When I played as a kid, we didn't call the Jokers Bowers. But according to wikipedia, some people do call it the best bower. So wouldn't that make the three highest cards bowers? And, if so, wouldn't (to be semantic about it) the two highest cards be bowers? |

Yes, I suppose the two (but not exactly two) would still be. The level of parsing/nitpicking on the part of some llamas is...well, I guess it's to be expected, but still head-shaking at times. Like the one who argued that basically, there are an infinite number of answers besides "Mason-Dixon" because all sorts of things cross/run along the same parallel. Which...yeah.

albion: if you're not too attached to your branch, YD has looked into it and apparently you can be grafted onto another one (he somehow got separated from us, then we moved into Hinterland leaving him behind in Delta but he's petitioned to switch).
(I'm sure Ravenna is nice though. )

15th in C, my defense sucked this year and had a negative point differential. But not a bad season overall

I got 6th in B.
According to the luck post in LL I was very unlucky this season. maybe some folks in A will decide not to come back. But it looks like another season in B for me.

Got my second 9(6) in School of Rock mini-league in 4 days. If I don't win the group, something's wrong.
Who knew knowing the lyrics to "She Bop" would ever come in handy?

Yeah, it would be nice to keep this up in the regular league, but my knowledge skews heavily towards sports and popular culture and not so much things like Art and Classical Music or history.

Good luck to everyone for the new league that starts tomorrow!
I just missed being in A. I was 6th and the 5th place guy went up.

Does anyone have any suggestions for defense in a rookie rundle? I couldn't think of anything better than by assigning points roughly in line with the difficulty I had with each question.

That's pretty much it. You can't really defend your opponents in R (maybe by the end of the season) so you just have to defend the questions.

What I always tell people is don't play defense based on what you would get wrong, score based on someone relatively well-informed but not too much. It's a crapshoot in rookie rundle, but...I figured it out about halfway through my rookie season, you just have to defend against layups and ensure that whenever they get a 3 pointer, it's well earned. After a few rounds, you'll get a feel for it based on the types of questions and can adapt your strategy based on how you defend early. I've coached a few people to solid rookie defense seasons with those tenets, so...it's not all made up. if you're bad at math, don't assume everyone is. If you're not a history buff, doesn't mean someone else isn't. Try to measure the degree of difficulty of the question for anyone -- like is it a Jeopardy question? Or a bar trivia stumper? Somewhere in-between? That's how I score questions, even in A rundle, not totally based on stats because people will surprise you sometimes. Last edited by Young Drachma : 08-19-2020 at 08:43 PM. |

Definitely agree with this, speaking for myself as someone who has too many categories where I am just completely clueless, my biggest failing in defense is when I am unable to recognize that a question is decently well known by folks at a general level - maybe not a layup (but sometimes, yes), but you know an 8 foot jumper in a category where I can't even make the layups. If I ever take this serious enough to start studying, that's the thing that would immediately let me promote from D to C, is bumping up my minimal level of knowledge in art, food/drink, opera, theater and the like to recognize when something might be more common knowledge, even if I can't pull the answer myself, to defend it better. |

One thing I love/hate about LL is the frequency with which an answer does not come to me right away, but there's at least some shot of "noodling" it, or just sitting back in hopes of the answer coming to me. I'm fairly knowledgeable with the sort of things trivia contests are built around, so I have a solid base... this sort of thing is basically my strongest suit.
For me, the toughest is the time I spend on a question where I have some tiny inkling that it might come to me, but it doesn't. Today, I gave up in agony on one specific question, only to see the correct answer upon submission and growl out a "oh hell I totally knew that." Happens fairly often. But the, maybe, two minutes of time spent putting down my phone, closing my eyes, and trying to summon that answer... it felt like an eternity. |

That's my struggle - being patient enough to sit on a question. I am not good at it (I GOTTA KNOW THE ANSWER NAO!!), but I am getting somewhat better.

Yup. Yesterday it was "pipette" a term I 100% know, but since it didn't come to me in 90 seconds of agony, I just clicked and then smacked myself. Still beat tho. |

...and today I got my other major personal LL weakness exposed... I entered in what I thought was a correct answer, then when I saw it was incorrect I went back and actually read the question in detail enough to see that my submission could not have been correct (and had I done so initially, i likely would have gotten the right answer)... so, 4/6 today should have been a 5.

I have been better with RTFQ errors. Still by no means perfect, but I think improving. Reading a couple thousand back questions may be helping with parsing the writing style, but also just going nice and slow.

Ah - I've found you and added you to my tracker. Strong rookie season! Took me ages just to get above .600 QPct.
(I was 8/12 on the Classic and went out on a limb on two wrong money answers, so didn't place too well. YD OTOH...)

If I hadn't taken two forfeits, I'd be in contention for promotion. Alas

Would've gotten promoted without the 2 forfeits. Had an extremely favorable schedule that probably won't be replicated again

And my happy ending is that I avoided relegation from B, after a mediocre effort this season with my own two Fs. Meh.
I don't have the backbone to really put some shoulder into this, like my friend just west of here, but... well, it would arguably be a better use of the channel of time I am spending on my fifth FOF team, or my current Madden-trading efforts, or whatnot. |

I had 2nd in the R rundle clinched over the weekend, so coasted this week. The B rundle may be a wake-up call.
