ESPN Radio station down in Tallahassee was reporting that Billy Donovan from Florida was in Raleigh interviewing for the NC State position. Mind you, he comes up here for recruiting trips regularly, and no one knows why some FSU station would be the one to get the leak, but the hosts were having fun with it. The only sliver of hope anyone actually holds out is that maybe the UF alums got spoiled early, and the fact that he hasn't delivered a recent national championship may mean he's on the hot seat there, but I don't think anyone is taking it seriously. Of course, I don't follow the NC State boards, so I have no clue if there is more of a ruckus than normal flowing around.

Updates on Matt Painter say that he did not go back to West Lafayette as previously reported. He took the night in Florida to think it over. MU has requested to hear something by noon today if possible. If we hear something right away, good for Purdue. If we don't hear something, likely good for Mizzou as he has said he will inform staff/players before he makes formal announcement.

The Purdue Asst. AD who send out that half-cocked e-mail yesterday is now sending out mass apology e-mails this morning to try to put out the fires.

Quote:
Dear John Purdue Club Members:

As a follow-up to my email of Tuesday morning, I want to offer a heartfelt apology if I offended you.

As a member of the John Purdue Club, you are part of our greatest affinity group whose generosity has been integral to the accomplishments of our Boilermaker student-athletes.

Be assured that we are doing everything we can to make sure Matt Painter remains a Boilermaker.

Sincerely,

Nancy L. Cross

I don't know how to feel about Donovan. He's a quality coach and does have two rings, but I remember there was growing skepticism about him prior to those two championships. He also (to his credit, I should add) had strong upper-class-laden teams get him those titles and also benefited from being in the SEC where the only routine competitor is UK (with occasional threats mounted by UT, Vandy, and LSU). His problem has been that he hasn't replicated that success since then even as the SEC as a whole has declined, pretty much leaving the field to Kentucky and themselves.

I'm also still resentful over that 70-foot-heave that Florida beat us with last year. Not sure I'm ready to forgive him for that.

So, there is a feeling that Donovan to NC State is an actual thing that could happen, and not just some overly excitable guys on Tallahassee talk radio being ridiculous?

I thought this was a very, very firm NO, not an actual thing that could happen. Wolfpack not immediately laughing away these rumors has me debating whether to wonder if something crazy could happen or if I should be worrying about his sanity.

Even Kentucky wasn't really competitive during the years Florida won their titles (Tubby's last two seasons). It just struck me as a lightning-in-a-bottle sort of thing for Florida: a group of players that meshed incredibly well as a team that decided as a group to return college after the first title. It's going to be difficult for Donovan to replicate that.

That said, it would amaze me if he jumped for NC State after bailing on the Magic and turning down the Kentucky gig twice.

Oh, sorry for confusion. IMO, it's a wishful-thinking thing. I really don't think Donovan is coming to Raleigh. Some fans remember his bailing on Orlando like he did and count that as a negative on him.

I think the Wolfpack might be some of the most delusional fans out there. I saw them talking about Pitino, Williams, and Coach K and saying that there was no use going after them because they were older than what they wanted in a coach. Maybe I shouldnt have read the message board and based my opinion on that

Not more vocal, I would say, just have a poorer reputation thanks to the various national talking heads who have spent years running down the fans who apparently had so much power to get Sendek "fired". It was more prevalent this year as it became obvious that Lowe wasn't going to survive, so just about any time an ACC game was on air, it would be discussed at least once about the tragedy that befell Sendek and that Lowe was now in similar trouble, all because the fans couldn't accept their place in their defined pecking order of the ACC (Duke/UNC/everyone else can go to hell).

I've poked around a bit and I think the Donovan thing was entirely a bad rumor tossed on to one of the premium State boards that wormed it's way public and then took off from there. The bloated ego that is David Glenn (if you aren't living in the Raleigh area and tuned to sports radio during the lunch hour, count yourself lucky) apparently got his hackles up because he had to waste time tracking down the rumor and has been teeing off on State fans a bit at a result, to which I say, "Would you like something to go with your whine?"

dola...

For what it's worth, the general consensus lately has been either Gregg Marshall from Wichita State or Shaka Smart from VCU, neither of whom would be called the "home run hire" that we've been after, but I think the herd of big names coaches seems to be very small on a year-to-year basis and if you don't catch one in the right circumstance (like what may be happening with Painter and Mizzou) it's very difficult to lure one away. I'll admit to hoping for a big-name coach of some kind, but I also knew that more than likely we were going to plan B and hoping it worked out.

I don't remember any Mizzou fans saying that on here. Will only cover myself with this post but seem to remember Mizzourah and MBBF saying basically the same things...

(I saw how ridiculous this was a few years back when some of my KU coworkers wanted to string up Roy Williams but didn't think Bill Self was doing the same thing to his Iliini players) I do think it is pretty low what he did to his best friends kids but maybe they will transfer with him and if not he might have one less friend.

There seems to be some talk (maybe wishful thinking??? ) that Hummel will come as a package since graduate students don't have to sit out a year. I will wait for Painter to accept the job though before pondering that.

Huh? I just read he turned it down, which is hardly surprising. This was all about getting a pay bump from the get-go, as far as I can see. Seemed pretty obvious.

Wyoming is about to hire Larry Shyatt. He coached at UW for one season in 97-98 before leaving for Clemson and is now Billy Donovan's assistant.

Sources: Shyatt likely to land UW job

Went 70-84 at Clemson and then went to sit on the bench with Billy Donovan after that. He also sued the university back in the 90s for breach of contract and eventually settled with the school.

Yeah, a real home run hire.

Crap. I read that Missouri might have Randy Bennett of St. Mary's on their short list, and I was kind of hoping that Dayton might have a shot at him seeing as he was apparently our first interview, but we won't have a chance if Missouri wants him.

I'll give you credit - at least you're not making declarative statements yourself this time and instead simply passing along rumors and other print reports.

Yes, he will, but instead of throwing out the first pitch, he's going to be dodging 50,000 souvenir replica baseballs.

Don't worry about Mizzou. Whoever they end up with will be the best choice available and the obvious first choice candidate from the beginning.

It will be fun to watch the backstepping, since it seems pretty well documented that the Missouri AD was out front on this one (rather than the intermediaries that usually do the behind the scenes work so that no one ends up with egg on their face) and the financial terms seem to have been published.

I will admit I got caught up in the hype the last day or two but hindsight on this one is pretty clear. Why would the guy leave his alma mater for a job that at best is the equivalent of what he has now? People were saying facilities but that is always fanspeak for I have no other explanation. A lot of Mizzou fans are pissed at our AD but I am happy that he wants to try to land a big name coach. We will ultimately end up with a mid-major or retread but at least we are playing the game.
